[Drama Chat] When dramas hit your wallet

We can pretend that PPL doesn’t affect us, or that seeing an awesome jacket on a drama heroine doesn’t give us outfit envy, but when it comes down to it, dramas do hit our wallets. From time to time. In small ways. You know, not like I want to go out and buy a top-of-the-line Dyson stick vacuum or the latest folding Samsung smartphone or anything. Heh.

PPL is admittedly effective, but it’s not the only way dramas hit our wallets. Sometimes it’s just a little detail of the show that captures us — and then, buying a new K-drama-esque headband or a knock-off designer coat or even a teapot (true story!) can not only satisfy the itchy fingers in a way that doesn’t break the bank, but can also bring a little K-drama magic into real life.

How have K-drama hit your wallet? What have you bought solely because of a K-drama? (Don’t worry, this is a judgment-free zone.)

Let the chatting begin!

PPL never works better. Our family got two Dysons. XD As we're living in a dusty country, the Dysons work well and help us a lot when we have to clean our house. Being able to vacuum small dust particles on our beds effectively is one of the best things we love about them.

There are many other things Kdrama I added into my life. I was in a phase of scrunchies while and after watching Start-Up (TT - TT Ex-BB). I had Korean buffet when I had that crave after watching some scenes in Kdramas when people start eating some Kdrama dishes in a tasty way. I almost got myself that Kahi balm stick because Kim Go-eun always applies it in TKEM no matter where she is in the drama *coughs while being on a stakeout coughs* *coughs SFL also applies it on MOO-HAK's face in Dali and Gamjatang coughs* , but thank goodness I didn't do that.

I don't think PPL really works on me...

The clothes's style suits them but I can't really imagine myself with it. Objects like phones, vacuums, etc. are pretty expensive and if mines work well, I don't want to change. I don't have a big interest in cosmectics, I like Korean brands but I don't choose because I saw it in a KDrama.

I think the only thing I could be tempted by, it's their chicken! But there is no place where I live. Subway, Macdo are pratical sometimes but it's not an influence from KDrama. Their usual meals are the thing that interest me the most, I want to test everything.

I like to see Swiss brands in Kdrama on the other side. It makes me smile to think Swiss products reach KDrama world.

I remember the PPL of TAG Heuer watches from Switzerland in SUITS (2018). In episode 11 Kang-seok (Jang Dong-gun) gave Yeon-woo (Park Hyung-sik) a beautiful TH watch to remember his first successful solo case.
(Aside. I searched Amazon for the watch I thought PHS received and later I kept getting emails promoting TH watches to me lol. Totally out of my price range. I thought, “who do they think I am, Park Hyung-sik”?)

I am not really PPL-afflicted either, but (1) whenever I see a fountain pen used, I HAVE to identify the brand and model; (2) my wallet still gets killed by the embarrassing number of streaming subscriptions I pay for each month just to access k-dramas.

Oh I tried it! It was pretty good. But sadly, my memory of this night is more about the big earthquake that happened during the meal and once again after.

The last summer, I was in Salzburg and they have a great Korean restaurant that makes fried chicken. We went twice and took it twice :D I can eat other meals where I live like Korean BBQ.

When I had chimek in Korea for the first time in 2015, the chicken was served with 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream?! It was really weird but strangely tasty at the same time. I'm pretty sure it was just that particular restaurant that we went to because I've never seen it again since.

Last night while watching the Thai F4 I saw an elaborate KFC commercial during the show that pretended to actually be part of the show--a several act romance subplot revolving around a mutual love of greasy fried chicken.
It was pretty funny, but it didn't make me want to buy KFC. That was my first fast food job as a teen, and it's a classic "having worked there I never want to eat there" scenario.
I've tried several recipes for korean style fried chicken, though, as a result of the constant "fried chicken and beer" meals in kdramas, and even the recipes produced delicious chicken. I'll bet its even better in-country.

Such a timely post. It has hit my wallet recently. I have mostly managed to steer clear of kdrama merch until Our Beloved Summer came along. This is not so much PPL but on merch, if there is a difference. I recently purchased the OBS OST since I love the drama and OST so much. I love the OST and everything that came with it. I haven't bought any products from Korean PPL, but I do want to try their coffee mix sometime, despite my hate for instant coffee because they make the process look visually appealing even though the end result might look like a murky water. I mean, most dramas on an average spend atleast 10 secs on the instant coffee by having someone with beautifully manicured nails tear open two packets in one swift pull and pour the contents into a mug, mix and take a sip, post which they give an expression of having solved or dwell deep into their character problems.

Oh my god. I have bought whole outfits and statement clothes because of kdramas lol just take all my money T___T. Jeon Ji Hyun, Jeon Do Yeon, Shin Mina, Gong Hyo Jin - I swear their stylists get me every time with their outfits. Pretty much all of Cheon Song Yi's looks and outfits in YFAS are iconic to me. Sometimes I do get obsessed enough to try and find an exact piece they wear, but mostly I think they enable me to wear things in real life that I wouldn't have dared to pull off otherwise (hot pink lipstick, oversized leather jackets, puffers, purple pants!) and it's fun to feel like I'm channeling the character's aura in a way :')

I thought i was pretty immune to PPL (Subway PPL worked the total opposite on me , i started hating it), until I saw a neck pillow in Start up worn during work. Idk if I've seen that use of a neck pillow before in any dranna but in real life I've always associated it with travel. It helped in wfh and that finally lead to two other people in my family buying it for work. Soon after I also caved in to ramyun which I've been avoiding for quite a while. I guess my intestines are better off not eating them. Skincare has been a staple in my life but that's not due to dramas rather the influence of kbeauty in general. I've never been interested in clothes or shoes unless they stand out like GHJ's outfits do but that's all. I never want to buy them. However, The Z Flip did catch my eye but that is obnoxiously expensive and phones are one thing that I don't feel like spending a lot on anyway as my use is barely limited to this site and one more app on the internet.

I can't afford any of the PPL shown in any of the shows (granted I do own a Dyson vacuum, but that was an unrelated purchase) but what ALWAYS gets me is the food. Jajangmyeon is on heavy rotation in our household, as is rabokki (as I can never decide between the two). I've never had an americano until watching Korean shows. Maybe I need to add flavored syrup because I don't know how Koreans drink watered-down coffee. While I've definitely taken cues from dramas for clothing styles, the one specific product I have purchased because I saw it on a drama is NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment in Warm Leatherette from Live Up to Your Name. It is the perfect rich berry tone and does not move after applied. I had already loved the brand's products before but this specific color and product caught my attention in the drama when Kim Ah-joong applied it to Kim Nam-gil in that cute lil date scene. I looked it up pretty much right away and bought it that week, and have repurchased this color and others since then. I remember that! I get really bad hangovers after moderate drinking - say, anything over 2 small beers -, so I drink very seldom and can't really fathom how people are able to go to work after alcohol binging like what we see in kdramas, because if I did that I'd probably end up in the ER 😂
Maybe all their anti-hangover stuff is effective and we're missing out on it. Still, I guess it's better this way 🙌

Aside from the need to pause a show while I make instant ramen (or go out for tteokbokki—true story), I was only influenced to buy something non-food related from a k-drama once:
I’ve always loved classic sneakers from the 70s and 80s and when I watched Wok of Love a few years ago I kept focusing on Junho’s Nikes. I couldn’t get them (or him?) out of my head and ended up custom ordering a pair of classic Nikes before I finished the show 😆. I love them though!

I used to think I was immune to advertising, but Korea knows how to get past my defenses, lol. It's mostly books for me. Koreans LOVE books (I cannot underline that enough!) and often there is a book or a poet who gets a bit of product placement. I've got a whole shelf of Korean poetry now...

Not brand specific, but I've seen enough effects of Korean skincare compared to western results that if I'm going to go out and buy new skincare products, they sure as heck need to be made in South Korea. :D

I suppose I notice whenever I happen to have a product made in Korea. I didn't buy the washer in the house I am renting...but I sure as heck notice it's a Samsung (it even sings the same little song when it's done that I've heard in dramas. It's also the best washer I've ever had, no I am not being paid for this product placement statement, lol.) If both items I'm considering are the same in price and quality, er...yeah, I'd probably pick the Korean one.

I used to be immune by obvious PPL. And like some of you said, even disgusted by Subway PPL ... But I clearly not immune to soft PPL ... I always see something I like or I want in kdrama be it
1) fashion style (Seo Yea Ji outfits in It's Okay not to be Okay, or IU in HdL, working outfits, hanbok)
2) a character personality: hard working, positive personality (like Kim Tae Ri in TFTO) ,
3) Korean Food ( example : I want a try sogobchang (grilled beef intestine LOL), make doenjang etc.)

These days I'm into Korean furniture & interior design style.
I keep on searching the sofa brand from Thirty Nine, the one Cha young and Mi Jo's boyfriend have. I also search for Mi Jo's egg chair.
I also want to live in a hanok style house or have a Korean "patio"//"balcony" (indoor glass house that look like a balcony ) (tou can see it nowadays in Park Min Young appartment in L&W Forecast)

Conclusion: so far only Korean Food broke my wallet

I have tried "dried red dates" jujubes after seeing several ladies gulp them... and jujubes are soooo good ! It's a totally new fruit for me (I live in Europe) and I didn't know jujubes exist before dramas :)
I am trying to find kimchi.
So as many others, it's the food.

Do you watch cdramas? I haven't seen anyone munch dried jujubes in kdramas but they are aplenty in the cdramaland.

Yes I have started cdrama last december.
The romances are tropey, but that's part of the fun for me. And I find myself draggued in cdramaland more and more. I like that the episodes are shorter, the cute teams. Kdrama have more attention to details and richer characters caracterisation. I'm less emotionnaly involved in cdramas.
I have not found excellent actors such as Ji Sung or Lee Joong Gi, or masterpieces such as Healer, The master's sun or Hello monster. However i greatly enjoyed Love at night, I am the years you are the star and Hello the sharpshooter.

PPLs definitely worked on me 😆
Maxim and Kanu coffee, Citron and jujube teas, ramyeon that I don't eat lol, Kbeauty products, Atelier cologne, Neoflam pots and pans, Samsung S21 Ultra are the only products I can think of this moment but I may have purchased more 😆 🤣 😂

For me, I was obsessed with the gentle monster sunglasses used in CLOY. I very nearly got a pair before I was rudely reminded I very often lose my sunnies..
Another ppl that hits my wallet is make up/beauty products. I can't remember which drama now but I got some lipsticks and creams coz I saw them on a kdrama knowing full well it was ppl

I bought a pair of Golden Goose sneakers after seeing Kim Soo-hyun wearing a pair in You From Another Star. And after watching a number of sageuks, I bought fabric to make my own hanbok. I'll take it with me when I visit SK later this year, because it sounds like I may get in to visit some palaces for free if I wear hanbok. :-D
