Park Min-young reclaims her life in Please Marry My Husband

The promos have been ramping up for tvN’s upcoming Please Marry My Husband and the latest teaser has our love square dressed to the nines, celebrating with Park Min-young (Love in Contract) as she gives away her no-longer-husband.

Opening on our heroine as the ceremony begins, we’re led to believe that this is or was Kang Ji-won (Park Min-young) in her wedding dress, while a smiling Lee Yi-kyung (Critical X) waits by the altar. The camera soon reveals, though, that Ji-won is the escort and the real bride clad in white is her no-longer-friend Song Ha-yoon (Oh! Young-shim).

In the appearing captions, Park Min-hwan (Lee Yi-kyung) is introduced as “the non-recyclable trash husband” and his new bride Jung Soo-min (Song Ha-yoon) is described as “wanting to take everything her best friend had.” Giving the cheating pair her wholehearted blessing, Ji-won sneers, “Congratulations for marrying the trash that I threw out.”

With the world now her oyster, a confident Ji-won walks back up the aisle and her tagaline tell us that she’s “standing up to fight against her sewer-like fate.” She then takes the hand of Na In-woo (Longing for You) playing Yoo Ji-hyuk, the man who is posed “to help Ji-won reach her full potential.” The teaser then comes to a close as our two couples face off.

Production for the revenge rom-com has PD Park Won-gook (Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist, Special Labor Inspector Jo) at the helm, with writing by Shin Yoo-dam (Awaken). tvN’s Please Marry My Husband is slated to premiere on January 1, broadcasting in the Monday-Tuesday slot.

Geez, I just get less interested in this the more I see of it. On a superficial level, I don't like how Park Min Young looks and I just keep getting distracted by that.
I'm kinda missing the reddish brown hair of the jerk husband (in the webtoon) haha. When I read the webtoon, there was an actor I thought could play that part but I don't remember who it was! Ahh, so frustrating haha

I'm kinda curious about this guy as an actor since I've only seen him on variety appearances. I know he had a role in descendants of the sun but even in that, he seemed like a petulant brat (I mean, it's probably understandable and maybe even realistic given the circumstances but still, it didn't make me think "I need to see more of that guy")

I am so curious if the comeuppence will be the same as the webtoon. Personally, I liked how the mistreated wife kept winning over the jerk husband & evil friend. It was funny to me. It's like when you *know* people are lying and they put their own chest into it while you're just like "uh huh, sure" (🚨Spoiler🚨: there was a moment like that in the webtoon)
It almost takes away some of the maliciousness because they are just clowns at that point.

On a superficial level, I completely agree with you. Now if anyone doesn’t like me criticizing the actors’ or actresses’ physique, please do skip this comment. (I’m tired of being told why are you criticizing their appearance? Well, it distracts me that’s why.) I am very distracted by her perhaps new nose. I think she looked best when she was doing When the Weather is Fine, and I regret not seeing that version of her much anymore. And she looks too thin. I want her to look more healthy and happy (yes, even in a revenge drama).

To me PMY was probably the most beautiful k actresses in recent times and I too couldn’t focus on her changing appearance in her last drama! Too thin. Too sickly looking. I hope she is okay.

I hope she isn’t too stressed about the controversies surrounding her and her boyfriend (not sure they still are), but to me she looks more fragile now than ever. I, too, hope she is doing all right.

Don't know about before, but I heard she lost weight for this role in particular. I do like her short haircut here.

For me, I was most aghast at Lee Yi Kyung's styling. The shiny lips and pale, airbrushed makeup.... He looks really fake.

If this is the case, it's much easier to comment. I hope she doesn't lose this much weight in her next projects.

I’ve always been a PMY fan, I consider her as one of the more charming actresses out there. But the last few years (indeed after When the weather…) she’s gotten too thin and frankly looks unhealthy. Pressure from the industry ?

I don't mean to be patronizing to my fellow Beanies, but something makes me want to defend PMY. Yes I may be partial to her, but apart from that my empathy also comes from the fact that I HAVE ACTUALLY struggled with weight issues. So I know what a headache it is to manage other people's comments on top your fragile self-image. I also know that a comment like "oh, you're so skinny" hurts as much as "oh, you're so fat", and so does having people (close friends, of all people!) monitor your appearance constantly.

For a celebrity like PMY, WE DON'T KNOW for sure WHAT exactly she's going through, or IF she's even going through ANYTHING at all and it's not just a buzz ignited by one person's or our collective imagination. So, in so worrying about the health of an actress based just on her APPEARANCE, who otherwise seems perfectly fine and professional to me, we are adding to her issues (her ex boyfriend or whatever) not doing her a favor!

Why do we forget that she is a professional actor for god's sake! Aren't they supposed to gain and lose weight according to a character's requirement? What's so new about it? I don't see why it should be correlated to her personal life! To me it seems a decision she made solely to play a terminally ill character, which absolutely makes sense! It makes sense to look a little "sickly" when you are playing a sick character, doesn't it?

PS: Forgive me for being a little passionate, but these words come from the heart of someone who KNOWS what eating disorders are in the deepest sense! And I ALSO happened to know and worked with some professional actors (stage actors who did bit-parts on screen), who believe it or not, will do ANYTHING just for one role because when acting is your only source of livelihood, you have to! And I am not gonna judge them for it!

I'm partial to her as well. It wasn't enough to keep me watching the Forecasting Whatever drama, but I thoroughly enjoyed Love in Contract. And, of course, Healer, WWWSK and Private Lives are all some of the most re-watchable dramas that I maintain in my watchlist.

The revenge aspect of this drama is not very appealing, but I'll give it a try.

Thanks for your perspective. I understand what you mean. I think I got a similar comment earlier (hence, the part of my comment on skip-reading this if..).

Just my question, is it better if I ignore how I think of the physique of an actor or actress and just don't express any feeling about wanting her to be healthier at all, or should I just ignore their projects altogether without saying a word? I alone won't matter much in viewership anyway. I can't lie it's distracting sometimes (well, I'm a human), but would you rather have me (let's say me alone) expressing my concerns (in a polite way) or just ignore her projects altogether without voicing anything? If the answer is number 2, then it's good to know now. I'm not particular to PMY, but I liked her a lot in Weather. A curious mind just wants to know.

I don't have problems with both, apparently. I can do what you think it's good for the actress. I don't think I gain anything here.

And please don't take this as an insult or an inconsiderate question/comment. I also struggle with certain things myself. But as she is an actress, meaning she uses her visuals and her acting talents, I don't suppose comments like mine are very out-of-line?

Hey @mmmmm , you totally heve the right to do either! My comment is not directed towards you, your opinion or anyone's opinion in particular! I never meant to heat things up here. It is just coming from inside, and from feelings which I cannot particularly term as linking for the actress, or hatred for someone's opinion here (forgive me if I sounded like that). It is just that I don't see the logic in connecting a professional choice to the personal issues of the actor. I DID NOT say all what I said in response to your comment or anyone's comment here, nor am I insinuating that YOU don't have her best interst in your mind. I am responding to the buzz I have been hearing and hearing for such a long time, that I myself am sick now. I chose to respond just because of having know things about eating disorders, and having seen people who take such decisions in their professional acting career everyday, what she did didn't seem as abnormal or concerning to me as a lot of people. And I may have (wrongly) mixed my personal feelings with my opinion. Forgive me if my opinion seemed to be questioning yours in a derogatory way. To demean you and others was not my intention. You HAVE the right to comment as well as me!

Thanks for the clarification! And please, again, don't think I personally attacked your comment or anything. Tbh, I have never had such experiences, but I think I can imagine how difficult it might be for people who have it. Comments on the internet can be demeaning, I feel you for that. And you have the right to vent. :) I never thought we were on bad terms here, and I appreciate your comments. But really, some comments came from a good place, I believe mine is among those. So please don't take it too your heart. PMY is loved by many (well, perhaps not me in particular because I love Kim Seon-ho 🤣), so some are just concerned I'd presume.

5

@mmmmm Oh why you can have an unnie (or a unnie 🤔, or whatever 😆) as well as an oppa!

Thank you for not having any bad feelings! I like you and your oppa (in a platonic way) 😊

2

Well, thanks! I like you and erm.. perhaps your unnie, too. For the latter, perhaps a little bit. 😅😂

Personally, I think if it is in a forum where the actor/actress you're commenting highly likely seeing (for example like their personal social media page, or like Pann forum) I would suggest to refrain commenting, ignore your concern, and just don't watch the drama. Since we never know celebrities' struggle, if they are dealing with weight issues or mental health issues in the first place. If it is in a forum where the actor/actress will not see, like this one, I feel like you can express your opinion and concerns freely!

I agree with everything you've said, but I also want to point out that some of us are reacting not to the pictures (or not only to the pictures) but to the press release that talked about PMY getting down to a dangerously low weight as a kind of "method acting." That's deeply concerning and reminds us (or me, at least) how much this industry prizes a certain, often unhealthy physique, which then threatens the health and well-being of both those who work in the industry and those who consume its products.

Before the weight loss was revealed, I assumed they would just use makeup, clothes, staging, and lighting to make her look sickly.

Which now makes me wonder, are cancer plots not typically shown in kdramas? If they are, do people tend physically change for the role?

1

@Britney: I remember Ahn Eunjin’s character having advanced cancer of some sort in the “One and only”. I don’t remember that she looked emaciated. I could be wrong though.

5

Oh, absolutely. Many cultures support and develop deeply imbedded weight stigmas that can victimize a range of people, but especially those who are in the public realm. I squirm when I see anyone comment on an actor or actress' body and draw conclusions about their health based on how they view that body, but at the same time, there is a place for genuine concern, caring, and commiseration here :)

5

The webtoon community is also complaining about the actor playing Mr. Yu being too skinny, which I find hilarious because of course he isn't a match, the body type of Mr. Yu in the comic is NOT realistic.

Haha, to be fair he isn't who I would have pictured as Mr. Yu.

I've been thinking lately about how so many Korean manhwa have the "dorito man" body type for the male lead, whereas dramas always have the more skinny, ripped body type for the male lead--personally, I prefer the latter, myself. It's such a discrepancy! Although I should be happy that Kdramas don't make actors get all bulked up to match some drawing like American movies do (coughMarvelcough).

I think people have unrealistic expectation because some folks do look like webtoons haha
Example: Cha Eun Woo
And the second male lead in True Beauty. I don't know his name but it was CRAZY to me that both him & Eun Woo looked like webtoon characters.

You have hit the nail on the head. The lighting is really weird. If it is an intentional choice for the teaser for heightened impact it is fine. But if the whole drama is like that 🤦‍♀️ it would be just too distracting.

I don't know what to expect with this show.

There is nothing new in the black versus white theme.
At least it will be aired during the week as the competition on the weekend is fierce.

For such a popular webtoon the teaser does seem little tame and the monochrome look with that lighting is not doing anyone any favors as everyone is looking so washed out.

So who puts an evening gown to a marriage event? It's a weird choice.

The trailer makes this drama look like it's been created by AI or deepfakes. I don't know if that is the tone it wants to set, but it is off putting to me. (I couldn't watch Yumi's cells after awhile because the white makeup or filter on Yumi's face was so distracting that it was hard to watch even if the story was okay.) Maybe this artificial look will work in a story about time travel, but the trailer is not so promising.

Na Inwoo is only 8 years younger than her, but it would be nice to see Minyoung in a drama with someone her age again. I guess I just want more actors in their late 30s and 40s doing these types of dramas. They seem to have all disappeared.

I don't think real life age matters much as long as they believably portray their characters age.

And even if they don't necessarily look the characters' age, I guess it depends on the actors being able to portray the vibe and traits of the character in a believable way.

Eimen, sis! I absolutely hate when industry think that when women hit 40, they are not fit to play the romantic leads and relegated to playing evil MIL's. Come on, there are plenty of women in 40,50,60,70,80,90's who watch this show and who want to see, you know, the same-aged faces, in their romantic leads. (Fun statistical fact, 40% of people over 50, have active sex lives, which probably is underestimate because no one focuses on that age group.) I cannot imagine the pressure of women to look younger and, in fact, if one goes down the YouTube rabbit hole and watches enough of Lori Hill videos, it's clear there's no woman in entertainment industry who did not go under the knife. I'd like to ask the entertainment industry to have more representation in the romantic leads' faces and physical appearance, but alas, it's like screaming into the void. And so we are left with Song Kang playing mischievous sexy Devil who actually comes across a petulant teenager on a screen...Sigh.
