Drama viewership ratings for the week of Aug. 3-9, 2020

Ah, some change this week! Always nice to see, especially when that change is positive. For instance, at the beginning of the week, The Good Detective made a big jump to 5.9 and 6.4 percent. I remember this timeslot struggling for the longest time, and it’s still struggling with its other shows, so numbers like these feel like a big win.

There was more change in the midweek slot, the majority not so positive. The numbers for three shows — Memorials, United Effort, and Was it Love — went down. Meanwhile, newcomer Flower of Evil went up to 3.7 percent. There’s always one outlier in these timeslots, and The Good Detective and Flower of Evil are certainly that.

The weekend slot was steady for quite a few weeks, but after two shows wrapped up, we finally got some good news. With their final episodes, both Backstreet Rookie and It’s Okay to Not Be Okay achieved their highest ratings. I definitely expected more from It’s Okay, considering its star power, but y’know… it’s okay. 😉

I love it but it feels like the kind of show that was destined to be a cult favorite and not a ratings one.

I’m not sure any Wed/Thur drama will do too well until TV Chosun’s trot show ends.

convenience store did well by placing baits at right time. Better use of consumer data. They knew whom they were targeting and marketing worked. You have to measure the level of audience at the earliest. That's how you do business. Consumer isn't king and that's why there exist laws and acts to prevent them from unscrupulous practices of business houses.
As for election - audience is giving it what it deserves. You can fool and manipulate the consumer but don't be right in their face. Even that number looks high for such a trash.

The King: Eternal Monarch fans will be somewhat relieved to know that despite its abysmal ratings and negative reception by Koreans, Backstreet Rookie has eclipsed it in both aspects:

- Record-low average ratings of 6.3 in SBS’s Friday-Saturday prime-time drama time slot ever since its introduction, beating the previous one held by Nokdu Flower at 6.6 (The King: Eternal Monarch itself was second lowest when it finished its run with an average of 7.7)
- Record-low average ratings of any SBS drama in 2020 (The King: Eternal Monarch held the previous record for prime-time dramas in 2020 since SBS’s daily drama Want a Taste? had an average of 7.4)
- While The King: Eternal Monarch suffered from controversies such as mistakes of Japanese depictions and excessive PPL, Backstreet Rookie had calls for it to be cancelled and even received official warnings by regulation authorities

Not all hope is lost though:
- The current SBS daily drama Mom has an Affair has an average of 6 with 40 more episodes to go (or 8 weeks), when this drama ends in October it might just have an average lower than 6.3 and Backstreet Rookie will no longer hold the title of lowest average rating for any 2020 drama (though it’ll still hold the title for prime-time dramas in 2020 then)
- The two new SBS prime-time dramas Do You Like Brahms? and Alice premiering later this month might just get worse average ratings -> Of particular interest is the latter drama starring Joo Won in his comeback drama post military service just like Lee Min Ho and Ji Chang Wook (We’ll ignore the mess that was Melting Me Softly): will he be able to escape the curse and break the pattern?

I hope Joo Won has a successful comeback but his drama is about time travel so it seems doubtful. Maybe it won’t be a complete mess?

I also hope that Joo woni will be well-received for his role in Alice.

I read your comment with this look on my face 🤨 lol

For real, I am suuuuper confused at the comparison bt The King and Backstreet Rookie.

Backstreet Rookie was (minus the dreadlocks) one of the best shows I've seen all year. I absolutely loved so much about it and Daehyun is my favorite iteration of Ji Chang Wook to date.

No need to get into anything here, btw, I just felt like providing a contrasting opinion ☺️✌️

I'm so happy for The Good Detective! I'm having so much fun while watching and I'm invested in the story. It's been a while (probably since Watcher) that a crime /police drama didn't hook me like that (and I've watched quite a few since).

I also think Memorials deserves better, not only because of the production itself, but it's pure rom-com, and nothing seems out of place.

Wed & Thu at 21:30PM people need to choose between Memorials, Chip In and Was it love? I'm not watching Was it love so I don't know how good it is, but I would be in trouble if I had to choose between Memorials and Chip In lol, so I'm not surprise that all the attention isn't focus in only one drama.
But what I don't understand is what happens with Flower of evil's ratings since this one is at 22:50PM and let's be honest, this drama's on fire.

While other dramas are airing at 9.30pm, Flower of Evil is at 11.30pm directly going against the very popular, 30% plus rating variety show Mr Trot.

Well they basically set up a drama with really good writing and acting to failure... these TV executives have worms for brains

"on fire" how? Does it have risque and sexual scenes like so many dramas these days are forcing in?

No, what I meant was that -in my opinion- it's a good drama, it has a lot of potential, and after watching it you only want more.
We saw one intense kiss scene in episode 1, I don't if that's what you mean by the sexual scenes that are forcing nowdays, but the drama isn't about that so that doesn't matter.

I will miss BACKSTREET ROOKIE. It was so good- and the ending left me with a tear in my eye and a smile on my face. Episode 16 got 9.5% - and deserved it. And when Kim Yoo-jung said she took this part because the show was about family people scoffed but this actually turned out to be much more true than anyone might have suspected at first.

ONCE AGAIN is the best weekender in a while. It deserves the rating which it is getting.

What I liked about the second leads was how natural/realistic they were.

Like Puppy never does anything but support Saet-byul and pine for her. He says outright to Dae-hyun that he like SB, but at no point tries to break them up, because that's the kind of guy he is.

Yoon-joo, by contrast, does try to separate them throughout, but I felt like that was exactly what a character with such privilege and self-center was would do. She probably really believed that she was doing it for his best, too.

The ending, with DH leaving his corporate job to go back to where he's happiest was doubly effective imo with Yoon Joo as a contrast to what corporate means (status, wealth, connections, NOT happiness, fulfillment).

Dang I'm gonna miss this show.

Happy for BR. People can scoff all they want to. But the fact that this drama did those numbers despite the huge controversies and backlash before and during the show is a feat. Please don’t compare this with a sageuk or big name production before it. Those are expected to do much better and if they didn’t, don’t trash BR to make their numbers look better.

BR is a drama with heart. Not perfect but it’s really not bad and quite meaningful.

You are right about how well BR did. Romcoms usually do not get these numbers. BR had heart indeed.

I agree, comparing it to big productions is so outlandish. This almost feels like a home or indie movie. Simple, heartwarming. All characters are so goofy and normal, they are real, people you can find in your neighborhood.

Actually, the controversy is just created to hype the drama. But still, the results were underwhelming. It is the lowest rated SBS Fri-Sat drama to date.

I love "Train" but unfortunately, their rating doesn't reflect the greatness of the show. They have yet broken 1.5% so far, with two more episodes remaining to close the series. It has been facing some very strong competition. Also, it's hard for the Sci-Fi, suspense categories to compete during the weekend when a lot of people just try to chill and relax (hence the comedy, romantic drama are more popular.

I love watching Train too. At least we know the show will end as promised with 12 eps instead of the network cutting down the episodes due to low ratings. That’s the worst thing to get when you love watching a show and the network decide to cut their loss.

Agree here. The writing is excellent and storyline tight and cohesive. Pacing also great. And all the actors are doing fantastic especially YSY. Wish theyd put this on legal streaming sites like Netflix to get the love it deserves.
