Would You Rather #11

In dramaland, leading ladies often find themselves torn between the love of two equally attractive men — a choice none of us would want to make! But what if you did have to pick between the frustrating lawyer and the adorkable police officer? In this weekly feature, we ask you to make the difficult decisions — and we aren’t limiting our options to dreamy oppas.

Vote via the poll and feel free to use the comments to explain exactly how you were able to choose! So, Beanies:

WOULD YOU RATHER #10: RESULTS

Another week and another clear winner. Nearly 72% of Beanies indicated that they would rather hear people’s thoughts than give up their ability to lie. Hmmmm… does that mean there’s a lot of dishonest people lurking on Dramabeans? Nah, I’m sure you’re all an honest bunch, or, in the case of @gikata “so blunt that people often [get the] wrong impression.”

And it’s not like lying is inherently evil. For @ar, small white lies allow her to keep the magic of Santa and the Tooth Fairy alive for her kids. Plus, as @britney pointed out, sometimes lying can function as a safety measure. What if a K-drama baddie holds you at knife-point and you need to lie your way out of the life-or-death situation?

Interestingly, even though the poll indicated that more people would rather retain their ability to tell their Aunt Karen she looks ten years younger in her leopard print yoga pants, the comments were flooded with people opting to only speak the truth because the constant noise pollution of hearing other people’s thoughts would likely drive them insane. Sure, there were a few of you, like @welh640, who thought the benefits of knowing what others are thinking — especially when doing business deals or trying to navigate confusing interpersonal situations —outweighed the bad, but most of you in the comments section seemed to agree with @elinor, who said it best:

My god, the cacophony inside my own head is often out of control and adding the thoughts coming in from other people would drive me out of my mind.

I have to say though, the idea of feeling crazy levels of anxiety because someone thought it would be fun to play with my fear and desperation... Disgusting. (I haven't watched Squid Games, but I think that's what happens, right?)

I will say the students in All of Us are Dead were fairly smart and behaved in the some of the best ways I've ever seen in a zombie show. I would want to be like them but alas I think I would end up zombie fodder.

With Squid Game, after the first game people, as majority were able to leave. If I survived the first game, I would leave and never come back. It would've been a miracle if I survived the first game (cause I'm not athletic) so I would take that as a sign to get away and hopefully figure a way ouf of my situation that led me to the games in the first place.

Squid Game is voluntarily gamble on almost death for slim chance of gaining money. All of Us Are Dead is an involuntary deadly situation with a slim chance of saving your own life. If living is the ultimate goal, then the only clear choice would be start Squid Game and voluntarily exit the game when the real rules are given as shown in the latter half of the second episode (“Hell”). That episode starts with the players leaving the game after it was revealed that players who lose the game are killed on sight. The players have a clause in their contract that the game stops if a majority of players agree, and they take a vote where ‘end the game’ narrowly prevails.

I always wonder if there were American or western games were used, what would they be. I go totally blank. I had to ask people and one game people came up with was Hopscotch.

Thinking about Squid Game, it really is cool how imaginative it is because who would think children's games could be murder games? And the games chosen. I've never played marbles so seeing those games were new for me.

I don't know if there will be new games in S2 because I've watched some variety shows since I first watched Squid Game, I know recognize some Korean games and I wonder if they'll be included this time (like the hacky sack like game (jegi) and the stone catching game (gonggi) which I think is a bit like jacks, another game I didn't play as a child haha oh my sad childhood).
Korean games that I seen and liked but don't think would be included: the strawberry game and absolute pitches (that might be an ancient game that's not played nowadays but I saw it on S1 of 1n2d)

Potential western games:
Dodgeball
Tag
Time Bomb (there was a toy that would "explode" after a given time period; the person holding it would be OUT.)
Hide and Seek (with a time limit)

As much I like Gong Yoo, I don't want to get slapped by him...

I'm too old to be in highschool. So I'm safe :p

Well, if living through covid pandemic and... uh, other apocalyptic stuff somehow didn't prepare me properly for zombie outbreak, than Happiness surely did. I don't have an all-purpose baseball bat (need to fix this asap) or badass husband to shield me from bloodthirsty crowd with his own body (never been more close to rethinking my anti-marriage beliefs than after being introduced to THE Jung Yi Hyun), but there's enough of training weapons, combat pragmatism, willpower and suppressed rage at my disposal to give any horde, alive or undead, some VERY strong regrets for messing with me.

No games. Ever. I hate playing by rules that I didn't set myself.

I vote be trapped in a school with zombies, mostly because there can be more than one survivor/winner. Slightly better odds. As an alternative to getting rich by winning Squid Games, make some money by being the first to write a memoir of the Zompocalypse, or a How to Defeat Zombies For Dummies guide. Or just get a job and learn to be ok without being rich.

BTW, I interpret "participate in the squid games" as requiring you to stay in till the end, not opting out after the rules are explained.

Neither. Both options are too gory for me and my squeamish stomach to contemplate.

Although a potential loophole is that you can opt out of the Squid Games after the first game, within the context of the show, this isn't necessarily much of a perk. In this universe I'd still be stuck with either:
a) crippling debt,
b) near-inescapable poverty,
c) a gambling addiction,
d) a loved one/s with a desperate and urgent need for funds that I do not have,
or
e) all of the above

At least if I survive the zombies, I have a better chance of existing within an inherently hostile capitalist society (providing the zombies haven't destroyed that too). Plus, who knows, maybe the zombies save us some trouble and eat the rich for us.

Also, I doubt I'd survive zombies, but I've certainly got a better chance there than I do 'winning' the games. Sure, it would leave me with horrific PTSD, but at least in the All of Us are Dead scenario, I have a chance of being able to afford therapy after the fact.

If you want another potential Squid loophole (which I don't recall was ever discussed by the players) was to overpower the guards, steal the money and flee the island. And if this is the plot for the next one, I want a writing credit.

I chose Squid Games! Of course, both options are TERRIBLE, but at least with Squid Games you can win a fortune after enduring therapy-inducing trauma... sadly, with zombies, all you win is the right to continue living...

I went with zombie school only because I wouldn't have survived the first round to even get the option to leave squid game. 😭

I voted for being trapped at school with zombies. Because I found an interested article that I would pick a surviving options from Hooked on Innovation: https://hookedoninnovation.com/2016/10/27/a-zombies-survival-guide-to-schools/

1) all-in-one desks are the traps
2) watch out for no. 2 pencils
3) avoid bathroom breaks
4) stay off social media (until the zombie apocalypse ends and return to normal)

My understanding of Squid Games is imperfect, but isn't there only one winner/survivor? I like my chances better with the zombies. No way I could out-compete a bunch of other desperate people, but at least with a zombie situation there is a hope of cooperation, if only a slim one.

I would rather be in All of Us Are Dead.

I haven't watched either but read spoilers. I don't want to compete and fight against people like in Squid Game. I hate the idea of being in survival game to entertain wealthy people who have a perverted taste for poor people fighting each other to death over what must be a measly sum of money to them. It's not like my survival skills are that great either. I'm terrible at games. I don't want to die to entertain those m---f---s

I'd rather die teaming up with my classmates to fight zombies. No games. Give it to me straight!
