Ratcheting up the drama in Queen of the Mask

Tales of revenge — especially those centered around complicated female relationships — seem to be all the rage in dramaland, and Channel A takes it up a notch in the teaser for their upcoming mystery-thriller Queen of the Mask.

The story follows four women, played by Kim Sun-ah (The Empire), Oh Yoon-ah (Once Again), Shin Eun-jung (Dr. Park’s Clinic), and Yoo Sun (Eve). When one is wronged and thrown under the bus by the other three (and I mean this metaphorically, but since this is dramaland, we might want to consider it as a real possibility), she circles back later for some revenge.

From the looks of the teaser, this seems like the low rent melo version of The Glory — but with Kim Sun-ah in the lead and three other amazing actresses involved, it might be a wild-looking ride, but at least we know the acting will be on point.

The teaser opens with our friend group of four in some glamorous masquerade masks, happy and smiling, while our heroine narrates over the text screen that, “Our friendship was perfect.” But then the masks come off — and not just off their faces. Now there’s a mask on the floor dripping with blood (I just had to lol).

Our heroine’s narration picks up again, but the text lingers on the screen and suddenly ~ominously~ changes: “Our friendship had been perfect…” Intercut are shots of our characters distraught, hunted, and looking particularly fiercesome, until the line concludes with “…up until that day, when that event happened.”

Written by Im Do-wan, and directed by PD Kang Ho-joong, Channel A’s Queen of the Mask premieres in the Monday-Tuesday slot on April 24.

It’s true, revenge and school/office bullying seem to be prevalent at the moment. Is this the only way it can be justified to have a strong (aka normal in everyday life) female lead or multiple female characters without relying on a good looking man to carry the plot? Just a random thought but how do these writers get to keep their genres untarnished but us rom com fans have to deal with shoe horned elements in most of our watches these days?

I hate the revenge genre but really like these actresses so may consider watching this. It's a shame they aren't playing better characters in a better narrative. These women and their talents would be so much better served in a SaTC type Kdrama.
