Top 10 favorite drama bromances

javabeans: It seemed only natural to follow up our list of favorite couples with our list of favorite bromances, which are sometimes just as compelling as the love stories—er, I mean romantic love stories, since bromances are love stories of another kind.

girlfriday: The best kind! Bromantic love is one of my favorite types of love in dramaland, especially when they’re of the epic and gut-wrenching variety.

javabeans: Although, we can’t leave out the sparkling, comedic kind, either, since a bromance that makes me smile is worth a lot!

girlfriday: This is true. Never underestimate cute bromance.

javabeans: This list was initially our list of favorite dramaland friendships, which included relationships of both genders, but we realized that what makes an awesome bromance is distinct from what makes awesome girlfriends, and we thought it was worth splitting the lists to highlight them in their own element.

girlfriday: Or… maybe we just had a hard time picking ten and wanted to write about twenty.

javabeans: Is our plan to write ten Top 10’s going to turn into twenty by the end of the month?

girlfriday: In our defense, we never said we were good at math.

1. School 2013 (2012-13)

girlfriday: If there was ever a bromance to rival a romantic love story, it’s the one in School 2013, between Lee Jong-seok and Kim Woo-bin. Unencumbered by romantic lovelines (pfft, who needs those?), their story was all about the reconciliation between two best friends whose relationship had gone epically sideways. From its angry, hostile beginnings, these two apparent enemies turned high school into a war zone, where every run-in threatened to burst into a violent clash, and we were left wondering what frightening past they shared. Only to have it turn out that they were once two inseparable friends who had no one else in the world but each other.

The reveal of their happy past was what made their present so painful, when we realized that they were lashing out because they just missed each other. Their bromance had every bit of the emotional pull of any traditional love story, with all the baggage and heartache of separated love, regret, and longing. Their emotion was so raw and evident, but hampered by their inability to express their feelings properly to each other, which was a great source of realistic angst for two teenage boys. But sometimes, the only words you need are “dumb bastard,” because if you say it enough times with a look that means “my bestest friend in the whole wide world,” no bromance can stay broken forever.

2. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band (2012)

javabeans: Shut Up: Flower Boy Band remains one of my all-time favorite dramas, and a huge factor in its emotional pull is the the six-way friendship that forms the backbone of the show. Despite a title that sounds like fluff, the substance of the show was a lot more thoughtful and poignant than the term “flower boys” might suggest, built on a crew of sympathy-stirring underdogs, each with his own struggles to bear. These weren’t just troublemaking high schoolers who strutted around thinking themselves too cool for school—the drama showed each one as an abandoned boy, cast aside by society and finding new family with each other. Music was the common thread holding them together, and the show excelled at weaving in their musical journey alongside their stories of personal growth, both as the source of joy and then as a cause of conflict. The show took care to portray multifaceted dynamics within the groups and among different configurations of the friends, giving their struggles and relationships a realistic, gritty quality that made it all the more triumphant when angsts resolved and brotherly love prevailed. Rock on.

3. Answer Me 1988 (2015-16)

girlfriday: The entire Answer Me franchise is full of wonderful true-to-life friendships, but the childhood friends in Answer Me 1988 were pretty unbeatable in the bromance department. They were just a group of friends who grew up on one street, but as they became teenagers, their dynamic began to change, all because one of them was a girl. Unfamiliar romantic feelings and crossed wires made for some heady adolescent angst, topped off by the fact that we knew, of course, that she’d marry one of them in her future. But rather than become rivals in the traditional dramaland way, our two romantic contenders were endlessly loving and caring and devoted to one other, proving that two friends really can put their friendship first, and that a girl doesn’t have to come between them.

What really defined this group of friends was the blurring of family and friendship, and the feeling that they’d practically grown up in different rooms of one house, and all been parented by everyone else’s mom and dad as much as their own. That sense of community came through in every single one of their relationships, even the ones that seemed light on the surface. When two of them actually ended up real brothers, I cried happy snotty tears thinking of the family they would become. Because the only thing I cared about in anyone’s future was that these kids would remain friends.

4. Sungkyunkwan Scandal (2010)

HeadsNo2: So this bromance technically has a girl in it, but it counts if she was considered one of the boys—and better yet, became a leader among men on the basis of her intelligence. This foursome was a true meeting of minds—and for good reason, when all four were enrolled in the prestigious Sungkyunkwan University, where they would become future leaders and thinkers who shaped their country. The crossdressing-heroine premise allowed our heroine to get her foot into the hallowed halls of Sungkyunkwan, where she became the glue that held our group of disparate personalities together. There was this sense that when all four of them were together, they could actually bring about real, lasting change to the world they lived in. They had youth on their side and their bond as friends, and even the king trusted them to be his eyes and ears.

What made this foursome sparkle was that each of the relationships was distinct and rich, whether it was the broody one catching on to the heroine’s secret and becoming her silent protector, or the prickly leader who was drawn to her for her brains, or the flamboyant fashionista keeping moods light and tempers from flaring. Each of them was idealistic in their own ways, all dreaming of a new Joseon based on equality and fairness. If only they had achieved it, but at least they tried.

5. The King 2 Hearts (2012)

girlfriday: There are a lot of good king-bodyguard bromances in dramas—the life-and-death stakes, the themes of duty and honor and loyalty all but guarantee heartbreaking man-love—but this one between a childish, reluctant king and his stalwart soldier is one that made me laugh as much as it made me cry, and it’s one for the ages. Part of its charm is in the humor of the mismatched bromance: Our hero was decidedly unheroic, as a spoiled and lazy prince who only ever worked hard at inventing creative excuses to get out of doing things. The badass bodyguard was assigned the seemingly menial task of babysitting princey, only to end up becoming the person who shaped him into a true leader. Earnest Bot was so hilariously humorless and sincere in contrast to the sarcastic king, which made for some of the funniest mishaps in basic communication, made even more ridiculous by the king’s petty jealousy. These two rarely understood what the other was saying, and yet somehow they came to be friends and brothers in arms who laid down their lives for each other and their country. This king was truly only as good as his best soldier, who remained so steadfast in his loyalty that the king stepped into his big boy shoes just to prove that faith warranted. This bromance left a permanent hole in my heart, and nothing short of a hundred happy Jo Jung-seok dramas will fill it.

6. Heartless City (2013)

HeadsNo2: When I think of epic, heart-shattering, I-want-them-to-be-together-forever bromance, I think of Soo and Shi-hyun from Heartless City. Even in a category dedicated to brotherly love, Soo and Shi-hyun stand out for the incredible loyalty they displayed to each other. One was the anchor and mentor, the other a loose cannon who followed him around like a puppy, and their onscreen chemistry was so intense that you almost believed you were seeing two real friends whose relationship had actually been forged by the fires of prison and the seedy, unrelenting world of drug trafficking.

But despite their roles as criminals, they were also two men searching for meaning in their bleak lives. When a huge discovery threatened to tear apart their bond when one’s identity was revealed to be a lie, the other had the chance to leave him behind. Instead, the two grew closer than ever—and even drove one to make the ultimate sacrifice for his best friend, no matter that it was a grisly, horrible fate he willingly gave himself over to. If that’s not the ultimate bromance, I don’t know what is. (Even better: They’re super adorable real life friends now. I know!)

7. Descended From the Sun (2016)

javabeans: This drama flew high on the wings of its bright, sparkly romance, but for me it was the bromance between our Alpha Team buddies that provided the biggest source of feel-good moments. Each character was charismatic and entertaining on his own—the smooth-talking, always-in-command Song Joong-ki and his stone-faced, dryly hilarious sidekick, Jin Gu—but when you put these two opposites together, they sparked with comic energy, quick banter, and a fierce loyalty that you almost never saw on the surface but could sense just the same. Even if they were just chatting up random girls (or then lying about it to avoid being shredded by their girlfriends). When you’re bros who fight side-by-side in war zones and risk your lives for each other on a daily basis, it goes without saying that your bond is rock-solid; never did I feel that they didn’t love each other like family, even if I did think they’d both die of mortification if they ever said the words aloud. Hey, sometimes love can be expressed on the inside!

8. The Lonely Shining Goblin (2016-17)

HeadsNo2: The reason why enemies-to-lovers works so well as a romantic trope is because all the bickering and angst whets our appetite for the payoff—the more two people hate each other at the outset, the more satisfying it is to watch them come around and bond. The warring roommates of The Lonely Shining Goblin not only have a bickering relationship in the present that plays for some laugh-out-loud comedy, but they have a 900-year-old backstory full of misunderstandings and bitter hurts that tugs at our heartstrings. It doesn’t hurt that the chemistry between Gong Yoo and Lee Dong-wook is crackling, and their amazing sense of comedic timing bolstered by rapid-fire banter and deadpan deliveries.

For a goblin who never made family or friends and a grim reaper who always lived by his rules, the true sign of friendship was when they began to act out of character and break their own rules for each other, even when they weren’t ready to admit why. Never has “I wish you would die” sounded so much like “I love you, man.” Plenty of romances are Fated To Be, but a bromance backed by heaven and fate? What more can we ask for?

9. A Gentleman’s Dignity (2012)

girlfriday: Clearly writer Kim Eun-sook has knack for depicting winsome bromances, given that this is the third drama of hers on this list. A Gentleman’s Dignity is perhaps the lightest of these, but it’s an entire show dedicated to bromance, so we couldn’t very well leave it off. It’s not heart-crushing bromance like some of the others here, but as fluffy as the drama is, it’s one of the more realistic, down-to-earth portrayals of regular dudes who just love their bros. If you ever wondered what the high school bromances of dramaland would look like in middle age, it would be these guys: successful, confident, still bumbling at love, and not an ounce more mature than they were at eighteen.

The drama had a lot of fun in having the ajusshi cast portray their high school selves, and we got to see a four-way friendship that really felt like it had lasted over twenty years, complete with inside jokes, embarrassing stories, and exaggerated basketball skills. What felt the most realistic to me was their refusal to grow up even in their forties, as they faced marriage or fatherhood. A Gentleman’s Dignity is a celebration of guys being guys, that proves that while ajusshihood may be inevitable, oppa is a state of mind. And it’s your friends that keep you there.

10. Sandglass (1995)

javabeans: We can probably look to Sandglass as dramaland’s original epic bromance, which holds a place in my heart to this day for the rock-solid characterizations that drove the story: Three friends (two guys, one girl) grow up together and weather turbulent times at each other’s sides, only to find their lives diverging in significant, heart-wrenching ways as they head into adulthood. One friend becomes a righteous prosecutor, the other a hardened gangster, with the woman caught between the two as a casino owner’s daughter (and a badass in her own right). We felt the same conflict that drove the prosecutor, who did his best to save his old friend while being constrained by his principles, and felt that same mix of hope for reconciliation and despair at the thought that it might not happen. It was a setup designed for epic tragedy, guaranteed to twist our hearts and keep us praying against hope for a miracle to swoop in to resolve this impossible conflict—proving that while not all bromances end in happily ever afters, the tears, angst, and sympathy pangs last forever.

Somehow I just forget, didn't High School King of Savvy also loaded with bromance too? I remembered fondly that during my time watching SIG slaying with his romance nuances, I also loved the show due to Minsuk and his 2 best friends antics! Haha that's why I said SIG are no stranger to bromance, he is just so natural at it!

Funny, my first comment will be about sismance, despite reading this blog since a long time now (great job by the way, thank you for all the giggles). I just would like to answer to Bili Bala Pabo Bara. Please do not let your expectations in friendship going down. One says that drama is bigger than life but the bromance and sismance depicted in most dramas feel right to me. True friendship is like that, you always have the people in your thoughts, you are carrying them in your life even when they are not physically present in your daily life. They know our failures, your hopes, they remember what you are at your core when your have lost yourself. You never can really growing apart. During my twenties, I moved over to another country and one of my best friend get married. It was a bit pre-internet time, I lost her husband's name, I looked for her but without success. We choose two very different lives. I missed her and I spoke to her to all the new wonderful friends I have made, because she was such a big part of my childhood and teen years. 14 years later, she finally found me when I was moving once again to another country. We spent exactly five minutes top to give us a resume of our gap years then we have just carried on with our friendship. We are still thinking alongside, still echoing our feelings in each other. And even before we found each other again, her daughter known everything about me (she even eats her apples as I eat mine, to copycat me, when she has never seen me once !). Loved ones are the best part of us.

Ahhh bromance is one of my favorite things about kdramas! :)

I like and agree with a lot of the bromances in this top 10 list. Happy to see Heartless City's Soo and Shi Hyun in this list!!

I watched The King 2 Hearts so long ago. The mention of this bromance makes me want to rewatch it to refresh my memory...

Song Joong Ki and Yoo Ah In's bromance in Sungkyunkwan Scandal is one of my ultimate faves!

I also loved the bromance in Witch's Romance between Park Seo Joon's and Yoon Hyun Min's characters. It wasn't an epic one, but it was super, super cute. ^^

My top 10

1. I Remember You - the bromance of real brothers beats all, you can´t argue. It is so precious, sweet and heartbreaking and so well acted, that you can sense "hyung" and "dongseng" just from how they stand. I´ll never get enough of it

2. Sungkyukwan Scandal - seriously, Song Joong Ki and Yoo Ah In got my heart racing more thaan the main couple.

3. 38 Police Squad - the most unlikely, the most unbreakable, the most determined, this bromance is just as strong as Ma Dong Seok´s arms. Yung Do leaning on that car just nonchalantly waiting, sharing that blanket, building trust it felt like maybe it is possible after all to find allies in this world? maybe?

4. School 2013 - there is about 1001 reasons to choose from already.

5. Coffee Prince - I would say bromance until the gender reveal, then romance. but in the beginning it WAS true "bromance" despite one being a girl. the other bromances plae here anyway

6. Pinocchio - Dal Po and hyung.

7. Shopping King Louis - Louis and Joong Won, Louis and In Sung, Louis and cyborg butler Kim. True it is more a puppymance than bromance, and it was pretty much the oly option on the table, cause nobody can resist a Louis.

8. Kill Me, Heal Me - Cha Do Hyun and Shin Se Gi. Their farewell, man....

9. Man From the Star - the ET scene. when your girlfriends little brother becomes your no. 1 fan.

10. Faith. WOO-DAL-CHI!!!!!

My suggestions for Top 10:
Top 10 "partners in crime" (teamwork, same mindset, secretary and boss etc)
Top 10 eccentric leads
Top 10 dramas for Halloween

Thank you so much for this list! My heart is bleeding again, King2Hearts, School 2013, SUFBB. No wonder my favourite dramas have epic bromances.

I don't know if this falls under bromance (more like reluctant bromance), but I am still mourning for the prosecutor in City Hunter. Unfortunately that bromance wasn't as developed as the romance.

Let's make an 'also recommended' list.
I have fond memories of the Hwarang in Queen Seon Deok , The Three Musketeers, Chuno, Cantabile Tomorrow (the violinist and his grouchy director), Drinking Solo Norangyin trio <3 . And obviously Sassy Go Go .

I began this post with a bleeding heart. Now I'm smiling. Thank you Sassy Go Go.

1) I knew gf would write up the best bromance ever! It's not for passing whimsy that my fan email is Woob soo13, when I made it 2 years after the drama. They taught me sooooo much and tore up my heart just to put it back together.

2) Yasssss!!!!! That's all.
Okay, one more thing. Made me a fan of most of the boys. Sung Joon is a bias, L was decent, Kim Minsuk is bae, Lee Hyun Jae can you please come back to dramaland, and of course Lee Min-ki's special appearance!

3) I'd probably put it lower or on an ensemble list. Idk it warmed my heart but didn't move me that much.

4, 5, 6) Haven't seen yet. I know!

7) I love that the pic is the first time they met and it's still perfectly bromantic!
Also, this: http://pin.it/7BcF8T- ?

8) I don't go that far into supernatural but they have been tempting.
9) Couldn't get past the first ep. Will try again.
10) Haven't seen it.

P.S. this is like the most I've known so far in this years Top 10 posts.

Soo's and Shi-Hyun's bromance hurts me. Heartless City is one of my all-time-favorite dramas. I could not recommend this drama enough to my friends, but they don't really pick up serious dramas. So I have no one to talk about how good this drama is. If you are looking for looking real friendship, I would be happy to recommend this drama (and you'll be stunned by Jung Kyung-Ho's heart-wrenching acting. Because I do. Haha)

And now JKH and YHM are my favorite real-life K-bromance couple. As much as I hate YHM's character in Falling for Innocence, the fact that he and JKH are real bestest friends bugs me sometimes lol

School 2013 - Good lord yessssss! Go Nam Soon & Park Heung So, let's just say rooting for the bully never felt so right.

Heartless City - There is a scene I sometimes remember randomly that gives me shivers.. When Baksa-adeul smashed his liquor glass with the flat of his hand in front of Jin-sook because Soo was hurt. Shivers I tell you

Sungkyunkwan Scandal (Yoo Ah In & Song Joong Ki's characters) - Was my entrance to YAI, SJK obsession. That dratted drama just flung the door wide open. To Geol-oh and Yeo-rim and crackling electric hilarity.

But good loRD where is I Remember You/Hello Monster brofest on the list?? Real separated brothers or not I can't help comparing and some of the selection seem pale in comparison.

Also, it seems like less people on DB are familiar with That Winter The Wind Blows or at least don't love the drama like I do? If we're talking bromance well Soo and Jin-Sung were few steps away from shooting a selfless bl! Ahhh, jokes aside what I love about bromance is the loyalty thing - they seriously make loyalty seem deeper than love. Well I guess it is a love, the kind that seems this tight unbreakable special bond that's uniquely male and immune to interference. Until there is interference - love, birth, betrayal - and then the angst begins. Anyway, that's what I love about Heartless City & TWTWB. In fact, by the end of That Winter, 2% of me was almost begging for Jin Sung (Kim Bum's character) to think of someone else other than Soo (Jo In Sung's) for once, that yappy 2% was all "Its okay to betray Soo this once Jin Sung ah think of your parents, think of your girl! Think of plain common sense! No one within reason could blame you if you caught some self-preservation at this point!". Boy oh boy the angst was good and crazy. And that ending, what. was. it. I'm still not sure what happened. Somehow that's the best part.

I just remembered Can You Hear My Heart , there's some serious makjang there, and some serious bromance. I guess my taste skews more to the intense types lol. I like all bromance but those ones that wring you dry are my top.

There were several bromances in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG that were variously touching, dignified, and hilarious.

1) Crown Prince Myung-Nong and his faithful bodyguard, Kang-bok.

2) Former general King Muryeong and his second-in-command, Marshal Hae, who always had his back.

3) Reformed highwaymen Ddol-dae and Mang-koo (aka Smarty and Farty), and arguably Seol-nan as well, since she was considered one of the boys. The way they supported each other in basic training, and later in their careers as undercover operatives and brothers-in-arms, was heartwarming.

4) The childhood brotherliness between princely cousins Myung-nong and Jin-moo; alas, it later fell victim to politics.

Another great bromance is to be found in the film THE CLASSIC between two school chums who fall for the same girl. One of the guys bows out in favor of his buddy.

Answer Me 88 - Feels more like a great squad/ensemble than bromance, we can't leave Deuk-soon out!

(We can't leave the whole neighborhood out tbh).

K2H - I love this drama & I might need to watch again soon to refresh my memory, mostly I remember it for the main OTP, (and the great performances, I was wildly impressed by Lee Seung Gi, Ha Ji Won, Lee Sung Min and all the others, even the terrible English speakers lol)

SUFBB - I got too invested with the wrong character (Lee Minki) I didn't know he was just a cameo! I had to stop watching, later continued but still haven't completed the drama, the switcheroo was brutal for me. Like AM88 this feels more like an awesome squad/ensemble although a some relationships stood out from the pack here and there.

Goblin - Their domesticity before the sh*t hit the fan was the best.
- Sitting at a table while Gobling heating eggs for Reaper with his hand and Reaper frosting Goblin's beer bottles, also by hand.
- Their crazy live games (like video games but they play physically mentally and with their powers).
- Couple cooking (Gobling in charge of meat since Reaper is a vegetarian, really the only house work Gob does since he's lazy af but likes his meat.) I look forward to what tomorrow brings with these two.

Descendants - They were just so cool. I loved their deadpan exchanges, or more often Wolf = deadpan, Big Boss = outrageous, lol.

Anyway, these other mentions seem more of great ensembles/squad goals:
Answer Me series
SUFBB
Age Of Youth
Gentleman's Dignity

I just knew that Heung-soo and Nam-soon will be first in the list. Reading all the comments about them makes me want to rerun School 2013 for the nth times. Although I kinda sad that Yeol and Ha-joon didn't make it to the list. The amount of love they have for each other..... ahh~

Since I love bromance soooo much, this list gives me more dramas to watch; Heartless City, Shut Up Flower Boy Band, The King 2 Hearts, and of course Descended of the Sun.

There are so many great bromances. Most of my favourites are already on this list, but I think one that is too often overlooked is Kim Young Ho and Chief Min in Oh My Venus. It's understated, and played in the small moments, but it's obvious how much they mean to each other.

So happy that most of my favourite bromances are up there. The only other thing I'd add is the bromance in City Hunter -Lee Min Ho & Kim Sang Ho. While one serves justice for the day, the other serves home cooked meals & shops off of catalogues. Adorbs.

Your beautiful write up on the King2hearts bromance, Girlfriday, just tore apart my barely-mended, Earnest Bot-loving heart into a million pieces again.

And lols on your last sentence in the beginning description - ‘We never said we were good at math’

Love School 2013, Reply 1988, and SKKS from the shows that I've watched. I also love the bromance between Prince Lee Yeong and his eunach (not KYJ) as well as the prince and his guard in Moonlight Drawn by Clouds. Another pair would be LWK and Jisoo in Sassy Go Go. ^^

I feel like there are way to many good bromances in dramaland for DOTS to have a spot on this list. Maybe I'm just bitter, but everything in that drama was so meh to me. I'll never understand the hype.

Okay! Now this a very late post but..whatevs!
I just wanted to mention 'Signal' on this Bromance list because the chemistry between Haeyoung and Jaehan was so charging and heartfelt with every transmission they had..I never realised until the end that they never met each-other in person and yet..the horrible states they had to go through in different timelines brought the best in themselves and a solid Bromance on screen..beyond time..beyond nature!

Oh wow now that you've mentioned it, Haeyoung & Jaehan really had some epic bromance going on. There was crackling chemistry between them, and the amount of trust that they had in each other even though they're in different dimensions was remarkable beyond conventional measures.

If the list had been made last year, maybe Boys over Flowers would have a place in it, but due to the recent and addictive DOTS and Goblin, it was taken off the list unfailingly XD

Weird, haven't even seen School 2013 but I just knew they should be no.1. All because I saw Jong-seok and Woo-bin's lovely affection towards one another when both first appeared on Running Man after starred in the drama.

And here I am wishing for my (un)lucky stars to grant me a DB recap on Heartless City. ?
I could always watch it, of course, but it's just better to read deeper comments and reviews from everyone else too. ?

And it's truly amusing how this reel-to-real bromance had the most notorious rivalry in Falling For Innocence. Haha! JKH & YHM is ❤️.

GOSH!!!

YESSS School 13.

I don't think I have watched a more powerful Bromance Story before as in this show.
Kim Woo Bin and Lee Jong Suk - HIGH 5. Cracklier than so many many many romance films!!
I don't think I have ever so dearly wanted two buddies get on and hug each other ever before in any show.
Honest to goodness ... and I am a movie addict who has lived long enough to have a watched movie list that could be published as a 1 inch thick hard cover book.

This was not just a superb coming of age drama but also a stellar ensemble cast that delivered briiantly in script - actor - direction.

The deleting of any possible "love angle" raised it several pegs higher than of so so many high school shows the world over.

So happy to see that it makes Number 1 on the list
