Premiere Watch: See You in My 19th Life

Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Fantasy, romance
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Our other hotly anticipated drama premiere this weekend is tvN’s See You in My 19th Life. The beloved webtoon gets an adaptation with Shin Hye-sun as our reincarnating heroine, and Ahn Bo-hyun as the love from her past that she can’t forget. Also in lead roles are the up-and-coming Ha Yoon-kyung and Ahn Dong-goo, so this is exciting on all fronts.

While King the Land has been quite over-zealous with their teasers and promos — already showing us so many of the drama’s highlights — See You in my 19th Life has chosen the opposite strategy. From the beginning of the promotion cycle, teasers have been vague and mysterious, and even the more complete official trailer release has left a lot to the imagination. I’m left feeling like I still don’t know what to expect from this drama’s tone and storytelling, and that’s got me only more excited for the big premiere.

TL;DR: Highly anticipated webtoon adaption about a woman who remembers all of her past lives.

Some Korean male actors - unlike any female ones who cannot possibly be allowed to be anything but thin - seem to put on weight and lose them for roles. Ahn Bohyun was so much bigger as Goo Oong in Yumi’s Cells. It really suited him.

Kim Sun-a put on weight for her role in My Name Is Kim Sam-soon.

I’ve heard that Ahn Bo-hyun’s casting is actually controversial amongst many webtoon fans because the character is meant to be sickly-thin and weak looking

Accidentally posted send before finishing, grhhhh. Hate it when that happens.

… sickly-thin and weak-looking, which he clearly isn’t, even with the weight loss regiment.

To be fair, he looks sickly and thin in comparison to his previous roles. So his look actually works for me here. However, if I had previous knowledge, I would feel weird about his casting. So I understand.

Tricky situation - cinema is a visual art so LOOKING like one's character is written to be IS important. There are clearly tons of guys in k-ent that would've fit the description better, and with all the respect to ABH he is not some acting prodigy that can put out an award-worthy performance making people totally forget he doesn't exactly look the part. To think that he even had to drastically lose weight... Dude must've want this role BADLY. Well, if anything, I always respect the dedication. Hope his health is fine and it was worth it. We'll see soon)))

This is one of those characteristics that should be left in the webtoon. Weakly looking is not healthy.

I have read the Webtoon. He is sort of prickly and gloomy. And he is hard of hearing. They did not focus as much on his hearing disability in this adaptation but in Webtoon that is rather obvious. But he is not really weak or sickly at all.
In fact he is shown teaching his friend's brother how to fight. (Spoiler : He fights goons in one of the scenes in a later part of the story) I do not know where this weak part is coming from.

Right now, I don't seem to mind ABH in the role. And I am a fan of the webtoon and Seo-ha. They are not exactly the same person, but that's okay.

Honestly, how can anyone pick, at least in premiere week? I secretly wish Netflix spaces them out so my week is full of goodness.

Reason to watch: Shin Hye-sun Shin Hye-sun Shin Hye-sun Shin Hye-sun Shin Hye-sun Shin Hye-sun.

I don’t even need another explanation. If she’s in a project, I’ll watch it. Her performances are the acting equivalent of the Midas touch - golden and unmissable.

Isn’t it a nice balance that while many of us watching that “other” drama premiering this weekend for the ML, so many are looking fwd to our FL here?

Tho to be honest, the premise of this is a bit more interesting to me, or at least fresher.

Definitely a good balance of excitement for both an actor and an actress. I'm always here for people being equally or more excited about a female protagonist. Drama anticipation comes off as so male-centric a lot of the time, its a refreshing change of pace.

You could also say there's a good balance in the type of dramas here: one is a feel-good, old-fashioned bickering romcom; the other is a fantastical, fresh take (literally, for Ban Ji-eum) on life and love. Whichever suits your mood at the given moment, it's there.

This is true, but Ahn Bo Hyun is an objectively better actor than Yoona is, so although he doesn't match Shin Hye Sun, him trying to keep up isn't as painful to watch. So she is the reason for the season, but I'm here for him too.

I really am looking forward to the drama because this is the first time i have read the webtoon before the drama on it came out. I find ABH very attractive but to be honest, I am here for Shin Hye Sun. The woman is an amazing actress.

What happened to Ahn Bohyun's face!?
Are they trying to transform him into a flower boy?

I watched the first episode and will definitely keep tuning in. It has this warmth and fairy tale quality without being cloying that I really like. Even though it's not similar to it in any significant aspects, "19th Life" reminded me somewhat of "It's Ok to Not Be Ok," and hooked me right away.

I loved the actress playing the younger version of our heroine, and Shin Hye-sun looks gorgeous. The color palette is also lovely. I wanted to spend the hour in this world with these characters, and right now, that's all I could hope for.

Loving what I see in episode 1! I'm in! See you all around ❤️

I didn't read the webtoon but my daughter did and she said it's different. It doesn't matter to me because I'm going in with no preconceptions or ideas what I'm going to get out of it other than what the short synopsis of the series is about.

Love the younger version of the FL. She's good!

enjoyed the first episode! park so-yi, the child actress who played the fl as a child in her 19th life, was SO GOOD.

19th Life has a much slower, more measured pace than King the Land. It’ll be a nice contrast in viewing.

Even if it turns out I’m not a fan of the show itself, I’ll continue to watch anything with Shin Hye-Sun. She’s got range that few actresses have and she always brings her “A” game.

After watching episodes 1 & 2, I am looking forward to more of this drama. Since I have not seen/read the webtoon, I have no preconceived ideas of the characters or expectations of the plot. It is my experience that Kdramas don't recreate the webtoon, rather, the webtoon is inspiration. I'm not sure of the mythology of reincarnation, but it seems that it is unusual for people to remember their past lives so it seems odd that the FL continues to expect the ML to remember her from his previous lives.

But it's not his previous life. It was his childhood. She was the one who reincarnated very fast after her death.
