Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 27-Aug. 2, 2020

Well, July has come and gone, quicker than a 3-episode drama special. Before the month ended, we did get one new drama. And going into August, we’ll be getting much, much more. So if you’re tired of this season’s batch of dramas and you’re already wanting the next, hang in there; we’re almost there. For now, let’s check in with the current chart.

As usual, the cable channels are really dominating today’s ratings. To start off, Monday-Tuesday drama The Good Detective made a nice little jump to 5.1 percent. Then, midweek, we had the premiere of Flower of Evil, what seems to be a very cracktastic melodrama. The drama premiered to a nice 3.4 percent and later decreased to 2.9 percent. Still, a decent start.

Over on the weekend, there wasn’t much change — the dramas are still doin’ their thing and bringing in their respective audiences. Two dramas will be ending next week, though, so maybe that will up those numbers.

For the gurus in the know, completely random, curious questions about weekenders (due entirely to my ignorance): What time of day do the weekenders (e.g., Once Again) air in local time in SK? Is ~30% considered a good viewership rating for a weekender? Also, does only one channel air weekenders? or does DB report only on one?

I'm no guru, but I'll try to answer your questions. KBS weekenders (e.g. Once Again) air at 19:55 KST so 7:55 P.M. Viewership around 20-30% is good and greater than 30% very good. MBC used to air weekenders but stopped in 2018-2019.

Thank you! I don't usually look at this weekly update on DB, but the numbers got me curious.

Thank you. This was clearly a *duh* moment for me. That second link is awesome - I didn't know there were so many shows in the pipeline, and the titles, gosh, someone needs to give the translators some copywriting advice...

You're welcome. The both sites are practical. asianwiki put pictures of the characters so when you suck at remembering korean names like me, it helps a lot :p

I'm no guru either but let's just say that KBS has been owning that weekend family drama time slot for years and I don't see it changing anytime soon. Ratings is mostly above 20-30%.

Good to know. so it's basically one or two soap operas a year on one channel. I'm impressed at the ratings, and how they manage to surpass the 16-ep dramas consistently, considering they probably air at or around the same time slot.

Yes.
Family dramas maybe a bit too makjang and repetitive to some of us but to the older local viewers they seems to enjoy watching it because they can relate.
They are faithful fans and KBS keeps them happy.

The main head of the family and his wife are usually played by some of the best veteran actors in Dramaland.
Cheon Ho-jin is a regular. Kim Yeong-cheol and Kim Hae-sook in "My Father is Strange." Yoo Dong Geun in "What happens to my Family."
"Mother of Mine" with an all ladies main cast (Kim Hae-sook and Jo Mung-gil .... ) almost hit 40% (the national drama status) last year. "My only one" 2018 with Choi Soo-jong...was the last national drama to date on a public broadcast channel. Highest was 49.4%.

High ratings is to be expected. Anything less than 20% would be a disappointment imo.

Oh this is very interesting. ~50%!!! Wow. I've heard good things about Father is Strange, but I don't think I've heard of the others. I guess it's like bread and butter for the actors, even if the roles aren't really meaty enough.

@pickleddragon

Our main guy from Into the Ring was on that national drama "My Only One." He is versatile, but I knew he would nail the rom-com b/c in the show he had to play romantic scenes and he was quite moving/swoony in the clips.

Funny thing is he looked skinner there than ITR, also the camera angles for ITR makes his face kinda look big when he has a small face in rl lmao.

@soulsearch12 Hah - this is interesting. I thought PSH was specializing in playing serial killers. :D

@pickleddragon Lol yep! I'm glad he's not being type-casted as serial killers thank god!

See? He looks so diff. there. And he's gentle/kind in My Only One! (The rest of the show I hear is making/ridiculous)

@soulsearch12 Those were nice! Thanks for the links. The hair colour and style are very different, and I almost didn't recognize him! Agree about the face -- I guess it's the camera work.

Once Again is such a good weekender! I've just finished watching the last episode and dad's acting made me cry again, he's such believable actor. One of our beanies, the most sceptical one, calls it The Divorced Family but life works sometimes like that and the acting is spot on. There are only few episodes left so they will wrap it with pinky glasses but nevermind.

Hah! When I am so inclined, I will pick it up. Out of curiosity, I would definitely like to watch a weekender one day.

KBS weekenders do so well, that MBC/SBS were like what's the point and stopped airing for a while. I did like Never Twice but Once Again has the better writing (The person who wrote Once Again wrote Weightlifting Fairy Bok Jo/High School King/Familiar Wife).

Ratings wise very solid/good, social sites too good ranking. However, someone said that 30% on weekenders are 15% comparably to week-day dramas. The audience is more older based for weekenders. I would love to see the breakdown b/c 20-35% for any show rn is major.

Ooh if it's by the same person who wrote WFKBJ, then it's definitely something I'd want to watch. Haven't watched the other 16-ep shows though.

The statistic that 15% weekday = 30% weekend makes logical sense. And if it's older audiences, then the larger numbers also make logical sense. Your breakdown question would be interesting to know how much viewership of a 16-ep show also watches weekenders. Going by the content of the two kinds of dramas, and intuitively, I'd say there's not much overlap. I guess the younger folks are out living it up, away from tv screens ;) (which is always a good thing!!)

It's very good, but weekenders tend to have a lot of filler scenes/episodes. This one is the expectation though, that being said its almost done. Younger viewers (18-25 range) are watching on playback/online/SNS.

Apart from Weightlifting Fairy, and the other dramas that you mentioned..this writer wrote the drama OMy Ghostess as well..
ALSO i agree with you that weekenders seemed to have fillers bit Once Again is indeed an exception as story is fast paced and issues are resolved quickly without much drag..
Moreover it is popular amongst the youngsters as well.. According to good data report, last week..5 Once Again actors featured in top 10..That is a great feat..And the drama overall has been ranking at 2nd place since many weeks.

For me this is the most enjoyable Sat-Sun drama that I m watching at the moment.

2

ONCE AGAIN cracked 30%. That is outstanding.

We should all remember that viewers streaming their shows have altered what the statistics mean. For instance BACKSTREET ROOKIE is the second highest rated show on this list.

Nothing to applied for BSR it's the lowest rates drama that SBS ever had in that timeslot. Basically a flop by their standards and they have to pay a huge fine for the sanctions imposed on the drama by the KCSC. They can't even rebroadcast it anymore or sell it.
