News bites: April 23, 2022

  • The promos have begun for TVING’s next mystery-thriller Rose Mansion. Starring Im Ji-yeon (Welcome 2 Life) and Yoon Kyun-sang (Class of Lies), the drama is slotted to release on May 13 with film director Chang Gam-dok (Forest, RESET) at the helm and scripts by Yoo Gap-yeol (The Chase). [MBC]

  • Junho (The Red Sleeve Cuff) and Yoon-ah (Hush) have been paired for a new rom-com called King the Land (working title). The broadcaster has not yet been announced, but writer Chun Sung-il (All of Us Are Dead) is listed as the creator and the drama’s current focus is finalizing casting. [SBS]
  • Another confirmed pairing is Jung Il-woo (Bossam: Steal the Fate) and Kwon Yuri (Bossam: Steal the Fate), who are reuniting for ENA drama Good Job. Releasing later this year, the story has Jung living a double life as a chaebol CEO/private detective, while Kwon is a temp worker who is hiding a secret ability. [YTN]

Han Ji-hyun, Bae In-hyuk, Kim Hyun-jin, Jang Gyu-ri, Lee Eun-saem, Yang Dong-geun

  • SBS’s new campus drama Cheer Up is set to release towards the end of 2022. The ensemble cast includes the fresh-faced Han Ji-hyun (Penthouse 3), Bae In-hyuk (At a Distance, Spring Is Green), Kim Hyun-jin (Can You Deliver Time?), Fromis 9’s Jang Gyu-ri (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), and Lee Eun-saem (All of Us Are Dead), as well as the more experienced (and very talented) Yang Dong-geun (Human Disqualification). Production is in the hands of writer Cha Hae-won (VIP) and PD Han Tae-sub (Stove League). [SBS]
  • Striking while the iron is still hot, Nam Joo-hyuk (Twenty Five Twenty One) is reviewing offers for his next role, and one strong contender is the role of a dark hero in a webtoon adaptation called Vigilante. [News1]
  • Over on KBS, planning has begun for the next weekender Three Brave Siblings (roughly translated), which is set to follow It’s Beautiful Now. The lead role has been offered to the criminally underrated Im Joo-hwan (The Spies Who Loved Me), who’ll play opposite Lee Hana (Voice 4) if he accepts. [Sports Donga]

Im Joo-hwan

  • Yang Se-jong (My Country: The New Age) is considering his first post-army project and is up to join Suzy (Start-Up) in Netflix’s upcoming The Girl Downstairs. With PD Lee Jung-hyo (Crash Landing on You) attached to direct, filming is set to start later this year once casting is completed. [Dispatch]
  • On the other hand, filming has wrapped for Netflix’s Somebody, and Kim Young-kwang (Hello? It’s Me!) has already started work on his next drama Tell Me It’s Love. The new revenge story is written by Kim Ga-eun and Lee Sung-kyung (Shooting Stars) is currently in talks for the female lead. [Newsen]
  • Netflix’s upcoming The Sound of Magic dropped another teaser this week along with stills featuring our main cast: Ji Chang-wook (Lovestruck in the City), Choi Sung-eun (Beyond Evil), and Hwang In-yub (True Beauty). Premiering soon on May 6, scripts were penned by Kim Min-jung (Moonlight Drawn by Clouds) with PD Kim Sung-yoon (Itaewon Class, Moonlight Drawn by Clouds) behind the camera. [Star News (1), (2)]

King the Land doesn't sound like anything special, but Junho had to have been inundated with offers. Hopefully, he saw something in it worth picking.

Im Joo-hwan deserves lead roles. A successful weekend drama can do a lot for a career, so I'm rooting for him. I've never warmed to Lee Hana.

This may be just the ticket for Im Joo-hwan. A weekender gives fabulous exposure to a much bigger audience and over a longer period of time.

1. Yoon Kyun-sang in a drama? It’s been a while. Although that poster… let’s hope it’s a Business Proposal scenario and not something else.

2. *Deep, deep sigh*. Did Junho really have to choose this? Out of the dozens of offers he’s surely getting? His costar and the writer doesn’t exactly inspire confidence either.

3. THE REUNION I DESERVE!! Maybe we’ll even get a kiss scene this time. A girl can hope. And count down to the very minute until the first episode comes out.

4. Bae In-hyuk in a leading role? I’m sold. The supporting cast is great too. Looking forward to this.

5. While street-roaming vigilante doesn’t really suit Nam Joo-hyuk IMO, if he can pull this off, then he could become a bona-fide A lister. After Twenty Five Twenty One, I’m rooting for him.

6. Maybe there’s some justice in dramaland after all. This better be the most successful weekender ever so that Im Joo-hwan finally gets the success he deserves.

7. While I’m not the biggest fan of Suzy as an actress, I do like idols playing idols so this casting works for me. Excited to see Yang Se-jong back. So many campus dramas these days.

8. More Kim Young-kwang is always welcome.

9. I really hope this is good. The plot sounds right up my alley, now it’s just about the execution.

Why were so many of these also my exact or close to my exact reactions lmao.

1. Reservations about the premise and writer, but also Yoon Kyun Sang.

2. I like Junho a lot, but there are people around that like him more, so I don't really care about this right now, and will decide when it airs if I feel like picking it up or not. The Writer doesn't interest me, nor does the premise.

3. Thissssssssssssssss~ The Reunion WE deserve haha.

4. On the one hand, I'm glad he's getting a lead role. I like him. On the other hand, it just reminds me of all the people who are still waiting for their overdue and much more deserved Lead Roles... lol. I'm sure everyone can guess who I'm thinking about here.

5. Legit, my first thought was "that doesn't sound like it would suit him, though...". I'm rooting for him but,... eh we'll see. He still has to accept.

8. Your exact comment, repeated word for word.

Honestly, I think many people on this site probably share very similar opinions to ours lmao.

Also let me guess, Lee Soo-hyuk? Because he’s the one who immediately comes to mind for extremely overdue lead roles. Or Kim Seul-gi for the ladies. Seriously I mourn the lack of dramas being led by them every day.

oH well I guess that wasn't as easy to guess as I thought, both of those, also yes hahaha but no, mainly my boy Kwak Dong Yeon lmao

Kwak Dong-yeon is a good choice too. Baffling how he keeps playing second fiddle to actors far less experienced or straight up not as good as him. Dang, I probably should’ve guessed him too.

I adore Junho and I've watched everything he has done but Yoo-nah is bland and basic with capital B. She isn't interesting at all as an actress, so I might pass on this.

Excited for Sound of Magic!!!

A lot of people seem to be sceptical about Jun-ho's new drama but I'll be rooting for him 😅. I have only seen Yoona in K2. I hope everyone is pleasantly surprised

I'm rooting with you! I've only ever seen Yoona in Hyori's Homestay where she was very bright and capable. She established a sweet friendship with the judo team guests and supportive collaboration with Park Bo-gum. For some strange reason they were dubbed "The Deer Couple" in this very popular show.
I've read on other sites that Yoona is greatly admired by the 2PM guys. So maybe Junho decided on a light rom-com after the heavy emotion of Red Sleeve? Can't say as I blame him.

Yes, some of us are still recovering from TRS, so a light rom-com isn't a bad idea 😅.

2. If I read the linked news article correctly - Junho as a chaebol, with some ditzy FL? Ugh. Such a disappointing choice. Let's hope it ignores or subverts every trope and expectation - and gets a better title.

9. I'm on the fence about The Sound of Magic. I want Ji Chang-wook to be wonderful in something wonderful, but this sounds like it has the potential to be massively cringe-y if it isn't done just right.

The things i have to read about Yoona on this website but at the same time couldn't exactly argue about 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲

Although in my last, yet not quite strong attempt, to argue, in her defense.... Her movies seems to be doing much better (by this i mean her doing much better in movies)

The Sound of Magic has a nice poster, teaser, main cast (Choi Sung-eun, I like her in Beyond evil) and in Netflix. Such a good combo to give it a try.

Cheer Up seems promising because it's got the writer of VIP and the PD of Stove League, and both shows are very high on my drama faves list. Plus I like the cast.

Junho, Junho. I want to see you in another drama but it's got Yoon-ah and I'm just not feeling it 😩.
