Original cast confirms for Age of Youth Season 2, adds Kim Min-seok

The coming-of-age female-centric drama Age of Youth was a sleeper hit for JTBC in 2016, and was confirmed for a second season earlier this year. The drama told the going-ons of an eclectic group of college-age roommates who lived together in a share house, experienced personality clashes, and bonded together as friends. Recent news revealed that one of the main cast members, Ryu Hwa-young (Father Is Strange), would only be appearing in the second season as a special guest, but it looks like the rest of the original roommates will be returning. In addition, Kim Min-seok (Defendant) has been added to cast.

In addition to Ryu Hwa-young, the original cast consisted of Han Ye-ri as the serious eldest housemate; Park Eun-bin as the bubbly, boy-crazed member who was the social glue of the household; Han Seung-yeon as a naive girlfriend who dated the worst guy ever; and Park Hye-soo as the wide-eyed freshman. After receiving accolades for their performances in Age of Youth, Park Eun-bin and Park Hye-soo went on to leading roles Father, I’ll Take Care of You and Introverted Boss, respectively. Han Ye-ri has continued to be an active member of the film industry, and has since appeared in two contemplative movies, The Worst Day and A Quiet Dream.

Kim Min-seok has been offered the role of one of the main male leads, who will be romancing a new female heroine who will be replacing Ryu Hwa-young. His character’s name is Seo Jang-hoon, which is also the name of a famous former basketball star, and perhaps to differentiate himself from his celebrity name-twin, he acts the complete opposite way.

I think Kim Min-seok is a brilliant choice to add to the original cast because he’s rookie enough that he’ll fit in terms of experience level with the rest of the girls, who were also relatively unknown newbies before the first season, but he also is on the rise as a youthful trending star for his supporting roles in huge hits like Descended From the Sun and Doctors. His vibe reminds me of the bright-eyed Yoo Ah-in from Antique Bakery, so I think it would also mesh with the overall tone of the drama.

Age of Youth Season 2 is still in the works at JTBC, but they’re looking at a late summer broadcast.

I'm happy about Kim Minseok and definitely agree with @tineybeanie about him being a good fit with the rest of the cast members' experience.

Also, I just came from watching a Seo Janghoon Knowing Bros compilation video, so for a second there I thought I was seeing things :)

Aw, for a second, I thought Hwa-young was staying, too! So I wonder who the new roomie's gonna be.

I read Kim Min-seok's name like five times because I kept wondering why that name sounded so familiar, but I couldn't envision an actress' face in my mind. I gave up and peeked at the bottom of the post and whaddya know, it's him! Haha.

I thought she was back in full time too. I wish the controversy hadn't affected her ability to be in this series. Her role was so interesting and I so wanted more from the character. Ah well...at least we get her briefly.

Kim Min-seok is so little and cute. I first noticed him in Shut Up Flower Boy Band. He is steadily working on building up his resume. Hopefully he will get a sweet love line here. Excited!

I keep reading that but I'm removed from all these behind the scenes news so I don't know anything about it? What's with the scandal thing?
I just think it's a pitty. Her character was feisty :D

Ok, this all allegedly happened, I can't speak to the truth of any of it. Hwayoung was part of kpop group T-ara and was supposedly bullied by fellow members back in the day. Recently, Hwayoung spoke about her time in T-ara and it caused some staff/people around T-ara to step forward and make certain negative claims towards her. You can read in detail here: https://www.soompi.com/2017/02/08/former-t-ara-staff-member-cant-watch-hwayoung-play-victim-tells-bullying-scandal/

Yeah, she was my favorite out of all the girls. I loved her attitude--she was sassy and confident, but still had a lot of heart. I think I thought that the show's producers wouldn't let the scandals and controversies affect her return, so it sucks to think that if that didn't happen, she probably could've stayed with the rest of the gang. But like you said, at least we get her briefly. Better than nothing.

I think Min-seok is cute and good and I'm happy that he recently won a Baeksang(!), but I don't really have much to say about anything else about him since I've only seen him as an actor and not irl through interviews, bts, etc. Looking forward to seeing him romance the new girl, I guess. I have a feeling he'll be a delight here, based on his character description, which sounds so silly.

YES to this. Can't wait to see who they cast as the new girl! Time to dream cast...

Is there any word about whether the original extended cast will be returning? I don't think there's any need for Ji Il-joo. Though I enjoy him as an actor I think we can all agree we don't need his character back, lol.

But I'd love for Yoon Park, Son Seung-won (mooreeeee of him please), and Shin Hyun-soo to all return + our beloved Belle Epoque madame. It's too bad Dong-joo probably won't come back, unless Yoon Jong-hoon comes along for the cameo too.

Honestly, this is one case where I really don't care about the male leads - if it was a trade, I'd happily lose any of them (yes, even Dong-joo) to get all our female leads back in full-length roles.

Same. I don't need boys here (let's not tell Ji-won sunbae I said that). This is my feel-good, girl-power show consisting of different girls with various personalities and styles that have formed the sweetest friendships with each other and I'd like to see more of that from the OG from s1.

awwww so Kang unni still won't be a full-time resident of Belle Epoque?

Too bad about the controversy, I honestly find it ridiculous that she had her role reduced because of something that didn't even involve her conduct on an acting job and for which she already paid a price by getting no work for several years before she started acting. She was the most interesting of the girls imo, tied with Yoon sunbae. But I'll look forward to seeing what little we can of her in S2.

LOL you got dislike pogo!? initially I was sad with Hwayoung will not appear again but blessing in disguise, we will get another fresh story. When I watched for the first time I was so sure Kang was my fav character until I rewatched it again, it was Song that is a really refreshing character.

Maybe thanks to Father is Strange, I discovered HwaYoung still has along way to go in acting. She was good in Age of Youth probably it suits her character/close to her character in real life and thanks to writernim and PDnim too. Like @kiara always said, the writer is the most important part in this drama. I used to think highly of Hwayoung after Age of Youth, until I watched her in Father is Strange.

lol they can hit that thumbs down all they want, I don't care. This pound of flesh mentality that thinks Hwayoung must lose all work forever is a mentality fit for five year olds (I'm Indian and I've seen Bollywood stars keep working when they literally murdered someone, so excuse me if I think this is a tempest in a teapot)

I think Hwayoung's character Ra-young is certainly very annoying in Father is strange, but I feel like that's how she's written - she's a brat, immature and selfish and a bit bossy. I do like how the siblings in that drama are portrayed though - Ra-young's strong personality is a lot like lawyer unni Hye-young's, while Mi-young (Jung So-min) and Joon-young have milder personalities, but none of the siblings are exactly alike. And Hwayoung tends to carry scenes with her love interest, because that dude is wooden as hell and she does the work for two in all their scenes together, so I don't think it's just the AoY writer or PD who made her great. She's just playing things in weekend drama style.

It is exactly her character is annoying but I do think she still look green. She will get more exposure and improve in the future. I think the scandal started to slow down now, and imo it will be better if she stay under radar for a while if she wants to pursue her acting career. Well that's my opinion, and I think many fans love her and that guy stories. That guy surely looks handsome but so wooden. lol. He was also the same in Queen of The Rings, which I feel bad for Kim Seul Gi because this girl deserved better partner.

YESSSS so excited for this one! :D
I'm not sure of all that's happened with the actress Ryu Hwa-young behind the scenes but i'm sorry that her character is not joining the next season full time. I felt that her character was interesting and diferent from the female leads that we are used to see in dramas, so I feel her absence a little.

I think it's good news in general, better to have a positive image with the drama than associate it with the controversy Hwa-Young was in. Really looking forward to season 2, it's so rare to see so many of the original cast come back. Hoping it will be more of a hit this time!

True. If Hwayoung still in Season 2, ppl will always talk about her scandals and it will be disturbing in my opinion. I cannot blame T-ara fans totally, the way she handled it also not very professionally. It is good she is doing long weekend drama right now that not so many ppl are watching, she needs to stay under radar for a while. I liked her enough in Season 1, but I also dont want the whole team got affected as well.

Kim Min Suk really has struck gold these days. I remembered googling the cast of Shut Up Flower Boy Band three years ago and wondering why the only cast whose careers really took off after the drama ended were L and Sung Joon. But it looks like he struck gold after Descendants of the Sun, because he's been involved in high profile hit dramas since then, just won an award and the public loves him. Hope he can attain higher heights before he leaves for the army. He's not your typical leading man with great height and model like looks, but I find him appealing all the same and I'm glad for his good fortune.

I am glad 2016 was indeed a good year for him and 2017 started great for him too. He was good in DOTS, scene stealer in Doctor, and he was really good in Defendant. It will be good if he will do movies too.

I read that there will be 2 new roomates. If it is true, I will be happier! And make it 16 epi writernim. ? Is it too late to ask for Kim Seul Gi to join the Belle Epoque girls? Since she is currently busy with Lookout. Others - Baek Jin Hee and Kim So Eun are free at the moment.? They were originally girls in my mind before they announced the casts for Season 1? And please no idol. ?

I am sooo looking forward to this drama!

Guess it was too much to hope for a queer Belle Epoque roommate (unless Kang unni's harassment has awoken something in Yeeun), it is a cable drama after all. I'll keep waiting..

Hopefully our new girl will be just as engaging as Kang Yina was. Bringing Hwayoung back would be a distraction for me at the moment, but I did love her character and I'll miss her a lot.

Kim Min-Seok is a rising star. I first noticed him while watching Defendant. His is a support role, but sincerely I couldn't take my eyes off him. He did brilliant and was convincing. He has expressive, somewhat sad eyes. I ws SO happy when I learned that he got a new actor award at this year's Baeksang. Hope he shine even more in the future projects he joined in.
