Welcome to the new Dramabeans!

You may notice that things look a little different around here. We’ve been working really hard to bring you a cleaner, more responsive, more interactive experience, and are very excited to welcome you to the new Dramabeans!

Don’t worry—it’s still really the old Dramabeans, and all of our content is still here… somewhere… maybe in a new corner of the site. We know that we’ve gone into your living room and rearranged all of your furniture while you were out, so we’re here to guide you and tell you where we put all your stuff. We even got your some spiffy new stuff to go with it!

User accounts. You are now able to claim your usernames for good by registering with the site. If you are a longtime user, sign up with the email associated with your comments; we’re doing our best to link your old history to your new account. With your account, you can now create a profile and post things on your fan wall, and also track all the comments you’ve made. (You can still comment without creating a user account, although you won’t get to use any of the account features below.)

Upvoting/Downvoting. The thumbs are back! Comments can now be given thumbs-ups and thumbs-downs, but only to registered users. Thumbs are super fun, so you should totally register.

Featured Beanies. The “Beanies” tab in the header will take you to a page that highlights you guys and your comments. Be an active Beanie and be featured here!

Following. Users can follow each other, reply on each other’s fan walls, and get notifications when your friends post content. You can also follow shows by going to a recap and clicking the “Favorite” button.

Beanie Levels. Every comment upvote you’re given, every user you follow (or are followed by), and every fan wall post you make accumulates points for your account! What is this good for? Not anything useful, but we have implemented point levels, which will change your Beanie status as you accumulate more points. In your profile page, you’ll see that your Beanie level starts off as “Candy” (because everybody starts out as a Candy in dramaland!). We plan to also display the point totals so you can actually see how many you have (this feature is coming soon!), as you work your way up to water maid, noble idiot, and contract girlfriend, among many others. We also plan to add comment counts to the point totals.

Notifications. Your account will notify you when someone follows you, when someone comments on your posts (on your fan wall), when someone likes your post, and when a show you’re following adds a new post (say, posts a new recap). We’re adding email notification capability very soon!

Recaps, News, and Extras. We’ve grouped everything into three overarching categories, as you can see from the front page. “Recaps” includes not only drama recaps but also drama reviews (say, year end reviews), What We’re Watching posts, Spill the Beans, and movie reviews. “News” encompasses all news (drama, movie, variety, celebrity). And “Extras” is where you’ll find Podcasts, Open Threads, Beans of Wisdom, Announcement and meta posts, and anything that’s not a recap, review, or news post.

Blog View. If you don’t like this division of categories and yearn for the olden days when everything was in nice reverse chronological order, don’t worry, we’ve taken care of you. The “Switch to Blog View” button in the header will take you to a simple page that displays all posts.

Glitches. We’ve tested the site extensively and prepared as best we could, but we know there will inevitably be some glitches as we all settle into the new site. If you encounter any, shoot us an email at hello@dramabeans.com. Screenshots are super helpful, as well as information about what device/platform you are using.

Thanks for all your patience and understanding—we’re beyond excited to present our new site to you, and hope you like it! We promise to work out the remaining kinks as quickly as we’re able. In the meantime, go forth and explore, Beanies!

I am too busy coo- ing at Girl Friday's profile. Is that PHS I see? I am going to see what happens when I post. It won't allow me to use my name ck1Oz to register on this forum. Is it the capitalised O? The alphabet O not zero.

Glad to see you here, and hope the DB Team can find a way for you to keep your handle. Yes, it's the uppercase O that's preventing your registration. I want bonkers trying to register with two uppercase Ps -- to make it easier to parse my name.

Guys I love you guys and I've been reading recaps on this site for years now but this new site is not clear at all from a UX or layout point of view.
I miss seeing the first few lines for the recaps before you clicked to read more. Also it throws me off that the NEWS section is much bigger and central compared to the recap and features section. The featured section almost feels redundant- as does the extras at the very end. It would be great if you could incorporate the distinction of most commented with a label perhaps on the main photos of each post instead of making a whole other section?
The photo heading on the top of every article page also seems like an unnecessary addition as it's literally the same photo underneath. That being said, if it's there for the purpose of displaying the favourites button and average user rating, could that be moved to where the central photo is? The column on the right with all the most recent post is almost too big for the eye. It pushes the article far left and makes it feel tight. I almost miss the previous site for it's simplicity and balance.

I'm not trashing your new move in anyway but just wanted to voice some user and design concerns as an avid user of the site! Congrats on the move towards bigger and better things!

Dramabeans keep up the good work! The new look clean, bright and refreshing! I love the site's content the recaps and all the pop cultural pieces. Your site has helped me understand kdramas and the recaps are well written and thoughtful. This is my favorite site for all my kdrama recap needs. : )

Hello everyone! First post on the "new" site. Loving the change although sometimes I still get confused where I am when I open dramabeans and forget that the layout has changed, LOL. Happy that the thumbs up buttons are here to stay. Good job, girls! *clicks like button*

Been a lurker of DB for quite sometime now - I love the whole site and all the beans I get to feed my inner Korean soul (lol) and I was so happy and giddy when I saw the new site and the new features it made me sign up after almost a decade of not signing up for a forum of some sort! ? For the goal you've set: "cleaner, more responsive, more interactive experience", you sure nailed it! Thank you so much!! So excited to explore this new site some more!! ?

Haha! Us photosensitive people unfortunately have to squint every time we see too much white. The site is too young to request for a night mode, hehe, but hopefully it will be one feature to consider in the future @javabeans? ^_^

I have the same issue with glare, and would love to be able to tint the background color a light warm yellow (like candle light). Stark white kills my peepers. -- @cindymahri77: You might want to check out a nifty application called f.lux, which continuously adjusts your display's blue light output in keeping with your latitude, season, and time of day to minimize circadian disruption. Very cool, and free of charge. My physical therapist told me about it. One downside occurs when viewing noir Kdramas with dark, shadowy scenes. I temporarily disable f.lux to lighten the gloom so I can see the details that were swallowed up in shadows. I really needed to do that while watching VOICE. ;-)

I used the app Twilight on my Android phone. But now that I'm using iOS, I've still to look for a light-dimming app. I wonder if that's good with iOS?

@cindymahri77: Alas, it appears that f.lux runs only on Windows and Mac OS at this time. But maybe some of the info here will be helpful:
https://justgetflux.com/faq.html -- I sure hope so.

Hi! I have been wondering around here for about 3-4 years but i haven't dropped a single comment yet.
This new layout of website really does make me to type comment here hehe ^^.
The new logo is cute, and overall it looks fresher than before.
It has been my habit to read the recap on this website after watching an episode of kdrama, because sometimes I miss certain detail/point of the story, and it does help me understand the drama better ^^ (in addition, I read the comment section too! There are so many clever, cute, unique beanies around here)
Nice to meet all of you (javabeans, girlfriday, lollypip, murasakimi, heads2no, tinybeanie, etc (sorry i don't remember all of you ><) and all of the beanies)
Keep up the good work ladies!

PS: would you like to try recapping j-drama? There are lot of attractive doramas out there ^^

I was very surprised to see that after being a silent reader since 2009 and only starting to comment last January 2016 - that within just 1 year and a quarter, I made 182 comments!!! Didn't realize it was that many!!! O_o It was fun going through them..lol

I hate the new Soompi layout, it officially turned me off from the website (which sucks cause it was my most favorite site for kpop news). Thankfully new DB isn't completely overboard…I think you may just need some new time to get used to it.

I love it! The only thing, though, is that RATINGS page that had ALL the shows on one page. That was super useful. It was like a life guide and now it's difficult to scroll 40+ pages. I really wish you'd bring that back to one single page. Thanks for all the hard work though. You guys are the best <3

I'll second that. It made it much easier to browse, which was why I visited it so often. For me it served as a handy overview of shows. When one caught my fancy, I could then read recaps to decide whether to take the plunge, or just jump in feet first. ;-)

Whoa.. two days without dramabeans and I was surprised to see the new layouts. And where can I find the Ratings page? You know, where girlfriday and javabeans give rates on their watched shows. I'm using mobile phone and couldn't find it anywhere.. It must be somewhere right? Help?

Yes, the one-long-page was pretty quick and convenient. But I'm afraid it would eventually get TOO long after a few more years. How about separate pages by the first letter of the title?

About the "SWITCH TO BLOG VIEW SEARCH". I wasn't able to see it on my screen. By simply un-zooming the page a couple of degrees, it suddenly appeared. It's up there to the left of the magnifying glass. I usually keep my screen zoomed at 110 or 125. But when I zoomed it down to 100, it suddenly appeared. Now I can switch between the new layout & the blog layout until I get used to the changes around here. :)

The "Switch to Blog View" button is at the top of this page to the right of the ABOUT link. Don't feel bad. I'm having a hard time finding stuff, too. I eventually found the "Favorite" button for dramas in the lower right corner of the screen shot header for each show's recaps. -- I feel like I'm looking for Waldo. ;-)

About email notification. Please make it optional and opt-in. I don't want to be inundated with a zillion emails. I'm here practically every day, and receiving notifications while I'm logged in to DB works fine for me. I realize that may not be the case for other Beanies. Thanks for all your hard work to improve my home on the Web. ;-)

Great new layout!

I just registered but I was wondering what's the use of the display name? Because NGL I thought that the username, which has some requirements (ie at least 5 digits) and can't be changed was the name you use to login and the display name was the name that gets displayed when you comment: it doesn't appear so tho. What am I missing?

Also? IDK if this is a glitch on my end or what, but when you write comments that happen to have line-breaks, line-breaks don't actually "appear" on the comment itself. That? doesn't improve readability imho.

Anyway, I find the new layout much more "clean" and easy on the eyes. Great job, you guys! ♥
