Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 13-19, 2020

As usual, we have a lot of low numbers across the board. I keep trying to tell myself that this is the new norm, but with numbers this low, it’s kind of hard to adjust.

First up, rom-com Men Are Men slowly went down, down to 3.3 percent. Will You Have Dinner With Me finished its run, starting out strong and falling between 2 to 4 percent. Though its final 4.3 percent isn’t its best rating, it is the best it’s done in a while. The dramas over on cable are faring much better, with The Good Detective showing a nice increase.

The weekend has me curious, because a few dramas just started and are already showing interesting audience reactions. Graceful Friends had a dip with its second episode and then an increase with its third and fourth. Maybe the drama has found its footing? On the other hand, Train had an increase with its second episode and then a notable dip with its third.

How Once Again led the ratings again despite not having Dramabeans recaps due to 60+ episodes. Too epic fun Korean scripted show ever.

Once Again is in the genre of weekend family drama that is catered for a wider but somewhat different range of audience than the weekday sixteen episode dramas. They also have much higher ratings when done well. And KBS has been leading in this drama space for many years that scoring a rating of mid thirties is not uncommon.

Wow... BR have higher ratings than IONTBO...that's why I don't believe in ratings... Hehe.

Can't compare it like that. tvn is cable channel (less viewers), sbs is public. If you compare with that in mind, BR's rating is nothing compared to IONTBO

The average number of viewers of the SBS Friday-Saturday drama ‘Backstreet Rookie’, which aired from the 4th to the 5th, reached 821,000, ranking first among the mini-series dramas on all channels broadcast during the past week (June 29-July 5). The MBC drama Kkondae Intern, which recorded 675,000 viewers, ranked second and tvN Psycho But It’s Okay, which accounted for 673,000 viewers, ranked third.

BR is being aired on a public station while IOTNBO is being aired on a cable tv. BR's ratings 6-8% on a public broadcast means its just average ratings. More than 12% are more likely the high ratings drama on public station. IOTNBO's more than 5% on tvn means it is doing greater than average plus it is also being aired at the same time in tving (livestreaming app) which they also had 72% ratings and of course it is also being aired by netflix and it was #1 on multiple countries and #6 worldwide. So if you'll consider all of these, IOTNBO have greater results in terms of ratings and popularity not only in korea but also internationally.

Can viewers stop comparing the ratings for BR and Okay? They are not in the same timeslot, so they aren't competing directly with each other. The genre for both dramas are different. Both are available on OTT platforms, Netflix and also tving(?) for Okay, Wavve and IQIYI for BR. There's really no need to compare both dramas. Fyi, BR is aired at the same time on IQIYI, not sure about wavve but it's no 1 on both platforms.

I was just replying/explaining to the original comment comparing the two dramas and insinuating that IOTNBO is lower in terms of ratings? Not sure why I am the one being reprimanded by you when I was just correcting her comments. I almost belived in your comment not to compare the two dramas and then at the last sentence you go by saying BR is being aired on IQIYI and no. 1 on both platforms.

I was just adding on, not comparing. Both dramas are no 1 on their respective platforms. That is all.

I watch a drama, like it enormously, and feel surprise when I read of its dismal performance in the ratings. I watch another drama which has record ratings, find that it bores me, and again feel that flicker of surprise that I am at odds with the majority of the viewers out there.

Ratings. Most of the time, I don't bother about them. If I like a show, I'd like it, no matter what. Like Weightlifting Fairy. It was an absolute gem, but never fared well, ratings-wise. I do get a little concerned ------ nothing monumental, though, I don't fall on my knees and weep and pull out my hair (homecut btw, since covid) ------ if I like a show, and find that it has been cut by a few episodes, because of its tanking ratings. But when a show you love hits the jackpot with soaring ratings ------- I love you, Hyuk! -------- and the makers announce that there will be an extension ------ gosh, the jubilation that swamps my thumping little fangirly heart is just The. Best. Feeling. Ever. Even better than the warmth that zips through these cloggy, lockdowned veins after devouring a steaming bowl of Thai Green Curry.

So what is the point of this post?

To tag, of course.

Lol YY 😂.

But when a show you love hits the jackpot with soaring ratings ------- I love you, Hyuk!

Hyuk forever!!!! We need a Sunny-Hyuk spinoff 🤩.

4

Pretty well the only time I care about ratings is when they - to use a completely hypothetical example - cut four episodes off one of the most beautiful and powerful pieces of television this year because of them.
Hypothetically speaking.

I admire your commitment to Famy's mental health, YY but I don't think it necessitates lying to her.

6

Found you, @trinpie!

3

@yyishere you did!

I just want to mention when I went to tag you I started typing WhyWhy and couldn't figure out why I wasn't finding you 😅

2

Thank you YY for stating the obvious. I’m happy to know Lee Min Ho loves me the mostest. He loves you a lot too for watching his drama to the end with me! Till next Lee Min Ho drama again! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 I miss spazzing with you on Lee Min Ho 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

3

Thank you LT @leetennant for your concern about my mental health. I miss spazzing and talking with you about Lee Min Ho and how great he is everyday. I know you don’t believe Lee Min Ho loves me the mostest cuz he wore your name once or twice, which was the source of my extreme jealousy, but I’m truly happy for you as a fellow Minoz😿. I’m sure in his next drama he’ll wear my name too. A loyal fan can hope.

3

Yes @13infamyss those are all things that definitely happened.
Our long talks every day as we watched LMH in our pyjamas and braided each other's hair. They were the highlights of watching that show that I can't remember the name of because I have trauma blocked it from my memory. Something about kimchi and LT tattoos. You shouldn't do that btw as much as you are tempted to. Resist tattooing my name. @yyishere especially you. Unfortunately @egads has already gone ahead with it. One day I will meet her and see her LT tattoo.

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Such fond memories we had LT @leetennant with YY @yyishere while watching Lee Min Ho mounted on a horse with hot red balloons 🎈 in the air where the worlds of zeros and ones existed. I remember that time our favourite number was Euler too!

We def should do that again when Lee Min Ho’s next drama airs.
I know LT, I want to erase the #DramaThatMustNotBeNamed from my mind too. But ottoke, Lee Min Ho was there. I remember everything about him and all the fun things we did for him!

@leetennant my tattoo turned out okay, but I decided to go with your portrait instead of your name https://twitter.com/PerfectTat2/status/776816689610690560/photo/1

I just saw this today. I swear the tags don't work half the time.

Agree on stop comparing ratings but the orig comment already did, what we're trying to do now is just educate and share to our fellow kdrama lovers the difference of public station(sbs/kbs/mbc) and cable tv (tvn/jtbc/ocn) in terms of ratings. Knowing it goes a long way in our kdrama world journey especially if you regularly check out Drama Viewership Ratings post.

Most shows that are brand new or on going weekly goes to #1.
Why? because most of the shows that it's competing with are already over with, months ago or years ago.

Here is an example.
Top 10 Netflix shows July 19
1. It's Okay to Not Be Okay (live)
2.Heart Signal (2017)
3.Cursed (2017)
4.The World of the Married (5/2020)
5.Hospital Playlist (5/2020)
6.Was It Love? (live)
7.Stranger(2017)
8.Mr. Sunshine (2018)
9.Warrior Nun (live)
10.My Mister (2018)

I love the show but I'm getting tired of all this. It's not doing as well as expected in Korea and that's ok.
Really, it is what it is.

Here's the sad truth.
BR never aimed to be the blockbuster but the range 8% is almost the same as TKEM finale, which is good for them.

It's Okay aimed for 15% and only pull 5% , that's where the sigh comes

The truth is BR and TKEM are both failures and non JCW did not aim for just 8% being the hallyu superstar that he is. KYJ might have that standard but not JCW he has higher standards for ratings and he charges for that.

It would be nice if My Unfamiliar Family can hit 5% in the final two episodes.

Nice to see The Good Detective getting decent numbers.

I'm a little sad Train is so low. I'm really into sci fi genre but Koreans don't seem to be that much.

I'm really looking forward to it and hope it does well. I like Joo Won's acting style and I hope he will have a nice rating for his comeback drama. However I am getting a strong 'Yong Pal' vibe from this one 😭 as in the vibe I got when I saw Yong Pal's trailer, It seemed over hyped. I am praying I'll be proved wrong.

Once Again is a very good weekender and is getting the audience which it deserves. I look forward to each episode.

Backstreet Rookie is a good comedy and is well worth watching. It is my second favorite show right now after MY UNFAMILIAR FAMILY which would probably have higher numbers if it were broadcast on one of the Big Three.

It's so good to binge watch. The actor who plays dad is one of the best I've never seen before. I watch it on speed level 2 so it doesn't seem time consuming - instead of 54 minutes of the actual time it takes me only 27 minutes and it manages make me cry because it feels so real in some situations.

The actor who plays dad in Once Again has scored a record breaking rating in the 2012 weekend family drama - My Daughter Seo Young with final episode at 47%! He played the father of Seo Young and won a couple of awards for that. The drama also made Lee Bo-young an A-lister in dramas.

There are many excellent actor-dads in Korea but I have to say, currently, Jung Ji-young is really killing the dad's role in My Unfamilar Family - absolutely magnificent performance!

BR and IONTBO are 2 completely different shows with different audiences and either show being more successful based on certain metrics (ratings, buzz - international or local) is not a slight on the show you enjoy. It’s barely a competition between these two and the strange fan wars between these two shows is just strange to me, it’s not like they are the only 2 shows currently airing...

With two episodes remaining I am beginning to wonder if it will best Q: L&W’s highest rating of 6.348% for episode 16–final.

I think it's okay has a serious pacing issue and I am not okay with how they portrayed the hospital and their crew. This drama has that "the only capable people are the main lead" formula which I find uninteresting. There must be other way to help people than use the "bizarre extreme" way in the female lead heads. It doesn't work in real life but glorified as "revelation" in the drama.

The acting is stellar and no one can deny it.
I am losing interest other than the main lead but I keep thinking about it and I think the drama doesn't really progressing untill the last 15 minutes if each episode.

I agree with you..I just don't like it when the fl's reckless ways results in some improvement in the patient's condition when in reality it could have some serious repercussions. It feels like her ways of doing things are glorified and she ultimately comes out as their saviour.. Everything else is really good but writing has some serious issues.. There have been little development in the over-all plot. Most importantly it feels like the writer touches various mental issues on the surface..I can't help but compare it with Its Okay That's love which had a similar genre but the writer managed to keep me hooked untill the last episode and brilliantly dealt with psychological issues.

Well, both dramas have fluff and filler episodes. I enjoying both style. Whether they touch in surface or in depth, it is quite subjective for me. But I do agree on Pastry's comment about the hospital crew members. I accepted it as in dramaland but hopefully not really represented the real one.

Tv ratings in Korea are dismal across the board. It bothers me because ad revenue, product placements matter a lot and audience for both is in Korea. We need this industry to thrive because we need Korean ent industry to invest in drama. I am always hoping for at least 2-3 big winners in each season. If the dramas do not do well in Korean TV, the industry will change and I am not sure if I want that...

In the end, their primary audience is Koreans. It is great that the hallyu stars bring dramas to international market but Korean drama production can not afford to have hallyu stars like LMH, KSH in every drama. There are another 100 dramas that do not have them need revenue. To me this is a sign of something. Perhaps, there has to be an industry that caters to what Koreans like and get those good ratings so production houses can continue to make money to invest in new drama and all our fav stars get work.

How boring will it be when only dramas based on super stars air.

Good insight as I almost forgotten about it. Like I mentioned in previous post, I am glad that Kdrama is getting more spots at international platform (Netflix, Iqiyi, Viu, etc.) however your point does carry some weight too. In the end, the SK netz itself will driven their own ent industry.

Yeah, it will be boring too as I already abandon LMH, JCW, LDW, let alone many idols (hahaha). Some power house actor/ actress may not be able to save current drama. I mostly quite picky on certains type of drama, hence the directive creativity and good storyline are mostly makes me stay, whether they have a popular actor/actress or not.

This KYJ and JCW fans for sure have an inferiority complex. They always compare BR to IONTBO when both dramas are not direct competitors of each other. In my honest opinion, BR's ratings are only average for a Fri-Sat block. SBS used to peak double digits in this timeslot but BR's ratings are dismal because it is already more than half way but ratings are still single digit. They must hit 12% peak to be considered a mid hit.

I'm just gonna quit complaining and start a prayer circle for IOTNBO to get higher ratings. The cast and crew deserves a nice double digits ratings. And with this week's cliffhanger I'll pray for at least 8.7% for next Saturday.
