Kim Hee-sun invites us to MBC’s comedy-thriller Our House

Kim Hee-sun, Lee Hye-young

As we head towards the end of 2023 (already!), a fresh new crop of dramas are being planted for the new year and MBC announced that the screwball comedy and thriller Our House (previously Gaslighting) has been added to their 2024 lineup.

Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires) stars as celebrity personality Noh Young-won, a famed family psychologist with the picture-perfect life, magically balancing both work and family. Does she have secrets? Of course, this is dramaland after all. But with one mysterious incident, Young-won’s secrets tornado their way back into her life, threatening to endanger her happiness and loved ones.

With their family pushed to the plank, Young-won is unable to protect them on her own, forcing her to team up with her gruff mother-in-law Lee Hye-young (Big Bet), playing Hong Sa-kang. Nicknamed Korea’s Agatha Christie, Sa-kang is a popular mystery-thriller novelist and is fiercely devoted to her one and only son.

Enter Kim Nam-hee (Family: The Unbreakable Bond) as said son, named Choi Jae-jin. Although it isn’t stated, I would guess that Jae-jin must be hiding things as well because – so far – his character sounds too good to be true. Described as a doting husband and an understanding dad, Jae-jin is also a well-respected doctor.

Rounding out the main cast, we don’t yet know much about Yeonwoo (Numbers) in the role of Lee Se-na. All we’re told is that she’s very guarded, veiled in ~mystery~ and secrets.

On the production side, directing for the black comedy is helmed by PD Lee Do-hyun (Doctor Lawyer, She Knows Everything) with scripts penned by Nam Ji-yeon (So I Married an Anti-fan). Slated to premiere in 2024, MBC’s Our House will be airing in the weekend slot.

I’m sorry—not sorry—to say this, but the absolute most exciting thing about this news story was @tccolb’s headline. I was all, “OOH!” but then after actually reading the description, I was all, “Boo.” 😔

Kim Hee Sun + Lee Hye Young as her halmoni? DAEBAK!
I've only seen KHS in *Tomorrow* as the boss reaper and I'm excited to see another side to her!

KHS was amazing in “Tomorrow” and I loved her hair do/cut and colour. She was formidable.

@kmoon: Her mother in law isn’t her halmoni but is her 시어머니 (shiomoni - written phonetically).

I was loving all the bites here (Kim Hee-sun x Lee Hye-young) until "Although it isn’t stated, I would guess that Jae-jin must be hiding things as well because – so far – his character sounds too good to be true. Described as a doting husband and an understanding dad, Jae-jin is also a well-respected doctor."
Kim Nam-hee is playing this son so I'm going to try my best to sit in on at least the premiere week or four episodes, for him. Should it turn out to be like Trolley or Lies Hidden In My Garden secret and not Family: The Unbreakable Bond secret, I'm off, inspite of the lovable/stellar cast.

I am trying to picture a comedy thriller and wondering can both genres work well together or will one over shadow the other. I think Family the unbreakable bond is a good example as I came in for the comedy and left because of the terrible subs but stayed away even when they improved as the thriller element took over.

I do wish it was just a screwball comedy, but hopefully it'll be a bit like Kidnapping Day in tone?

When you squeeze in comedy, thriller and Agatha Christie in close proximity then it can only mean one thing - a stand-up comedian who works as a stunt double in movies but is actually a wait-for-it Serial Killer.
Kim Hee-sun - I will do anything for love, but I won't do that. Pass - until Beanie recommendations point to PMR level makjang.
