[Cast Away] A ragtag book club tracks down a secret admirer

Don’t you just hate it when you’re short a few million dollars to produce a drama with your dream team of actors, writers, and directors? *pouts* Well, we found a way to scratch that itch!

Introducing the new Dramabeans community series Cast Away — where Beanies can advocate for their chosen actors and creatives in imaginary roles.

How it works: Each week, we’ll share a hypothetical K-drama plot with you. In the comments, discuss who you think is the perfect cast to play the roles in this imaginary show.

You can also go wild and introduce more characters, rename the show, pick your favorite director, etc. Who knows? Maybe our collective wishing will manifest fantasy casting into reality.

This week’s K-drama plot: bookworms-turned-love-sleuths

A woman who owns a cozy bookstore begins receiving anonymous love letters. She enlists the help of her book club to uncover the identity of her secret admirer and in the process, she finds love where she least expects it. (Of course!)

Who hasn’t had a crush on a bookish person at least once in their lives? Let’s take some inspiration from that for our casting ideas. Will your bookstore heroine be a cool genius? Or is she reserved à la Seo Kang-joon in I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day? Who are the members of the book club and would you like them to be competent sleuths or misguided hindrances to the lovebirds? Throw in casting ideas for your hiding hero too. What’s his background and why does it take eight episodes for the book club to suss him out?

Feel free to request a plot line for future Cast Away posts. We’ll do our best (beep-boop!) to serve a fun twist on it.

I feel like this set up would be fun to do both either a best friends to lovers OR an "enemies" (non malicious friendly but they won't admit it rivals) to lovers.

It was adapted/modified very well (at least imho) for You’ve Got Mail!
Korea, you can do this!

7

@bbstl is it weird I haven't actually seen You've Got Mail... 🤣🤣

3

@sicarius oh, Sic! It’s by Nora Ephron whom I adore. The music is great, has so many funny side characters and is a fun memory of how e-mail started out long ago. I think it was a very loving re-imagining of Shop Around the Corner 🥰

5

@bbstl Oh, I KNOW it, I just haven't SEEN it lmfaooo
I mean, Jimmy Stewart>>>>> Tom Hanks, you know...

5

@bbstl When I read the prompt I thought of it as a combo of You’ve got mail and I will come to you when the weather is fine but didn’t realise there was a coincidental connection with The shop around the corner! What are the chances of that?!

3

@reply1988 @bbstl You've Got Mail, In The Good Old Summertime, and The Shop Around the Corner are all adaptations of a Hungarian play called Parfumerie. There's a delightful stage musical adaptation of the play called She Loves Me, too

8

@vienibenmio that’s news to me. Who knew that it was such a popular piece of work to have so many adaptations. Thanks for sharing.

3

@vienibenmio thanks! I had no idea, which makes it all the more clear that kdrama needs its own adaptation, too!

4

Kang Ki Young can do it!

How has KDrama not done this already? 🤷‍♀️

I love the sound of this and looking forward to seeing what the imaginative beanies come up with. I am picturing a rom com set in a country location like Once upon a small town and the mix of book club attendees being representative of the locals at different life stages like the market stall holders in Our Blues. No ideas on the actors though.

I have read the first sentence (A woman who owns a cozy bookstore) and then I have stopped reading to think only of her, without knowing anything more.
And I have imagined Park Bo-young.

She will find love (slow-burn) in one of the last members of the club, Kim Seon-oh, a shy man she has just met. I have not decided if he wrote the love letters or not... 🤔

Thanks for tagging, Cera! TBH, BB can play every character (I.e., ML, FL, SML, SFL) and I’ll still be watching regardless of how little confusing the show might become. M’s love transcends boundaries.

And gender norms ... 🤣 🤣 🤣

3

@mmmmm I love that the way to magically conjure you anywhere on DB is to say your BB's name. Your spirited "claim staking" love is both admirable and inspirational. I wish I could "love" Yoon Shi-yoon so spiritedly. Even though he is firmly and immutably the crowned King in my little list, way way above any other, I do admit to my gaze being drawn here and there by becoming Oppas urging me to "look" at them with admiration. 🤷‍♀️ I do have eyes you know.
But rest assured @IsaGC and I happily and wholeheartedly support your declaimed love for your BB and wish you a long and happy life together.

2

@mmmmm and I are two faithful beanies who only love one man :D

She only loves BB and I only love Shi Yoon.

3

@seeker Kamsahamida. *bow together with BB*

@isagc Umm.. *plays innocent* yes, BB comes first. I admit that I only sometimes were drawn to other bois like Kim Yong-dae, Ahn Hyo-seop, and Dylan Wang, but time has proven it again and again that my heart belongs to BB.

So in a way, I think you're right??? RIGHT???

3

@mmmmm

I'm definitely right. As @seeker said, we have eyes 😅😉
But the heart belongs to only one, for several reasons.

JUNG YU MI!!! She owns a small bookstore/cafe in a small seaside village. She's sweet, a little reserved, but beloved by the whole town of 50 people. Her customers are mostly vacationers looking for a quick breather away from the city.

GONG YU - ML who keeps coming back to the small town after his fist visit when he got fired from his job as a top civil engineer. He befriended the ajusshi next door, and fell for our FL when she asked for their help upon losing electricity one stormy night (this is why the FL did not see the ML. I mean, if she did, she's probably fall instantly too. Lol)

YOON KYUNG HO - ajusshi/owner of the shop next door

Book Club Members:
Chae Jong Hyeop - has a noona crush on the FL, that's why he joined the book club. Son of the town's baker who supplies pastries and bread to the bookshop cafe.
Jo Bok Rae - famous mystery novel writer who chose to stay in town for its quiet charm
Park So Yi - daughter of the writer and dreams of becoming an actress
So Jin - sassy seafood restaurant owner, FL's bestie
Seo Yi Sook - town's richest woman/ landlady, warm and loving business and life mentor to the group
Ahn Dong Gu - police academy student who's back in his hometown while taking a break from school

Cameo by CHOI WOO SHIK as an amateur surfer who visits town from time to time and is like a little brother to our FL. Turns out, he's the ML's younger cousin.

No need to rewatch (even if it's great)... you know the magic drama trick called "flashbacks". ^^
There are enough to follow easely, as well as explanations, because W writer was quite stingy about that.
There is a page explaining how work the format (about voice-overs, and many other stuff), but I think it's possible to catch intuitively without reading it.

FL - Either Park Bo-Young will suit the role of the bookstore owner to a T - bright and peppy and always ready with the perfect book recommendation for every patron. She's got the Girl-Next-Door look and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see a female bookstore owner like her in real life.

ML - Nam Joo-Hyuk. He could be the younger man who is a total sweetheart of a bookworm. He is a socially awkward editor at a small publishing company and so very good with his (written) words. He is always at her bookstore picking out something to read even though his TBR pile at home is threatening to fall over and crush him to death LOL!

The Book Club Ladies:
- Kim Mi-Kyung as the Big Sister of the group.
- Shin Min-Ah as the Man-eater of the group
- Kim Se-Jeong who is the starry-eyed Romantic of the group
- Seol In-Ah who is the Love Cynic of the group
- Park Eun-Bin as a young Catholic nun who secretly sneaks out of the convent to attend book group every week because she can give up everything in service of God... except romance novels.

The book club meets to read ROMANCE and they take turns reading bedroom scenes out loud every week without earshot of ML and other bookstore patrons who pretend they aren't interested in "stupid romance books" but are listening intently (judging by their red faces while browsing other books.

Been buried under work but I'm back and here's the plot (sort of):

ML (Nam Joo-Hyuk) is an editor at a publishing company where he edits Horror novels. One day, the publisher (Han Ji-Min) that Horror is not where the money is at now - Romance is. So to save the company that is teetering on bankruptcy, the publisher declares that they will pivot to publishing some Romance books.

And ML is appointed Head Romance Editor despite being a socially awkward dude who is clueless about women because Horror sells the fewest copies while everyone else's division is breaking even.

ML panics because he has no experience at all with Romance either in books or real life (his few attempts at securing a girlfriend had crashed and burned spectacularly in the past despite actually being a sweet and kind dude). So his trusty personal assistant (Park Bo-Gum) - who is a total ladies man - suggests that they go do some research. In fact, he's heard of this cozy little book store tucked away in the outskirts of Seoul where a very unique Romance book club meets every Saturday and reputedly brings in the crowds.

So the two of them make their way to FL (Park Bo-Young)'s book store on the next available Saturday and discover exactly WHY the book club pulls in the crowds - the "bedroom scene" read-aloud segment. Not that anyone admits to listening in - they just loiter around the shop making their selections while reading... and FL does a roaring business with that.

ML and his PA have a heated loud whisper argument because ML is horrified that he'd be expected to edit books with bedroom scenes in them and his PA is telling him he needs to suck it up or it's curtains for both their jobs.

FL overhears them while shelving some books in the next aisle and marches over to tell them both to pipe down because they were interrupting the read-aloud segment (even if people can't exactly hear what they are saying).

ML, in the heat of the loud-whisper argument - during which he uses his hands to get his point across - sends our petite FL flying when he accidentally smacks her in the chest. That causes an uproar with the Book Club ladies and customers coming to FL's rescue and FL dusting herself off and giving ML a piece of her mind. To appease her, he buys a huge stack of books - everything she recommends (and she gleefully recommends about 30 books, All hardcovers).

As ML and his PA head back home with their car stacked with books, ML can't stop thinking about the cozy little bookshop and decides that he will continue to conduct his "research" there to save his and his PA's job even if it means he'll have a red face every Saturday and have to deal with FL and her Book Club ladies.

And so it begins - he gradually falls in love with her and since she seems perpetually irritated by him and he's hopeless at approaching women, he decides to write her a letter every week.

And no - no serial killer in sight.

Lee Seol (Yoon Eun Hye), runs a cozy bookstore. A few weeks ago, a new tea house opened in the neighborhood. The tea house owner's (Yoon Se Ah) dongsaeng (Lee Soo Hyuk) is a poet.

One day the owner gets sick and she asks her dongsaeng, Na Mu, to take care of the store for her. That day, Lee Seol goes to the establishment and spends a few hours there, just drinking tea and looking at the sky. Then she writes something in a note, sticks it under the table, and leaves the place.

Na Mu saw her in action. After she leaves, he goes to the table and reads the note.

He asks to the staff if anyone knows her, and the tea barista (Han Ye Ri) reveals her identity (HYR's part of the book club).

One day, Seol sees a weird letter in her mail. A poem from an anonymous writer.
She thinks it's from one of her friends, so she talks about it with her bookclub members, buy they know nothing.
She ignores it.

The next week week she gets another letter. This time it's only one sentence "I hope words can give you comfort again".

At that moment, she remembered what she wrote two weeks ago in the tea house and smiled.

She came back to the tea house and left another note.
She kept getting letters and Na Mu kept getting sticky notes under the table.

When the letters where poems she would share them with her mates.

A few weeks later, a new member enters the club (Esom). After reading the poems she finds them familiar. She says she knows that writing style. It seemed like those poems were written by her favorite poet!

[To be continued]

Anyway, the book club has 6 members.

1. "Lee Seol", Yoon Eun Hye (bookstore owner obsessed with romance novels)
2. Lee El (plastic surgeon obsessed with short stories, especially creepy fairy tales a la IOTNBO)
3. Kim Ji Hoon (cafe owner/barista obsessed with dystopian novels)
4. Lee Kyu Hyung (High School teacher obsessed with historical novels)
5. Han Ye Ri (tea barista obsessed with horror novels and podcasts)
6. Esom (tattoo artist obsessed with poetry)

Group rule: every two months they read a book recommended by a different person to adjust to everyone's preferences.

There are good ideas here. Because you give a favorite book genre to each one, it implys some personnalities traits. I could imagine the barista quite depressed or depressing. And now it's also seems obvious to me, the club should be mostly males, like a reverse harem. The group rule is ok, but for the story to go at a better pace, it should more one week than two months.

Required fields are marked *

They don't meet every two months, they just change the genre every two months. ^^

I was thinking of every book member having their own (love)story, so instead of reverse harem they all have their own love line, family or no love line.
My story is more slice of life vibes than romcom. Plus, I kinda hate multiple love interests. Hahaha.

I agree.

We can use the books to tell each characters' story, since they all have different preferences (let's not forget the rule of the club!).

While they explain "why" they chose X book or while they read something their favorite quote or wtv, we can show how that book reflects the character's life or their internal struggles/desires.

And every two episodes we change books/character perspective. Something like that. 🤣

JO HOON-HEE gets a failing independent book store as part of her divorce settlement with her ex-husband, CHA IN-PYO, a college professor she met in graduate school. She has to keep the shop open under the a bad lease with her FIL, LEE SOO-JAE, a famous retired poet, since she gets evicted from upstairs apartment if the store closes. The FIL never liked her so they are constantly at odds. The store takes up too much time and loses too much money. She has no family to help her out. Her ex-husband has won several global literature awards so he has turned into a jet-setting author in Europe and America. He has not seen his daughter in four years. JO’s sassy 11 year old daughter, PARK SO YI, hangs around the store to pick up on the cynical laments of the store regulars: lovelorn single baker JEON MI-DO, shy handyman SEO HYUN-CHUL, burned out high school teacher JUNG HYE-SUNG and widowed seamstress OH YOON-AH. When JO starts getting creepy love letters, she thinks it may be from the creepy next door kimbap store owner, KIM KAP-SOO, who is looking for a new wife to reign in his wild college age daughter, JIN JI-HEE. JIN is in the full YOLO experience in school, getting bad grades and hanging out with loser boys.

The letters slowly get more elegant and romantic which sets off alarm bells in JO’s head. She gets local police man, AHN JAE-HONG, to sweep the building for hidden cameras, since the letters have VERY personal references to her life and routine. Nothing is found which sends the book club regulars into action. They reference detective, crime thrillers and autobiographies in the store to help them profile the writer and create a list of suspects. But everyone things kimbap man is the One, but he denies it when he is confronted by PARK. JIN takes offense that a child has the gall to yell at her father, so they have a huge sidewalk yelling match that makes them both look terrible in front of the neighbors. In the end, PARK gets JIN to spy of her dad to clear his name, but she starts to get doubts as her dad is very secretive after work in his off-limits bedroom.

The mystery is solved when JO is throwing out things from her closet. She finds her Hope Box, and in it are love poems from CHA just prior to their courtship. She begins to see similarities between the sentence structure and imagery. She goes to a book signing to confront CHA. He denies ever writing the college love poems. Before she has a public screaming match, FIL LEE grabs her by the arm and drags her out to the autograph session. FIL LEE admits that he was the matchmaker, it was his love letters that made JO interested in his son. LEE wanted his aging son to marry before it was too late . . . so he picked a plucky, independent and caring person as his wife. LEE said he acted badly so she could get closer to his son (reverse psychology). Why torment her now with new letters? LEE admitted that his son made a huge mistake; his talent and fame overtook his common sense - - -...

A month later, JO receives a letter post-marked from Paris, France. Inside on hotel stationary is a note: “I don’t know why, but I am sorry.” She recognizes real CHA’s handwriting and begins to cry for the first time since her divorce.

I reached 25 minutes screentime. Yeah, writing a screenplay takes time (and I have my normal job). I'm still admirative of the writers of daily dramas, people doing korean sticoms or family/makjang like "the promise".

I have an outline until the end of the episode. I can't evaluate duration (I know, it's bad, but I couldn't plan a lot). I guess it should be < 45 minutes. (or I hope so)

There is some comedy in line with "from now on showtime!" and a mix of style with I-don't-know-what-drama.
