Park Min-young, Song Kang courted for office romance drama

Park Min-young, Song Kang

Song Kang (Sweet Home) is on fire this year! Even with Navillera and Love Alarm 2 on the horizon, he’s a workhorse, already thinking about his next project. Recently, Namoo Entertainment announced that its actors Song Kang and Park Min-young (I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day) have received offers to star in PD Cha Young-hoon’s (When the Camellia Blooms) upcoming drama, Office Romance Cruelty.

If Song Kang and Park Min-young confirm, they’ll play two co-workers at the National Meteorological Agency. The drama is supposed to depict a workplace romance that’s “hotter than a tropical night and more unpredictable than local flooding.”

The character Song Kang has been offered is named Lee Shi-woo, a weathercaster that handles breaking news. Park Min-young’s character, Jin Ha-kyung, is a chic city gal that handles general forecasting. She’s very thorough about accomplishing her goals. She even passed the tough 5-level meteorological civil service exam in one go.

However, her separation of her work and personal life is one of her greatest weaknesses. Because of her strict no-friends, no-romances at work policy, she’s perceived as prickly and cold, and she is treated as an outsider amongst her co-workers.

JTBC drama Office Romance Cruelty, directed by PD Cha Young-hoon and written by Sun Young, has yet to announce an air date.

I was about to say that I didn’t like the age gap, but the I remembered that SKJ is just one year older than Song Kang and that PMY always has amazing chemistry with all her male leads.
I like the PD, but not the writer.
What will I do?

Uuuuhh, I'm so tired and there are so many new dramas announcements I mixed up two. Someone mentioned in Discord another one by Radiant Office director and I mixed them up. Forget this beanie, she's had a rough day...

SKJ seems older to me, physically. Song Kang has been playing teenagers or young adults so maybe that is coloring my view, but I can't picture them together.

Me neither. The visual age difference is too big. It'd be way too distracting and not flattering to her. She'd look like those actors, who get older, but keep playing with actresses of the same, if not younger, age.

PMY is one of my favorite FLs and, as you say, she works amazing alchemy with basically all of her co-stars. But this pairing seems strange to me. I know SKJ was a good bit younger, and he pulled off Eun-seob with amazing gravitas and maturity, but I remember feeling like that was a fortuitous mix of his ability, good direction and very solid writing for the character. I'll watch, because PMY, but I'm not exactly thrilled.

I am all for this! I was worried that it would be like Park Min Young's other corporate roles, i.e. "Her Private Life," "What's Wrong with Secretary Kim," but the weather forecasting storyline has the potential to be interesting. ALSO, I appreciate every opportunity to see Park Min Young acting and SLAYING pant/skirtsuits! 😍

PMY seems to be getting typecasted now. I feel kind of blank about this drama. It could either be very generic or they could turn the genre on its head ala Run On. The premise just seems so uninteresting rn

I loved PMY in Weather - found the role really showed her range. I'm also hoping for more of a Run On scenario, as I'm just in general enjoy those types of stories more these days (though anything that can make me laugh is very welcome, too).

I agree. My complaint isn’t even with her age (I didn’t even know how old they both were tbh) but just the fact that her roles seem to be bleeding into each other. Rom com is fine but at least make it inventive and exciting. This premise seems so generic it could describe any rom com

Another rom-com starring PMY is a bit too much. Her roles in Whats Wrong with Secretary Kim and Her Private Life already draws enough comparisons. I thought with Weather... she is diversifying into different genres but I am not sure about this.

Tbvh I hope it's more interesting than Run On, as hard as I tried, that drama was really bland to me.

I'm tired of office romances. I also can't picture these two together.

I guess office romance is the easiest way to make sure the leads have maximum interaction w each other. That or cohabiting. But yeah irl office romance is just not that easy or ideal.

I like PMY, but they keep giving her the babies, lol. She was so great with KJW(who is grown man sexy), so I have no idea why they keep casting her with so much younger. To be fair she tends to have great chemistry with everyone, including SKJ, but we can give her at least someone in his 30s. I will still check it out because I really like her, but hmmm.

I have the same thought. I was really excited about PMY's return but I'm disappointed with this casting. They could have easily found a male who is around her age. I like the actors separately but together seems a bit odd. at least for me.

I'd love to see her with Lee Seung-gi. They had great chemistry on Busted!, and they're well-matched in age.

I like this, but has he ever done a rom-com? I can't think of any, but at least he would be age appropriate and interesting.

It doesn't have to be a rom-com, honestly. My favorite PMY stuff is Weather and Healer, so I'd be more than happy to see her try her hand at action, or maybe they'd work well together in a slice of life?

@carlybisek, good point, lol. I totally agree.

One of my favorite OTPs ever. Cute and sexy.

Another smoking hot couple please.

The meteorology angle seems interesting, but otherwise the description is sort of boring! Interested to see how they would implement the drama.

I feel like I've seen this already. And Park Min-young... She does only Romance/Rom-com?
I can totally picture how she is like in this drama. I'll pass.
And I don't like the age gap either.
I love the PD and Song Kang though...

Park Min-young has done several rom-com, but she has also done other genres such as historical (Queen for Seven Days/Dr. Jin) and thriller (Remember).

I know, but they are like 5 years ago? (I know Dr. Jin was 9 years ago)
Last three dramas were all romance genre and her new project is another romance. Like other beanie said, it seems like she is getting type casted?

I think it's important to remember that there's sadly an expiration date on rom-com roles for actors, especially women. Once you get into your late 30s they become fewer, and once you hit 40? You can basically forget about it.

It wouldn't surprise me if Park Min-young is just eager to take these roles while they're still being offered to her. There will probably be more opportunities for "serious" roles in the future. Let the girl do her rom-coms if that's what she wants to do!

agreed! Also, we like to think these well-liked actresses are swimming in great offers for roles, but it's possible she doesn't get many. Jung Ryeo-won gave an interview after Witch's Court a few years ago. She mentioned how people just assumed she was swimming in offers and her hiatus was just her figuring out her next step, but the reality was that not many offers were coming in. Older actresses had warned her about offers drying up once you hit your mid-30s, and it was true.

I did wish Park Min-young would pick up a sageuk this year. She's one of those actresses who feel at home in both sageuk and in modern type dramas. Maybe in 2022!

Park Mon-young was at her best in I'LL FIND YOU ON A BEAUTIFUL DAY which was not really a rom-com but rather a family drama. Many of her shows do very well indeed- so her 'policy' of strict professionalism seems to have paid off.

However, the title for this show has me a bit worried.

she's great in both bubbly and serious roles so it's not that she doesn't have range but she just seems to like this genre. It's also unfair to say that all she ever does is rom-coms. Yes she does romance but not all of them are rom-coms just two of them by definition. At least she has a different character in this drama so that could be something new to look forward to.

I will not call drawing a line between personal and professional life as a weakness especially when it comes to romance though no friendships could be far fetched but can save you a lot of trouble and trust issues at work.

Otherwise the plot sounds meh already. Though I know PMY can generate a good chemistry with even a pole, might check out for that.

I'm a bit dumbfounded by this pairing, it seems her co-star keeps getting younger each drama. That's not to say I dislike her being cast with younger guys but this seems a bit too much. PMY is a chemistry fairy and visually they're both pretty but I'm still unsure of Song Kang though I did like him in sweet home. Here's to hoping that this random pair will somehow bring their own magic to it.

I enjoy both actors so as long as they have good chemistry I am full steam boating ahead my friends :)

I am a little surprised about the amount of people taking issue with this age gap - he's in his mid twenties and she's in her mid-thirties which sounds like their both adults.

If SK were in his early twenties I would likely similarly feel uncomfortable with such a large age gap because I associate that timeframe as someone just beginning to explore adulthood - but 26 is not that age imo.

Oh well, there goes my wish for PMY to be cast opposite Kim Seon ho. They are both the same age and the chemistry might prove to be cracktastic. Maybe next time.

excited for PMY, apprehensive b/c of song kang. PMY could have chemistry with a cardboard box, and i don't think she's being typecast considering her last drama was When The Weather Is Fine, which was far from an office romance.

song kang on the other hand...frankly he was terrible in love alarm. i am also unimpressed with his bit in sweet home since his character was quite passive and didn't do much. we'll see how this goes.

Park Min Young!! If she's in, I'm in, no matter who her acting partner is.

I haven't seen Song Kang much so I'm undecided about him. Like I watched Sweet Home but like very erratically because I aggressively fast-forwarded through any scene with LJW and a few episodes in, I got bored/annoyed with the plot, so I was just skipping to the parts with Lee Shi Young or Park Gyu Young. So I don't remember much of his acting lol... whoops.

I hope this will be interesting but I highly doubt it will. Rom-coms lately have be quite boring and nothing ever happened. It like the took the drama out of Kdrama, I need some spice to keep me invested.
