[Cast Away] Hell’s daughter-in-law

Don’t you just hate it when you’re short a few million dollars to produce a drama with your dream team of actors, writers, and directors? *pouts* Well, we found a way to scratch that itch!

Introducing the new Dramabeans community series Cast Away — where Beanies can advocate for their chosen actors and creatives in imaginary roles.

How it works: Each week, we’ll share a hypothetical K-drama plot with you. In the comments, discuss who you think is the perfect cast to play the roles in this imaginary show.

You can also go wild and introduce more characters, rename the show, pick your favorite director, etc. Who knows? Maybe our collective wishing will manifest fantasy casting into reality.

This week’s K-drama plot: meet the in-law from hell

The world’s kindest veterinarian and coolest bad boy fall into a whirlwind romance and decide to get married. The only problem? His dad is the in-law from hell. Literally. He’s Satan.

Dad is supportive of the match and reassures the vet that running hell is just a logistics thing at this point. But Satan’s future daughter-in-law does need a certain amount of “evil points” to join the family. Unfortunately for the kind vet, she would need centuries’ worth of harmless cursing to be able to offset all the good she’s done in her life. Especially when she keeps helping grannies cross the street (add another year of small-time sins to her homework) and treating injured dogs for free (add another decade).

Is it even possible to finish the homework and get married in this lifetime? Y’know, before heaven claims her as one of its own.

Who should play the angelic vet who’s terrible at being a terrible person? Someone who barely manages to spit gum on the sidewalk but feels so sorry she spends the whole afternoon sorting the recycling with the neighborhood ajummas. Who’s your ideal bad boy that will tempt someone to lead a life of mischief? (Personally voting for Kim Woo-bin.) What about the role of Satan? Who will be the perfect mix of imposing and impish and supportive cupid all at the same time?

Throw in suggestions for the “grave” but petty crimes the vet should commit to get that homework done faster — preferably without going to jail or feeling like she compromised her moral compass. As always, feel free to swap the roles. You can even re-imagine Satan as a mother-in-law if you have a perfect actress in mind.

Feel free to request a plot line for future Cast Away posts. We’ll do our best (beep-boop!) to serve a fun twist on it.

I say Han Ji Min! And why not Lee Min Ki! Because I need that pairing again ; )

Another option for Coolest bad boy - Kim Jung-hyun. He had a nice bad boy vibe in school 2017 (the early episodes) and would love to see him play more of that. With Park Bo Young may be?

Ah, I would love a rehash of Behind Your Touch pairing! And even bring Suho back as the ex who's now an angel pointing Han Jimin towards good deeds to keep her away from hell.

For me Shin Min-a is the obvious choice for a "do-gooder" veterinarian, as her role in HomeCha3 was the "proof of case" for such casting...but I'm sort of liking @mary's nudge to switch the genders around a bit.

Remember how good/bad Jang Young-nam was as the Queen of the Underworld in Heavenly Idol? Let's have her reprise that role, this time as Satan, in a quality drama written by @mary in which...actually, Ye Ji-won could be the hilarious, earthly mother of the do-gooder veterinarian played by Kim Min-kyu who falls in love with the daughter of Satan...Go Bo-gyeol. GBG could do it, I think, although my game here of sticking with folks starring in Heavenly Idol means she might be the weak link. She does have the capacity to look nice, but also a bit bad...

Then!!! There could be a love triangle with Lee Jang-woo who would be the "better" match for GBG because he's a proper demon--just the type of guy Satan always wanted for her daughter. But no, Kim Min-kyu will win the day with his petty sins like loving his woman too damn much. I'm liking it.

Let's re-cast Heavenly Idol for good!

Vet: Roh Yoon-seo So adorable!
Prince of Hell: Lee Jae-wook He can be cute, he can be shady, he can't help being swoony, I have absolute confidence in him being them at the same time.
Satan: Park Ho-san A little sly, a little corporate, perfect attractive, supportive, dad type.

I imagine there will be quite a lot of parking crimes in her future (but never in a handicap spot!), but mostly I'm just looking forward to the scene where she meets his dad for the first time!

Thanks! I thought about gender-swapping them, but I wanted Lee Jae-wook to be the prince of hell so badly hahaha! And then I remembered the Park Ho-san exists and I just think he would be perfect. Sleek and smoky, you know?

KIM BYUNG-CHUL, perhaps with a CGI forked snake tongue, would play Satan. But he was not born evil - - - he was drafted by the Devil (LEE SOON-JAE) who wanted to retire to the cool climate of Alaska. Despondent, he has a one night stand with a drunken angel, LEE YOUNG-AE, who goes back to heaven leaving Satan to raise his son as a single parent.

KIM YEON-JA plays the kind, active, elderly neighborhood lady. But she has a big secret: she once dated Satan during high school. When she dumped him, Satan turned evil-evil as his fears of rejection and intimacy fused with his sentimental anger to create his bi-polar personality.

HAN JI-MIN would play the angelic vet (based on her past work and real life charity). KIM BOEM brings his lethargic Doberman to her so she can “ramp of the dog’s evil personality.” Instead, HAN refuses and her treatment makes the Doberman into a cute lap dog. Angry, BOEM hangs around the vet office making snarky remarks that HAN finds cute but her assistant, JO A-RAM, finds cringe.

BOEM refuses to pay for treatment that he is not getting, so HAN keeps his dog making him more and more adorable. Then one day, BOEM asks her out on a date - - - as a way of corrupting her, and to his surprise, she accepts. The date goes so well that BOEM, who is blinded by her innocence, proposes to her. She immediately accepts causing BOEM to have heart convulsions that summons Satan to the scene.

Satan realizes HAN’s purity has caused his son’s dark, stone heart to turn soft and caring. He tells HAN that if she really cares for his son’s health, she has to compromise and do “evil things” or BOEM will die from a “love overdose.”

HAN recruits JO to help her become “bad.” JO helps because BOEM is lying around the office looking like death warmed over and over which creeps her and the customers out. When their petty antics fail (like shoplifting “free” samples) she turns to YEON-JA for help. “Who in heaven’s name made you change your sweet personality for a man?!” YEON-JA would yell. HAN brings her to the office where she meets Satan - - - and in horror, they immediately recognize each other! The emotional war for the couple’s souls are in their hands.

I immediately thought of Park Bo-young and Lee Junho as the main couple. She would be perfect as the extremely good and polite veterinarian.
And he nails the "bad boys". He should come back to the "Just between lovers" kind of look.
As Satan I imagined Lee Deok-hwa, but I think he should be the grand-dad instead of the ML's dad... 🤔

Lee Junho is definitely enough reason to tempt any do-gooder to lead a life of mischief! 😆✌️

You're right, he and Park Bo Young have the perfect aura for the roles!

Apart from Lee Deok Hwa being too old for the role, I would prefer a more dynamic actor. Cha Seung Won would be fantastic!

Lee Se Young and Woo Do Hwan! I'm going off of their previous roles: LSY from Hwayugi/Park's Marriage Contract and WDH from Tempted. For the father-in-law, Sung Dong Il. He can do funny, supportive, and serious very well.

For a younger cast or second couple, Cho Yi-Hyun and Choo Young Woo would make a cute pair. Both have played characters in their late 20s and I think this project will make them shine. Father-in-law can be Ryu Seung-Ryeong. I think he'll do great as the supportive father-in-law since he was great in Moving.

I've casted my kindest veterinarian Kim Dae-myung but I'm having a hard time picturing him being a playboy. He's appears too kind to toy like that.

His Dad? I'll leave that to Lee Jae-yong.

And now, prospective daughter-in-law... Shin Mina.

Now this is my fun part. The neighborhood ahjummas are a trick. We learn that she needs a few thousand swear words here and there, but she's too kindhearted to swear at them so I'll combine them - good-natured ahjummas and their polar opposites.
So...
1.)Hyo-shim's mom. I'm not casting the mom, I'm casting the character. 2.) Baek Hyun-joo - her character limps between ingratiating and soothing. It never depends on the mood. You can never predict her good days. 3.) Kim Young-ok.

Can we switch the leads' genders?
CHOI WOO SHIK as the kind hearted vet
KIM SE JONG as Satan's impish daughter
CHA SEUNG WON as the uber stylish king of the underworld

The task to get evil brownie points? Steal half of things that usually come in pairs (a shoe, a sock, a chopstick) from pet parents and people in the neighborhood.

Oh I should have read the other comments before posting.

Yes, please, gender swap them! Let's not have yet ANOTHER drama with a perfect, virtuous Candy who has to harden up moderately to cope with her in-laws but will never actually do anything wrong because she's too good.

I think Satan should be super cheesy and we should cast Choi Si-won.

I want to play too, though I am still a Kdrama baby 👶. But first I want to salute the absolute genius and cracktastic nature of this castaway 🫡!

The following description of the kind vet - "she would need centuries’ worth of harmless cursing to be able to offset all the good she’s done in her life" - reminds me of Kim Hyang-gi's character in Poong season 1. This is exactly what she struggled to do as Lady Eun-woo 😂. So why not cast her?

Now who would be a suitable bad boy for Kim Hyang-gi? How about we wait for our demon to return from military 🤭. I don't know why I am making this too youthful but they'd seem good together I guess, and I am taking the tone of this drama to be lightly devilish instead of darkly satanic so he'd be a good enough bad boy 😅.

And going one step ahead in making this drama even lighter, I propose Ryu Seung-ryong as to be our satan. I haven't even seen enough of him, but I he can add both gravitas and humour to his role while being a gentlemanly (as opposed to satanic) satan. (Somehow I can't imagine him as an evil character).

What would be the satanic activities that the to-be couple has to do to get Ryu Seung-ryong's approval?

Steal the neighbour's chickens or something (would a vet have a guilty conscience doing that?). I don't know, I kinda suck at mischief 😅.

Hmm. I could see how this can turn into a tale of setting up boundaries because there’s such a thing as being too kind is not good for your mental health. But I’m afraid if this plot happen in real kdrama world this will turn into dumpster fire trying to cross roads with enflamed truck of doom.

But… Go Yoon-Jung would probably fit the bill to play FL. She looks so adorable but can play badass too who finally have had enough and learned boundaries and stopped being a doormat.

The drama gods apologize to Byun Yoo-seok for doing him dirty with his friendless, loveless death in SGNS. As the devil’s son, this time he gets to smolder and gets the girl too.

As for the FL, she builds up her “bad” points by turning junior vigilante. She’ll uphold justice on the wrong side of the law by dog-napping abused pets and finding them better homes.
