News bites: December 9, 2023

  • Park Eun-bin (Castaway Diva) may be putting on a doctor’s gown for her next project, facing off against Sol Kyung-gu (The Boys) in a new medical crime-thriller called Hyper Knife. Production is in the early stages with both actors currently in talks. Scripts are being penned by Kim Sun-hee (God’s Quiz 5). [News1]

  • Park Bo-young (Daily Dose of Sunshine) has been courted for the mystery-horror Lighting Store, potentially joining Joo Ji-hoon (Jirisan) and Seolhyun (Summer Strike). Adapted from a popular webtoon by Kangfull (Moving), actor Kim Hee-won (Behind Your Touch) is at the helm in his first drama as a director. [Osen]

  • The first poster has dropped for tvN’s Sejak, the Enchanted, giving us our first peek at Jo Jung-seok (Hospital Playlist 2) and Shin Se-kyung (Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun) swashed in wintry gray. Also starring Lee Shin-young (CEO-dol Mart) and Park Ye-young (Summer Strike), the sageuk romance will be premiering on January 21 in the weekend slot. [News1]
  • Also coming in the new year is JTBC’s Amazing Troubleshooter and helllooo Kang Ki-young (The Uncanny Counter 2: Counter Punch). The team only released two stills so far, but I’ll take what crumbs I can get. Together with Lee Jia (Pandora: Beneath the Paradise), the pair will be coming to our screens on January 31, setting up office as the nation’s best divorce resolution business. [News1]

  • JTBC is also working on a new Joseon-era sageuk called The Life of Lady Ok (roughly translated), lining up Im Ji-yeon (The Killing Vote) and Choo Young-woo (Oasis) to headline the series. Expected to air in 2024, production is being led by PD Jin Hyuk (Sisyphus: The Myth, The Legend of the Blue Sea) with scripts by Park Ji-sook (Uncle). [News1]
  • Over on LG’s U+ Mobile TV, the first script reading stills have been released for the office romance Branding in Sungsoo-dong, showcasing the main cast led by Kim Ji-eun (Longing for You) and Park Solomon (a.k.a. Lomon) (Revenge of Others). The body-swap will be launching in February 2024, with PD Jung Heon-soo (Twelve Nights) directing and writing by Choi Sun-mi and Jeon Sun-young. [News1]

I only know Kim Hee Won as an actor. So it would be interesting to watch his work as a director on a drama starring actors that I like, PBY and JJH.

1. Another film vet making his drama debut?
A casting alongside Park Kyung-gu...wow! Facing off against him...double wow!!

2. Greater heights for Kim Hee-won.

3. Dramagods. Be good to one of my Saguek queen Shin Se-kyung. I'm looking forward to Jo Jung-seok too.

4. When I saw the poster, I was asking myself : Kang Ki-young? Yeah! Kang Ki-young!!!
I hope this is whatever far from whatever Pandora and Uncanny Counter 2 was for them both.
P.S. I like the calm atmosphere of the pictures. Lee Jiah is relaxed in comfy cloths. And Kang Ki-young is dashing in his attire and styling.

One one hand seeing our favorite actors/actresses and writers/PDs sign up for new projects is pretty awesome (more Kangfull 👏🏻, Lee Ji-A’s ageless beauty 👏🏻, another Park Eun Bin 🥳)

On the other hand it kinda feels like musical chairs. We’re seeing the same people over and over again and sometimes it’s refreshing to see a new face.

I hope Park Eun-bin will accept this. When someone like Sol Kyung-gu is your potential co-star, say yes. Add Song Kang-ho and Byun Yo-han to 2024's lineup, and the excitement level increases.

Yes, Sol Kyung-gu is the reason to accept. He can morph and disappear into any character. And he rarely does drama - wait, is this a movie or drama?

2. Does Kang Full has time to pen the script or at least have the final say. If yes then "bring it on!" If not then - eyeying it warily.

3. Sageuk romance is my new favorite genre. Will it be as beautiful as The Matchmakers.

4. Bangawoyo, so glad to finally meet you as a ML uri KKY!! Come soon. We are waiting for you.

6. Lomon yes!! Wary about body swap in office romance though.

On Kangfull, I am under the impression that he has quite an extended portfolio since debut as a webtoonist in late 1990s. Say, Moving could easily build out into several seasons based on the characters he has created over the years.

Seeing drama adaptations of very successful webtoons crash and burn had made me wary. I feel the success of Moving was because Kang Full wrote the script himself. If he is not directly involved in this then it may be iffy.

Sir, another Joseon romance/revenge drama has hit kdramaland...

Thank the drama gods, Kim Ji-eun and Lomon in a romcom. I love both of them and I hope it's good enough to make up for whatever Longing for You was trying to do.

Excited to see Park Eun Bin in something sharp and dark, I hope the writing is good. I've only seen her in (relatively) lighter roles so far, even though they were all different and interesting, but intrigued by this one, hope she takes it.

Amazing Troubleshooter with Kang Ki Young - how in the world did this escape my radar - especially since it is a legal (not horror, not sageuk, not thriller, not fantasy) drama. It is now on my watchlist.

According to MDL, this will be on Netflix. 😊
