Welcome to the new Dramabeans!

You may notice that things look a little different around here. We’ve been working really hard to bring you a cleaner, more responsive, more interactive experience, and are very excited to welcome you to the new Dramabeans!

Don’t worry—it’s still really the old Dramabeans, and all of our content is still here… somewhere… maybe in a new corner of the site. We know that we’ve gone into your living room and rearranged all of your furniture while you were out, so we’re here to guide you and tell you where we put all your stuff. We even got your some spiffy new stuff to go with it!

User accounts. You are now able to claim your usernames for good by registering with the site. If you are a longtime user, sign up with the email associated with your comments; we’re doing our best to link your old history to your new account. With your account, you can now create a profile and post things on your fan wall, and also track all the comments you’ve made. (You can still comment without creating a user account, although you won’t get to use any of the account features below.)

Upvoting/Downvoting. The thumbs are back! Comments can now be given thumbs-ups and thumbs-downs, but only to registered users. Thumbs are super fun, so you should totally register.

Featured Beanies. The “Beanies” tab in the header will take you to a page that highlights you guys and your comments. Be an active Beanie and be featured here!

Following. Users can follow each other, reply on each other’s fan walls, and get notifications when your friends post content. You can also follow shows by going to a recap and clicking the “Favorite” button.

Beanie Levels. Every comment upvote you’re given, every user you follow (or are followed by), and every fan wall post you make accumulates points for your account! What is this good for? Not anything useful, but we have implemented point levels, which will change your Beanie status as you accumulate more points. In your profile page, you’ll see that your Beanie level starts off as “Candy” (because everybody starts out as a Candy in dramaland!). We plan to also display the point totals so you can actually see how many you have (this feature is coming soon!), as you work your way up to water maid, noble idiot, and contract girlfriend, among many others. We also plan to add comment counts to the point totals.

Notifications. Your account will notify you when someone follows you, when someone comments on your posts (on your fan wall), when someone likes your post, and when a show you’re following adds a new post (say, posts a new recap). We’re adding email notification capability very soon!

Recaps, News, and Extras. We’ve grouped everything into three overarching categories, as you can see from the front page. “Recaps” includes not only drama recaps but also drama reviews (say, year end reviews), What We’re Watching posts, Spill the Beans, and movie reviews. “News” encompasses all news (drama, movie, variety, celebrity). And “Extras” is where you’ll find Podcasts, Open Threads, Beans of Wisdom, Announcement and meta posts, and anything that’s not a recap, review, or news post.

Blog View. If you don’t like this division of categories and yearn for the olden days when everything was in nice reverse chronological order, don’t worry, we’ve taken care of you. The “Switch to Blog View” button in the header will take you to a simple page that displays all posts.

Glitches. We’ve tested the site extensively and prepared as best we could, but we know there will inevitably be some glitches as we all settle into the new site. If you encounter any, shoot us an email at hello@dramabeans.com. Screenshots are super helpful, as well as information about what device/platform you are using.

Thanks for all your patience and understanding—we’re beyond excited to present our new site to you, and hope you like it! We promise to work out the remaining kinks as quickly as we’re able. In the meantime, go forth and explore, Beanies!

Neither can I. It is reportedly lower right in a person's banner page, perhaps similar to the "Favorite" button on a show's banner, but I never see it. There is something glitchy about either some account setups or some software/browser setups. FWIW, I'm Chrome on Windows 10 and my account went thru some convulsions because my original user name had illegal characters. HELP !

I can follow people who follow me first, because the follow notification shows a follow button, and I can set that one. Also, I can see the follow button on the featured beanies page. But those are the only ways I can follow. FWIW, I think I do know how to follow other people, it's just that the follow button on a user's page does not appear on my screen.

Does anybody know if display tricks like strikethru and blockquote work with the new site???

I was pleased to discover that italic worked fine. But the absence of line breaks and paragraph breaks is distressing. (My long posts now look like they've gone through the Bas-O-Matic. -- Well, not quite that bad, but my painstaking formatting has been lost. Boo hoo.) I suspect that blockquote could be very messy, if it functions at all. -- I miss the numbering of all comments. It was unwieldy at times, but did enable specific references to posts. And it spelled out their context. -- I'm hoping that the old usability features return as the code is fine-tuned. *cues up Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive"*

How do you find other beanies? I'm looking for my friend's account so I can follow her...

On a side note, this new site looks amazing and why did you have to roll it out during my finals?! How am I to study when there is so much fun to be had?

New user here. I am really liking this change of layout! I wasn’t much of a frequent commenter before, albeit an avid reader. I find the added ability to trace your comments a wonderful addition, though. Furthermore, the updated recap list is what probably excited me the most about this whole revamp. The drop-down menu is such an upgrade from what it used to be. It looks a lot more organized. The individual pages for the shows look a lot better too, though not much but the addition of a banner has changed. I am also definitely going to make use of the ’blog view’, it is nice that such an option has been included! Some things I don’t particularly like, namely the font type and size. I find it harder to read than the font previously used. The font size is a bit big which makes the page as a whole a bit much to take in. The latter is an issue easily fixed though; I can simply zoom out a bit. Perhaps other users might benefit from the larger font size.

Speaking as a lady of a certain age, the larger type size is indeed a godsend. -- The fonts on DramaBeans are Merriweather and Open Sans [serif]. -- My own personal favorite typefaces are the gorgeous open source Unicode fonts Charis SIL and Gentium, also from SIL. They were both designed with ease of legibility in mind, and are pleasing to my eye. I've used them as print fonts. I don't know how they technically stack up as screen/web fonts, but they sure look good on my monitor. ;-)

I noticed when tagging my favorite shows that the original version of SOMETHING ABOUT 1% has been dropped from the list. I watched that version because of Gang Dong-won, and just last night realized while watching PINOCCHIO that the grandpa in that show had also played the romantically-scheming grandpa in the original SOMETHING ABOUT 1%. -- I've noticed a bunch of other vintage (and more recent) shows are also missing, presumably because they were not recapped at DramaBeans: LOVE LETTER; KINGDOM OF THE WINDS; THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG; PAINTER OF THE WIND; BALLAD OF THE PRINCE; GREAT AMBITION / DAE MANG; HWAJUNG / SPLENDID POLITICS; FIVE CHILDREN, ILJIMAE, STRIKE LOVE, THANK YOU, HERO, CAN YOU HEAR MY HEART?, among others. -- It would be cool to be able to track films as well as dramas.

I love the site...but what I love more is that when I registered, I saw the very first comment that I posted way back 2008!

I remember I found dramabeans when I was looking for information about Dal Ja's Spring in 2007. I feel so old...

I don't comment a lot but I read most of what other beanies posts and I love this community.

Javabeans, girlfriday and the rest of the crew.... THANK YOU and keep up the good work!!!

Dear all
congratulations on the results of your hard work.
I have joined since 2009 /2010, but due to the English language and my grammar are very bad so I just read in silence ( every day , all the time)
On this special day I would like to say congratulations and thank you for the effort for making our life happy.

I'm guilty for not knowing about this changes but then again I haven't been watching kdramas lately... I'm happy to see db upgrading its look but I'm most certainly happy about getting an ID of my own here. About time! Though I'm still wondering if I'll ever remember the email I have been using before to retrieve my old comments.

Congrats DB! Its been a long time since I've discovered awesomeness of this website and the changes that happened through the years will only make my respect and admiration stronger for everyone who make DB the best go-to place for every Kdrama lover. You guys don't know how much impact you make to every drama I watch whenever I read your recaps. You bring Kdrama watching to a whole new level, satisfaction guaranteed! God bless everyone!

What worked for me was to change the zoom setting on my computer. I usually have my zoom setting at either 110% or 125%. By lowering it to 100%, suddenly the "SWITCH TO BLOG VIEW" thing was visible. It's not really a button, just the words. And it's just to the left of the magnifying glass up at the top of the page. Hope you find it! However, I'm already used to the new layout.

I see the ads are back, and while I know you need to make money somehow, they ruin the dramabeans experience on my iPad, spontaneously taking over the web page to offer me a walmart coupon and disabling the back button, so the only way out is going to a new tab.

Hey, we're sorry about this... the ads aren't supposed to do that. If you can send a screenshot of the rogue ad to hello@dramabeans.com the next time it happens, we'll forward it to the person in charge of ads so they can remove it from the rotation. Thanks for reporting this!
