You can only pick one: Jung Kyung-ho drama

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one Jung Kyung-ho drama

missvictrix: I’m picking Heartless City here for several reasons. First, it was my first Jung Kyung-ho drama. Second, it hit me in the gut. Third, I cried like a fool! I don’t know how well the drama would stand up against a rewatch – and I remember being utterly bewildered by the loveline that felt shoehorned in here — but the drama was such a great dive into loyalty and trust in the criminal underbelly that it didn’t need much more than that. Often, I find myself watching a drama for the love of a single character and/or the OTP, but with Heartless City there were about four or five characters that I was highly invested in (this is saying a lot for me!). I guess my conclusion is that if I’m going to watch a crime drama, it had better be a crime melo.

mistyisles: This one’s tough, because I’ve loved pretty much every role I’ve seen Jung Kyung-ho play (yes, even Missing Nine, which I greatly enjoyed watching until those last few episodes devolved into… whatever that was). In fact, I’m almost tempted to choose Missing Nine in spite of it disappointing me in the end, just because that was the first role of his that caught my attention and made me a fan. But if I’m looking at the show as a whole, then it has to be Life on Mars, no question! And considering I bring it up every chance I get these days, that probably doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone.

DaebakGrits: Since I recently chose Hospital Playlist for another prompt, I’m going to pick one of Jung Kyung-ho’s older dramas that I hope to rewatch one day — when I find the time. Falling for Innocence (a.k.a. Beating Again) is probably the first drama that I ever saw him star in, and this melodramatic rom-com (with a side of murder mystery) has somehow managed to stick with me over the years. I mean, the premise of the story is that Jung Kyung-ho’s character receives a heart transplant from a murdered police officer, and not only does he begin taking on his heart donor’s personalities and memories, but he also starts falling in love with the donor’s fiancee. How tragically romantic — and quintessentially K-drama-like — is that plot for you? I have no idea whether this drama will stand the test of time or not, but I hope I set aside enough time one day to find out!

solstices: Smart Prison Living, a.k.a. Prison Playbook, for sure! The Answer Me production team worked their magic yet again, delivering a grounded and heartwarming slice-of-life story within a seemingly bleak prison setting. Amidst a cast full of stellar performances and standout scene-stealers, Jung Kyung-ho was the indispensable best friend who brought a much-needed breath of fresh air to Park Hae-soo’s stifling imprisonment. They shared a solid, steady friendship founded on mutual understanding and respect, with a loyal bond akin to that of actual brothers. Plus, what’s more swoonworthy than a man who knows to ask for consent first? Jung Kyung-ho’s Joon-ho had a heart as big as his smile, and now I’m tempted to rewatch the drama all over again.

Unit: This pick was a bit tough because Jung Kyung-ho has been in quite a few dramas I really liked. But “you can only pick one,” so I’ll have to go with Life on Mars. Despite the ambiguous aspects, I found it really entertaining when I watched it, and even on a recent rewatch, it still held up pretty well. In addition to Jung Kyung-ho’s performance, the retro vibes of the drama, and the cast chemistry, I loved Life on Mars for the excellent writing that seamlessly wove a mixture of genres — time slip (?), mystery, action, humor, thriller, and the ever-so-slight hint of romance — together to create a drama that is nothing short of perfection.

If I can only pick one, it'd be Life on Mars for sure. It is near-perfect as a drama with excellent writing, pacing and performances with Jung Kyung-ho truly shining throughout.

IIRC Jung Kyung-ho was in almost every scene of the show and yet you don't feel exhausted with his character. He's playing a competent, intelligent cop but also manages to project this feeling of being a lost soul who must be protected. An extremely restrained but nuanced performance.

I missed watching it since there were no legal streaming sites in the US when it aired. And it’s still not available as far as I know. I probably should go the dark side and watch it.

I'm going way back and picking Smile, You. It was the first drama of his that I watched, and he was such a refreshing change from the typical cold-hearted chaebol so prevalent everywhere in Kdramaland. I could totally understand why the FL fell for him. I've enjoyed every performance of his since.

I was just scanning Viki to find an old drama to watch that I have missed. Heartless City it is. Been on my list for years.

If I have to pick one I will pick Hospital Playlist. I loved his character in this drama. He came across as prickly, yet he was extremely professional with incredible bed side manners. As a no nonsense doctor he stole my heart in that show. Plus, he was such a softie when he was not working. I loved his rapport with his hoobae, eating dynamic with Song Hwa, his romance with Ik-sun and everything. He was hilarious when he was with his friends. This man can pull of humor one minute and be swoony in the next. And I think this show showed his range very well.

You can only pick one Jung Kyung-ho drama
Well that's not fair! My pick would be Heartless City (a.k.a. Cruel City). It was a memorable character/role for so many of us beanies back in 2013. Couldn't help but be enamored by him. Jung Kyung-ho shines in this stylish noir crime drama projecting a tall, svelte, sexy, and smart brainiac screen presence against the backdrop of the criminal underworld.

I will never forget Jung Kyung-ho as Doctor's Son/Baksa Adeul/Jung Shi Hyun! Along with the noir cinematography, atmosphere and mood of the story, memorable characters, bromance and OST.

Memorable characters: Choi Moo Sung as Moon Duk Bae / Safari; Kim Yoo Mi as Madame Kim Hyun Soo; Yoon Hyun Min as Kim Hyun Soo

OST: Kim Yong Jin (김용진) - 상처 (Hurt)

Runner-up: Life on Mars

Yeah! Same pick for me🤩🤩🤩. Baksa Adeul/Doctor's Son! The ost, the bromance... You got me tripping here! JKH pulled off that tough/smooth criminal/bad guy role so well that it took me a while to adjust to his other softer roles like in "Beating Again". "Heartless City" is the main reason I am JKH fan today.😍

I have to choose Life on Mars, in fact Life on Mars by a very long way. Even though, as an ardent and devoted lover of the extraordinary original, it didn't come close to that piece of brilliance. But then it was never going to and if you are going to adapt something then this is the way to do it. In fact, it's maybe Korea's best adaptation (a thought that is now making me wonder if there ever was a better one).

Of course this come with a hefty dose of personal preference since the kind of slice-of-life of Hospital Playlist and Prison Playbook is not my cup of tea.

But as much as I think that Jung Kyung-ho is amazing and Life on Mars is a very good show, I can only recommend people watch the original, which is one of the best pieces of television ever made.

I vaguely remember watching Life on mars it’s not my usual genre at all but I did stick with it so it must have been good. When I kept seeing people mentioning a Korean adaption I just couldn’t see how that would work as it just seemed to be so embedded in English culture.

Required fields are marked *

The original has a real Mancunian vibe that no adaptation is going to be able to replicate. It's deeply embedded in time and space. Although, you know, the adaptation has a lot of thought into it in terms of making it Korean and seen as an independent show it's quite good. It's definitely the best adaptation I've seen since it's not a shot by shot remake but has its own story to tell (within the scope of the original's premise, which it maintains).
But it's never going to be able to capture the brilliance of the original since, by definition, it still has to be a kdrama.

I just took a peak at SBS’s JA MUNG GO (2009) (39 episodes) at MDL and it looks like JKH had a great mane of glory:

Despite my disinterest in the fact that it was set in the music/entertainment industry, I really enjoyed PSW's devil to JKH's soul-selling character. They really played off of each other well as both great actors and great characters. The narrative was also a very interesting perspective on human nature. Not to mention I'd sign up for soul-selling if PSW were to make me a deal I can't refuse (what an under-rated actor he is!).

Family drama Smile You (2009) with Lee Min-jung. He starts off as the beta to Lee, and slowly becomes her rock and guide, making his character my favourite K-drama boyfriend.
On it's own, the drama is great fun, and would have easily been a classic, had it not been extended. That hurt the story. The first 20-25 episodes are *chef's kiss*

JKH is really great in comedy roles, he knows how to use his body for comedy like in Life on Mars, Prison Playbook, Falling for Innocence, Hospital Playlist.

But nothing can beat his role in Heartless City!

It has to be Falling for Innocence for me because that was his first I ever saw and instantly became a fan. Though performance wise I did see clips of Life on Mars and Heartless city and he looked pretty good there. He was also the scene stealer in Prison Playbook. Though I feel in his recent shows Hospital Playlist and CCIR he didn't get the chance to shine to his full potential, in CCIR especially. He's easily one of the most versatile actors in SK dramaland where he can go from serious to funny to swoony in a matter of seconds. Seeing his bts clips l, he does quite a lot of ad libs and does like elevating the funny scenes even further.

Required fields are marked *

Oh, this is tough. I've watched almost every project he was in, and I like most of it. Even if I ended up hating the bewildering and disappointing second half, like in Missing Nine and One More Happy Ending, he still made his character shine through, which wasn't easy.

Still, if I have to choose one drama, it would be Prison Playbook. Between his unusual career choice, his steadfast friendship with Jae-hyuk, the swoony romance he got, his hilarious bickering dynamic with his exasperating brother, and the evolving relationship he got going with the inmates under his watch, this drama gave me so many new Jung Kyung-ho experiences. I love how he still managed to surprise me with this role even after years watching him being the versatile actor that he was.

His Hospital Playlist's Kim Jun-wan would be a close second. His cute dynamic with Chae Song-hwa is still high up there in my list of k-drama platonic goal.

I've only seen him in two so far (the cameo in CLOY notwithstanding): Prison Playbook and Crash Course in Romance. Any wild guesses which one I'd recommend? Hint: In one of these Shin Jae-ha is a smiley genuine person who was caught in a bad situation and in the other he is a smiley person who is also a serial killer.

Prison Playbook was incredible and Joon-ho was my favorite thing. He was charming and smart and an excellent foil to his friend who was a bit of a dolt (but endearingly so). Even though his romance was a bit of a side story, it is one that has stuck with me because so many of its moments were phenomenal. I also loved the growth we saw from his character, as he went from fairly indifferent interloper in the prison, to someone more committed to his job and having a greater appreciation for what he was there to do.

Time to cheat again. As I read each comment of our DB staff I came to the conclusion that in some cases its not only great writing and directing but the actor that makes the drama and Jung Kyung-ho is such and actor. He draws me into whatever one he is in and I love watching him act. (beautiful hands aside) So, my vote has to be anything he is in pretty much! (He had my heart at Heartless City first).

I came to kdramaland in 2016 and HC was my fifth kdrama. It made me a Jung Kyung-ho (and Yoon Hyun-min) fan for life.
Two observations:
1. From HC to CCIR Jung Kyung-ho’s body type has been the same. He is a thin guy; and
2. We are way overdue for a JKH and YHM reunion. Please drama gods get these two back together and not as antagonists like in BEATING AGAIN (2015) available on Viki US under the title: FALLING FOR INNOCENCE.

I watched Kyung Ho first in One More Happy Ending and he's been my favorite bias ever since. Oddly, I haven't yet watched the show that launched him to most of the beanies' radar - Heartless City. I guess I'm waiting for it to be available on the streaming sites I'm on. Or perhaps for a better, more vacant time to give it my full attention. But to pick one show? Hmm.. Yeah. It would most probably be Life On Mars. His acting is always impeccable but his take on that drama was just *chef's kiss*. A close second would be Hospital Playlist. Although his roles in Falling for Innocence was also so swoony. I can still remember that scene where he cried in frustration to the FL because he's finally experienced the brunt of all the wrong things he did in the past - and hating himself so much for it. I remember replaying that scene over and over trying to soak his amazing acting. 😍

I tried giving Falling for Innocence another chance last week but both lead characters are simply not my cup of tea. If I had to choose the drama(s) in which I found him most attractive in, I would say Crash Course in Romance and When the Devil Calls Your Name.

My very first introduction to Jung Kyung Ho is through Heartless city drama. He was cold and brutal in the drama and I got so hooked to his character. He was really hot in that drama. I couldnt take my eyes of him. Since then I have wanted to see him in many more projects. He has a very different charm which draws his viewers to watch the show.

My second favourite drama of his is Life of Mars. A very lost soul found himself in the 80's and he nailed his character there. I could feel his pain and how he wanted to get out of that inner turmoil.
