Premiere Watch: Unlock the Boss, Connect

We have a busy week of premieres ahead, so here is what we are looking at for our midweek slots, with another post coming to go through all the upcoming weekend shows. It’s going to be a busy December, and it looks like more of the same for January, so buckle up!

Unlock the Boss

Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: ENA
Genre: Comedy, fantasy, mystery
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: If you’re like me and have fallen under the spell of the smiley Chae Jong-hyeop + have a weakness for cheesy dramas, the reasons to watch Unlock the Boss are a no brainer. But also, there’s Park Sung-woong being funny, and I long to see how he plays against Chae Jong-hyeop here. They’re sure to be a riot, if all goes will with the script (which is written by the screenwriter behind Sweet Home, interestingly). If you can get behind the plot of a person getting locked in a smartphone — which, yes — this could be a fun one.

TL;DR: Chae Jong-hyeop, Park Sung-woong, silly premise, promise of laughter

Connect

Time slot: Wednesday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Disney+
Genre: Mystery, horror, crime, thriller
Episode count: 6

Reasons to watch: We have another imaginative premise with Connect, but this one takes a darker turn from our other premiere, with Jung Hae-in playing a new type of human, and Go Kyung-pyo playing a serial killer masquerading as a bland nice guy (heh). The trailers are all kinds of creepy, and it looks like this drama will fit into what we’ve been seeing from Disney+ of late in the K-drama space: high budget productions with great talent all around, but quite dark and heavy in terms of tone. (It’s kinda like they’re copying this other streaming service I know…) Anyway, Connect also boasts Japanese film director Takashi Miike, and has a lot of buzz around it. Now, I am willing to do a lot of things for Jung Hae-in, but unfortunately watching a horror drama about eyeball harvesting is not one of them.

TL;DR: Jung Hae-in! Go Kyung-pyo! (Except also eyeballs, bloody tentacles, and other such things)

‘Connect’ is a huge no for me. The horrid tentacles and the organ theft put the kibosh on it but hope those of you who want to watch it, will enjoy it.

Yeah, the teaser was freaky. I may not have the stomach for it. But I will still try.

Unlock sounds promising.

Connect: well if it's good, a Wednesday of Doom isn't as dire as a Friday Night of Doom. If it sucks that's fine as I have enough to watch then anyway.

Unlock the boss is highly anticipated. I am hoping to be able to handle the scary/thriller bits via fast forward if needed as the rest looks really funny and an interesting idea.

I will test both!

I like the casting, I'm more uncertain about the plot.

I adore both Jung Hae in and Go Kyung-pyo, but man, no... I wont be watching this. I just dont like to deal with serial killers and thrillers on my tv screen... I dont even watch thriller films... Too stressful.
But good for them, that they can act different roles. I am happy for them.

Guess I’ll be the sole beanie venturing into Connect. I’ve been excited about this for a while, even though Takashi Miike’s previous works have been a hit-or-miss for me. I hope this one is squarely in the hit category given the talent involved.

Not gonna lie, you've half sold it to me. This is the first time I found out that Japanese writers and directors are working in Korea. I find the two styles don't mesh particularly well and now I'm very curious as to what a merging of the two will come up with.

Also considering my drama choices this year, this would probably be one of my least problematic pick-ups.

Yeah, if someone were to make me guess which Japanese creative would take a crack at the kdrama scene, Takashi Miike wouldn’t have been my first choice, or my second…or tenth lmao. That’s almost half the reason why I’m so curious about Connect. Part of me still can’t wrap my head around the dissonance between typical kdrama fare and a typical Miike film. It’s too bizarre to not check what chimera-like hybrid this’ll be.

I watched the first episode of "Unlock the Boss" and will definitely watch the second. It was not the riotous, cheesy comedy I expected; in fact, it's more earnest in its socioeconomic critique than I anticipated. The three main characters are all struggling with family or money or both, and even the ludicrous main premise of man-locked-in-phone was played pretty straight. The next episode looks like it might be funnier and lighter in tone, but if it's not, that's not necessarily a problem as the story is involving enough that I don't care if it's full of laughs or not.

There's also a clear romantic set-up that I liked.

So this one has promise and 12 episodes means it got right into the plot without too much buildup, which I appreciate.

Oh, and Chae Jong-hyeop has clearly been working out.

Ooooooh, sounds promising! I thought it would be comedic, but wither way it’s a very unique premise and I’m intrigued. Definitely gonna have to check it out soon!

thanks for this, I'm happy to hear such positive tone of review of the 1st ep, because after I first found Chae Jong-hyeop in Love All Play, I straight become a fan, so I hope that his follow up project after Love would be something that I like. Now I would be happily checking this show out :)

You had me at "eyeball harvesting". Currently watching the fourth episode of "Connect". The show is not as creepy as I expected it to be but I'm hoping the final showdown between our leads will make up for it. So far, I'm enjoying Go Kyung-pyo the most.
