Kim So-hyun to romance Yoo Seung-ho in MBC’s Ruler–Master of the Mask

Now, this is a lineup I can get excited about: Kim So-hyun (Bring It On, Ghost) has confirmed taking the lead role opposite Yoo Seung-ho (Remember—Son’s War) in Ruler–Master of the Mask, an MBC historical drama set to air next year.

Ruler—Master of the Mask is described as a fresh, youthful melodrama-romance, which is a descriptor that appeals to me because we’ve seen quite a number of youthful sageuk rom-coms, but not many (or any?) that take a dramatic approach. And these two actors are great choices to carry a weightier youthful melo, having shown great range of emotion and ability in their prior works, starting from their child-acting years.

The drama is set in Joseon in the 1700s and is based on true events surrounding the attempt to privatize the control of the water supply, although it will also take creative license in fictionalizing aspects of the story. (That’s a disclaimer that hardly seems necessary anymore; where once sageuks were sticklers for historical facts, now they’re mostly historical fiction.) Yoo Seung-ho plays a lonely crown prince who fights against a secret organization made up of the wealthy and powerful movers and shakers in society who want to control the water.

Kim So-hyun has been cast to play a righteous, intelligent young woman whose father is executed on Yoo Seung-ho’s orders. That spurs her on a revenge mission against him, but she’ll end up falling in love with him instead. This mortal-enemies-to-lovers setup is like drama crack to me; give it to me now.

Yoo Seung-ho and Kim So-hyun have actually been in the same drama before, although they didn’t act together: She played the child version of the heroine in the 2012 melodrama I Miss You, while he played her friend-confidante-co-conspirator in adulthood. They’ve both got plenty of sageuk experience under their belts: Kim So-hyun played the evil jealous rival in The Moon That Embraces the Sun and followed that with a turn as the evil jealous sister in Rooftop Prince. Yoo Seung-ho cut his teeth on historical dramas, and is no stranger to playing royalty: He played young kings in Legend, King and I, and Queen Seon-deok (and King of Heaven in Arang and the Magistrate, which is like half-credit). I’m pretty excited about the prospect of seeing them act together, and will be keeping a close eye on developments for this show.

Ruler–Master of the Mask is being planned as a Wednesday-Thursday drama in MBC, to air in the first half of next year.

Even though I love chae soo bin I don't want her as the second female lead, the less the similarities btw this drama and love in the moonlight the lesser the fan war and headache so they shouldn't cast kim ji won (the original female lead of moonlight) or the second lead in moonlight

I've always thought So Hyun and Seung Ho are family related because they look really similar, like twins. And now they're together for the leads. Cool.

I often dream of a drama where so ji sub and yoo seung ho are brothers and son ye jin and kim so hyun are sisters and we get a plot where the brothers fall inlove with the sisters but I don't think yoo seung ho can ever play a second male to any actor again.

Why are there so many complaints about the age gap? I mean before the LFG aired, there are so many complaints 'bout So Hyun and Taecyeon's age gap, but what now? They're all wrong 'bout it 'cause KSH and Taecyeon has an amazing chem. They even praised both of them.
And I do think that she will also have a good chemistry with Seung Ho too. For me, age gap doesn't really matter 'cause Kim So Hyun is a chemistry-queen. So what's the fuss all about? Come on guys! Let's just support them both.

I'm can't wait to see them both. Kim So Hyun unnie and Seung Ho oppa Fighting!

I am a big fan of Bo Gum myself, but I couldn't finish Moonlight Drwan By Cloud because of poor writing. It has high ratings just because it has Bo Gum and Yoo Jung in it. What a shame.

Melodrama + Yoo Seung Ho + So Hyun, in Joseon era. So promising. They are both no strangers to play royalty.I hope this show will be different from so many boring youth sageuk drama out there. I cried my eyes out while watching Kim So Hyun (little Lee Soo Yeon) and Yoo Seung Ho (Harry Borrison) in Missing You, and I cried my heart out for him again in Remember war of the son. Both have Really amazing acting!

Have faith! prepare my fragile heart well, and look forward to the air date.

Don' t take wrong of my words. I became his fan from Hello Monster, and love him the most in Reply 1988. I watched Coin Locker Girl and checked out Tomorrow Cantabile, too.

As for MDBC, I enjoyed it until ep 7 or 8, forced myself continue to 13 and ended up reading recap here. I said it's because of poor writing, not Bogum.

OMy Drama Gods.. I have always wanted this pairing, and i never expected an answer this fast, i have zero percent concern on the age-gap, sincerely because even if other's think that kdramas should hire an older actress, i think these young actresses deserved this lead roles, it is afterall the fruit of their labor, and they are no stranger to talent, instead of giving roles to untalented drama idols.
On the side note, this concerning comparisons with MDBC is igniting my undiscovered nuclear bomb inside, its really frustrating, please stop people, i never noticed it until i have read your comments, its not even noticeable, unless you have this really huge biases, geez, get a grip.

IMY's young Lee Soo-yeon and adult Harry Borrison reunion! These two are great former child actors and I love them both! Looking forward to this! Hoping for the best for Ruler. <3

Initially imagined Yeo Jin-goo to be part of this drama as well (since Jin-goo said he wanted to befriend Seung-ho + So-hyun also mentioned about her desire to reunite with YJG when she becomes an adult) but then I'd rather see Jin-goo and So-hyun acting together in a modern romance drama when they're both legal so.. maybe next time... I can wait.

Same with me. I'm totally into park bo gum because of hello monster, because he was damn good playing the psycho. I love him in R88 too. Especially he is very cute and handsome. As well as yoo seung ho. I've been a fan of YSH ever since god of study era. My fav is in missing you. The possessive turned to obsessive man, psycho. But to be honest, MDBC was, not to offend anyone, quite common story, by using crossdressing, joseon era, rom-com theme. There were many drama like that, Sungkyunkwan, Scholar, etc. It was quite a pity because i hope PBG could explore melodrama as well. But it's different with Ruler. The same thing are just the leads' age, and its gap. It has different story and genre, which differentiate the broad range of emotions of the leads. Also, it's quite rare for a story set in joseon with youngsters like them, but in melodrama genre. Usually melodrama sageuk uses older cast, i mean 25 y.o or above. So it's new kind of story and even if it doesnt do as good as MDBC in ratings but i believe they got praised for their acting because melo is the genre that require great of emotions. Especially for young actors like them. Not to mention the popularity of the leads. Both YSH and KSH really popular, and KSH is very popular internationally after School 2015 and LFG.
