[Vlog] Dramas we’re looking forward to in 2018

We vlogged about our favorite dramas of the year (here’s Part 1 and Part 2) and our least favorite—and now with 2017 very nearly behind us, it’s time for us to take a look at the dramas we’re looking forward in the new year!

There are a surprising number of shows we’ve got on the list, even if information is currently pretty sparse at the moment. Still, there are enough stars and writers and PDs attached to keep our attentions engaged and those drama titles on our watch lists, whether it’s a blockbuster historical romance (Mr. Sunshine), an adaptation of an acclaimed movie (Beauty Inside), more robot shenanigans (Are You Human Too), zombies in Joseon (Kingdom), a bunch of age-skewed romances, and more.

As always, you can check out the Dramabeans Youtube channel directly, where you can subscribe for updates.

jb - you have a 100 chapter book which is a 500 year old classic , you better not screw it up plus it's seunggi's comeback drama is all of us wishing and praying .

after rewatching hwayugi multipe times i'm totaly hooked . i love it so much and seunggi is the perfect monkey king. so hongsisters are off the hook for now .

who knew it will be the production team that will mess things up royally ? hopefully with the pd they will work well and still create a qualty drama

They rushed the drama so fast and they weren't ready, they should've pushed back the airing one week at least after the previous drama ended, like what they usually do but they were in a rush to compete with the other channels it backfired on them.
This unfortunate accident will make the atmosphere uncomfortable for the cast and crew, I hope they learned their lesson.

That's a lot of dramas to look forward, but i am annoyed at some pairings like Mr. Sunshine not only because of LBH's scandals but I can't picture him romancing KTR, he's so old in his late 40s and she's in her mid-late twenties, he's like her uncle.

Radio Romance is also a turn off because KSH is so young for the role, but I can't pass on this, since i am a fan of KSH, they already held the script reading.

About the Noona Who Serves me food i read that Son Yi Jin and Jung Ha In are offered the roles, I hope they accept it's a good pairing.

Glad that Yeo Jin Goo passed that drama, at least one actor did a good move, although I would've watched it too if he didn't pass. i read that both WDH and Joy has confirmed thier roles.

I wish it will be easy to watch Kingdom....sigh.

I love Yeo Jin-goo to pieces but I didn't watch one single episode of his last drama.
I think I'm so done watching crappy dramas just for the love of my favorite actors.
That goes for Jo Jung-seok in "Two Cops," Park Eun-bin in "Nothing to Lose" etc.

I'm also glad he passed on that "Untold Scandal" remake. He is always in demand both in Chungmuro and dramaland and he has plenty of chances to play more adult lead roles in the future.
I hope he sticks with films and cable dramas for now.

I think the strike has a lot to do with it and unreliable news coverage.
JTBC owns the ratings in news now. Viewers are so fed up with corruptions (the big 3s).

I give a chance of a drama that has one of my favorite actress/actors before I decide to drop, I only watched two episodes of his last drama and Nothing To lose I couldn't watch more, I think I'll drop Two cops too i am annoyed at everything in that drama I can't waste my time more, i gave it a lot of chance but the writing is ridiculous.

I wish Kim So Hyun passed the Radio drama too, it's still early for her to be aged up.

I think our young child actors' management should start acting responsibly too and decline those kind of offers. Those producers etc are not going to look out for their best interest. They want money end of story.
It's not like Kim So Hyun, Yeo Jin-goo, Kim Yoo-jung, Kim Sae-ron etc are struggling to get work in this industry. They can be picky if they want to.

but she is mature beyond her age.. and can translate that well on screen..

i am actually totally confused with the age factor brought up time and again in this field.. creative arts.. it makes no sense.. as long as you can provide a safe and healthy environment to your actors to perform their roles in all earnesty .. that should be fine..

I don't actually get the problem in most of these debates.. e.g. doctor i understood because people were irked with the idea of a school teacher loving his student.. but goblin i don't understand, kim tae ri is no child.. so how does age gap play up in mr. sunshine.. what do you call michael douglas and catherine zeta jones marriage then? or suzy and lee min ho

I totally agree with the issue with Netflix. And I think my slump this year was partly due to them grabbing all the dramas and refused to show them on time. It takes the hype from the dramas, and the thrill of live-watching and discussing.

That being said, I'm really bummed that we couldn't have Wise Prison Life recap, because I found the drama so rich and there.are.so.many.to.talk.about! (I know there's the beanie page but nothing beats recap!). There are dramas I found fun to binge, but when Netflix took all the dramas that I don't want to binge and simply want to live-watch. :(

Required fields are marked *

That's really interesting, because I disagree with the Netflix issue and that's because the pros and cons are largely location-related.

I'm in the UK and can hardly watch anything that is on Dramafever, as they never seem to have the license to show anything in my region. Also, UK Netflix actually shows some of the dramas on a weekly bases. So I get 2 episodes of Wise Prison Life less than a week after when it actually airs, which I think is acceptable. At least it's in time to join in with the recaps and not get a week behind. I watched Black that way (and regretted it ha ha). It's going to be the same for Hwayugi, where they're going to show the first 2 episodes tomorrow (can't wait).

I know that for other regions it's different and they do seem to wait to show them. There are also some other shows, like AoY2, where they did keep it back for the UK too. But overall, for me personally, Netflix is not a bad thing, especially as the only other legal option is Viki.

Oh and I have a soft spot for Netflix as they are the ones who introduced me to kdrama in the first place and I still think that my kdrama addiction is A Good Thing :-)

I wonder what the issue is where they choose to air the dramas in the UK basically live, but not in the US? Is it a licensing issue?

If it's the whole wanting people to binge watch, they're not paying attention to the market. I'll start any drama that is remotely interesting to me live, and watch the whole thing even if it turns mediocre (or bad *Hwarang*), but I'll only binge watch stuff others have raved about. So I'm probably not going to watch Man to Man or Argon, although I would have live watched them.

Man to Man live-aired on UK Netflix too. I've got no idea why and I can only speculated it's due to licensing. I was pretty miffed (understatement!) when I was staying with my parents and could not watch most of the dramas that I'd been following because Netflix realised I was in a different country!

Same here. I live in Manila and Dramafever or Viki is not available. But, Netflix airs the the episodes weekly so we can still enjoy discussions via recaps. Weird setup with the US Netflix though.

I am interested in Mother (the writer, LEE BO YOUNG, the plot, the characters, the directing etc. I am very excited for it) , Mr Sunshine (the production value, the acting, KIM TAE RI, the costumes, YYS, the plot line sounds interesting-I do not have high expectations, I just want to see what happens with it), My Ajusshi (the writer, IU with Jang Ki Yong loveline hopefully I liked them together in her music videos, the cast, I like healing dramas), Kingdom (BAE DOONA, the writer, plot, zombies, production etc.), Beauty Inside (the plot, potential cast, more exploration of themes), Pretty Noona who buys me food (the director, SON YE JI, JUNG HAE IN, Noona romance!!)-hopefully there are more to come

I really can't watch those YT vids: this vlog format discourages me instantly to watch or to listen.
It spoiled all the year in review feature for me, since i found very little interest to the articles wrote by beanie guest.
Thankfully Mary's global review saved the month and prevented me to totally give up on the site.

My picks for next year:

Fingers crossed that 2018 will be the year of Signal 2!

Also i'm very excited about Voice 2 (only if Lee Hana is still the lead) and Kingdom.

I'm looking too for Mother though i don't expect a drama of the same quality as the original japanese masterpiece, but rather a korean's reflection on maternity which is rare to see treated in k-dramaland with young children especially.

Netflix made me discover what became my favourite drama of this year: the j-drama Erased and made available Million Yen Woman which i wouldn't have watched otherwise.
Also Argon, Misaeng, Secret Forest deserve to be known outside the community of the k-drama watchers and that's exactly what's happening with more people getting interested in asian productions after confirming that Netflix has a lot of foreign little gems.
So i'm happy for the exposition they gave to show who wouldn't have been noticed otherwise.

Though i agree: binge watching is lonely and soesn't leave much space for discussion ....

It depends on the drama: you're right that it didn't work well for Argon and Age of Youth 2.

But for Forest Secret, without Netflix, i'm not sure the sub teams would have been able to do the subs as fast (the subber uplead the subs from netflix Asia), considering that the drama was heavy on dialogues, which were also long and complex (the lines were often ambiguous and with double meaning)....

1

Required fields are marked *

Oh, is Erased that good? I'd better go off and watch that. I have some theories about what Million Yen Woman was really about...

I've told so many of my friends to watch Misaeng - but to stick with it for at least 2 episodes and not expect an attention-grabbing pilot. Not sure if any of them have listened to me though.

For me, Erased was the best drama because it gave me everything i wanted to see in term of concept and was flawless in its execution, be it for the writing of the mystery and the relationships, or the directing and the cinematography/photography.

I'm not going to lie: it's not an original drama, time travel has been overdone this year. Also the concept for a sci-fi drama is not as ambitious as for Circle with its two timelines and the characters were mostly straightforward, so someone else could see a lack of complexity.

But i didn't care one minute: the travel back in the 80's offered enough escapism through parallel universes to keep the excitation and enjoyment for a sci -fi story, and the writing was carefully crafted to keep until the very end the thrill created by the resolution of the main mystery (who killed the children?), long after the revelation of the identity of the killer.

But what got me so badly hooked were the relationships: they were so good and positive! I just wanted to stay with the characters forever. Satoru and his mother are the most precious people ever created. Their humanity and courage are an example for everyone. Their love for each other was also so inspiring. Same can be said for all his friends: children and adults.

The drama wasn’t afraid to pull few very radical twists for our hero, and to take time to follow completely the consequences of those major changes. I love that j-drama aren’t afraid to leave their characters scarred by life and not looking necessarily for a happy end, at least not without a cost.

The cast was all superb: but the one who deserve a special prize are the two actors playing Satori at different times of his life (when he is 29 years old and 11 years old) and the actor playing the killer. Their chemistry was fantastic and they played each other in a way which kept me glued to my screen every time they appeared together.

No kdrama watched this year was as enjoyable as this one for me.

Just finished watching the first episode of Erased @coolgirl and I'm really liking it! I like that our hero can see what's going to happen and go back and actually change it. What was so frustrating for me in While You Were Sleeping and Black (well, there was loads that was frustrating about Black) was that our main characters who saw the future were incapable of changing it (that they had to get a guy to actually change the future for them is a whole different topic for discussion)

I also like that the Erased hero needs to figure out what it is that he's meant to change in the few minutes that he's got available to him, and that - in his words - he can alter it from something 'negative' to something 'neutral'.

Anyway, am enjoying it so far, thanks for the recommendation!

I'm spreading the love for this little underrated gem as much as i can, because it's such a joy when you meet unexpectedly a drama that fits all what you want to see.
I imagine that it won't be hard to binge watch it with the length the episodes (25 min)!
In the same vein of time travel and changing the past and the future, there's also the king of all dramas: Signal....

Forgot to say that i'm curious to read your theory about Million Yen Woman. This drama was really a puzzle open to all interpretations, even after its end...

Required fields are marked *

Okay, here's my theory - feel free to strongly disagree with me! - but in my head, this was about a writer working on his next novel.

The women in the house are the main characters in the book. Entering the house = entering his head. The money they pay him is the fee he gets for writing the novel (or serial, whatever it is). That's why the invite says they might die if they enter, because he doesn't know yet which one of the characters he's going to kill off.

The woman he's with at the end (I can't remember her name), is a character in the house/book that he's based on his real-life girlfriend. That small place is his actual house.

So it shows how characters have to die (that you have to write books in which lots of women get killed) in order to get fame as a writer, compared to the more literary works.

I have to admit that my theory is based on not a great deal other than trying to make sense of what was going on...

I'm totally on board with this symbolic interpretation! It fits well the dreamy vibe /magical feel of the drama, and reminded me of David Lynch's films which constantly plays with different level of reality.

I love especially the concepts that characters also fictional in their own world. So meta!

However i regret (and that's a problem which initially belongs to the drama) that those strong females characters could only be a fantasy for a male character who had all power to chose who die and who was worth to become a love interest .

But anyway, i really enjoyed reading your theory and wish that it could have become part of the drama...

I'm really looking forward to Four Men, for Oppa, of course, and also the rest of the cast is good , just praying it will be good, please be good!

I'm not sure what I feel about Radio Romance, I love both Yoon Do-joon and Kim So-hyun individually, I don't know how I'm going to like them together! I don't get bothered by age gaps usually but her being 18 and playing someone who's 25, I'm not sure it will be believable!

Mr. Sunshine.. hmm.. I don't read celebrity news so I don't know much about Lee Byung-hun's scandal(s) but I'm not really a fan of him and I haven't watched anything of Kim tae-ri, still I'm kind of excited for this show for Yoo Yeon-seok and Byun Yo-han (it's been ages since the last time we saw him), I'd watch anything for those two!

Looking forward to Mother as well, but I think this drama will take time for subs to be released.Oh Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food too. LOL actually there are a lot.

For now I'm enjoying Hwayugi a lot, although at times I keep thinking what I'm watching actually! LOL. Anyway I'll be checking the rests too, especially there are many veterans making a comeback next year and I can only sincerely pray their drama will be the good ones!

"Pretty Noona" is the one drama I'm looking forward to. It's my favorite PD Ahn Pan-seok, Son Ye-jin and JTBC...
Ahn's name alone sells it. He cast accordingly and has freedom to do his thing with JTBC.
Take your time 👍.

"My Ahjussi" (TVN 2018). Lee Sun Gyun and Oh Dal-soo is good enough.

Next is my kickass girl Kim Ok-bin and Kang Ji-hwan in "Children of The Lesser God" OCN. (Feb 2018)

"Should we Kiss First" (SBS Feb 2018). Kam Woo-sung has been MIA-ing for a long time and his leading lady is Kim Sun-ah. I approve of this pairing!

Another weekender "My Husband Oh Jak-doo" with Kim Hyun-soo and Kim Kang-woo. Don't know what the heck it's about but I love the leads. (MBC Feb 2018)

I'm 60/40 with "Live" for Jung Yumi and Noh Hee-kyun otherwise I'd passed on it. I'm not sure I can handle this PD. (TVN March 2018).

I don't know what to expect from "Return" other than Go Hyun-jung is in it. PD meh, writer is new, leading man (don't care for) and I'm tired of legal/cop dramas.
(SBS Jan 2018)

I think the locals won't have a problem tuning in to watch Lee Byung-hun in "Mr Sunshine" even with his playboy reputation.
I hope Kim Tae-ri will do well in her first drama.

Not Korean but work of a Korean:
Director Park Chan-wook -BBC miniseries of John Le Carré’s "The Little Drummer Girl."

Among your lists, I'm worried about Return the most. SBS legal drama can turn to so meh. Idc about the leading man either, aside from Go Hyun-jung, there is also Shin Sung-rok among the main casts. I don't want to sound so negative but this drama might turned out like Saimdang.

I've forgotten about Live LOL thank you for putting this in the list!

i think someone mentioned it earlier, after your first vlog -- i also am having trouble "catching" the names of the drama TITLES and also some actor names, as the two of you speak so fluently (to our ears, FAST).

it would be nice to have the titles in captions (with cute type and colors like on variety show captions)...
*winks*

tho i'm certain it is easier said than done, since i have no idea how such things are accomplished.

but it would be nice for some of us who can't hear quickly enough, i had to back up a few times to catch the title or name that you were referring to...

In an ideal world, there will be no exclusive license thing and the streaming sites can choose to carry all the titles they want. They'll just compete on quality of subs, original content, and the community. Like, Viki and DF have different vibes and maybe if you prefer the fan discussion in one, you'll subscribe there.

I agree, Mary, that would be amazing if everyone had access to everything. It's a very fragmented viewing world. I guess the same is true of American tv these days too--Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime. I'm mainly excited for Kingdom because a.) BAE DOONA <3<3<3 but also b.) Joseon zombies! I'm bummed that Netflix has snatched it though, I want to watch it the second it comes out.

Other than that, Mother is looking really promising because I love Lee Bo-young, and also because it has the same writer as The Handmaiden, which is one of my recent favorite movies. Now that Woo Do-Hwan is up for The Great Seducer I think I might give it a try, because I'd love to see him in a leading role. I do hope we get to see Yeo Jin-gu in another drama in 2018, though, because I think his acting is great, he just seemed too young for this sort of part.

SIGNAL 2 WAS CONFIRMED?

!!!!!!!!

I wish I could watch Hwayugi because Lee Seung-gi is amazing, but Oh Yeon-seo and I started off on the wrong foot. I watched her in a 50 episode long makjang that drove me nuts. Whatever. I could always rewatch My Girlfriend is a Gumiho.

I don't hate Netflix for streaming dramas just because I already pay for Hulu and Amazon Prime, as well, so, I don't want to pay Viki or Dramafever (btw, what was the other one Javabeans named?) to see some of their premium member dramas or get decent quality. However, Netflix should stream dramas that are from the previous cycle if they really want to expand their services. It'd be easier to binge for latecomers!

German subtitles on viki aren't that great. Because there are a lot of subbers who do that to improve their german and aren't native speakers the quality of subs vary a lot.
