News bites: September 19, 2023

  • As we countdown the days until next week’s premiere, Disney+ has us questioning the issue of trust in the newest character posters for The Worst of Evil, showcasing our conflicted trio: Ji Chang-wook (If You Wish Upon Me), Wie Ha-joon (Little Women), and Im Se-mi (Duty After School). Come September 27, we’ll be thrown into the dark underbelly of 1990s Gangnam with writing by Jang Min-seok (Secret Reunion) and co-directing by filmmaker Han Dong-wook (Man in Love) and PD Park Geun-beom. • The promos have kicked off for Coupang Play’s Once Upon a Boyhood (previously Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), giving us our first look at the action-comedy’s leads: Im Shi-wan (Summer Strike), Lee Sun-bin (Work Later, Drink Now 2), Lee Shi-woo (See You in My 19th Life), and Kang Hye-won (Seasons of Blossom). Coming to our screens before the year ends, PD Lee Myung-woo (One Ordinary Day, The Fiery Priest) is leading production. [Sports Donga]

  • Making the jump from tvN to TVING, the Forest of Secrets spin-off Good or Bad Dong-jae has been slotted to release in 2024, with Lee Jun-hyuk’s (Dark Hole) character Seo Dong-jae taking center stage in the story. On the production side, original series writer Lee Soo-yeon (Grid) is in a creative role while PD Park Gun-ho is at the helm. Scripts are being penned by Hwang Ha-jung and Kim Sang-won. [News1]
  • Wavve has been preparing their 2024 lineup as well and confirmed that I, a Gangster, Became a High School Student (roughly translated) will be launching early next year. Starring Yoon Chan-young (Delivery Man), Golden Child’s Bong Jae-hyun (Twinkling Watermelon), and Lee Seo-jin (Behind Every Star), the body-swap fantasy is written by Jung Da-hee with PD Lee Sung-taek attached to direct. [Osen]

  • In the meantime, the dark days of The Goryeo-Khitan War begin this November on KBS and the new poster takes us straight into the turmoil with our hero sitting amid the palace ruins. Headlined by Kim Dong-joon (More Than Friends) and Choi Su-jong (My Only One), production for the sageuk is in the hands of PD Jeon Woo-sung (Strongest Deliveryman), PD Kim Han-sol (Imjin War 1592), and writer Lee Jung-woo (The King of Tears, Lee Bang-won). [News1]
  • A new poster is out for MBN’s upcoming A Perfect Marriage as well, which stars Jung Yoo-min (Celebrity) and Sung Hoon (Woori the Virgin) at the center of a large ensemble cast. Helmed by PD Oh Sang-won (Love ft. Marriage & Divorce III) with scripts by Im Seo-ra (Feel Good to Die), the melodrama premieres next month on October 28. [Sports Kyunghyang]

A Perfect Marriage: I have started the webtoon, you know, for research purposes, and now... now I'm 50 episodes later. 😆🙈

That webtoon is absolutely ridiculous, its like reading a makjang.

Its fun in both the best and the worst possible way, i hope the drama doesn't make too many changes to the story.

Like pretty much all revenge webcomics, I lost interest and dropped it. I might check out the drama though since it will probably be faster paced.

Makjang’s not my thing, but that last poster is. It sort of visually shouts RELATIONSHIP DRAMA. What with the ominous clock tick-tick-ticking time away behind our wedding couple who is, at the same time, rending back a paper-like cover revealing all of the taciturn family issues just waiting to break free—not the least of which are the two, glaaaaaring women in the very foreground, bookending what’s gonna be trouuuubbbllleee.

It’s like I‘ve watched it already! Saved myself 15.75 hours :)

Oh, the most recent news about the latest Lee Jae-Wook/Jo Bo-Ah's drama is not included here?

Fine, I will save my comments for later, because let's just say I'm quite *furious* frustrated about it!

FYI. On my list of possible 2024 sageuks and period dramas I have Lee Jae-wook’s upcoming Netflix sageuk TANGEUM/HONG RANG at No. 7.
No. 6. Jeon Jong-seo’s upcoming TVING sageuk QUEEN WOO.
No. 8 (Now) Go Ara’s upcoming TVING sageuk THE LOVE STORY OF CHOON HWA.

Reminder. There are reports that QUEEN WOO will only be available in the US on Paramount+ which may be a bad omen for US availability for CHOON HWA since TVING may decide also to release that drama on Paramount+. Just speculating. That is my chronic availability angst flaring up.

Dong-Jae was one of the best parts of FoS for me, so even though spin-offs aren't my favorite I'll totally check this out if it means seeing more of that exasperating weasel 😜

"Exasperating weasel!" 😂 I hope he lives up - or down - to that epithet. In a show full of scene-stealers, Lee Jun-hyuk was the Thief in Chief.

I just want to know if the weasel's turn on center stage means it's more or less likely we will see a third season of FOS.

My wife and I are really looking forward to THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR. We get far too few Pre-Joseon Sageuks.

This will also fulfill my prayer to the drama gods for another show from the writer of KING OF TEARS: LEE BANGWON. I hope we get many more after this.

Well must say i'm quite sad that Lee Soo-yeon isin't behind the writing of Good or Bad Dong-jae as i think all of us believed to be...
I'm quite excited for Once Upon a Boyhood or Boys' Generation...
