[Beanie Recs] Like Destined With You, but not

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. Each week we’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short. Respond below!

Hello wise Beanies! I was super hyped for Destined With You, but while I love lots of things about it, there are other things that just aren’t working for me. I absolutely adore fantasy romances though, so what can I use as a replacement? Both bittersweet and happy endings are fine as long as they make sense. Thanks!

**typing now with knife through my heart**

I’d say Mystic Pop-Up Bar for this “fated fantasy” type of situation. This latter drama is more episodic than DWY, but maybe that sort of change is what the OP is looking for.

Fantasy in a modern world with some flashbcks in the post and with a romance :

- Hotel Del Luna
- Goblin
- Extraordinary You (but it's highschool theme)

Sageuks with fantasy and romance :
- Arang and the Magistrate

I recommend Tomorrow With You. A lot of beanies didn't like the time element, but I thought it was an excellent portrayal of how couples marry without really knowing each other, and how they learn to truly love only after living and struggling together. The ML believes he can change his destiny by learning more about the FL, keeps getting more and more involved with her to change their destinies, and only changes things after he accepts that he can't control fate, but should appreciate their precious time together instead.

Tomorrow with You also has some good angst with a down-on-her-luck FL, and an ML who's a jerk to her at first

I really enjoyed Tomorrow With You. I think part of it was because Shin Mina and Lee Je-hoon had off-the-charts chemistry.

I think you are right! I really enjoyed it too and the chemistry was sooooooooooo good! But then, Shin Mina and Lee Je-hoon are both really good!

From Now On, Showtime! It does this trope SO WELL.

I think this would be the best match for Destined With You. Modern rom-com with a dash of the past lives stuff. FL with a normal job. ML who is sort of egotistical and standoffish, but also hilarious when he needs to be. Some wacky humor, but with warmer characters than in Destined With You. It has a one-note antagonist killer dude which sort of drags it down a bit in the final quarter, but overall the series was a lot of fun.

Also very important to note is that it stuck the landing with the ending.

I would have recommended Heartbeat if it weren't for the ending that traumatized us all.

I stopped watching DWY last week and started watching From Now On, Showtime! instead, so I totally second all of this. Like you mentioned, there's a lot of warmth in the drama. Really enjoying it so far!

It not only develops the current life romance well (I would argue better than DWY with you does), it does a great job with the past life romance and getting us invested even in that. I told my husband I felt like I was watching a period drama during the flashbacks. Plus it has a great OST and is actually really humorous (I would say, of all Kdramas, the humor made me laugh more than cringe)

The antagonist totally a pulled a page out of Goblin ... but fun fact I liked the switch and bait in Showtime better ...

It's weird that Heartbeat I was sooo invested in the FL not being the reincarnated lover, when in DWY and FNOS I want the reincarnated lovers together because THEY HAVE TO BE TOGETHER, IT'S DESTINY. Guess I'm fickle!

Maybe that beanie could give a try to Live Up to your name (time travel + good couple + a bit of History).

The first prompt that came to mind: Kiss Sixth Sense.
Just...ignore the last 30 minutes of the final episode.

Splash Splash Love.
My Love From the Star.
Faith.
If you can stand it, The King : Eternal Monarch.
Mr. Queen.

"Fantasy romance" is a very broad term but sticking with just contemporary romances with fantasy elements here are some I enjoyed:

- Perfume
- While You were Sleeping
- W: Two Worlds
- I Hear Your Voice
- Queen In Hyun’s Man

Nine
Extraordinary you
Angels Last Mission:Love

The above three are far from perfect but the central romances make them worth watching imo.

Dont be put out off by the High School setting of Extraordinary you, it actually has a lot of depth and explores the issue of existentialism quite well.

I was about to say The King Eternal Monarch but saw that they also wanted it to make sense.

So Goblin?

Well if you want more Jo Bo-ah, I’d recommend TALE OF THE NINE TAILED and if you like that you can also check out the sequel TALE OF THE NINE TAILED 1938, which makes less sense but is waaaay more fun

Also SURPLUS PRINCESS, it was basically the blueprint to WELCOME TO WAIKIKI. Our protagonist is a mermaid who took a potion to become human and has a 100 days to find love otherwise she’ll disappear. It’s a fun wacky romp with plenty of parody, the ending is questionable but overall I enjoyed it

This Beanie might try The Legend of the Blue Sea if they haven't already seen it! It might have been my first K-drama (I didn't have a system for keeping track at that point, ugh), and I think it was responsible for jump-starting my love of the intertwined past lives/reincarnated lovers trope. This is my favorite Lee Min Ho drama, and it has the luminous and dynamic Jun Ji Hyun. It's a fish out of water tale (Lol) with the story of their past lives slowly unfolding in tandem with their present. Con artists, mermaids, a lovely romance, and a lovely ending - it has it all!

The Legend of the Blue Sea is one of my favorites... thank you for writing so beautifully what I feel but cannot express as well as you!

I liked each and every trope ... was my first time seeing that peacock feather hat ... now I think no one can carry it off as well as Min-ho.

Jun Ji-hyun and Jo Jung-suk were so cute and my most favorite scene ever ...

Aww thank you Cera! 😊 ❤️ One of the things I loved about Legend of the Blue Sea is that it was a trope smorgasbord, but in a really fun and natural way. It has alllll the tropes!! 😁 It's one that I'd like to do a rewatch of sometime.

* Queen In Hyun's Man and Splish Splash Love has both the time slip fantasy romance.
* Goblin has different kinds of romance - destined for each other, bickering bromance and the angsty kind.
* Tale of the Nine Tailed 1 & 2 has the hundress of years romance a lot of fantasy romance but my fave here is the bromance.
* Master's Sun has the touchy feely kind of fantasy romance but more on supernatural.
