This show has consistently pulled it’s punches even as they are set up: In episode 47 Joon Ha is “exposed” as adopted by Strawberry before he can do anything with his newfound grandson status, Se-jin’s father does not die and the story of Macknae and the Young Father (and Soo-gyeum and her mom) seems to just be sputtering out.

The 'cliffhanger' at the end of episode 48 was completely predictable. It was also unnecessary. It just eats time- which may have been the purpose. This show is just running out the clock. Only two episodes left to go. I will finish it but not recommend it to others.

Wholly agree with your assessment.

I suspect that the ending credits theme song will forever be a trigger.

Upon the entry of the final adoption decree, the adopted child is treated by Korean law as if he or she had been born to the adopting parents. The adopted child, therefore, gains the right to inherit from the adoptive parents and adoptive parents' relatives.

Most obstinate characters stubbornly refusing to change one's opinion or chosen course of action, despite attempts to persuade one to do so, or worse - - - continue to live in their own obsessively stupid, self-centered, ignorant world, are totally hopelessly unworthy of any attention, sympathy or even pity. Characters constantly making demands that are legally unenforceable like JH giving up his parental rights to be considered a grandson when he already has that status. Grandmother is the bedrock of a delusional family dynamic trapped in now abolished Joseon era blood line succession. It is so bad it is worse than a hate watch; it has become a rage watch.

The writer/PD/Network knew the babble being spewed is utter falsehoods but they went further to double down, triple down of the nonsensical narrative. TK and JH are the same, period. TK has no rights to TD daughter; he can’t force an adoption. JH cannot be forced to let TK adopt HN. Dropping a custody hearing is not the same as giving up parental rights. but the family whining angst never ends. If the show needs a final villain, I guess JH got the short end of the stick.

The only line in the show worthy of applause: JH: “I’m so sick of this family drama.”

“Rage watch” 👌🏽 a perfect description of what I am doing as well

In fact, it is now impossible to 'cancel' the adoption of JH by Strawberry precisely because Strawberry is dead (and she would not have agreed anyway even if still alive). Grandma has absolutely no say in the matter at all nor does anyone else. As you said- this show has completely lost it.

Rage watch is where I am right now as well. These last episodes have wasted time on utter drivel and at the expense of all of the side stories. We should have seen far more of the story of TK's older sister and her husband. We should have seen far more of the story of his older brother and sister-in-law- and YD's uncle. We should have seen a lot more of the story of Maknae, Soogyeum and her Young Father- and Soogyeum's mom. We should have seen more of the story of Se-jin and her Dad.

Instead, our time has been wasted on complete nonsense.

We should feel rage. These episodes are an insult to the viewers, and we ought to take offense at the way that the audience has been treated. Rage is actually a rational response to this insult to our intelligence.

For some reason, I couldnt just drop it, so I ended up watching episodes 47-48
The reaction of the family to the knowledge that Joon Ha is adopted didnt disappoint. "You knew this, and still pursued custody of Ha Neul and wanted to force registration". From the same document referenced by @welh earlier(https://www.international-divorce.com/family-registration-law-korea.htm), adopted children have the same rights as biological children, so, seriously, nothing changed. And what does any of this have to do with Ha Neul?
I dont know how many times they will show Joon Ha being manhandled by this family. From the preview it looks like he will get beat up some more next week. Am I supposed to feel happy that the bad guy is being dealt with? This family is a nightmare. Or the writer is.
And halmoeni. I spoke too soon when I said she was adorable. She appeared to agree with Joon Ha's claims on Ha Neul when she thought Joon Ha was bloodline. But when she learned that he was adopted, she was suddenly concerned that he hadnt changed diapers or that YD didnt trust him.
I was disappointed that JH decided to give up fighting for custody.
As @OldLawyer said above, I will finish it, but wouldnt recommend it.

I dont know how many times they will show Joon Ha being manhandled by this family.

Yes, let's list all the times JH was violent, shall we??

He slapped the face of. . . .uh, no that was YD and Chairman who slapped JH.😒
He used a cane to beat up. . . wait, that was Granny. 😒😒
In an elevator, he beat up. . . .hmmm, no that was YD's brother and mother that beat up JH. 😒😒😒
He kicked the shin of. . dang, that was Se Jin kicking JH in the shins. 😒😒😒😒
He grabbed YD's upper arm to force her out of. . . no, that was the Gong girls who did that to YD.
He DID punch TK twice. Big deal.

This is one reason of many that I dislike the writing for this show - violence and man-handling are not only okay but celebrated when the "good guys" use it against a "bad" person. I recognize that minor assault/violence is a mainstay of kdramas, and I would like to believe that writer-nim is poking fun at the viewers who celebrate it, but unfortunately he actually seems to support the idea that it's okay when the character isn't some upstanding citizen like the milquetoast TK, a corporate yes-boy like Chun Myong. or a hen-pecked husband like Hyun Woo (who was one of my favorite characters at one time).

Unhappy that in the end we do NOT know Joon-ha's family connection (because apparently legal adoption isn't good enough to be in the Gong family - you have to earn your way there by lying and deceiving everyone about an innocent baby) and still crossing fingers that Se Jin and Joon-ha have a happy ending that usually occurs in the last 10 minutes of these 50-episode monsters.

A real miracle has happened: I now have developed some real sympathy for JH. He is still an immature jerk, but no one deserves the physical abuse that he has endured.

When he says he is sick of this family that may be the most believable statement made in these last few episodes. He would be insane if he wasn't.

I would at least be wary. But it has long been obvious to me that this mess was not solely because of the writer and the PD. This has all the hallmarks of a show that was trifled with by the executives and possibly the demands of the stars. This show has been bent out of shape from what it was at the beginning.

This has all the hallmarks of a show that was trifled with by the executives and possibly the demands of the stars.

I picture a staff meeting , in a restaurant of course, with
a sea of empty soju bottles covering tables, several drunken arguments, people passed out, smell of vomit fills the air, two couples participate in PDAs with coworkers, prompting a huge fist fight.
The next day several staff members, both male and female, sport sunglasses covering black eyes.

That is how I see this K drama being written.

Exactly- while I do not have evidence to prove anything I have a suspicion that they may be part of what happened. However, I would also note that even with our male leads we are talking about stars who may have demanded more screen time that the story needed.

1

In a comment below, you said something about "male" stars demanding more time, but assuming you consider Jung Eui Jae to be one of the male stars, I don't see him doing that. This was a break-out role for him - he was humble in the videos and interviews - grateful to be in the drama. I imagine he is disappointed that his role was so caricatured until the last week or so.

However, rightly or wrongly, neither Baek Jin Hee nor Ahn Jae Hyun has ever appealed to me and their characters in this drama did not amuse or inspire.

I can't fathom what the KBS executives were thinking of.
Forums such as DramaBeans and kdrama sub/reddit actually experimented with setting up comment sections for the first time on a weekend drama. MDL comment #'s have been through the roof compared to the prior drama (Three Bold Siblings). And yet - TRHC's ratings in Korea are still way behind Three Bold Siblings which was never considered anything remarkable.

I know we will never learn what happened but I imagine it is a fascinating story of hubris, greed and ego.

While I was trying to be polite in fact it was the ML and not the 2 ML actor which I had in mind. Jung Eui-jae did a decent job with a character that was too narrowly drawn: I would like to see him in a role that affords greater range. He would probably do well.

THREE BOLD SIBLINGS really was not that special dramatically.

I actually believe the having a drama hangout for a weekender makes tremendous sense and I hope that it becomes a common practice. I would think that if nothing else that experiment has been successful: The three hangouts on DB for this weekender has generated well over nine hundred total comments and those comments have included a great deal of valuable information- this includes me being apprised of recent significant changes in Korean law which I had not been aware of.

Hubris, ego and greed are no doubt at the bottom of what happened.

Thanks for the clarification re: "male lead(s)". JEJ may not be nominated for any awards, but even people who hate the character are finally admitting that he has done a fine job once the script called for Joon-ha to do more than shout at TK.

I'm looking forward to reading your de-brief/autopsy once this mess is complete.

3

Thank you Kathryn51. I think that autopsy is the correct term for this.

3

“ I would like to see him in a role that affords greater range” —> now there is a drama I would definitely watch

They tore JH down completely.
I fast forwarded through most of episode 49. I just wanted to see what happens with JH. I wasn’t interested in any of the other characters, I’ve become so fed up with this show. Aside from some unnecessary prostration before the least deserving family in the history of the world, I didn’t see a lot.
Grandmas six hundred and seventy fifth volte face where she now decided she loves him again left me cold.
Everyone the writer seemed to want me to love, I hated with a passion. The only one they wanted me to hate, I liked. It may not be their fault, but I never want to see Baek Jin Hee or Ahn Jae Hyun again. And I will check writer/director of every show to ensure I skip this duo
I may skip episode 50. There is nothing there I want to see. It’s been fun only because of the beanies here that I had the opportunity to vent with, thank you all so much

1. Before filming began, writer-nim said 50% of the scripts were finished. During the 1st half of the drama, both JH and TK were portrayed as "grey" characters - neither was 100% saint or sinner (although clearly TK was the designated good guy) and both frequently did some self-reflection.
2. At the last minute, the original actor cast for TK dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. AJH - someone embroiled in a very messy and very PUBLIC divorce - came onboard literally a handful of weeks before filming started.
3. First half of drama (the 50% of completed scripts) - hints galore that TK and JH might be siblings. Episode 28 or 29 - Strawberry mentioned.
4. After Ep. 31/32, TK is now 100% Saint and JH is now 100% sinner.
5. My conspiracy? AJH wasn't willing to take on the role unless TK was 100% hero saint to counteract the bad publicity of his divorce. Or, perhaps the executive suite decided that he needed to be 100% hero so there would be no discussion of his messy personal life. Whatever, it fits my conspiracy theory. 😊
Thus, like you @Asha13, all of the characters we were to love - all of the characters that relentlessly beat up and man-handled Joon-ha - I hated as well. In order to redeem them, all they had to do was love TK. 😒😒

Me too- that would be so much more real dramatically and if the writer really wished to address the underlying social issues, then grey characters actually help as we are less likely to be distracted by our desire to See the Good Guys Triumph. Grey characters actually leave us emotionally better prepared to give the issues some serious thought.

As Kathryn51 points out there was a dramatic shift in this story at the midpoint- and I would note that this is when THE REAL HAS COME stopped being real and became unreal.

I Finished It. fifty episodes and the fiftieth continued to see this show pulling its punches and simply end with pablum. I have written a review, or more properly a post-mortem which I will post on the show review section id there is one- otherwise it will become only the second item that I post to my Fan Wall.

The only real success of this show was in demonstrating that a Drama Hangout can be useful and successful with a weekender. The three hangouts together garnered over nine hundred thirty total comments. A great deal of useful information was exchanged in those comments. I hope that we will get the same opportunity with the next weekender.

I am so glad that we were able to demonstrate the demand was there for a weekender hangout. I think you, me and Tabong discussing Three Brave siblings probably helped and it was great that we had your post on how to view weekenders. I think post encouraged other beanies to jump in to the discussion so a hangout was just a seamless continuation of the discussion with a live case in point. It was unfortunate that this drama turned from an interesting example of what a weekender can do into such a nightmare!

I also hope the hangout for weekenders becomes a regular feature and that it is as well used as this one was but that all the beanies can be sharing a more positive watch experience. Hopefully, the next weekender will be a standout like Once Again.

Hopefully the link will work if not google Wooga squad and you see the pictures of the friends and the details on the reality tv show In the Soop: Friendcation where they go on a weekend away together and we get to go along with them.

They are the original friendship group who became their own family. So @seeker described the DB community as a variation on this theme and I loved it so much I added it to my tagline

https://www.koreaboo.com/stories/bts-v-met-wooga-squad-friends-park-seo-joon/

2

Sorry the original response I typed disappeared. I think it is because I included a link to an article about the original Wooga squad actors and idols so hopefully this will come through as there is no link and you can google Wooga squad to see who they are and how their friendship became a found ‘family’. Cera described the DB community as being like a family and came up with the phrase DB Wooga squad I loved it so much I had to include it in my tagline.
I hope that helps.

2

Sorry the original response also mentioned the reality show In the Soop: Friendcation where the Wooga squad spend a weekend together. I don't watch reality tv or game shows but that show and The Young actors retreat were great watches. Both these shows were covered in the weecaps.

1

@asha13 sorry I forgot to tag you into the responses to your question. See above.

1

@reply1988 thank you for the detailed response

1

@asha13

My favorite-ist trope ever is of a found family - which K-dramas has in troves and IRL ... pretty scarce.

The fun, amazing and incredibly supportive DB community really made me feel warm, fuzzy and so very "heard".

“Woori-ga gajok-inga?” (Are we family?) My answer to that is yes we are the DB family - the DB wooga squad!!

Mother Bean took it upon herself to publicize this term throughout DB, which I am greatful for.

2

Your thoughtful replies that always made me pause and reassure my conclusions are one of the few positives from this hangout. @welh ‘s dee knowledge of Korean law and @kathryn51 ‘s imaginative and entertaining post were others. Thank you!

1

@oldawyer and @asha13, thanks for the compliments but I came to the DB hang-out late and relied heavily on your prior analysis and thoughts to try and understand what the heck was happening in KBS kdramaland.

Another plus - DB'ers didn't knee-jerk hate Joon-ah or worship TK.

Before I completely turn my back on family dramas, I'm going to give OldLawyer's 8 episode rule a try with Live Your Own Life mainly because I just discovered that Ha Joon is the ML but also there is a large supporting cast and apparently multiple stories (family; corporate; possible mystery). Hoping DB will have a hangout.

3

@kathryn51 do you know where live your own life will air? I’m not seeing it on Viki or netflix

1

Nm. Found it on Viki. Search didn’t work for some reason

1

LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE now shows on Viki's "new and upcoming" page

2

The hangout has been great. It’s been wonderful to be able to discuss what happening in the show and gave a positive aspect to the experience even when the show went off the rails.

TRHC will go down in history as a blueprint of how NOT to produce a weekender:

Terrible script.
Terrible direction.
Terrible casting.
Terrible to zombie acting.
Terrible pace (with two mind-boggling time skips to avoid actresses showing pregnancies)
Criminal misinformation on the state of Korean laws and practices.
Record smashing use of “I’m sorry” dialog.
Schizophrenic character behavior changes from episode to episode.
Total lack of chemistry, understanding or common sense between family members.

Weekenders are supposed to be about families. But neither family had any foundational integrity. The members were either hysterical stereotypes or bland, cardboard characters. Characters were devoid of any intelligence, common sense or emotional stability. The script was so flawed by misinformation, factually wrong legal and business principles, and repetitive B.S. The ML and FL lead had zero chemistry. They acted like they were leads in an elementary school play.

Here is the ridiculous plot example: How can Yoo-Myung and Dong-wook "date" for more than 3 years without their families knowing when Soo-Gyeom knows? One can suspend belief in a fantasy show but one cannot suspend disbelief here.

I only watched a third of the show so I cannot or want to claim a Bean. What is the opposite of a Bean? A weed? A rock?

7

What a fabulous summation. I would note that for the first half of the show the script was very well and tightly written- and then it is very obvious that the top brass interfered and required changes that bent this story completely out of shape. The story we got was not even close to the story the writer meant to write.

The casting was flawed from the beginning.

How about a thorn as the opposite of a bean?

Could we go with a grain of sand as the opposite of a bean because it’s small and seemingly insignificant but wherever it ends up even one grain ruins whatever it gets into and is really irritating.
