Cheer Up: Episodes 3-4

These episodes packed a bit more pep than the premiere, getting our team ready to perform. As the Theia newbies take a risk to outdo their rivals, our heroine seems ready to risk her heart as well. But with a campus menace trying to kill her, she’s got bigger problems than a possibly unrequited college crush.

Cheer Up Episodes 3-4

We drop back into the scene with Hae-yi and Jung-woo locked in the storage room where Hae-yi is having a panic attack. Jung-woo tries to help her breathe, while Sun-ho and vice cheer captain TAE CHO-HEE (Jang Gyuri) work to get the door open. Once inside, Cho-hee moves to help Jung-woo calm Hae-yi and Sun-ho stands back, still jealous that his crush was locked up with another guy. Afterward, they discover super glue on the doorknob and Cho-hee mentions, “It’s just like that other time” — cut to a creepy flashback of a girl locked in a room.

In day-to-day life, Hae-yi seems unfazed by what happened, even while receiving threatening texts like, “One of the members will die. It’s going to be you.” She just shrugs them off and goes about her business, not noticing a persistent person in a Yonhee varsity jacket following her around.

Cheer Up Episodes 3-4

Alongside the mystery threads, the love lines are still going strong. Sun-ho has not given up interest in Hae-yi and wants to know where she stands. He asks her directly if she likes their cheer captain. She says no, but it sparks something in her and she spends her nights wondering why he asked her that — and her days looking at Jung-woo and asking, “Do I like him?” One day on duty at the library, she sees Jung-woo asleep at a desk near a window and holds up a book to block the sun from hitting his face. In that moment, it seems she (and we) have the answer.

Back at cheer practice, the new recruits are amping up for the joint pep rally with Hokyung University. Hokyung’s cheer squad, Ignis, is their rival but the two teams will perform on the same stage. In preparation, they must write lyrics for 50 “diss songs” — one to go with each of their competitor’s real songs, since they don’t know which songs Ignis will sing at the event. To get out of the extra work, the Theia newbies decide to break into Hokyung and steal their set list.

Cheer Up Episodes 3-4 Cheer Up Episodes 3-4

Sun-ho gets the group Hokyung jackets so they’ll fit in when they sneak into the other school’s campus, but they all look suspicious AF as they fast walk down the hallways looking for the cheer room. When Hae-yi and Sun-ja finally uncover the set list, it’s under the sleeping head of one of their rivals, but the bigger problem is that the Ignis cheer captain is on her way into the room. Sun-ja escapes while Hae-yi stays the course, prying the list out and hiding under a table. When the cheer captain enters, she wakes up the sleeping guy and the two start making out. Hae-yi — always hungry — has a horribly timed stomach rumble and gets caught red handed.

Luckily the cheer captain LEE HA-JIN (Jung Shin-hye) is super friendly. She tells Hae-yi the teams steal each other’s set lists all the time, and then the two bond over how uptight Jung-woo is. When Jung-woo shows up to “take the hostage” Ha-jin says she wants Theia’s set list in return. Jung-woo agrees easily and leaves with Hae-yi.

But when they get outside and she tries to apologize, Jung-woo is angry and yells at her, asking why she doesn’t just quit, since doing this could hurt the whole team. She cries and tells him he’s being too harsh, just like he is with cheer training. She agrees to quit, and as she’s leaving, her teammates appear making Jung-woo realize she didn’t act alone.

Cheer Up Episodes 3-4

Later, Jung-woo apologizes, saying he felt bad to know that his teammates were suffering because of his harshness. In true college fashion, he and Hae-yi take shots together to make amends and end up five soju bottles deep in drunkenness. Totally wasted, Jung-woo holds her hand at the bus stop as his friend comes by to help her get Jung-woo home. The friend thinks Hae-yi and Jung-woo are dating and Hae-yi clearly likes the idea.

In the morning, she’s all psyched to see him again when Ha-jin drives up at their practice and acts very comfortable with Jung-woo. Hae-yi’s face falls and Sun-ja guesses they’re dating. It’s basically confirmed when another teammate is amazed that Sun-ja could make that guess with so little information (of course, this has to be a misunderstanding, right?).

In the midst of all this who likes who, our team still has to prepare for their big performance. Hae-yi is so excited she tries doing a routine while in bed and smacks her mom awake by accident, lol. She puts on her uniform for the first time and loves it — and is very into it when Jung-woo laces it up in the back for her. She catches herself, though, snatching the laces away and telling him his girlfriend will probably be mad.

Cheer Up Episodes 3-4

When the big day finally comes, there are a few mishaps. Jung-woo gets punched in the face by some former Theia sunbaes who may or may not have misappropriated funds last year. The books don’t match up and Jung-woo has asked for an investigation. He’s undeterred by the punch, believing he’s doing the right thing.

Afterward, Ha-jin is very concerned about Jung-woo and it’s revealed they were dating up until three months ago (I did not see that coming!). We learn that their relationship ended because she cheated on him and she tells him she’s dating someone new now (the make out guy from the other day). She tells Jung-woo she was lonely when she was with him and he didn’t even seem hurt when she cheated. (I’m really interested in the backstory here and would be totally into a story with secretly dating cheer captains from rival schools.)

Cheer Up Episodes 3-4

Anyway, the second mishap (almost) occurs when Hae-yi leaves her uniform unattended and another member of Theia purposefully tries to spill coffee on it. Sun-ho stops her but doesn’t tell Hae-yi. Instead, he tells Jung-woo, who sits the girl down and asks her why. It turns out she likes Sun-ho and she doesn’t understand why he likes Hae-yi.

Jung-woo tells her there’s no excuse, and there will be repercussions, but says he won’t tell the rest of the team, which seems really out of character for him. Not only is he a stickler for rules, but he made Hae-yi apologize to the team when she skipped practice and even told her to quit when she stole the set list. This seems more severe, but I guess the drama needs to keep some loose cannons around with varying motives as we head down the mystery line.

Cheer Up Episodes 3-4 Cheer Up Episodes 3-4

Which brings me to the third mishap. The pep rally begins and Ignis rocks the crowd with Ha-jin at the helm. When it’s Theia’s turn, all the boys up their eyeliner game and Hae-yi beats her initial stage fright. By the end of the first routine, Hae-yi’s love for performance is written all over her face and it doesn’t seem she’ll be quitting when her month is up.

After dark, Theia and Ignis perform a dance together — that’s way higher energy and more fun than anything we’ve seen before — but the drama forgets there were supposed to be diss songs and moves on to other problems. The person that’s been following Hae-yi enters a control room and loosens the stage light over Hae-yi’s head, saying “repeat” before letting it go. Ha-jin sees it wobble and screams out a warning. Hae-yi looks up, the light falls, and Sun-ho snatches her out of the way as it crashes down. After a moment of shock, Jung-woo runs toward the control room to see who is behind it and we’re left to wait another week to find out.

Cheer Up Episodes 3-4

There’s a side thread running to all this about these kids’ moms that I hope will be as fascinating as it seems. Hae-yi’s working-class mom, Chun-yang, runs into Sun-ho’s rich mother, HWANG JIN-HEE (played by Baek Ji-won who is just everywhere right now), and the two already know each other. Jin-hee pretends she doesn’t remember Chun-yang, but when they see each other again while Jin-hee is trying to hide the alcohol she’s carrying with her, Jin-hee puts the bottle in Chun-yang’s purse. The drama does a parallel between the mothers, where Jin-hee drinks and Chun-yang smokes, and both are trying to hide it from their kids who disapprove.

We also briefly meet Jung-woo’s mom, who’s “playing cards again,” and see three mothers with three addictions, with their children trying to intervene. We already know that both Hae-yi and Jung-woo have single mothers, and I’m wondering what road the drama will take us down with this theme. There is a moment when Sun-ho asks Hae-yi why she doesn’t want to go out with him and she answers that he has everything. He responds by saying he doesn’t have everything — leaving me to wonder if his father is absent too. While the love lines and campus mystery are interesting, I’d be happy if the drama can pull off something deeper by exploring these young adults who’ve always had to act older than their age.

I have second lead syndrome. Sun-ho's girlfriend probably dumped him because he was a player, but he's genuine toward Hae-yi. I know she doesn't like him and would've dated him only for his money (lmao), but I enjoy their friendship and the casual way they speak to each other because they're donggap both in the drama and in real life.

I believe ex-boyfriend Jae-hyuk was genuine too when he wanted to get back together; it's just that Hae-yi kept drawing the line between them, so he said hurtful things he didn't mean. It was understandable why he broke up with her because she had no time to spend with him, and her crying after every one of their conversations showed she still had feelings for him.

Bae In-hyuk is miscast in this drama to me. Nothing about him screams cheerleader or cheerful, so his flamboyance on stage feels out of his comfort zone. I know Jung-woo and Hae-yi bonded over having single parents, but I had to check how many episodes Cheer Up had because they liked each other quick.

I wish the writer had named Hokyung University Gokyung since we all know it's Korea University. (https://youtu.be/IcQyolazoxU) Every time Theia sings "Yonhee," I sing "Yonsei." Ha-jin's a girl crush, but I assumed Woon-chan and Sun-ja were mistaken about her and Jung-woo dating when Ha-jin coolly admitted to the kiss and told Hae-yi she didn't have to keep it secret.

Yoo-min's accident should've been part of the prophecies because now it just looks like someone trying to kill off the cheerleading team instead of the third prophecy coming true. I'm so impressed with the freshmen's majors pre-med and mechanical engineering and wonder how they can practice while studying. The parallel between their alcoholic and smoker moms connects Sun-ho and Hae-yi
with both kids disapproving of their vices.

My favorite character is Hae-yi's younger brother. Lee Min-jae is perfect in this role. Jae-yi can cook, is at the top of his class, and wants to help out his family by working part-time. He's a catch and underappreciated.

A big thanks for the weecap, @Dramaddictally!

Thanks so much for including the real cheerleaders link so I can see the individual costumes are spot on as are the dance moves. I think I got confused because the only other cheerleaders I have seen were in Dear M. and they had matching outfits and more involved routines.

I also like Hae Yi's brother and am on his side on how overbearing Hae Yi is being with her money issues.

I can’t believe these costumes and routines are real! It all makes sense now. Ok, the drama is being true to life, so I have to give it more credit for that.

I’m also with the second lead on this one (Bae In-hyuk does seem miscast).

@dramaddictally thank you for the weecap. The picture choices are great; looking at you matching ridiculous over the top Captain outfits.
I agree on the mum’s with issues theme while two of the mums go all out to hide their problems from their children and others, Jungwoo’s mum drops herself in it with the most pointless phone call ever while playing cards.

I am finding this an ok watch but there are too many places I am struggling to suspend my disbelief so I am not fully engaged in the story.

Exhibit one: The PPL misstep Haeyi’s family are poor but her mum prioritises the beauty instrument over funding her son’s academy fees? It would have been much better to have Sunho’s mum using it as she is clearly able to afford expensive items including premium alcohol.

Exhibit two: Haeyi holds the book to block the sunlight we can clearly see the window blind cord behind her, she is at work and is a busy bee. It would have been more realistic for her to have pulled the blind down and been about to get back to work when he woke so they could still have had the conversation and it would have fitted with her character Miss practical.

Exhibit three: The whole undercover ops in the other University was just silly as there were people walking around without the Uni jackets so why go to the trouble of getting the disguise to then be super obvious about strolling around. They are freshmen so it would make sense that they are still unfamiliar with the place so no one would suspect them and yet they seemed to know where to go.

Exhibit four: They are throwing in a lot of false leads on the potential killer and the motives for the killing. Is it a man or a woman? The killer had so much time to escape but were still in the room while Jungwoo had time to ask Haeyi if she was ok before running to a room where someone should be on duty to monitor the equipment all the time. The team member with glasses Minjae, what is his role in the set up? They keep showing him as bitter, in Rookie cops it was the cold and detached person who was an undercover investigator. We saw that we missed what he said and it was the jealous girl who gave the info on Haeyi’s lie about the reason she had missed practice.

Exhibit five: With Haeyi’s personality, I can’t believe she is not engaging with any of the students in her classes so would be dependent on someone she didn’t know for the assignment details. This is set in 2019, so all the assignments etc. info would be available online from before the first class takes place…so surely she would have asked someone to notify her about which group she was in if they weren’t pre assigned.

Thankfully the scary bits are not proper scary so far so I am able to stick with this as an ‘I needed the bean’ watch.

Exhibit 1: i missed that reference.

Exhibit 2: I wholeheartedly agree and same thought when I saw the window blinds cord. I just took it as played for drama to showcase that she is indeed falling for him. She took time out of her busy schedule to block the sun for her crush!

Exhibit 3: I agree and I always avoided wearing school colors on daily life. I only do when its absolutely necessary.

Exhibit 4: Minjae is indeed suspicious as well as that other guy posing as a groupmate for a project.

Exhibit 5: Haeyi is too trusting. I wouldnt give a random guy my info unless I knew he was indeed my classmate and have met before hand in class.

I am enjoying the show despite some quibbles on the story.

Exhibit 1: Is one of a handful of PPL items that immediately pulls me out of a drama because I don’t get why anyone even if they had the money would waste it on that item:
The face product that looks like half a heart I think it’s a massager or laser and was the side ad during the end credits for Why her.
The full face plastic face shield that looks like a discarded prototype for Iron man.
The huge massage chair that can be seen in real life in some airports. Be melodramatic allowed me to now smile whenever I see it’s random appearance.

Ah I remember now, the metal gua sha that I think Lee Young Ae is an endorser of. I remember seeing those on end credits. Yep those are expensive. You are right that Hwang Jin Hee shouldve been given the honor to use that product on a scene.

this drama is hitting all the right notes for me. it has everything I love the most in a romcom, from the college setup to the lead's chemistry. the tropes are there, but I'm 100% on board with everything. I hope the romance starts soon.

if I had to complain about one thing is that the guy who plays the second lead is just doing nothing for me. I can see what he's supposedly representing, but there's no charisma at all there. its interesting that bae inhyuk played a similar ""playboy type"" for roomate is a gumiho, but it was way better lol

The epoxied door and the text death threats make me think -- there are these people called "police" . Sometime you should call them. I will be far out into unable-to-suspend-disbelief territory if we don't see them early in the next episode.

I am surprised that I enjoy watching this show so far. Its the typical college setup for a romcom but the prophecy mystery throws it off a little. I like the underdog aspect of the cheer dance team and so badly want them to succeed against all odds and even third prophecy.
On the romance front, I think that it was really quick for the leads to like each other considering HaeYi seems to have lingering feelings for her ex. Plus Jung Woo seems to have unresolved something for Yoo Min. I suspect that is part of the reason that HaJin felt lonely when they were still in a relationship. (On a side note, I thought it would be fun if the story centered on the cheer dance school rivalry and show how the two cheer dance captains find themselves in a secret relationship. I want to watch that drama).
Anyhow, I am still enjoying the interactions between JW and HY. We are shown how HY realize that she likes JW. Thanks Sun Ho for that question btw, since it made her think of the real score.
Re Sun Ho, i am sure that he has a story of his own but for now lets just say that I am not sympathetic to him. Also I like how Woon Chan is also inadvertently counting Sun Ho's strike outs with Hae Yi as he watches a game on his phone. Sun Ho hates him everytime he does that and I cheer everytime he gets annoyed.
The mystery so far is the weak link for me. I just hope they have a good story for that to make it worthwhile sitting through those scenes.

I'm not a big fan of the FL... half of her life is happening in her head. Like for her ex-boyfriend, it was sad that she heard what he said. But he was having a converstion with a friend and wanted to spend more time with his girlfriend, I understand she felt hurt but she could talk to him, but instead she ghosted him, then broke up with him in public and humiliated him. After that, he was kinda a jerk.

Clearly, her situation impacts her a lot, she has a lot of insecurities. If it's nice she cares about her brother, she's almost like these crazy mothers who want their son to be the first in class.

What is she doing in theology?

The curse and the guy who tried to hurt her like the last girl are not interesting at all. There are so many real themes they could adress instead.

The cheerlader thing looks kinda ridiculous. I don't understand the principle. I think the music alone was more motivating than the weird costumes and moves, I guess it's a cultural difference :p

The mothers are funny.

Still enjoying the show. It has a lot of spunkiness and cute to it. I like the leader of Hokyung. She seems like quite a chill person. The attempts to murder people I'm not a fan of, but I they always put that into the mix. I like the energy of the cheering squads as well, although honestly, it appears that they both do exactly the same routine no matter the song, but that's okay. It's all about the pride you have in your school. It has a sort of high school flair to it, at least to mine, where we all cheered and had fun in the stands, even when our school was getting destroyed in the actual football game, hehe.

Oh by the way, the guy messing with the lights isn't loosening it -- he/she is tightening it, using the control to wind up the thing so tight that the metal fatigues and breaks, causing the light to fall.

I still enjoy the show, the lightness and fun are infectious, the mystery part is absolutely harmless in comparison.

Whenever I see the group on stage, I'm glad I don't have to wear those extremely colourful costumes.

Here I am definitely not in danger of suffering from SL syndrome, although this is very rare for me anyway. But compared to ML, SML is still a boy. On top of that, I find his stubbornness unpleasant, even if he became a more sympathetic in episode 4.

SML kinda annoyed me this ep. I was perfectly fine when he was wooing the FL, but picking on the ML wasn't cool. esp when she clearly gave him the reasons why she rejected him (it had nothing to do with ML and she formed her opinion about him way before she met the ML).

I found myself FFing through the cheer scenes in order to see the characters interact. I'm enjoying the FL and staying for her. The mystery part is mildly interesting. Not sure if I prefer the first or second ML which is unusual as I'm fairly quick to pick a side!

My thought while watching was that Jung-woo didn’t publicly call out the coffee spiller because they were about to perform. That kind of direct sabotage would have been emotionally jarring and thrown everyone off.

Also, I’m really fascinated by the cheer costumes and performances. They do seem odd to me, but it’s really just different. I stayed away for a couple of weeks because I have the experience/stereotypes of mean/popular American cheerleaders in my head. This is a refreshing difference.

Agree on both points.
He did not act on it right away because it would cause stress among member. He did say he would act on it the next day and will not go unpunished. Seems exactly like the kind of thing he would do.
I think I have warmed up to the uniforms and the style of cheer leading. Its invigorating and has the crowd be part of it. If the university has certain songs that everyone knows, I am sure these events must be very energising. Almost like a concert that is motivating!

What a bunch of cheerful episodes! I actually quite enjoyed the pep rally, uniform and the vibrance. I Think its nice to see college kids feeling energized by performances, made me very nostalgic.

I like the leads and look forward to slow progression of romance! But I am equally interested in all the characters! And YES, we need the 2 mommy drinking session! lol.. It would be a hoot.

goodness! Cannot believe someone willingly cut off that light.. it is an attempt at murder. Looks like we have some seniors who are not part of the university involved still in the matters.
