Kim Woo-bin diagnosed with cancer, halts all activities to receive treatment

Whoa, this is a shocker: Kim Woo-bin (Uncontrollably Fond and Heirs) has been diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer and is stopping all work immediately to focus on treatment. His management company, Sidus HQ, released a statement today announcing the news, explaining that Kim Woo-bin had recently begun to feel strange symptoms in his body and went to the hospital, which is where he received his cancer diagnosis.

The condition affects the head and neck, and is located behind the nose and throat in the region called the nasopharynx. The statement explained that the condition had been caught early enough for treatment, and Kim is currently undergoing radiation therapy and taking medication. All of his currently scheduled activities are being put on hold and will be rescheduled. Surgery doesn’t appear to be in the immediate plans; this type of cancer is reportedly difficult to operate on, because of the location of the nasopharynx.

Kim had signed on to join director Choi Dong-hoon’s (The Thieves, Assassination) latest film, Wiretap, a remake of the Hong Kong crime thriller Overheard that co-stars Lee Jung-jae. Wiretap was to begin filming later this summer, but in light of this news, production will be delayed. A source from the film’s production stated that Kim Woo-bin’s health and treatment is the priority, and that they have agreed to wait to film until he has fully recovered.

Waaaah! What terrible news! It does sound as though it’s a treatable condition, and the reports have an upbeat tone to them, so I will remain positive-thinking and beam him all of my well wishes, and never watch Uncontrollably Fond again (well, for other reasons too). Let’s send him all our positive thoughts.

What's with the sad news all around this whole week :(((

I'm so hoping for a full recovery, no matter if he gets back in the show business or not. Just, get well, please. And quit smoking, I guess.

@nanabot
They are the first ever East Asian group to win a Billboard Award (not Asian Billboard Award, not American Billboard Award, it's THE Billboard Award that welcomes and should be honouring to nominees from around the world) but have been getting a lot of negative feedback from netizens and just plain mean people from around the world for their win T.T There have been comments that ranged from being simply unsupportive to plain mean, and then those comments that crossed lines and go into malicious and racist territory T.T And that's not even including the comments made by the different fandoms that are now attacking each other trying to claim claim credit and "give credit where it's due" as to who it really was who put in all those votes in order for BTS to win the Award

0

Yeah, non-drama related. It's the happenings around the world (esp. in my country - terrorism and all) that just beats the sense out of me.

Yep, he can recover and he will, I can't go through what I went through last year when the "the news on 'Uncontrollably Fond'" revealed to the public what we saw from episode 1. If you weren't prepared for what was to come you stopped watching after the hospital scene with the fake blood from his drama within a drama.

And then of course he is my third fav actor after Yoo Ah In, number 1, and yep Ji Soo, number 2. And all the health diagnosis lately, please drama land happy endings in dramas only from now on and drama universe happy endings in real life too!!!

Nasopharyngeal cancer is basically cancer that affects the area behind nose (nasal) at the upper throat (medical term is called pharynx) hence the name NasoPharyngeal Cancer or NPC for short. (I think Lessa refers to it as NPCA because the medical term for cancer is carcinoma?)

Fully agree with both her and ck1Oz that its one of the not so good cancers to get. (not that any cancer is good, but some are worse than others.)

Because of its location, it an area that is close to important structures like the base of the skull, brain (and pituitary) and eyes. Hence both radiotherapy and surgery can be complicated by injury to the surrounding structures. Essentially lots of important things are nearby. Also, NPC can recur, and then require major surgery that can be very disfiguring. Essentially, not a good condition to have.

But hopefully its really early, and the radiotherapy can catch all the tumour cells and he won't have side effects or complications and it won't come back again. Let's all pray!

radiation therapy patient here!
I must agree that getting cancer in the head/throat area is awful...he's gonna be really uncomfortable with treatment. Just receiving treatment overall is an intimidating experience, especially since he's probably wearing a mask to keep him in place and moorings in his wrists to keep his shoulders down...it also makes me cringe just remembering the difficulty swallowing, the awful taste of food, dry mouth, and now, months later, the frustration of not being able to taste almost anything.
I actually don't really follow his career and I'm not his biggest fan, but man, did this news hit me. Hopefully, he won't receive too many rounds and the cancer is stopped soon. Hoping he gets out of this a stronger person!

I restart treatment in a couple of weeks, but in a different location so I'm not too upset about it. Besides, it's the last sprint!

2

@beanfan sorry to hear about your grandpa, it really is an uncomfortable place. I'm on my way to recovery, thank you :) I have a residue and that's why I'm restarting treatment, but I'm positive it'll be the last stretch!
@michykdrama aw, thank you so much! this warms my heart. I actually stopped watching dramas/coming to DB last year cause I was too dizzy, but now that I'm just waiting to restart treatment I find it to be such a nice distraction. Especially with this new dynamic and whatnot.
I am positive, yes! The residue is below my clavicle and near my armpit so it's way, way better than last time ^^
Again, thank you both for your warm words and wishes! <3<3

The prognosis also depends on the cancer cell type.
But cancer in nasopharynx region is more dangerous compared to some cancers such as Breast and thyroid .

The only silver lining on this one is that Southeast Asia has a higher occurrence rate of NPC so they're hopefully on high alert to detect and treat it. It's never good to get a "rare" cancer, especially a difficult-to-treat one, but better to be diagnosed in an area where they're looking for it.

Still, worrying news all-round.

4

Required fields are marked *

I don't know what you are talking about. Korea is nowhere near Southeast Asia

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Korea is nowhere near in Southeast Asia, but NPC is most common in Asians and Pacific Islanders, so there is comparatively more expertise in the region on it than, say, in the West.

2

Sigh. Korea is not IN Southeast Asia. But it is a hell of a lot closer to it than most of the rest of the globe. If a disease is likely to crop up next door (in a global sense) then doctors are more likely to look for it, purely based on exposure to immigrant and healthcare communities.

It's like plague in the US - it's known to crop up in the southwest (prairie dog vectors or something), so even though it's very rare docs are on high alert for the signs. Less so in the northeast.

0

Yes, the example you gave is exactly why i'm stumped when you mentioned Southeast Asia out of the blue (As opposed to Northeast Asia or somewhere that is actually close to SK). The distance between Phoenix-Boston and Seoul-Bangkok are almost identical. So it's like saying doctors in Boston will be on high alert for symptoms of the plague because it is something that occurs rarely in Phoenix 3700km away.

But jam's explanation makes sense, if we are talking broadly in terms of genetics of the people in this part of the world.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I mentioned Southeast Asia because it's got the highest incidence of NPC. That's all.

All in all, I think we're arguing about a concept of scale. You think "regionally" when applied in a hemispheric way is too broad; I think it's more likely a doctor in SK would've arrived faster at this diagnosis based on regional exposure than if they were in Europe, South America or North America, simply because NPC wouldn't be as high on the list of likely diagnoses in those places. SK isn't near to Southeast Asia compared to Japan, but it is compared to Brazil. The plague example is somewhat similar - plague is VANISHINGLY rare, so the halo of regional awareness would be to that scale - I'm talking contiguous states, not Boston. NPC is not as rare as plague and covers a wider area, so bigger regional halo. I'm not sure why scale has turned into such a flashpoint in this discussion?

Also, the genetics piece is curious because there's a fair amount of evidence out there that there's some odd non-genetic possibilities here, like risk increasing in populations where salted preserved foods make up a large portion of diet. Apparently NPC rates drop in Asians who move to the US, and they rise in Caucasians who move to China. That's interesting.

0

Gosh. I didn't realise you guys went out on a tangent about NPC and where it is more common. Actually it's classically known to be most common in South China and Hong Kong; and has even been coined as a "Cantonese disease". Of course it's also found elsewhere but it isn't classically a South East Asian disease. I didn't correct @Miranda at the start because I didn't think it was important since this isn't a medical website but since it's become a topic of discussion I shall just clarify.
It also doesn't negate the points raised by Miranda though as certainly a disease that is more prevelant in the region would be more likely to be diagnosed earlier than one that is rare.

He can and he will.

He is a really good actor I am sure he must have been screened last year 2016 and before filming UF in 2015 for basic health check ups and he got a clean bill of health. So that must mean they got it in stage 1 and he probably only started showing symptoms recently that made him and those that love him go for these specific tests for NPC etc.

So that is important his friends and family love him and he will make it and of course he has us - we had his back and we read his letter about UF's expectations and what fans wanted. And we don't care about what happened in UFs ratings because we cried every episode because Kim Woo Bin gave us that emotion and for that we look forward to all his future dramas and films.

From what I read somewhere else, this form of cancer is not seen as much in North America but is more common in men under 55 in South East China and other areas. It's also more common in people who have high salted fish and salter meats in their diets. Therefore, it could be genetic or lifestyle. Whatever the case, it's a life changer. I'm a young cancer survivor myself. I'm wishing for him to have the best possible healthy outcome.
