[Cast Away] Erotic fanfic writer vs. mystery novel author

Don’t you just hate it when you’re short a few million dollars to produce a drama with your dream team of actors, writers, and directors? *pouts* Well, we found a way to scratch that itch!

Introducing the new Dramabeans community series Cast Away — where Beanies can advocate for their chosen actors and creatives in imaginary roles.

How it works: Each week, we’ll share a hypothetical K-drama plot with you. In the comments, discuss who you think is the perfect cast to play the roles in this imaginary show.

You can also go wild and introduce more characters, rename the show, pick your favorite director, etc. Who knows? Maybe our collective wishing will manifest fantasy casting into reality.

This week’s K-drama plot: cat and mouse between erotica writer and mystery novel author

An anonymous fanfic writer becomes internet-famous for writing erotica based on popular mystery novels, much to the ire of the original authors. One author in particular is hell-bent on exposing the fanfic writer for “sullying his deftly crafted masterpiece of suspense and hard logic” with her lewd scenarios. Unbeknownst to him, the fanfic writer is his strait-laced editor whom he’s been crushing on for years. What will happen when they discover each other’s secrets?

Who are your candidates for the conservative editor who’s secretly the queen of scandalous stories? Who should play the novel author who declares war on impractically sexy spy suits? He should be good at throwing tantrums, especially when he reads the fanfics pairing up his novel’s heroine with a hot villain.

And wouldn’t it be fun to see the fanfic versus novel scenarios play out? Toss in some ideas for those as well with your dream cameos to act out both versions of the story. As always, feel free to swap the roles as you wish.

Feel free to request a plot line for future Cast Away posts. We’ll do our best (beep-boop!) to serve a fun twist on it.

I don’t care about the male lead but someone give Kim Seul-gi a lead role. This role is perfect for her!

Yes!! She can bring her FBNDoor character back to life in this one.

She really deserves it! I was thinking of her when I wrote the prompt.

Now I need this drama with Kim Seul-gi and Lee Ji-hoon (as @attiton suggested).

And funny cameos for the fictional characters in the mystery novels (and the same ones for the imaginary fanfics, of course).

Who are your candidates for the conservative editor who’s secretly the queen of scandalous stories? Han Hye-jin, because the way she played her "disgraced" character in Divorce Att'y Shin had ALL my attention. She, well, um...let's have her eventually own the escandalo.

Who should play the novel author who declares war on impractically sexy spy suits? Lee Ji-hoon, as we've been talking about Rookie Historian recently and he, well...let's just say, well, um, he'd be good at this.

Thanks, @mary, for making this happen! AI this up or something 😉

Aww, I have a soft spot for Rookie Historian. Lee Ji-hoon would make a great goody two shoes with a secret crush.

I just imagined the heart attack my bestie - who IS a racy fanfic writer despite having super serious daily job - would've had if bro-in-law Lee Soohyuk got such role... OK, since I'm an evil creature, I want it to happen, pretty please, dramagods!))) FL doesn't matter, she's gonna be ignored at best (let's not talk about worst option - trust me, you don't wanna know lmao).

Ohhhh, I really want to watch this drama!🍿

I will vote for a reunion (of the movie Dream) with IU as the editor and Park Seo Joon as the fit-throwing mystery writer. Taec should be the main villain. Or, Rowoon as the fit-thrower and PSJ as the sexy villain.
Yeah, I’d be happy with any of that 👍🏼
One of the erotic stories must feature Matchmaker’s SamSoonGu Couple 🥰

I love the idea of fanfic nested inside of another fictional story!!! So meta.

Park Seo Jun would be another good fit for the writer.

I'm trying to figure out if this idea would be better with actors/actresses I know will work (Nana, Lee Se Young, Choi Woo Sik, Hyeri, Ryu Hye Young, Kim Seul Gi, etc) or actors that I wouldn't really imagine in these roles (Won Jin Ah, Kim Bum).

I have no idea why but I'm already obsessed about a role reversal with Kim Seon Ho (editor, erotica fanfiction writer) and Jung Eun Ji (mystery novel writer).
But at the same time, I feel like Nana or Hyeri should be the fanfic writers. 😅

...I just love the plot, I need this romcom. 😂

I've been racking my head searching for an actor who fits and mirrors this description and the lot fell on Taecyeon.

Conservative editor...the list is endless but I'm going for Seol In-ah.

Okay, first off, I absolutely love this prompt and need it to be an actual drama ASAP!

As for the castings, I nominate Taecyeon as the fit throwing, totally self obsessed and pretentious author. I know in my heart that Nana would be the absolute perfect straight-laced, no nonsense editor by day, and the squealing and kicking her feet fanfic writer by night.
And if you were to do a gender swap and make the author a female and the editor male the, Kim Soohyun and Park Eunbin

As for the actors who should act out the fanfic scenarios for our viewing pleasure... I think we should get a new pair for every different scenario hehe. Cameos galore.

At the very least, there needs to be snippets of the FL's erotic mystery fanfiction.

As the security guards inched closer to their hiding spot, Detective Park pressed himself against her, trying to hide his large frame -- and her -- behind the supply cabinet. Flashlights probed the dark labortory, and she could feel her heart race faster. But was it from adrenaline or from desire? In this position, she could feel every inch of Detective Park's chisled, chocolate abs, and his breath tickled her earlobe as he whispered, "Don't move." This was niether the time nor the place for such thoughts, but even as he commanded her to remain still, her hands itched to explore his body. She imagined running her palms up his chest, slding them along his neck, and then cupping his face. She'd bring it towards her, and then...

LEE SEO-JIN is a famous mystery writer. He puts so much effort into his works that he has no social life. He lives alone in a dusty bachelor apartment. No one dares to visit. When his publisher is seeing declining sales, it wants to get new novels published faster and racier to sell to Netflix for large licensing fees. LEE does not want to sully his masterpieces so he takes it our on the staff, including his editor JO CHO YEONG (who has played both roles in her career). JO to keep her job has to put up with his rants, raves and crude remarks.

JO takes the publisher's demands to heart and starts to "re-work" mystery novels into racy action thrillers to "prove" to her writers like LEE that it can be done . . . tastefully? To test her theory, she posts them on-line to great fanfare and extreme anger by the publisher (this is copyright infringement!) and LEE (this is trashing my work!). the publisher and LEE make it clear they will track down the net-writer and sue her for damages.

JO cannot confess to her experiment to the publisher or LEE for fear of getting fired and sued. She also likes the extra money coming in from the fan-fic site. But the more she writes about erotic themes, the more she become addicted to it. Then she starts having strange dreams about her and her nemesis, LEE, which leaves her nervous, disgusted and sleep deprived.

LEE hires a private investigator KIM NAM-GIL, to trace the fan-fic writer so he can get justice. As KIM hangs out at the office, he begins to flirt with JO which upsets LEE who tries to clip the flirtations by screaming "I am not paying you to date but find that criminal!" But since JO reacts positively by the attention, LEE becomes bi-polar in his actions with JO to start a mysterious love triangle between them (which in the end is the basis for JO's successful first novel, "My Lovers Gave Me Writer's Cramps."

Oooh hahaha this sounds like a fantastic and hilarious drama. There are like major parts of me that hope Kdrama writers just lurk here on DB, except that I'd want for mary to get credit for the original idea ahaha

My Cast:

Male Lead: either Choi Jin Hyuk or Jung Kyung Ho. I think both play serious one moment and throwing a tantrum the next very well.

Female Lead: Jang Na Ra for a bit of a noona-romance vibe as well (which I think would be hilarious given that she's writing erotic fan fiction)

I'd want Park Seo Jun and IU for a cameo at least ahahaha

and I'm open to other suggestions for the Male Lead.. I don't know if my current picks would fit the vibe for a noona romance at the same time

This is ingenious, @mary. I know I want the girl to be a mousy, timid creature that is not overtly attractive. But also not super young. Thinking of my character actors that need top billing, Park Jin Joo would be the first. And the author needs to be established, and I can’t think of anyone else that this could be except maybe Lee Dong Wook or Gong Yoo. Put her in a Pixie cut and I can totally seen Gong Yoo’s character crushing on his editor. Like how she looks here: https://pin.it/4S0Zt5B

And she sings! And both Gong Yoo and LDW sing and there NEEDS to be a drunken after work norabang scene with them singing and he’s lamenting the fact some no-faced hussy is ruining his carefully researched novels. And he says to her, “You would never betray me in that way, would you!” And she sings Baby Vox’s “Betrayal.” She sings the part that says, ”Don’t look at me sadly, All I can give you is pain,” because she has betrayed him and and he joins in the bridge, “I’m so sorry, girl, I need you, girl, Don’t you know that I care!” because he has a bleeding heart of her! Dang, I need this drama STAT!

I missed that! A quick Google search says they were on site in November. Maybe it will see the light of day this year.

I would watch the heck out of this drama. Not only for the premise, but also because I adore Park Jin-joo and need to see her in a lead role like yesterday.

Okay, so I saw the title and thought "I want a crossover universe has Cha Joo Ik from Doom At Your Service as the publisher of the fanfic and Kang Dan Yi from Romance is a Bonus Book as Team Lead from the editing department of the mystery writers publication company.

Then I read the premise....

Ahhhh! I have so many thoughts.

First of all, I want Lee Elijah as the editor (her role in Ms. Hammurabi lives rent free in my head). She's fancy, competent and level-headed by day and full of tropic fanficking fun by night! Yes!!!

Then I want Ji Chang Wook as the mystery writer (his pouty, petty self from Suspicious Partner 😆).

Guys, I hacked this. They will investigate the company hosting the fanfic and find out it's Cha Joo Ik's company.... And he is Cha Eun Ho's (Kang Dan Yi/Cha Eun Ho) cousin once removed. Plenty of hijinks to explore.

I want, I want, I want ah!!!!

She's been his editor for many years so he's had time to fall in love before he even realizes that someone has been writing erotic fanfic based on his novels. So by the time we are dropped into the story he's already in love with her but doesn't know that she moonlights as a fanfic author. XD
