The Lonely, Shining Goblin goes from ancient warrior to modern man

I always figured there wasn’t a genre Gong Yoo (Big) hadn’t tackled, but actually, there is — the sageuk. Lucky for us, we get a glimpse of Gong Yoo in his first foray into sageuk territory and his transformation throughout the years as a goblin cursed with immortality in the latest teaser for tvN’s upcoming fantasy The Lonely, Shining Goblin.

It’s the story of a goblin who meets a high school girl claiming to be his mortal bride, the key to ending his immortality. Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap) plays said girl who has the fate of someone who should’ve died. In the teaser, she tells Gong Yoo that she can see him because she can see ghosts and asks if he’s a goblin. She also introduces herself and asserts that in approximately two hundred years, she will be his bride.

We first see the goblin as an ancient warrior with flowing mane and bloody sword as he fights in an epic battle. Fast-forward centuries later, when he comes face to face with the young woman purporting to be his bride. He laments his long and lonely existence at a graveyard where he’s dressed in a black suit, seemingly there to pay his respects to someone. At the end of the teaser, he reaches out his hand and we hear him say, “And at one point, I was a human being.”

The dark and dramatic sageuk footage was shot in September in the city of Gimje in the North Jeolla province, and the scenic cemetery scenes were shot in Quebec a month later. Lee Dong-wook (Bubblegum) and Yoo Inna (One More Happy Ending) also star as the goblin’s amnesiac reaper roommate and a chic chicken shop owner, respectively. Yook Sung-jae (Village: Secret of Achiara) plays a chaebol heir whose family has been looking after the goblin for generations.

There’s a haunting and mysterious beauty tinged with sadness in all the teasers that have come out so far, and I quite like the tone they’ve set. I sincerely hope this drama will allow us to forget the catastrophic mess that was Big. I think Gong Yoo deserves better and frankly, so do we. Perhaps the Goblin will be his and our saving grace.

tvN’s The Lonely, Shining Goblin will premiere on December 2 and will air on Fridays and Saturdays.

Can I just say that we need this man playing a sageuk please?

I've just imagined a brand new title with him, playing opposite Seo Hyun-Jin, who is killing it - as usual - in Doctor Kim.

Swoon.

Seriously! The first time I saw that teaser I immediately wrote a blog post about screw the Goblin, I need Gong Yoo in a sageuk NOW! I always thought before that he looked too modern for sageuk and was ok with him not doing them (despite it being my favorite genre), but now I can think of nothing I want more than for him to be a fierce sageuk warrior (ala Song Il Kook in Jumong, or something like that).

Uh oh, are they going all Scarlet Heart on us already? Maybe I'm just shocked because I didn't expect any period footage at all, even though I guess it makes sense since he's supposed to be centuries old.

Is it just me, or does Kim Go Eun's voice sound really different? Is she doing it on purpose?

Unfortunately, yes, she's doing that on purpose. ? I mean, major props for my girl for once again being able to totally immerse herself into a different role. I mean, she's like a totally different person based on the teasers/trailer. But I agree with Peach, the forced aegyo-filled voice can get annoying–fast. I'm just hoping her high pitched voice is an exaggeration to emphasize her young age, making way for her to use her real voice when she grows older. Hopeful thinking! Let's stay optimistic, y'all!

Sorry to interrupt .. but what is this aegyo filled voice ? I mean not the literal meaning.. it's that I am not able to identify .. somewhere I read so about SIG's acting in high school king. But actually I loved his acting there so much.. can you give me an example of someone else ? Couldn't recognize it with Kim go eun's clip too..

Hi Newbee! I first noticed the drastic change in her voice through the BTS/filming scenes. It kinda reminded me of her character in Monster, but more unnatural. I know how her natural speaking voice sounds, so I was quite taken aback when I heard her speak as Ji Eun-tak. If you watch a couple of her BTS vids from Goblin, you can clearly see/hear how she's trying hard to sound peppy/cherry/happy go lucky, which I don't blame her for because her character calls for it, but in comparison to her normal speaking voice, Eun-tak definitely has that sweet aegyo-filled tone in her voice. In the Goblin BTS vids, you can even see that after she finished her lines, she bursts out laughing because of how extremely happy and peppy she sounded.
At the end of the day, it's not really a big deal to me how she sounds, because I have faith in her to totally rock this role and make it all work out. ?????

i'm not the biggest fan of kim go-eun, but i found her voice okay in the trailer.

it's not something i'd have noticed on my own though. since she's supposed to be a high schooler, i think she's trying to sound like one and it seems okay to me. not particularly forced.

Whoa, at first I thought that Gong Yoo was also coming out in a new Saeguk movie along with his Goblin drama but all this is from the SAME drama!?

WOW, if my anticipation level wasn't high already, it's definitely skyrocketed at this point. I have a weakness for men with long manes - and Gong Yoo looks beautiful in all that armor and hair!

My only qualm is Kim Go-eun's character keeps calling him "Ajusshi" - it's like ugh - she's in high school and she knows he's like her uncle's age or something….why couldn't they make her a college student?!?

Cheese in the trap was a mess. And I didn't like her at all there.

She's is good in movies, I saw her and "Muse" and like her. But her tv shows...

0

She was the best thing in that mess for me. To each of their own.

0

I liked everyone in CITT, just not how the show went off the rails about 2/3 of the way through. *Sad again*

0

This is just from the little I've seen in the trailer but her acting felt a bit awkward like she wasn't really embodying the role. Maybe it's the way she was directed to act (I noticed her voice sounded higher than normal I guess to make her seem younger and it just sounds off). I could be totally wrong of course and hope I am.

I just don't want this to flop critically or ratings wise because of Gong Yoo. It really seemed that he was scared away from kdramas after Big.

Ahahha I like that dramas are fast becoming adjective. Don't go CIIT on us or Scarlet or don't pull a no-face on us.

Btw Kim Go Eun is a talented actress she just happened to have been caught in the middle of a mess that is CIIT and I hope she doesn't start looking more and more like Suzy. When I first saw their PR mats, I had to do a double take. I actually thought it was Suzy I was seeing.

Forget Gong Yoo. This is Kim Eun Sook that we are talking about. Though I am never a fan of her works, all her penned dramas are rating hit with none failed so far. Because of her clean streak and recent blockbuster hit DOTS, she managed to lure Gong Yoo back to dramaland. Too bad this drama it's airing on TvN. I would very much like to see how it fare on national TV.
But this year has been tricky for highly anticipated and big budget dramas. Uncontrollably Fond, Cinderella, Moon Lovers, Entourage all failed to deliver. They all looked promising to begin with so I am changing my route by paying attention to the underdogs like Weightlifting Fairy.

Yea would be nice to see it on the public tv and see the craze haha.. not that TvN is not good, but with the smaller group of audience, there's just a limitation to how best it can go..

Actually there's reasons behind all those failing drama u mentioned (be it acting, editing or the writing..) Maybe the expectations were high in the first place, so when they fail to even deliver, they get crushed even more badly.. Its a all in one package (In fact i think its good that more and more audience nowadays dont just get "lured" because of the cast or good writer or good director, but they are appreciating everything as a whole.. of course giving credits wherever due too..)

Most underdog shows turn out well because they did well primarily, maybe on top of other dramas in the same time-slot not doing well, thus it helps them even more.. MDBC was a underdog (maybe compared to scarlet heart, yes on the surface) but PBG and KYJ is experienced and the show deliver everything pretty well thus its deserving of its rating.. in fact even without MDBC, i doubt scarlet heart can break 15% anyway.. even dr romantic that took over the show already achieved better rating compared to scarlet heart..

Scarlet Heart only has Lee Jun Ki. Him all alone against PBG and KYJ and the entire things that worked magnificently for MDBC. It's tiring for him pulling the one-man show again.

I agree lee jun ki did a very good job and some other actors are what really kept me continue watching..

Ironically enough, it was just the other day I was asserting to my bff that Seo In Guk is my fave above all others, and I quote, "even Gong Yoo!" lol. But I'd be lying if I said this trailer didn't remind me why GY was top of my list in those blessed newbie days before I knew who SIG was.

That said, SIG is still bae, now and forever. I just won't complain if this drama makes a good case as to why Gong Yoo is a firm second. xD

(A note on the hope/dread of how this drama will turn out: to be brutally honest, there is too much potential eye-candy at stake here for me to bear entertaining the idea that this drama could flop. My heart and ovaries refuse to allow that thought to compute.

So, while everyone shares their opinion on this drama's chances, I am sitting here in la-la-la-la land with my hands clapped firmly over my ears. This drama will be wonderful, this drama will be as beautiful as Gong Yoo's face, if anyone says different I'm not listeningggg...)

I really want an action packed Korean drama in the same vein of the first couple seconds of this teaser. I know some have done it but I kind of want them to really commit to it, lol.

Joseon is limited to just politics and palace intrigue. The era that fought the war on the battlefield were pre-Joseon. The 3 kingdoms (early/later) and Goryeo.

I'm rewatching "Dae Jo Yeong" and it's packed with battles from the very beginning. I'm always intrigue with Goguryeo and her amazing loyal war lords. My favorite - Commander Yang Manchun, Lord of Ansi Fortress.

Hummn never thought of him in a sageuk and still don't. I did not like Lee Dong-wook in his first sageuk. Some rock it and some don't.

I seriously think Moon Lovers spent all its money on star actors and forgot to add the extras which give any sageuk a fleshed out feel (like actual palace servants - the place was empty!)

BUT this is not about Moon Lovers lol. I'm intrigued by Goblin. It looks good. It feels strange. We'll see.

About KGE being a high school student, I dont really mind. The story is kinda have a Japanese manga's vibe. I read lots of fantasy Manga & Manhwa, and most of the characters are students involved with immortal beings such as shinigami, angel, werewolf or vampire.
Hope Goblin fullfiled our expectation!! Cant wait!!

Most of the fusion fantasy romance sageuks don't have war scenes.

The more traditional/conventional sageuks is where you'd find them. The epic battles in KBS's "Jeong Do-jeon" (50eps) was directed by Kang Byung-taek. They were well done and it was worth the big budget.
Director/producer Kang Byung-taek is one of the reason why I rooted for Moonlight. I know he wouldn't mess up production with all the sageuk experience under his belt. I hope he'd director another epic sageuk soon.

Thanks for this report from the GOBLIN front... But it really needed some kind of public health warning. I was shocked out of my gourd when I clicked on that link. Good thing I was sitting down.

Be still my heart...

Uh, could someone just drop me off at Doldam Hospital? Thanks... Where was I?

In that split second, I realized that Gong Yoo hadn't done sageuk, and all I can say is, it's high time, even if it's only as a flashback. I just watched him two nights ago in the action thriller THE SUSPECT, and he was dynamite as a North Korean spy. For a second I thought I was watching Song Il-Kook in A MAN CALLED GOD... which was a terrific Bondesque romp.

Drama gods, please give Gong Yoo a sword and send him back to the Three Kingdoms era for an extended stay. As someone suggested above, pair him with Seo Hyun-Jin... Yep -- and give her a sword, too! She was utterly kickass in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. Ditto for the absolutely kingly Lee Jae-Ryong and Jo Hyun-Jae.

PS - That scene on the breakwater looked like something out of ONE FINE DAY.

I won't talk about Gong Yoo being handsome, attractive, sexy, charming, charismatic, masculine (which he definitely is in my and many peoples eyes) or not because beauty is in the eyes of the beholder but there is NO WAY he's short, how is a 1,82 cm tall man is supposedly short?!! and he's someone who was praised for his manner-legs!! http://www.soompi.com/2012/10/04/gong-yoos-legs-are-not-just-walking-tools-but-manner-legs/

Gong yoo is 184 cm
I'm surrprised she said gong yoo isn't tall and isn't masculine just watch his drama coffee prince & his movies silenced, suspect, Train to Busan and then you can judge him

I have watched all his dramas and movies and I like him as an actor but I also think he looks quite short. Maybe that's because of his partners, maybe they have been too tall. And talking about Coffee Prince, it's less interesting his project for me and I didn't find him masculine there. Dunno why. Everything depends on personal taste

I am guessing you have not watched coffee prince. Watch it and you will see everything you told you cannot see in him and more. ;)

Look how hot and intense he is. I'm sorry but this is a 100 times more appealing and engaging than saeguk pretty boys. Please someone be inspired to write and cast this man in an action/drama saeguk Kdrama or movie. PLEASE!!! He looks so good in the modern scenes too but all I see are bland, pretty shots.

Please let this story be good. I'm just hoping he signed up after seeing how good the whole (or majority) of the script was and not just because of the writer. Not after Big.

Yes also not feeling the heroine being a high schooler. Kdramas stay pairing underage girls with adult and older men in their stories AND behind the scenes. Seriously enough. I hope there is a time jump before they start to even come close to developing feeling for each other.

I'm approaching this drama with caution, though this new teaser certainly piques my interest. I just wish they choose another name for it. Goblin is always an ugly and creepy creature for me.

Gong Yoo definitely looks good in sageuk gear. The teaser looks interesting, but I hope Go Eun is just putting on that voice for a short while, cause it's sound kind of annoying. A lot of shows have been disappointing this year, so my expectations are low, but I hope this turns out well.

This trailer looks so...KES style. Too much hype and too overrated. Will scip this drama even though I'm a fan of some actors.
