News bites: June 25, 2023

  • New stills have arrived for tvN’s Uncanny Counter 2: Counter Punch, featuring our heroes’ new eager rookie Yoo In-soo (The Good Bad Mother) looking utterly adorable. Along with Jo Byung-kyu (Stove League), Yoo Joon-sang (Alchemy of Souls), Kim Se-jung (Today’s Webtoon), and Yeom Hye-ran (The Glory), the fantasy-action’s second season will be launching next month on July 29. [News1]

  • Speaking of sequels, after the exciting first casting announcement for Netflix’s Squid Game 2, speculation has grown on the female leads. Although both Park Kyu-young (Dal-li and Gamjatang) and Jo Yu-ri (Work Later Drink Now 2) are being mentioned by news outlets, the reports are still mixed on whether casting is confirmed. [MBC, Star News]

  • In the meantime, we’ll be seeing Park Kyu-young very soon in Netflix’s upcoming Celebrity. In the latest stills, we get a look at some of our supporting cast in the mystery-suspense, which also stars Kang Min-hyuk (Oh! Master), Lee Chung-ah (One Dollar Lawyer), Lee Dong-gun (Leverage), and Jeon Hyo-sung (Memorist). The series will be releasing this week on June 30. [Sports Kyunghyang]
  • Kim Ji-eun (One Dollar Lawyer) is reviewing an offer to star in a new body-swap office romance called Branding in Sungsoo-dong. With the fantasy’s switcheroo triggered by a kiss, Kim is up to play a marketing team lead while the male lead will be an intern. Production is still in the planning stages with PD Jung Heon-soo (Unique Chef Moon, Twelve Nights) attached to direct. [Xports News]

  • A new action series called I Kill You (working title) is in the works and the new stills reveal Kang Ji-young (Doctor Cha) and Lee Ki-kwang (Lovely Horribly) leading the first script reading. Notably, the former will be taking on two roles: a DUI hit-and-run suspect as well as the doppelgänger who assumes her identity when addressing the public. Marking his drama debut, filmmaker Yoo Ha (Pipeline, Gangnam Blues) is at the helm. [Sports Chosun]
  • ENA released new stills from Not Others (formerly Strangers), once again featuring our mother-daughter leading ladies Jeon Hye-jin (Uncle) and Sooyoung (Please Send a Fan Letter). Although we haven’t seen much of them yet, we are expecting some romance as well with Ahn Jae-wook (The Empire) and Park Sung-hoon (The Glory), respectively. The comedy premieres on July 17 in the Monday-Tuesday slot. [MBC, News1]

1) Yoo In-soo has an "awful hair" clause in every contract? The Blond in AoS, the wigs... He seems always casted for the same kind of roles too.

2) Looks like Kim Si Eun will be the female lead in Squid Game 2 and not Park Kyu-young :(

It’s possible that this Uncanny Counter wig on Yoo Insoo is worse than his wig in Good Bad Mother. At least the one in Good Bad Mother was used for laughs.

Soft spot for Sooyoung, she was in the first K-drama I ever saw ten years ago.

My Goddess, the poor bugger with the hideous wig. Yoo Insoo is not getting a break after the moronic Samshik role.

No. 1. tvN’s TUC2: COUNTER PUNCH. I will be watching. The last time I saw a ‘do’ that bad on an actor in a kdrama was not that long ago and it was on Jang Dong-yoon in KBS’s OASIS (VIKI US) (which I loved, now my favorite JDY drama). Like JDY, Yoo In-soo seems to be a good sport about his look.
