News bites: October 25, 2023

  • Colorfully fun new posters have dropped for KBS’s upcoming The Matchmakers and we finally get a peek at some of the supporting cast, who round out our story’s Joseon-scape. With Kim Ro-woon (Destined With You) and Jo Yi-hyun (All of Us Are Dead) headlining the saguek rom-com, the series will be launching on October 30. [News1]

  • Also evoking the tone of their series, ENA’s new poster for Tell Me You Love Me has a quiet warmth with Jung Woo-sung (Fly Dragon) and Shin Hyun-bin (Reborn Rich) as our leads. Premiering next month in November, the melodrama is helmed by PD Kim Yoon-jin (Our Beloved Summer) with scripts by Kim Min-jung (The Sound of Magic). [News1]

  • Over on TVING, preparations are underway to soon bring Death’s Game to our screens and the team announced that the fantasy will be streaming internationally on Amazon Prime. Starring Seo In-gook (Cafe Minamdang) and Park So-dam (Record of Youth) amid an impressive (and attractive) lineup, the webtoon adaptation will be releasing this December. [Xports News]
  • Lee Bong-ryun (Destined With You) has been added to the cast of tvN’s The Not Yet Wise Resident Life, joining the ensemble cast led by Go Yoon-jung (Moving), Shin Shi-ah (The Witch: Part 2), and Kang Yoo-seok (Black Knight) among other rising talents. The Hospital Playlist spin-off is expected to broadcast early next year. [KBS]

  • Speaking of medical dramas, Netflix’s Daily Dose of Sunshine has added a new batch of stills to our prescription as we await for the premiere next week. With Park Bo-young (Doom at Your Service), Yeon Woo-jin (Thirty-Nine), Jang Dong-yoon (Oasis), and Lee Jung-eun (Missing: The Other Side 2) taking charge of our story, the series will be releasing its 12 episodes on November 3. [Xports News]
  • SBS’s My Demon has some stills for us as well, with our human-demon pair Kim Yoo-jung (Lovers of the Red Sky) and Song Kang (Forecasting Love and Weather) walking down the aisle in contract matrimony. Written by Choi Ah-il (Mr. Queen) with PD Kim Jang-han (You Raise Me Up, Do You Like Brahms) directing, the fantasy premieres on November 24. [SBS]

I love the pretty poster for Tell Me You Love Me!
I love photos with sunsets/sunrise.

Not feeling the one for My Demon. For some reason the story is giving me Doom At Your Service vibes but with contract marriage.

1. That poster on the left gives me a headache to look at omg.

2. I still fear this one will just be kind of bland, but the poster is pretty.

3. I just saw a full cast list on Reddit and holy SHIT that cast is stacked. I can’t even imagine how they got all of those actors in one drama. Doesn’t sound like what I usually go for but I will definitely check it out.

4. Honestly not sure if I really need more HosPlay, but we’ll see how I feel by the time it airs.

5. I really hope this one is good! It seems to be tackling the subject matter in an interesting way.

6. Yeah, still not all that interested in this one.

1) So here all the futur couples for this show! There is Oh Ye-Ju, she was cute in Under The Queen's Umbrella. There is one girl who seems to look at Rowoon, so second female lead? I like the Cho Yi-Hyun's skirt, it's different.

2) It looks really good. I hope Shin Hyun-Bin won't be too disapointing.

3) I'm curious about this one with so many actors for the same role.

4) I will just think as a new medical drama instead of spin-of of HP.

5) It looks really interesting! Netflix Doona! was disapointing, so I have a lot of hopes for this one!

6) It looks like a very typical and fun Kdrama. Contract marriage is such a funny trope!

So far the posters and stills for the dramas I am tempted to watch are still giving a green light but we all know the dark twist is rarely revealed in the posters. Thankfully, the hints are usually weaved in from the first episode so we will hopefully get the true feel then.

Daily Dose of Sunshine is calling out to me. It has a solid cast and different field of focus for a medical drama.

Also that "magical realism" vibe is something very fresh.

1. Liking this poster much better than the previous ones. I do wish Rowoon's hanbok colours were more... colourful. He'd look so good in them!

2. The natural lighting is gorgeous, but I remain deeply skeptical of this drama. J-drama adaptations don't really have the best track record and I am still traumatized by Shin Hyun-bin's horrible performance in Reborn Rich.

3. Insane fucking line-up, but as always, I'm here first and foremost for my beloved Seo In-guk.

4. I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of a Hospital Playlist spin-off, but I've always been a sucker for a Lee Woo-jung + Shin Won-ho project, so chances are I'll change my tune completely by next year.

5. TW: "healing drama." Please for the love of god actually be a dose of sunshine because I'm pretty certain it won't be.

6. So much pretty in a one frame. Acting skills aside, I always knew objectively that Song Kang was attractive; I seen the swooning online and in-person from drama-watching friends, but I never really got the appeal until now. Idk what's special about these stills, but it's doing it for me. Maybe it's the hair?
Kim Yoo-jung remains stunning as always. Excited for how goofy this will be. I just hope we don't get overwhelmed by chaebol nonsense.

Certainly the hair, it greatly elevates him from his usual cute but not really striking baby boy look.

1. The colors make those posters look like they're advertising a Halloween party.

3. I've only seen SIG in Master's Sun, so among the million reasons I'm hoping this is good is the chance to find out what the big deal is about him.

6. Song Kang seems to have borrowed the too-big-at-the-collar look from the manager character in My Lovely Liar, and it doesn't look any better on him than it did on Yun Ji-on. It seems awkward rather than intentional. The hair is gorgeous. And I doubt it's a coincidence how much Kim Yoo-jung is styled to resemble Han So-hee. I smell chaebol makjangery, though I'd love to be wrong.

Big collar and nothing under, it's weird for a daily life. And in the trailer, he was wearing a vest that looks like the awful ones Park Seo-Joon had to wear for Chanel and made him looking like the late Queen.

2

6. Impractical, yes. But he's an uber-sexy, immortal demon so I give it a pass unlike with Yoon Ji-on in My Lovely Liar. And I do think it fits Song Kang's more model-like figure better than YJO. I don't really see the Han So-hee resemblance personally, but you might be on to something.

3

For the 1), it reminds me the beams's colors in the Korean palaces.

2

@kurama lol))) It truly takes an exceptional man to look good in THAT kind of Chanel... I can name a few tho^^

3

1's poster is full of colors...and love.
2. The poster is somewhat calming. I've been looking forward to this since it's announcement.

I'm not excited to see 4, but I want to see what led to that guy screaming in the pool.

1 - those posters are VERY colorful and busy. Not much anything else yet...
6 - someone pls remind the dude that they're supposed start with a passionless CONTRACT marriage, because the way he glares at her is nothing business-like so far lol.

No. 5. DAILY DOSE OF SUNSHINE (Netflix). I will be there for Jang Dong-yoon. His terrific performance earlier this year in KBS’s OASIS (Viki US) made it my favorite JDY drama. I have no doubt he will be great in DDOS. (All that JOESON EXORCIST unpleasantness in well in the past now.)

O/T. I may be even more interested in Jang Dong-yoon’s upcoming FLOWERS BLOOM EVEN IN THE SAND which takes place in the world of ‘ssireum’ (traditional wrestling). I know from OASIS, JDY is in fantastic shape. Reports are it may also be in Netflix next year.

quick question is Oasis good enough to watch or is it great but all angst?

Definitely KBS’s OASIS (Viki US) is worth watching. The story is of three young people (yes there is a love triangle) living through the turbulent 1980s-90s. Like KBS’s YOUTH OF MAY (2021) one can learn of South Korean history of the time and like in YOM it can be difficult to watch at times but it is not all angst.
I loved JDY’s relationship with his conmen/woman band of brothers/sister. He was great with an ensemble cast.
Jang Dong-yoon’s physicality (fights) was outstanding in OASIS. I put him right in there with the BOODHOUNDS (Netflix) boys Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-gi and D.P.’s (Netflix) Jung Hae-in.

I forgot to mention that JDY in the first half was required to have the most awful hair cut. Lol he was a good sport about it.
Just google: Jang Dong Yoon Oasis and you will see what I am talking about.
