Premiere Watch: Lovers of the Red Sky, Human Disqualification

In our second batch of new dramas, much like last week we have two shows that couldn’t be more different: a fantasy sageuk, and somber-looking human drama. The former looks light and frothy, and stars a hero with dreamy reddish eyes. The latter looks dark, deep, and depressing, and stars a hero with dreamy long hair.

Lovers of the Red Sky

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Fusion sageuk, fantasy, romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Is there anyone out there that doesn’t love Kim Yoo-jung in a sageuk? In Red Sky, she’s donning beautiful hanbok again, this time paired up with Ahn Hyo-seop. If nothing else, this sageuk drama will be a feast for the eyes, and I’m not just talking about the pretty leads and costumes. The drama’s promos have been dreamy and ethereal — and I guess that perfectly fits the drama’s fantasy story. Kim Yoo-jung plays a painter with supernatural powers, and Ahn Hyo-seop is some sort of astronomer with mysterious reddish eyes. Red eyes are usually the territory of bad guys and darkness, so I’m curious how our story will handle everything from the eyes to the romance to the fantasy.

Human Disqualification

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Human, melo
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: It’s no secret that this is one of my most hotly anticipated shows. The tone looks quite somber and heavy, as it tells the story of Jeon Do-yeon and Ryu Joon-yeol going through dark chapters in their lives. But it also has one of my favorite storytelling elements: the bond that develops between two people from different stages of life who find they understand each other on a deep and almost spiritual level. At least that’s what the drama is promising, and what I’m hanging all my anticipation on. Well, that and Ryu Joon-yeol’s gorgeous long hair.

Human Disqualification is a mood show, and I don't know if I'm in the mood.

Days are getting darker and shorter again in my corner of the world, right in time for some melo watch. Bring it on Human Disqualification!

Pretty sure I’ve seen some promo where Ahn Hyo-seop’s character also had long hair, so we might just be getting two dreamy heroes with long manes of glory. The more, the better.

Oh, and I’m looking forward to the dramas too. Definitely not just the hair.

i don't care about the Human Disqualification storyline much, dark as it sounds -- but honestly, i'm just in it strictly for Joon Yeol's long hair also!

I'm personally taking an unusual - if possibly short term - detour into shallow for this one.

The both of them look good and very different! I hope this sageuk will be good because for now, I was disapointed by 2021 sageuks. I hope I won't have a SLS because I prefer GM as an actor than AYS...

Human Disqualification sounds sad and depressing but with those actors, I don't care!

The last time I saw red was in Nevertheless. Jae eun's red, moist lips and their terrifying close-ups led to quite a few nightmares for me. Give me red eyes over red lips any day.

Lost/Human disqualification is the show I am most excited about. I will check out the Lovers show, but Lost is the one for me.

Even after watching Reply 1988, I never got the Ryu Joon-yeol appeal, but the long hair is really working for me. Human Disqualification looks depressing, but I'd watch it just for the hair. I really don't want to subscribe to iqiyi though.

I went years without watching a single sageuk. I don't know if I can handle another one this year.

Watched the second episode. Kim Yoo-jung is really beautiful- as my wife noted (again). The rules of this fantasy world version of Joseon are a little confusing at this point but over all we enjoyed it a lot.

I really hope that Human Disqualification will be picked up later by Viki like My Roommate is a Gumiho. I'll be spamming their request a tv show survey in the meantime.

Am I the only one who does NOT have a thing for long hair?

You're not the only one. Covering the ears, yes. Shoulder length is too reminiscent of ABBA for me. Love the music, hate the style.

Literally the only thing I find interesting about this drama is his hair. I'm just not a melo drama kind of gal, but I do like some long hair.

Having just watched episode 1 of Red Sky, I can't say it was light and fluffy. I'll suspend judgement though until I see the next episode. I'm hoping for some beautiful painting. Saimdang Memoir of Colours opened my eyes to the magic of painting in this period. It all seemed surprisingly modern. I'm hoping for some of the same again.
