Premiere Watch: Mental Coach Jegal

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Drama, sports
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: For someone with zero interest in sports, I find myself always loving dramaland’s sports dramas — probably because they’re so character-rich, and so much about hard work and overcoming. And, in the case of Mental Coach Jegal, about finding your true path in life. The healing sports drama stars the ever-adorable Jung Woo as a taekwondo national athlete turned coach, and Lee Yumi plays a young ice skater who needs some coaching. With old rivalries, new bonds, and — hopefully — a bunch of heart-bursting goodness in between, I am hoping that this drama will be a delightful surprise. Oh, and that Kwon Yul will be able to showcase more of his awesome acting than just scowling and being mean to our heroes.

TL;DR: Jung Woo, cute healing vibes, could be a hidden gem

I do like Jung Woo, so I'll give it a try but not overly excited by it. It probably should have been 12 episodes.

Hoping this will be like Hot stove league getting to see the character development.

STOVE LEAGUE may have been the inspiration for this one. I am sure this is much more about the people than the sports.

I tried to watch that but could not watch even one episode. Realized you need to at least know the basic rules of the sport to enjoy a sport drama.

That’s a shame I dont know anything about baseball apart from that it’s Rounders on speed and I just watched for the characters and the underdog story line. A lot of dramas are the same story, different setting. I know nothing and don't want to know about US politics but loved loved loved West wing for the team.

I grew up watching cricket and tennis! And baseball never attracted me. I started it because it had Nan Goong Min and Park Eun Bin. (I liked her since I saw her in Hello my twenties) But I really could not get past the initial phase.

That's probably more true for baseball than for many other sports because it's impossible to figure out the rules of the game just by watching a little of it (or even a lot of it). I love baseball and baseball-themed movies and series but have had to spend many hours explaining the rules just so friends could 'get' a few minutes of a movie. But cricket is equally flummoxing if you're not from a country where it's widely played!

Agree! Unlike football where the simplest stuff is try to put that ball in other party's goalpost. :-D

But you got it absolutely right, I grew up with cricket crazy parents and which meant I learnt a lot of obscure rules (and there are many in cricket :-D ) and it was fun watching some of them used for a good storytelling while watching a cricket based film or TV.

Since this is written by Kim Ban-di of Angry Mom and Special Labour Inspector Jo fame, I think the show is going to be mainly about abuses and other forms of corruption in sports.

I want to try this but seriously, really, I can’t bear to see Kwon Yul in another 2nd lead role - the obsessive and mean kind. Sigh!
