Live Your Own Life: Episodes 24-25 (Drama Highlights)

What a week! I already knew things were going to go wrong for Hyo-shim — not that things ever went right — when Tae-ho practically threatened her into becoming her boyfriend. “If you don’t give me an answer, I’ll go to the gym and cause a scene.” Sigh. I don’t know, Show, if you think I’m going to root for Tae-ho because he’s the “male lead” and he encourages Hyo-shim to put herself first, you thought wrong. When it comes to the romance department, Tae-ho comes off just as obnoxious as Tae-min, and that’s totally on the writing. I’m convinced this writer doesn’t know how to write a decent romance — or even decent characters. I’m still not fully aboard the Hyo-joon × Mi-rim pairing, and I rolled my eyes at Hyo-do’s “I love you” to Tae-hee after he found out that she’s Taesan Group’s daughter.

Speaking of Taesan, Sook-hyang spins Chairman Kang’s hospitalization into a “Tae-min has to marry Soo-kyung to stop TV Live from poking their nose into Tae-ho’s parents’ death” lecture. Sook-hyang claims that Chairman Kang went after Tae-ho’s father that fateful night, but Chairman Kang insists that despite what everyone thinks, he didn’t kill his brother. Somehow, I believe him. And I don’t believe Sook-hyang is as innocent of the crime as she claims to be. Sook-hyang also sends for Hyo-shim, and asks for her price tag — but it’s not a “stay away from my son” offer, it’s an offer for Hyo-shim to be Tae-min’s mistress. WTH!? At this point, Hyo-shim is done with Tae-min, and she breaks up with Tae-ho, too. Unfortunately, Hyo-shim has no choice but to turn to Tae-min for help after Soo-kyung sues the gym — and slaps the trainer involved, and Hyo-shim — for leaking some of her private workout pictures.

Tae-min manages to get Soo-kyung to drop the lawsuit in exchange for setting up a “serious conversation” with her about what she really wants from him. It’s marriage, duh! But Hyo-shim can’t relate to that because her mom insists that she prioritize supporting Hyo-joon over things like dating. Tsk. Hyo-shim flares up at her mom because she’s tired of putting her life on hold to cater for everyone else, and this sentiment makes her miss the one person who insists she prioritize herself above others: Tae-ho. The week ends with Tae-ho issuing another threat to Hyo-shim: “Come out to meet me or I’ll move back to the U.S.” Okay, bye! It’s his consistency for me. And the show rewards his bad behavior with a romantic snowfall setting, and a kiss with Hyo-shim. I just can’t. For what it’s worth, we’re officially at the halfway mark. Maybe this pairing will manage to win me over in the second half of the show. Although I doubt it very much.

The thing is @unit HyoShim is such a duffer that she will stay in a funk in any self-damaging situation until she is literally threatened with consequences. TaeHo seems to have understood that well. So he gives her threats to prod her into taking action. The feminist in me bristles at some of the things he does or says, but then one part of my mind also says that HyoShim is too dumb to be left to her own devices. The idiot needs to be told that she can let the restaurant staff get her water 😒

All in all, this was the best episode yet. The writers finally decided to start the story at halfway mark 🙄 What made me sit up was HyoShim finally seeing her mother for what she is and telling her like it is! The old hag will not let HyoShim get away from her clutches easily, and TaeHo will have to use all his charm/threats to make sure that HyoShim doesn't give in to her.

I felt really sorry for TaeMin this week. He has to contend with a manipulative mother as well as the vengeful Anchorwoman. TaeHo has also told him that HyoShim is his girlfriend. All this on top of his father being hospitalized. And he has a whole ass company to run. I'm surprised the guy is still standing!

I can't with Mom! Hyoshim is always at the last place... Taeho may have a special sense of humour and push a bit, but he does have Hyoshim's needs on mind... and feeds her meat and chicken soup 🙂

Ha, I was thinking the same, half way and we may finally get the story. 😄

TaeHo has also told him that HyoShim is his girlfriend.

TH fights dirty. He tells TM to stay away from HyoShim and a few days later TH demands to know if TM has called HS to apologize. Which is it? Stay away or not?

But the look on TH's face when HS called Tae Min for help - absolutely priceless. 😂😂

There is an old saying that too many cooks spoil the broth. Here, HS, TM and TH are so into self-pity that their excessive, self-absorbed unhappiness over one's own troubles spoils any chance of any character development, growth or a reasonable story line.

I came to LYOL solely because of Ha Joon, but staying for the actual plots and stories.

However, Hajoon continues to entertain - two of my favorite scenes this weekend were (1) Tae-ho's confused face when Hyo-seong tripped him and (2) the aforementioned shocked face when hyo Shim phoned Tae Min. He really is a good actor.

Uee does not impress.

UEE is Old Love, from Birdie Buddy times (and she was excellent in Marriage Contract for example), Ha Joon is New Love. 😊

I'm still on the lookout as to which week installment I'll resume from. But it seems like there's no exact improvement.

I'm not charmed by the Tae-cousins. They're both being pushy. But I do like Soo-kyung taking away Tae-min's attention even if it's for one minute. But I don't like the angle they're going with her character. She's becoming the exact replica of what he's running away from - his mother. She might have the tuff to stand firm against Sook-hyang should she get married to Tae-min, it doesn't excuse what she's becoming. Tae-min deserves better, she deserves better characterization.

I knew the boy's language would change the moment he knew she was Tae-san Group's daughter. I don't think I'll like this leech-y guy.

I kinda agree with @kdramatipsy about Tae-ho's actions. I felt the same way about one of the romances in Our Blues. Should Hyo-shim be left alone, she won't sit herself up properly by the time she gains independence. I look forward to Tae-ho's threats in the event where her family wants to squeeze her once again.

The romance here is lacking a lot. For a weekender, it is really suffering.

I absolutely understood why was TV lady upset about those leaked photos. That trainer was just plain stupid for posting them. But the slapping? No. That's where they went down with her character. A pity.

Unfortunately, as you know, slapping is a standard K-drama way of demonstrating serious anger. I do not approve either, but I recognize the standard K-drama practice, just as I am sure you do also.

But what we have to appreciate is that in fact this is not just a matter of some embarrassment to Ms. Choi. It is seriously damaging to her professionally- remember that she noted that if the pictures had been posted five years before that she would have had to resign from her position (Note: Being the daughter of the Charman would not have been enough to protect her position). She is established enough now to weather the storm but is still damaged, nevertheless. This is not just about being personally offended by someone's stupidity- she has genuinely been hurt.

In short, this is a really big deal. No, Ms. Choi was not being a vengeful harpy- she was treating a serious matter very seriously.

When Tae-min asks her to drop the matter he is in fact asking her for an extremely big. It is a measure of how very much Ms. Choi actually values Tae-min that she is willing to strike a bargain: She will drop the matter if only he will actually sit down with her and have a true, in-depth conversation about themselves and the possibility of marriage. She is not demanding that he marry her as the price of dropping it- just to actually have a serious conversation that is deeper than the knee jerk brush offs that he has given her so far. In short, she has trading away something of real value to her just to get him to really talk to her.

To me, the very fact that she could think that objectively about what she really wants and values at a moment of genuine and legitimately justified anger says some very positive things about her character. Very few people could do that in her situation. This is the moment we are really starting to see the kind of person that Ms. Choi is. She is completely unlike any of the other women in this show.

That's why I understood why she was upset. On the other hand, why would the trainer post such obviously embarrassing pictures, especially if she claims she is a fan, is beyond my understanding. 🙄 Lazy writing?
Slapping Hyoshim is still NO.

Anyway, let's wait and see for that actual talk - will we get two adults talking or some makjang cornering?

I think the trainer posted those photos in a closed online group of friends. Someone there leaked them. It was still stupid of course.

"will we get two adults talking or some makjang cornering?" You have posed the essential, fundamental question. Given that the drama had to change because of the illness (and then death) of our original Chairman I have had to cut the writer some slack. I am hoping that we do not get the lazy makjang cornering answer. Given that Ms. Choi has given something of value, because the lawsuit would have helped restore her reputation by emphasizing to the public that the pictures were taken without her consent, the correct answer would be two adults talking. The other answer would be lazy writing indeed.

1

I really do not see Ms. Choi as being at all like Tae-min's mother. Actually, only now are we even beginning to see her real character.

As for Hyo-do: He is too much like his mother. He learned it all from her, including the unreal view of the world.

I was again this close to dropping the show, but I'm still going to give it a chance next weekend, because Hyoshim is apparently FINALLY going to move out.
And I admit I liked the scenes between Hyojun and Mirim. 🙂

Last week I wrote that I was watching a different drama from @quirkycase because she fully supports the TH/HS pairing. And now @unit weighs in with a completely different perspective, one that I happen to share.

Is TH’s goal to help her become 'independent" from her family? Or is it to separate her from her family so that he has her all to himself? He's trying to take over her life in a way that TM never did - buying her clothes, the facial, an incredibly UN-professional modeling contract, not letting her cook the meat and then the final threat. He wants her dependent upon him - not a good foundation for an "independent" life.

There are so many hints that this pairing is headed for trouble, first and foremost that Dating A Client Is Forbidden. If I understood the subs correctly, the TS Fitness CEO is okay with "flirting" but NOT dating. Her co-workers have warned her. Her mother warned her. Her oldest brother warned her.

However, episodes 24 and 25 delivered on so many other fronts. Tae Min finally turns away from Hyo Shim - he loves her but finally understands that between Mother Villain #1 and apparently Villainess-in-Training (and I am very upset by that turn of events), the best way he can love her is to leave her alone. However – I’m glad because I never understood that insta-love the writer created.

My favorite couple Hyo-jun and Mi-rim have entered The Friendzone - a mutual support relationship.

Finally – much more information about the Kang family past history 3-4 years ago.

Ratings for Sunday’s episode (No. 25) were 18.8 – finally eclipsed the previous high of Episode 2. I think writer-nim knows what she is doing.

Barely watchable now. FFing through 75% of it. This should be the point where our annoying characters should start resembling human beings and showing us that they're capable of being family you can count on. Does the writer actually think Hyo-do and Tae-hee can be an item when he's looking at her like a bag of easy money after all that time they've spent together? I suspect the writer will try to "redeem" him by having him stay with her after the family is torn to pieces for Tae-ho's parents' murder.

Will Hyo-shim's blowup at her mom really result in anything? Getting beat up by loan sharks for loans my bro and mom had taken out should have been a breaking point. Finding out her mom took all her savings which drove her to get dangerously drunk should have been a breaking point.

I'm just here for the Hyo-jun and Mirim scenes since their relationship is the most healthy so far and the least stressful. He actually cared that she was upset about her audition and offered to help her. I still think they should give up their dreams for the sake of all the actors, directors, and lawyers out there. I did find it hilarious that the scene Mirim's practicing involves a lawyer ex-bf.

Tae-ho annoys me on the romance department since he and Tae-min are both being suffocating, but TH is also the only one who tries to deprogram Hyo-shim from being her family's slave.

Will Phillip turn into Hyo-shim 2.0 for his family? I hope Rubi's boyfriend's mom throws water at her.

We are now at the exact midpoint of this show- with our two mothers still neck and neck in the worst possible mother race. Unit has noted Soo-kyung’s continuing manipulation of Tae-min but we should also note that her (actually desperate) offer to Hyo-shim is based upon the conviction that Hyo-shim is exactly the same kind of person as her history tells us that she herself has always been. Meanwhile Hyo-shim’s mom insists that Hyo-shim give up on dating until after Hyo-jun passes the Bar Exam- at which point Hyo-jun will set her up with another lawyer (which would be good for Hyo-jun’s legal career). Both of these awful moms literally want to prostitute Hyo-shim. But do give Tae-min’s mom credit for at least offering very generous terms.

Hyo-shim is not buying whatever either mom is pushing. Please note that neither our Anchor Lady nor Tae-min was consulted about the mistress idea: They would have been just as adamantly opposed as Hyo-shim is.

But we do have to thank Tae-min’s mom for giving us a real insight into Tae-mins character. Her conversation with Tae-min after Hyo-shim has stormed out told us a lot. His mom never allowed him to have fun, date, etc.- and thus have learned to read Hyo-shim. His overly romanticized notions are the product of both his ignorance and also his yearning for what he has not had in his life. He is as much a victim of the filial piety idea as Hyo-shim. But saying that does not mean that Tae-min is therefore right about all that he thinks he has missed. For instance, he may have wanted to be an artist but did that mean that he had enough talent to actually be a success as an artist? One of the most pernicious ideas of or times is that if one has a dream of doing something then, perforce, one automatically must be equipped with sufficient talent to achieve that goal. This irrational belief was thoroughly de-bunked in the excellent drama DO YOU LOVE BRAHMS, where Park Eun-bin’s character has a dream of being a professional violinist but in fact does not really have the talent for it. I suspect that the same is likely true of Tae-min. Fortunately, his uncle and almost certainly his grandfather recognized his true talents- which is why he finds himself doing what he is truly talented at. If Tae-min is not living his own life in his own eyes it seems to me that the sole reason may be that he was cursed with a bad dream.

One of the most positive things in these episodes was the emergence of Ms. Choi as a true 2FL for this show. When she storms into TS Fitness it was not because of something that Hyo-shim had done but rather a stupid stunt by one of her co-workers. Objectively she had every right to be furious and to take action. This was not some Chaebol Heiress tantrum- what had happened was truly damaging to her professionally. Which makes what happens next very revealing as to her actual feelings for Tae-min. Taemin asks her to drop the (perfectly legitimate) lawsuit but she exacts a price: Tae-min has to sit down with her for a truly serious conversation. That is how much she values and wants Tae-min. It also shows that she is indeed a quick thinker and Tae-min seriously needs to wake up from his dream of Hyo-shim to the far better reality of Ms. Choi. I have said this before but these two people really need to have a very long and in-depth conversation with each other.

We actually had a genuinely funny moment in Episode 24: Mi-rim returned from another audition- which turned out to be for an adult film- and failed that audition too. Here’s a thought: She helps Hyo-jun pass the Bar Exam and then sets up her own law office dealing with film and TV business- and brings on Hyo-jun to handle the contract side of things, where his natural perfectionism would actually pay off while she handled the intellectual property and litigation matters. They are still an important part of the production of shows and films- and make money by the barrel full. Every three of four years they could buy another building (unless they want a really big one- that would take longer). Just an idea for writer-nim.

Does it seem like Hyo-do’s attitudes and behavior are actually a reflection of what he saw his mom doing. But that does not excuse his “I love you” to Tae-hui.

Your plan for Hyo-jun and Mi-rim is better than what the writer has planned. The show has some good potential stories, it’s the writing that is dragging the show down. The poor writing and poor story telling skills (director) make the actors and fans suffer.

@oldawyer, as you know well, this drama is called "Live Your Own Life" and the premise is that when Hyo Shim finally declares independence, her family finally learns to life their own lives.

As you have noted previously, Hyo Jun does not want to be a lawyer - there is no scope for story-telling, especially as a desk job negotiating/writing contracts. Dotting i's and crossing t's??? Hyo jun would hate it.

Historically, the bar exam is in January - since the exam includes essay questions, pass/fail is not something that can be quickly determined. So, if i was writing this drama, Hyo Jun will spend the January/February episodes doing something other than sitting in the awful apartment - perhaps a directing gig, perhaps helping Mi-rim. it would be great if he directed her in some sort of short film. There must be some way for them to spend time together and have plenty of accidental romantic moments. That is, if i was writing this drama. 😉

I'm returning to this comment section because I read your 'What i'm Watching" post at some point yesterday but didn't have time to clarify nor did i want to bog down that comment section. And. . .the holiday weekend takes priority, of course.

Re: Im ju Eun and her appearance on LYOL. She was not at the Episode 1 (and 2??) script reading in May and her appearances in those two episodes were clearly nothing burgers - so that's why I don't think she was originally planned.

But at some point in the summer, when they were finalizing scripts, they decided to either create the role or enlarge it. She WAS at the first in-studio ceremony (a ceremony they hold when they begin rehearsal/filming in studio) on September 7th and she was a significant character in the all-character poster and her character bio has been on the KBS site from the beginning. So, I don't believe her role was enlarged simply due to the death of Noh young Gook.

Young Gook died on September 18th and at that point, they had completed filming 9 episodes. They re-shot specific scenes in 8 and 9 with the new actor. (I guess I spend too much time reading/bookmarking Naver articles, but the process of producing a kdrama sometimes fascinates me more than the drama itself.)

But after watching the last few episodes, I'm wondering if the writer knows what she wants to do with the character. She seems to be a plot device at this point rather than a true 2FL. Although she appeared in today's (12/24) episode, she didn't speak at all.

I look forward to reading your comments in a few days on the ep. 26/27 recap.

What fabulous detective work! I truly appreciate your efforts which have already been the basis for some of my thinking about the show. With this new information I may have to re-think a few things.

I am reminded of a great response once given by John Maynard Keynes when a fellow economist pointed out that he had changed his views on something: "When the data changes I change my opinion. What do you do sir?". In the same spirit of humility, I am fully prepared to alter my views on what is happening in this show (and in anything else).

May I congratulate you on a great and obviously engaging hobby. You have actually been very helpful in sharing these things with the rest of us.

I have now seen episode 26 and I am actually encouraged by it. But I will indeed wait until the we get a more appropriate place to comment and, of course we have yet to see the events of Episode 27.

So, I actually have considered these additional things that you have told us and am advancing this tentative hypothesis as to the progression of the development and expansion of Im Ju-eun’s character in this weekender:

Originally, she was a part of the show but simply as a broadcaster and a theoretical marriage partner for Tae-min. Her broadcasts were to fulfill a function similar to a Greek Chorus and the other function was simply more to underscore the idea that Tae-min should be considering marriage. Then the production team found out that Noh Young-gook was in fact seriously ill and that his role would need to be reduced because he had simply decided to soldier on rather than withdraw entirely. The need to expand the role of our Anchor Lady in order to provide a different way to get Tae-min off of Hyo-shim’s back began to be apparent at that point. We should not forget that although Hyo-shim may have liked and respected Tae-min as a person she has not once ever had any sort of romantic interest in him, not even one from selfish self-interest. So ‘getting Tae-min off her back’ is really the way that she would view the (hopefully successful) efforts of Ms. Choi. Far from being upset with our Anchor Lady she is more likely to send her a fruit basket as a thank you gift.

Then everything changed again when Noh In-gook actually died, and a replacement had to be found. Fortunately, the Director had someone he could tap quickly- an actor whose talents he respected who had appeared in KING OF TEARS, which he had directed. And the character of the chairman changed from a diminished role to what we have now: An alcoholic wreck who is burdened by what happened three years ago. This hypothesis (not asserted as fact but rather simply a possibility)) Explains both why we have seen two changes in the nature of the Chairman and also why the writer is still not entirely clear on what to do with the character of Ms. Choi. That said, the present set-up offers several real dramatic possibilities in the story of Tae-min and Ms. Choi and that may be part of the writer’s problem: Which route to choose?

I haven’t watched all of it but prolly won’t get to finishing it until later.
If this is the writer’s idea of romance, I am sorry for their partner. Either the HS/TH mess or the HS/TM mess or the Hyo Do/Tae Hui mess
I agree with @kdramatipsy. HS seems either slow or clueless and needs someone to open her head and put thoughts in there. If TH isn’t this aggressive, nothing will ever change. And while romance is whatever, she definitely needs a kick in her backside to get some power back in her home situation.
I just wish she does it on her own steam and isn’t handed everything on a platter. Empowerment.

This is an unpopular opinion, please don’t yell at me, but I feel so sorry for TM. Everyone else wants to run his life. The women in his life are horrors. His mother is…. Words escape me. And I really do not like Anchorwoman Choi anymore. Life with her will be tedious for poor TM. He really shouldn’t be blackmailed into marrying her.

If TH isn’t this aggressive, nothing will ever change.

I believe his aggressiveness is going to backfire - especially his cavalier attitude about her job at TS Fitness. He knows she is breaking the rules - but perhaps he believes his special VIP status will smooth the way? Really? Make a special case for HS that is forbidden for the other trainers?

However, unless the writer has changed her mind (from the earlier press releases), I think the personal empowerment is exactly where Hyo Shim is headed - becoming dependent on Tae ho is not the answer which is one reason that modeling contract is such a terrible idea.

As for TM, I feel sorry that he is so burdened - horrible mother, a father he loves and wants to protect, a mega-conglomerate (redundant, I know) that has been on shaky financial ground and finally having to give up his dream of a happy life with HS - but it gives us a chance to see that above all, he is a man of honor, compassion and justice (what his grandmother taught him iirc). Since most of the characters in this drama are pretty terrible - and the 2nd half will be their gradual transition to being better people - I would like to see Soo-kyung also granted the same privilege -with Tae Min.

What I would LOVE to see going forward is for HS to take on her family and distance herself from them ON HER OWN. TH needs to give her the space to establish her independence before getting into a relationship. Not sure that will happen though.

I don't see why the hate against TH. Men are meant to be hunters. He's just basically going after HS because he likes her. But his ways are a normal guys ways whereas TM isn't. TM thinks it's mutual and he thinks whatever he does it's acceptable. TH has never hurt HS. TM did multiple times knowing what his evil mother can do. HS and TH complement each other because both want just normal lives. TH can give HS the financial support and emotional support whereas HS can give TH the care and love he craves without a family. TH was angry and he just wanted an answer from HS. Do you still care for me? If you do come. If you don't I'm leaving. That to me is a very normal gesture for mam who has just been dumped in 24 hours after the relationship started.
