Book giveaway: P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han

We’re back with another book giveaway!

Perhaps you’ll recall that we did a giveaway last year for the young adult novel To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han, which we were happy to do because the book was sweet, funny, and thoughtfully written, from the perspective of a Korean-American teenager falling in love and navigating her first romance. Jenny is herself quite the drama fan, and I thought To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before even read like a drama plot transferred to novel form (I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t picturing certain K-drama actors in the roles).

The fabulous Ms. Han has written the sequel to To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, P.S. I Still Love You, which released just today — and since the last giveaway went so well, she’s giving us 5 copies to give away to Dramabeans readers.

Girlfriday and I have read the book, and it’s difficult to talk about the plot without giving away spoilers for the first one (which we don’t want to spoil since you should really just go read it!) — but suffice to say that heroine and middle sister Lara Jean still has her sisterly bonding moments, her fair share of embarrassing teenage-girl foibles, and a love triangle to twist you up, but in a good way (since both boys are such great characters).

TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY:

Leave a comment below, sharing your favorite K-drama set in high school. (Jenny names Answer Me 1997 as hers. I did love that one, but if I had to pick something else as my most addictive, I might have to go with Boys Before Flowers. I know! But it was cracktastic evil magic, okay? Girlfriday says both recent seasons of School, though she reserves the right to rescind School 2015 if Eun-bi picks the wrong boy. You know which one we mean!)

Be sure to leave a valid email address, since that’s how we’ll get in touch with winners.

This giveaway is unfortunately limited to U.S. entrants; apologies to all of you outside of the States.

Deadline: Thursday, May 28, at midnight PST. We’ll announce winners shortly thereafter.

If you’d like to buy the book instead, it’s now available from Simon and Schuster, Amazon, and other retailers.

For me, a few dramas kind to mind.
During my sophomore year, I had to undergo treatment and was in the hospital for about three months. During that time, my friend introduced me to "Prosecutor Princess". The drama is close to my heart because it served as a great distraction from the painful medical treatments. I didn't have to think about needles and white blood cell counts. All that mattered was when Hyeri and Inwoo would get together or how cute Inwoo was despite his ridiculous outfits. "Prosecutor Princess" is one of my favorite dramas not only because its witty writing, amazing actors, and remarkable chemistry. It's special because it got me through a hard time in my life and helped me bond with that friend.
I have to do a special shoutout to "Dae Mul" at this point. This same friend and I decided to embark on this drama when I went into physical rehabilitation. Go Hyunjung was ridiculously charismatic and commanded all of my attention. This drama was refreshing because the protagonist didn't need a man to succeed. She managed to become president on her own will, passion, and hard work. That's something you don't often see in K-Drama land.
"Reply 1997" aired during my senior year, and boy did the feelings resonate. The drama managed to make me laugh, cry, and ponder. Shiwon was so lovable, and I felt that I could connect with every character in one way or another. Whether it touched upon fangirl moments, matters of family, and leaving home for college, "Reply 1997" did such a wonderful job of almost summarizing life that I had lived for the past 18 years. I am now in college, and I don't really have times for Korean dramas. "Reply 1997" is technically the last drama I have religiously committed to, and in some odd way, it's fitting.

My favorite is probably Dream High, although School 2013 is a close runner up. It hade its flaws, but Dream High had such wonderfully golden moments that I still love to dig up an rewatch every now and then.

Hmmm...I think my most favorite recent high school set drama has to be Angry Mom (bok dongieeee for lyfe!), but I think my all-time favorite high school set drama is probably Shut Up Flower Boy Band and Flower Boy Ramyun Shop (does that count as high school set? I think it does..).

Thank you for the giveaway!

I'd have to say mine is between Dream High and Answer Me 1997. I'd say Answer Me 1997 has an edge though because of the pop culture references that I love (HOT! Eun Ji Won!) but also I loved all the main cast members. The parents were also absolutely adorable one moment and making me cry the next. It's one of those few dramas I rewatched that still got to me the second time around. Right in the gut. And tear ducts.

To be honest, my favorite kdrama set in high school would have to be Angry Mom, although High School King of Savvy is a close second (but most of it is outside school xD).

Angry Mom was really funny and sweet, and although completely unbelievable, I still loved the main cast (but mainly just the idea of a kickass mom who would have the nerve to go to school with you and beat up all your classmates). Also, it made for some interesting situations trying to explain to my classmates my new favorite kdramas when they mostly watch melo, variety, and rom-com. But hey, Bok-Dong/Bang-Wool ship for life, amirite?

For full disclosure, I haven't seen that many high school dramas (other than the two I mentioned, I've seen Heirs and Goong and just started Orange Marmalade). Heirs was like an extremely cliché high school sitcom posing as a rom-com (?) drama, and Goong was okay but frustratingly slow at parts. Also I can't really deal with 2000s fashion (or Kim Tan fashion for that matter).

And since I forgot to include it above, my email is rainshadow97@gmail.com

has to be either biscuit teacher or Delightful girl choon hyang.
I have yet to watch any drama with Gong Hyo Jin that disappoints. Perhaps she should reteam with Gong yoo and maybe some of her luck can trickle down.

Fav high school drama has to be Answer Me 1997. It was the first drama I ever watched where I was waiting on pins and needles each week to see what was going to happen next. And it is still one of the only ones I'll go back and re watch.

Glancing through my drama list, I realize that I haven't seen many high school dramas! But I HAVE seen Answer Me 1997 and loved it SO much, so I'm definitely going with that one! It seems like a drama everyone can relate to--definitely me. I watched it at the beginning of college and when she was making that transition from high school to college it hit me so hard that I cried.

*sigh*
Can we not have a reunion drama for these two? :)

Dream High taught us to dream big, work hard, and in a course of a great montage, you too can become a wonderful dancer, singer, and lose weight and look hot. lol. So, it was exaggerated, it definitely had that addicting appeal that excited me to look forward to the next episode. And while I definitely was not happy with Song Sam Dong winning Hyemi's heart the first time I watched the show, it was the show itself that persuaded me to watch it again and again till I fell for Sam Dong and Kim Soo Hyun. In fact, it is with Sam Dong's persistence in mind that I watch School 2015. Because in the end, the persistent underdog did win. And, I am so with you GF still aboard the Tae Kwang - Eun Bi ship, because if this ship sinks, I don't even know what I will do. Seriously, any cure for the second lead syndrome? SHHH... WHAT Second lead. GAHHHHH.... GIRLFRIDAY HALLPPPPPP

I loved the To All the Boys I've Loved Before!

I have only watched five dramas set in high school. I don't really watch them, and I never get past halfway, even if I do, I probably didn't understand any of it. So I'm going to choose the one I could get through without getting a headache; ANGRY MOM!

I liked School 2013, but unfortunately, I forgot about it, so I never finished it. I will never forget Angry Mom though. It was the first drama to make me cry. The characters were lovable. I feel like only the first four-ish episodes were very school centered while the rest went all the way to politics. So based on those four episodes and maybe some other scenes in other episodes, it definitely highlighted quite a few problems in schools. Words that were spoken really resonated with me like when Jo Kang-ja (Kim Hee-sun), "A joke?! The stone you throw as a joke could kill a frog!”

I may be overthinking this, but by bringing it to a political level and not centering it just on school, it represented how little school really matters in the real world but at the same time, how issues in school can affect and happen in the real world. Negligence and abuse can echo through future generations (-cough-Do Jung-woo-cough-), but we can stand up and choose to escape it (-cough-Hong Sang-tae-cough-).

My favorite drama set in high school is Sang Doo Let’s Go To School. It's an oldie, but a goodie. Nothing makes me think of high school in Korea more than this drama. This is the first drama i came to know the power of Gong Hyo jin (Bi was there too, and okay he was cute---really cutesy--okay he was wonderful in this too, but for me Gong hyojin just warmed my heart so much.) It's not a perfect drama and watching it now might make me cringe a bit, but it was just good dramatic fun. And back then, it was more than I could have asked for. Something about father and daughter scenes....they're too powerful.

My favorite kdrama that set in high school will be School 2015, because it about teens depicts the struggles and dilemmas that modern-day Korean youth face, such as bullying, student suicides, school violence, deteriorating teacher-student relations, private tutoring and other real-life high school issues. And also Lee Jong Suk, Kim Woo Bin, Jang Nara, and Daniel Choi is in this amazzing drama. Ohhh and the ost is awesome, specially Kim Bo Kyung song get me eveytimes.

A lot of dramas with high school setting, but if I have to choose one I'll go with School 2013.
I can't stand bullying so even though I had the files, it took me two years to finally watched it (thanks to Pinocchio).
And I'm not disappointed: good chemistry between the actors, nice and understanding teachers (finally!!), and solid story that is memorable (without makjang or chaebol).

My favourite high school drama is of course SCHOOL 2013. The drama reflects the reality of school life with joy, anger, sadness, etc. It teaches me a lot about friendship, what is the real friend, how should we act as a friend.

I love jang na ra in that show, how she can potray the character of a really good teacher. Lee jong suk and kim woo bin also share me their acting capability that make them shine now.

SCHOOL 2013

I would definitely say the insanely addictive Boys over flowers as I marathoned it in 2 days and it's one of the very first dramas that got me hooked to K-dramas and DB!! So much that it's a routine now for me to visit dramabeans once a day:))) besides that I would say Reply 1997 as the second best.

Hmm. I'm torn between Dream High and School 2013. I'm loving School 2015, but it still has 6 episodes in which to make me shriek with rage. Or despair. I suspect it will fail on both those counts, and continue to make me giddy at the prospect of watching it right until the end. I may have actually squealed with joy today when I realized it was Tuesday and I would have 2 new episodes to watch.

Also, I think School 2013 edges out Dream High a bit. By the way, I loved the first book. Anyone who hasn't read it yet should definitely check it out!

The high school setting is my all time favorite for dramas--the emotional turmoil of self-discovery/establishing your identity while trying to fit in with friends at school. Makes it difficult to select a favorite! The ones that stand out for me in recent years are Dream High, Shut Up Flower Boy Band and Reply 1997, but I will have to go with Boys Over Flowers for its crazy addictiveness and because it brought me to kdramaland.

Fun to read other peoples' favorites.
