News bites: July 23, 2016

Ryu Joon-yeol

  • Ryu Joon-yeol did a Facebook Live broadcast on July 21 during which he talked about the conclusion of Lucky Romance. He adorably said goodbye to his Su-ho character, stating that while the interviews after Answer Me 1988 went on for quite some time and he had a lot of time to say bye to Jung-hwan, he only had a single interview to say farewell to Su-ho. He thanked his fans for supporting the show and plugged his upcoming films, The King and Taxi Driver. [Sports Chosun]
  • A director’s cut of Oh Hae-young Again has been commissioned for DVD and Blu-ray, to “return some of the love shown by fans.” (Hehe, sounds a little bit like tvN is after fans’ wallets, too.) The cable network and the producers are currently in discussions regarding the direction of the special release, and if all goes as planned, the director’s cut should be available before the end of the year. [DongA]

  • Park Hae-jin, Hong Seol

  • Park Hae-jin has been set to reprise his role as Yoo Jung for a couple of months now, and producers are turning to open auditions in China and Korea to cast the role of Seol in the Cheese in the Trap film. The first round will consist of online and video submissions to the Chinese and Korean production companies between August 1 and 15. From those applications, roughly 30 actresses will be chosen to continue to the second round. After auditions, the list of hopefuls will be whittled down to ten, and in the third round, they’ll pick their Hong Seol and cast the runner-up as Nam Joo-yeon (the classmate who terrorizes Seol early on in the show). Cameras for the movie adaptation of the hit webtoon will begin rolling early next year. [DongA]
  • Joining the cast of Jealousy Incarnate is Park Jin-joo (Girl Who Sees Smells, Sunny). She’ll play a nurse and a character that sticks out — maybe because the show is set at a broadcast station and everyone else is a weathercaster or news anchor? The show starring Gong Hyo-jin and Jo Jung-seok will air on SBS on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in August. [DongA]

  • Kim Ok-bin, Kim Sang-kyung

  • The taekwondo and hapkido skills possessed by Kim Ok-bin (The Unfair, Yoo-na’s Street) will come in handy if she takes Evil Woman on as her next project. She’s in final negotiations to play the lead in the rare female-starring action film, which Jung Byung-gil (Confession of Murder) will direct. On the heels of Kim Hye-soo’s Goodbye Single, Sohn Ye-jin’s The Truth Beneath, and news of Temporary Secret Agent, I’m thrilled by the changing Chungmuro tide. [DongA]
  • On top of Evil Woman, reports have surfaced confirming Kim Ok-bin as the lead for Seven Secrets, although her rep countered that she’s in the “positively considering” stage. In the film about a military secret, she’s up for the role of a broadcast reporter hellbent on exposing corruption, while Kim Sang-kyung (What’s With This Family) is in talks to play a man at the center of controversy. Seven Secrets will be directed by Hong Ki-sun (Where the Truth Lies) and will begin filming in September. [Osen, TV Report]

  • Whirlwind Girl 2

  • While he hasn’t confirmed K2 yet, Ji Chang-wook’s Whirlwind Girl 2 is on fire in China, and has already garnered over a billion clicks on Weibo. In the second season, a romance blossoms between Ji, an Olympics-level martial artist, and An Yue Xi, whom he coaches. The lead producer heaped praise on Ji, calling him a role model, and his co-star An also had nothing but accolades: “Ji Chang-wook Oppa is so respectful and well-mannered and careful. When we first started practicing and Oppa would speak in Korean, I felt as though I was filming a Korean drama. He treated everyone warmly. Plus, isn’t he the Korean drama lead we all love?” The youth romance in a martial arts setting premiered on Hunan TV on July 20. [Sports Chosun 1, 2, TV Report]

I checked it out for JCW. I couldn't last 15 mins. The show looks cheaply produced, compared to KDs which I'm used to. The makeup is so poorly done that everyone looks like they are wearing a mask, 1 shade darker than a geisha's face.
During those 10+ mins., I didn't see any actress who could act. Pls don't say I'm a hater of those actresses cos I've never seen them b4. Anyway, I hope JCW has been paid enough to make it worth his while to forego K dramas for a year and a half to make 2 Chinese dramas. As much as I love and miss JCW, this one is not for me.

Same. The quality isn't there, and what is up with dubbing over people with voice actors?! I do get that this is an established practice and that it's got lots to do with regional accents, and sure, American news channels sometimes subtitle over Yorkshire-area English people (which is always hilarious), but it's too much of a break with reality for me to enjoy the show when it's obvious the actress isn't the voice I'm hearing.

Ji Chang Wook has a great voice. A huge part of acting is delivery and pitch and all the emotion you pack into a voice. I'm sure a lot of this is cultural conditioning on both sides, but I can't suspend disbelief enough to enjoy a dubbed show, especially when I already know the voice of one of the actors. It feels like they've motion-captured Ji Chang Wook and stuck him in a Chinese drama, where he moves and looks the way Real Ji Chang Wook does, but... isn't.

I think he is cashing in too early on his fame. I know China is where the money is at but he needs to establish himself a little more in Korea if he wants to be as famous as a Lee Min Ho or a Kim Soo Hyun.

Your comment about him cashing in early is not entirely fair. Healer's ratings in Korea wasn't great so after that he was not that sort after in Korea. Seeing his army enlistment looming, he had to do some work before going to the army. And China came warmly with many offers. In fact this was not the first drama he did after Healer. The other chaebol like drama, didn't get an airdate. He comes from a single parent family, he needs to work to support himself and his mum.

I don't think it'll be a problem for him though since this show is garnering a lot clicks anyway. Chinese viewers must be used to the poorer quality of dramas so that they don't find the quality of their dramas lacking.

Totally agree about the non-appeal of subbed voices! Our favorite k-drama stars have wonderful voices - it's part of who they are and part of their acting ability. I was horrified when I tried to Watch Rain's Chinese drama and heard a high-pitched, nasal male voice speaking Chinese instead of Rain's sexy, whispery deep voice. Nuts to that!!! The photos of Ji Change Wook are pretty but I grew a little weary of how over-exposed he was after Healer and then disappointed in him for not filming at least one more Korean drama before he disappeared.

I watched the 1st 4 episodes and enjoyed it. It's geared towards the young uns in China. The 1st season was even worse. Everyone was so pale and whited out, you didn't know where the face ended and lips started. In the 1st season, the acting was mediocre.

Is it really necessary though to held an open audition in china adm korea. I understand it it was only in Korea but with what happened to my sassy girl 2 I cannot help but think the worst. Stop messing around wit citt. If they truly want to do it better this time then do it properly. But already the start of it smell fishy. This smells like money all the way. But they dont have to be that greedy for chinese money since a lot of people already hyped up for this movie. I sincerely hpe that park hae jin and soonki wont be burned twice but what i am afraid of the most is US the fans. The fiasco and piano phobia is still fresh in my mind. I refuse to watch it they ended up casting a chinese actress. The core material of the webtoon was a college life of a korean college student. They should not mess this up. PLEASE.

I'm guessing Director Park Chan Wook has an impact on this change in Chungmuro.

"The director explains, “Maybe it’s because I’m raising a daughter, or because I personally believe that my wife is stronger than I, but I have a lot of interest in female characters. Worldwide, there is a significant lack of strong female characters. I want to see women who have their own goals and desires, and strong wills, not just polite and “angelic” characters. However, I’ve realized there just isn’t much representation of these kinds of women in this industry.”

I watched Whirlwind Girl 1 cuz I really liked the main cast of Yang Yang, Hu Bing Qing, and Sean Chen. So, I was excited there would be Season 2. But then, it seems that Yang Yang and Hu Bing Qing couldn't reprise their roles. So, I'm disappointed in that. At least Sean Chen is still in this season and there's JCW this time. I haven't seen this new female lead before and will probably catch this later since I want to see how the story develops.

I have never watched a cdrama before but I couldn't pass up a chance to see JCW again, so I started Whirlwind 2 the other day. However, I couldn't make it through the first episode. Did they dub everyone's parts or is the sound off from the video? Even with me reading subs, I was so distracted by it looking like the sound was off when they were talking, I had to turn the show off. :(

Required fields are marked *

They dub everyone's parts. Apparently this has something to do with the broad range of dialects and accents in China; to make sure the viewing audience all understand, they dub over in standard pronunciation? So that means that the sound allllmost matches up with the mouth-movements, but not quite. Completely bizarre for anyone accustomed to voices being a huge part of acting, but it does explain why Korean actors can suddenly take lead roles in Chinese productions.

It's funny to see how two sides of the world tackled the same problem. How do you cope with an actor whose voice won't be understood by some of the viewing audience? In the West, we put the onus on the actor and they have to hire dialect coaches and they're responsible for having a working accent even when auditioning. Our catch is that you need to sound like a near-native English-speaker, like Lupita Nyong'o (Mexican-Kenyan) or Alexander Skarsgard (Swedish).

China went in the other direction, deciding to tackle comprehension in post-production. So they can cast literally anyone and dub them, but the tradeoff is that it's obvious this is a highly processed product, interrupting the suspension of disbelief. And of course, for those of us used to viewing the voice as an important acting instrument, it can completely throw us off because it feels almost like animation more than live film.

No idea why it evolved that way, but it's interesting.

Required fields are marked *

I personally am ok with the dubbing if it's done well and the voice matches the actor. Also it allows you to watch a drama in another language without having to read subtitles. Heck, we have to suspend our disbelief for 99% dramas anyways....

1
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I vastly prefer the subtitles, I think it's cultural, but I acknowledge it's weird - I have a much easier time fusing the sound of the actor's voice with the subtitle than I do watching the actor's mouth out of sync with the words. Even though that means I'm watching the actor's face less often, because I'm reading.

Also the dubbing appears to strip out ambient noise. I'm used to foley effects being layered under dialogue, but this is BOTH dialogue and foley being added in, so the background scenery feels dead to me. I can tell the voices aren't coming from that location.

How does that work, when the characters HS and NJY are pretty much the opposite of each other yet both the actresses would have a similar vibe to each other?(since they're the top 2 and assuming that the quality of the actresses are high)

I can do anything for JCW. I did watch the 1st episode and ended up forwarding most of it except to see his face. He looked very pretty in the TV series but the extra make up and cheesy lines was little too much for me. It was also hard watching him play the usual Kdrama arrogant/mean lead. I didn't like how the production company pimped him out at the workout scene. We all like shower and workout scenes but it just looked too exaggerated when you have JCW doing pull ups while using his mouth to pull up his tank top. The production made it so unnatural to have him flash his abs. They should've had had him remove his tank top during workout. I will try again with ep2. I might just have to rematch my Healer Blu-ray to see JCW. ♡

Having viewed the first episode of Whirlwind Girl 2, I too was frustrated by the lack of depth, but ... Ji Chang Wook is probably making a ton of money - and the drama looked like standard Kung Fu Theater fair. He also sticks out in the drama like a sore thumb; Chang Wookshi has that natural relaxed way about him on screen that is different from the Chinese actors. He's one of those men who is more pleasing to watch on film, than say in a snapshot from a photo shoot. Agreed, they exploited his handsome physique ridiculously and will probably continue to do so, but I smiled because he wasn't sporting a fake tan like all the American guys do. No makeup on his abs to make them more defined ...

Give him a break. Having a solid financial base gives actors freedom to pick and choose their future roles and he's building that base. He's young; give him a break. Healer was a perfect recipe of great writing, casting, and reigned in restraint by a director. That perfect storm doesn't happen often and it's giving him the opportunity to make good money for his future family and have the ability to pick and choose what he wants to do in the future.
