News bites: April 16, 2022

  • MBC’s supernatural comedy Showtime Begins! premieres in just one week and I love Jin Ki-joo’s (Oh! Samkwang Villa) look in the newly released still. Also starring Park Hae-jin (Old School Intern and Jung Jun-ho (True Beauty), scripts were penned by Ha Yoon-ah (Mystic Pop-up Bar) with directing done collaboratively by PD Jung Sang-hee and PD Lee Hyung-min (My Dangerous Wife, Chocolate). [MBC]

  • Kim Hye-yoon (Snowdrop) is in talks for a new webtoon adaptation called Us at 29 (roughly translated). The rom-com is still in the planning stages and is expected to release on one of the streaming services. In the meantime, Kim will begin filming in May for a new movie remake called Ditto alongside Yeo Jin-gu (Beyond Evil), Jo Yi-hyun (All of Us Are Dead), and Na In-woo (River Where the Moon Rises). [JTBC, Osen]
  • tvN’s Drama Stage is returning this year under a new name: O’PENing. Still focusing on shorter stories, the new title alludes to their goal to stay open and creative, continuing to experiment with different genres and storytelling formats. O’PENing’s 2022 lineup is already in production and Han Sun-hwa (Work Later, Drink Now) announced she will be starring in film director Kim Hyun-tak’s (I) vignette, First Glance. [Newsen, YTN]

  • Actors Kim Mu-yeol (Grid) and Kim Sae-ron (The Great Shaman Ga Doo-shim) have been added to SBS’s upcoming drama Trolley, joining Kim Hyun-joo (Hellbound) and Park Hee-soon (My Name). Airing later this year, PD Kim Moon-gyo is at the helm with writing done by Ryu Bo-ra (Do You Like Brahms). [Newsen]
  • On KBS, Kim Seul-gi (Find Me in Your Memory) has joined the cast of Love According to Law. Her character is a tough police officer named Han Se-yeon and is childhood friends with both Lee Seung-gi (Mouse) and Le Se-young (The Red Sleeve Cuff). Written by Im Ji-eun (One Night) and directed by PD Lee Eun-jin (Chief Kim), the air date is currently set for August 29. [MBC]
  • Rising star Lee Se-hee (Young Lady and Gentleman) is becoming a prosecutor for KBS, playing opposite D.O. (100 Days My Prince) in True Sword Battle. Penned by Im Young-bin (Sketch) with PD Kim Sung-ho (Move to Heaven) behind the camera, the drama is aiming to broadcast later this year. [KBS]

  • The melodrama Eve has finally been slotted into tvN’s schedule and is set to premiere in May, following Murderer’s Shopping List. The drama stars Seo Ye-ji (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), Park Byung-eun (Human Disqualification), Yoo Sun (Hush), and Lee Sang-yub (On the Verge of Insanity); production is led by writer Yoon Young-mi (Nice Witch, Birth of a Beauty) and director Park Bong-seop (Steal My Heart). [Osen]
  • Speaking of Murderer’s Shopping List, promos have been ramping up ahead of the drama’s premiere on April 27. Featuring leads Lee Kwang-soo (Live), Seolhyun (Awaken), and Jin Hee-kyung (Was It Love), the newest teasers can be found here and here. [Newsen]

Love According to Law is shaping up to have a fantastic cast, very excited.

Even more excited about Love According to the Law now. Somebody needs to give Kim Seul-gi a proper lead role though.

Right? Kim Seul-gi has so much talent and charisma, it's a kdrama crime that she isn't being offered lead roles left, right and center.

YES! Still waiting for that sequel with Doo Joon. Or at least a scene together in another project.

I'll probably start most of these, then drop several after about on day one.

One cannot casually skip a show written by the writer of Mystic, even if a lot of the credit has to go to the person who wrote the webtoon. Always must at least start anything with Kim Seul-gi or Kim Sae-ron. As for Seo Ye-ji's show, the cynic in me wonders if she might have a boyfriend who forbids her to get friendly with the male cast. Because, you know.

I think the comment about Seo ye ji is in bad taste, take time to read on all that has happened, and her personal life doesn't interfere with her ability to do her work properly. She is talented and knows how to pick a good drama script

@lordcobol 's poking fun at the absurdity of the "scandal" with which the Korean gossip press saddled Seo Yea ji is less about her than the way Korean media covers its celebrities.

As for Seo Ye-ji herself, I'll definitely check out Eve only because she's in it. I kind of wish it wasn't a melodrama, since from what I've seen she's a great comic actress. I liked her in Lawless lawyer, but her performance in Its Okay to Not be Okay is one of my all-time favorites in a k-romance, both hilarious and seductive.

I’ve always thought that if she appeared in that character in real life, sashaying down the street with Elaine’s OST playing in the background, young men in her path would collapse to their knees, utterly overwhelmed by her powerful sexiness. (Older men like myself would be immune, because for us only women over 40 have that same overwhelming charisma, and then for me, its only my wife that makes me collapse to my knees, although sometimes just because its my turn to clean the bathroom. )

LOL!

I don't follow the S. Korean celebrity press much, and have only the vaguest of memories about this particular scandal, but it seemed particularly absurd that it blew up as much as it did. I was just embarrassed for both of them, and think it's probably best they parted ways. But I didn't see how any of what happened should have carried over into their ability to book work. I think they're both great actors and hope their future projects are enjoyable for me to watch.

- Kim Hye-yoon! Kim Hye-yoon! Kim Hye-yoon!
I am waiting very patiently for The Girl on the Bulldozer to show up at my local foreign film cinema or an available streaming service.

- Kim Seul-gi! Kim Seul-gi! Kim Seul-gi!
Would prefer her in a leading role but I'll take and little crumb I can get.

- Really looking forward to Showtime Begins, I loved Mystic Pop-Up Bar and honestly I could watch Jin Ki-joo watch paint dry so long as she made enough faces at it. I haven't really enjoyed many of Park Hae-jin's projects but I'm very hopeful with this one as it seems to be quite a different role for him!

1. Jin Ki-joo is stunning. And it’s the new work of the writer of Mystic Pop-up Bar, so there’s no way I’m not checking this out.

2. More Kim Hye-yoon is always welcome. She’s popular, but somehow feels underrated as well.

3. Interested to see what these experiments on genre and format will bring about. Shorter dramas are good for these kinds of projects.

4. The more I hear about Trolley, the better it sounds. That cast!

5. I am willing to personally fund an entire kdrama by myself just to get Kim Seul-gi the lead role she deserves. She has been shafted for FAR TOO LONG.

6. I know that kdramas tend to cast young twenty-something actors as hyper-competent professionals all the time and it’s something I’ve gotten used to, but Lee Se-hee’s casting is pushing it. It’s not even about her acting ability. I just can’t see her - someone who could pass as my classmate - as a full-time prosecutor. Maybe it’s just me.

7. I’m surprised that Seo Ye-ji can have her triumphant comeback before Kim Jung-hyun’s. I don’t know how I feel about that. As for the drama itself, the writer does not inspire confidence in me.

8. So excited. The 27th can’t come soon enough!

Wow. So curiousity got to me and did some quick searching. All I can say is that I'm somewhat glad to be ignorant of what's happening outside of dramas. But at the same time it's horrendous if it's all true!

Mr. Queen seems so recent, but it's also from 2020.
