Drama viewership ratings for the week of Aug. 28-Sept. 3, 2017

We had a few new premieres this week, starting with Hospital Ship, which took over the slot previously occupied by Man Who Dies to Live. And it’s so far pulling in about the same numbers, although they fluctuate from half-episode to half-episode. The hype did seem to wear off a bit on its second day, since it dropped from a high of 12.4% to 10.7%, but those numbers aren’t anything to sniff at. The real test will be if it can sustain viewers going into next week, but for a blockbuster drama, it’s not necessarily pulling in blockbuster numbers right out of the starting gate.

While Falsify has been doing pretty well for itself, maybe the recent union worker strike has helped to make the show even more relevant than before, what with the strike being all about journalistic integrity and freedom. That hasn’t seemed to impact its numbers, since it’s pulling in about the same 11.6% each week, but who knows how it’ll be when the strike goes into full effect.

I had a feeling that Manhole’s numbers would drop even lower because people aren’t going to suddenly start tuning in at this point, but color me surprised that it dropped into territory I haven’t seen for a Big 3 broadcaster in what feels like forever: the dreaded 1%. Its even-numbered episode managed an absolutely abysmal 1.4%, and were we in any other climate, the show would probably be on the chopping block. But it’s probably just cheaper at this point to run the rest of the show than it is to try and scramble to find programming or rush Mad Dog, the show slated to air after Manhole ends.

And while Age of Youth 2 will probably be a cult hit like its predecessor and numbers don’t really matter, we had two big weekend premieres: My Golden Life, which took over the winning slot left behind by Father Is Strange and earned winning starting numbers at 19.7%, and Man Who Sets the Table, which took over once You’re Too Much ended and earned a much less stellar 8.6%. It’s only with weekend dramas that I think people are more attached to the slot than they are the drama airing in it, or maybe it’s just faith that the same network will continue to put out likable content in a likable slot.

Does it mean Manhole is the floppiest drama of any 3 big broadcasters this year?

Is there any drama rated below 1% in SBS, KBS or MBC so far this year?

Based on what I read before, Manhole is already in top 5 drama with lowest rating from year 2000 and the lowest of this year between the 3 main broadcasters.

Hi Thanks sera. Can you direct me where do you get information of "Manhole being the top 5 drama with lowest rating"?

I have been curious since the rating was too much low.

I read the article in Naver, but it is not something official I believe but more on individual research based on existing data. I'll try to search for it.

Not only this year. It's the lowest-rated broadcast drama in a regular time slot SINCE 2000. The previous record holder was Noh Hee-kyung's Foolish Love (1.8%) on KBS2 but that drama went up against Heo Jun and not Manhole's lightweight competitors.

IKR. It's at times like these that I wonder what online viewing habits/ratings are like. You know how DramaFever usually releases their weekly viewership ranking. I always wandered the numbers behind that. Manhole's not on there anyways.

"Manhole" would be on records now as the lowest rated drama of all time.

"Foolish Love" just didn't even have a small chance against "Heo Jun's" insane 63.5% rating. Doctor Heo ( Jun Kwang-ryul) will remain as the highest rating sageuk of all time.

Poor Manhole. It was already hovering at the 2% mark. The huge drop in its ratings on Thursday was likely due to the World Cup match between Korea & Iran being played in Seoul at the same time during its time slot. That's also probably why all the Thursday night drama ratings dropped compared to Wednesday & last Thursday.

Yes, the Korean World Cup football home match was broadcast live on JTBC and "scored" 13.7% (AGB) & 16.5% (TNMS) ratings. This match also drew the largest number of spectators so far for matches played at the Seoul Stadium for the current World Cup.

Auch, Manhole ? 2% was already low
and now with 1.4%, I don't know what will happen. It's good that at least Srongest Deliveryman and KBS new weekend drama are doing well. Tbh maybe KBS should have put SD in Manhole's timeslot and the rating will reach something like Fight My Way.

I don't think people are watching less TV, I think they are watching less "over the air" TV. Read someplace about one show that over half the viewers were streamers.

4

Agree though most of the kdrama audience are on demand streamers. They should start sending their shows on Hulu and netflix aside from their local streaming app this way they have larger audience means the bigger the profit

0

It's quite true that the quality is pretty bad - talking from plot and acting. These days there are some advancement, and more creativity compared to drama in 2000s but there are parts that they are lacking- maybe lacks of the heart and touch..I don't know, sometimes it is quite hard to fully invested with characters although the plot sounds more logical compared to at least 5 years back.

I think TV ratings nowadays won't be able to get that high anymore. Plus, there are many options to watch drama aside from TV especially among young people. Getting not lower than 5% might be considered as decent, except for hyped drama.

I don't see where the quality is any worse. Just go back and look at some of the "also aired" shows of the time, and many were pretty awful - we only recall the better ones. Another thing that makes the ratings lower is that there are more shows now - there are what... 4 cable channels now?

I've been watching older dramas lately and for the most part, I don't find the quality much different from today: there are a few really great, memorable dramas, some good but ultimately forgettable dramas, and quite a few mediocre or outright bad ones. I'd say the same about the acting.

3

Required fields are marked *

True, we mostly recall good shows and there were bad shows back then too.
I guess it depends on how many old shows we are watching to make a comparison.

I do have "more" shows that I love from years back then what we have now. So I guess it's up to personal preference or maybe I was just born in the wrong era. I seems to agree with the critics back then.

Even if he wants to do drama, he should do non-romance drama ,or maybe he should do something else now.

2

well neighbourhood hero last year tanked with him as a lead

0

He still manage to come back and in a lead role proves that his agency is not going to give up.

0

His "manager/CEO" is smart & super influecing the showbiz, not many artist with big prostitution/girl scandal can make smooth comeback.

True @seralovestteobokki
Same sentiment with Lee Byun Hyun, he sticks with action/hollywood movie (dont know how Mr.Sunshine will turn out still).

If PSH does project without romance will be better for audience to digest him.

One think forshoo, they shudn't do any variety haha. Knetz will eat them alive.

1

It's only the first episode and I'm sure it will go up, but My Golden Life is the first in KBS2's weekend drama slot to get a rating lower than 20% in two years (compare to the lowest ratings of Five Kids, Laurel Tree Tailors and Father is Strange: 21.2%, 22.2%, 21.4%).

Is there any particular reason why the viewer ratings are so low for the weekdays' slots in these past few months? I don't live in South Korea so I'm just wondering. I think the last time we saw big numbers were around when Defendant was airing. Nobody reached 20 something after that if I'm not mistaken.

My 2 cents:

Mon-Tues dramas - I am watching School 2017 and The King Loves.

While I love these two shows especially School, I can see why their numbers are low. School genre(not the franchise) don't usually get high ratings. School 2013 would be an exception and that's probably what launched Lee Jong Seok and Kim Woo Bin's careers. In this one, almost the entire cast including the main teacher are rookies.

The King Loves is not the typical kind of saeguk Korean loves. It's supposed to be youth saeguk or something. Unlike Ruler which had beloved child actors, I guess Korean viewers don't have the same reaction towards the cast.

I almost wanted to start Falsify but never got round to it when I read the mixed reviews. It was unlike Defendant which started with a blast and hooked the viewers from word go. If it had, it might get better ratings.

I am watching nothing on Wed-Thurs slot although I did try Reunited Worlds and Criminal Minds.

I really liked Reunited Worlds in the beginning but it felt strangely off in subsequent weeks and I dropped it. I think the writing is the problem but mostly, it doesn't strike me as the type of drama which would hook Korean viewers.

There are worse shows than Criminal Minds but I think being Criminally Boring is what makes this mire in 2% ratings. I was hoping for a good crime drama from tvN but it's just a lot of violence, gore and dour face people.

I honestly don't know how Reunited World's ratings are still so high.

I just hope that the actors from School 2017 have great careers after the show is done...next week...?

If you're not watching anything in the Wed/Thur time slot, you should give Hospital Ship a try. I can't really recommend it more than the 4 eps. that aired, but yeah, check it out.

Is Reunited Worlds that bad now?

I have high hopes for Kim Jung Hyun and Jang Dong Yoon. For the later, he will probably be playing youngsters for a while. He looks more like 18 than 25. Kim Jung Hyun on the other hand can do more diverse roles because he is older, looks more mature and has the talent to boot. I really love Se Jeong too. The only reservation is whether she can pull off something different from her real personality. Then again, she's only 21 so as long as she is given the right roles, she'll be fine.

Seo Ji Hoon is another guy to look out for, he's definitely got the looks to be leading man. I'm quite intrigued by Han Joo Wan a.k.a Teacher Shim. Never seen him in anything but he's quite cute.

Han Joo-wan was among the best thing in Hwajung, he easily outshone Seo Kang-Joon and Lee Yeon-hee. He was also in Joseon Gunman, and I think I have watched few of his drama. But he is charming in School 2017. I'm looking forward to see his movie with Im Soo Jung. By the way, Han Joo-wan and Sun-hwa are no longer rookies, Sun-hwa already started her acting career few years ago alongside her idol activities. They are not popular actors yet, but I believe quite familiar faces as they did weekend drama before.

About Se-jeong hopefully her agency won't push her to be female lead very soon. I do like her acting in School, but I don't think she is a lead material yet. Otherwise, there's possibility for her to become like Park Hye-soo, who was pushed to lead Introverted Boss when she wasn't even ready.

1

"Is Reunited Worlds that bad now?"
I won't say it's really really really bad, but it's kinda bad and draggy. Progress is going really slow for this drama and the world that they're living in is like another world: unrealistic and too simplistic. I get that it's a fantasy drama, but like javabeans said, it feels like a 10-year-old kid is writing this kind of drama, and knowing that the writer is the same writer as Beautiful Gongshim and Rooftop Prince made me wonder what went wrong in her life that she writes this kind of drama.

Jang Dong Yoon really doesn't look like 25. He reminds me of Siwan because they both look younger than their age. I remember I couldn't take Siwan seriously in Triangle drama because he looked like a high school student rather than an heir to big casino.

I can't believe that Seo Ji Hoon is born in 1997. I'm sad that I can't call him oppa. But he does have matured feature which suits for him as a leading man.

2

@seralovestteobokki
Wow, I didn't know Han Joo Wan had a number of dramas under his belt already.

I can't agree more on Se Jeong. School 2017 is the type of dramas and those of youth genres where an idol actor can be the lead. Otherwise, they should be given secondary roles to hone their skills and prove themselves.

I've just finished ep 1 of AOY2. I miss Park Hye Soo more than I thought I would. She was so good in it but not that much in Introverted Boss. I hope the same thing won't happen to Se Jeong.

3

@hannahmustafa One of the reasons why I stop watching Reunited Worlds is because of Yeo Jin Goo. I loved him so much in Circle and I think he's a great actor. But I can't stomach his smiling face in RW. In the beginning, tt was a very pleasant change from his tragic role in Circle. However, it started to look really weird. Not just him though.

I happened to like Rooftop Prince and Beautiful Gongshim for their first halves but not the second. In RW, I stuck around even shorter.

Sometimes, beautiful and almost delicate looking men like Im Si Wan are limited in the roles they can play. Especially in movies. It's the 'rougher' looking guys like Kim Jung Hyun and Woo Do Hwan who can be more versatile.

2

@outofthisworld I just hope her decision not doing AOY was right. Park Hye-soo still needs to take baby step in her acting career and she still young. Still adjusting to new Eun-jae.

1

@outofthisworld I've watched AOY for 2 episodes and I can guarantee that you're gonna miss Park Hye Soo even more (T.T) the new Eun Jae is not that bad but the vibe is very different and I can't get around myself that they are the same person

0

@cicciomon I tried to underplay my inability to take to the new Eun Jae. I took to Park Hye Soo almost immediately in Season 1. At that time, she was just Yong Pal's little sis to me, I didn't have much impression of her acting. However, she's cute as a button. This actress doesn't have the same effect on me. I'm not saying anything about her acting, just a matter of how I like her. *Sigh*

0

I think people are burned out on that whole School thing by now. I know I am, never even bothered to try 2017.

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim's highest ratings was around 27%. I think medical and legal dramas haven't changed much and it appeals to the general viewers.

Sageuks and rom.coms lately are mostly geared towards young people.
It would be great if there were more rom.coms like "Kim Samsoon" or a sageuk with romance/politics like "Princess Man" etc.

Criminal Minds is getting even more boring, if that is even possible. Watching episode 11 was such a chore it took me almost 4 hours to finish it because I kept pausing and getting distracted (by logging onto Dramabeans, of course), and I just can't bring myself to hit play on episode 12. This would've been the biggest disappointment this year, both quality and ratings wise, considering the strength of the cast. Seriously, what happened?

I'm liking Strongest Deliveryman, mainly just Jin-gyu and Ji-yoon's scenes. Can they please headline their own spin-off drama? I'll happily watch the two bickering their way to love for 16 episodes. I'm not crazy about the rest of the show but it's still reasonably enjoyable. Has the ratings dropped a little compared to last week though? I hope it's not going to be a downward trend from now on. Go Kyung-pyo put in a decent performance, but I think ultimately the character Kang-soo pales in comparison with Yoo Jin-oh/Shin Yul from Chicago Typewriter that he embodied perfectly earlier this year.

I'm with you as I love the chaebols more than the main couple actually. I felt awkward with the main couple somehow and I don't even know why. I usually skip their scene

Go Kyung Pyo did an amazing job in Chicago because that role asked him to put all his acting ability to the front, while Strongest Deliveryman is more like a melo rom-com (is it still considered to be rom-com if I don't find the scene funny?) and an easier genre than Chicago

Mr. Heo Im - I wished for this show not breaking Stranger's ratings. Their is significant difference in quality of both shows.

Man Who Sets the Table - Hero's private parts. ouch. Low Production and seems like it gonna have lot of hijinks.

I wouldn't say no one cares about Save Me/Rescue Me. The ratings have been steadily climbing slowly/modestly each week and those numbers aren't too bad for a cable channel especially given the content/genre of the show. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually crack into the 4% area. Although it's not in the top 10 at DramaFever, it seems to be climbing there as well--it was at #13 last week. Some people on DB seem to like the show as well.

I don't think it has an issue with time-traveling plot, but maybe in the earlier epi (at least until the epi I watched), the story was kinda give you headache and a bit chaotic. But the rating was already too low from the beginning, so I guess it still has to do with casts. Neither Jaejoong nor Uee are rating magnets as well, and even though they are pretty well known, their fans might mostly watching the drama online.

Look at Live Up To Your Name. It is a time travel drama and it's ratings have been going up in a cable channel. It all comes down to the story and lack of chemistry. I agree with Sera that the story was chaotic and the lead characters are not exactly likeable. I hated it in the beginning and said I wouldn't watch it, but I like Jaejoong so I've stuck with it. But to be totally honest I have to force myself to watch it. As a matter of fact I haven't watched this week's Thursday episode and I don't think I will. Maybe I've reached my stopping point?

hahaha funnily I'm one of the people who said I'd drop it after episode 1 and I am still watching, on and off tho, like while I'm doing something else, or skip an odd episode and watch an even episode because nothing major really happens in between. the later episodes have calmed down a lot compared to the first 2 episodes. But's it's still hard to find any likeable qualities with any of the characters. At this point I just want to see how it ends. And I don't pity it one bit nor wished it had higher numbers because it totally deserves it's low numbers.

the drama is bad, the story is bad, the actors are bad. all is bad, that's the reason.

I am down to this 1 issue. In this drama, Jaejoong is super enthusiastic, where Uee is super walking dead.
I love them both sadly

This is just my opinion and I have only seen the first two episodes of manhole. But, maybe its jaejoong character's unemployment that is turning off the korean viewers. Because, so far I haven't seen that any adult slackers in kdramas, admittedly, i have been only watching kdramas for a year now. Even if they are unemployed housewives, they ll be doing a lot lot of housework.

Anyway, the only drama I am watching from the current cycle Is strongest deliveryman and age of youth2 (waiting for this week's episodes subs). Glad SD's numbers are not that bad because this week's episodes were really cute and fun.

Hi, sorry for the super late reply. Hopefully, you would have found it by now. Almost all the usual drama sites have them, like myasiantv, kissasian etc. Right now, all the four episodes are subbed.

Yeh. It's good entertainment. KNG is wildly entertaining in a role that combines silly and sexy.

KBS is pulling under 5% ratings from Monday to Thursday unlike their competitors. Currently just watching School from them and even I just read the first five recaps because the drama hadn't found its peace

Oh man....I'm not watching Manhole but I feel really bad for the cast and staff.

I'm really glad that Falsify and Live Up To Your Name are doing well though! The cast in both dramas are doing and incredible job! It's crazy how Falsify is basically occuring in real life though as the drama is airing. Hopefully they find justice not just in the drama but in real as well.

Not surprised at CM's dive. I have no idea what were they thinking giving their weakest link the spotlight at stronger cast members' expense. This isn't the time to change the show's structure. The people who left won't come back and it'll only turn off the people who've stuck with the show by relegating better liked characters to the background.

And this is the result, the show had settled on a pattern and they messed it up.

Really enjoyed the first two episodes of Man Who Sets the Table. Good mix of comedy, family drama, and pathos, and more in the real life vein than the high drama of birth secrets/hidden identity/etc than a lot of the other weekenders on right now (moment of silence for Father is Strange). It's a promising enough start that I could see it being like the weekend dramas I enjoy most, the ones about different couples and former enemies coming together to make one big raucous family (like Five Kids, What's With This Family). Hope they keep it up!

Manhole's Korean ratings may be low, but I read the series was sold to Japan for $133,000. Per episode, while Descendants of the Son sold for $90,000. Seems Japan loves JaeJoong no matter what and are very excited about his comeback drama.

Yes, I almost forget that JYJ is the King of Japan, their most hardcore strongest loyalist fans. It does make sense hope it will sell really well in Japan

@seralovestteobokki @yayabean

Sorry for my fussy acronym?
PSH = Park Shi Hoo (lead in Golden Life)
KHJ = Kim Hyun Joon (SS501)

He got caught in girl scandal as well right. Even is in different route. KHJ & PSH nailed this un-gentleman role sadly, in real life.

"Live up to our Name" episode 8 nailed it. This is what I was waiting for. Kim Nam-gil gave a powerful performance during the last scene.

I wait eagerly for next weekend for episodes 9 and 10.

Is it only me that think that the drama that has lower ranting is better than higher ranting? For example today I watch my golden life witch is 23.7% .(not really deserve it)
and I watch criminal minds witch it's a very good drama but it's ranting is 2.5% .
