Kim Dong-wook leads a Not Very Strong But Charming team

SBS’s 2024 is shaping up to be the year of the cop, and officer Kim Dong-wook (Delightfully Deceitful) welcomes us into the new year with an early special teaser for Not Very Strong But Charming Violent Crimes Unit (roughly translated).

In a crime-comedy that has my full attention, we meet our ragtag team of five in the new trailer who have been temporarily banished relocated to a new office to serve as their base camp. When they arrive, though, the group discover a dilapidated building that was once a children’s preschool and the feelings of disbelief are only made worse when maknae Lee Seung-woo (Vigilante) reads the broken sign incorrectly. After taking a tour inside, Park Ji-hwan (My Lovely Boxer) wryly notes, “Over there is the rainbow room and that’s the sunshine room, so are we the violent crimes room?”

As the sequence continues, we’re then introduced to each member of the unit, starting with the hapless rookie detective Jang Tan-shik (Lee Seung-woo) and the fiery-tempered Seo Min-seo – played by Park Se-wan (Doona). We also have Seo Hyun-woo (Celebrity) playing Jung Jung-hwan, who is described as smitten dumb for his daughters, in addition to bulldozer Mu Joong-ryuk (Park Ji-hwan) who likes to talk with his fists.

Last but not least, the ~elite~ Dongbang Yoo-bin (Kim Dong-wook) has been newly appointed to take charge of the group and the appearing text screens reveal that they’re the lowest ranking violent crimes unit in the nation. When asked for his opinion on the team, Yoo-bin doesn’t shy from our drama’s title and responds, “You don’t seem very strong on first glance. Your heads are hasty, your feet are slow, and your lips are not sealed. But there’s something charming about you as well.”

The teaser then closes as our group get their hero walk and they announce in the text screen that, “We’re mobilizing from the children’s preschool in 2024!”

On the production side, the series has a crew of four taking the reins with PD Ahn Jong-yeon (Racket Boys) and PD Shin Joong-hoon directing, along with scripts by Lee Young-chul and Lee Kwang-jae. The latter two have worked together previously on sitcoms Potato Star 2013QR3 and Smashing on Your Back.

SBS’s Not Very Strong But Charming Violent Crimes Unit is expected to broadcast later this year.

This title gives me trash isekai ranobe vibes. Yunno, those that put the whole plot, full character list and then kitchen sink in their names *shudders* Also sorry, but being charming yet professionally useless is not good for your line of job... Have yall ever thought about drastic career change?

I love that the character who is supposed to be smitten with his daughters has a big headline that literally translates to “daughter fool”. Also feeling pretty proud that I know enough Korean to be able to tell!

I am not sure I want to watch a cop show. But for Kim Dong Wook I may give this a 2 episode try.

Maybe this is going to be Gaus electronics: the police edition and the fact that they are incompetent will not have a detrimental impact on those they are supposed to be protecting by getting the baddies off the streets. If it’s done right it could be hysterical but if it turns into a bad comedy…😬

Oooh - Gaus Electronics: Police Edition would be amazing!!! I'm not a fan of cop dramas, but if this keeps the comedy throughout, I'll definitely try it 👍

I like the cast (Kim Dong-wook especially) and I love how colorful and fun it seems. But yeah. I feel like there's no in-between. If it's bad--and it seems like one of those dramas with potential to be just that--it'll be disastrously bad.

MDL has a ton of alternate title: Not Powerful, but Attractive Crime Squad, The Not Powerful but Attractive Violent Crimes Unit, Gangryeokhajin Anhjiman Maeryeokjeokin Gangryeokban, Gangmaegang, 강매강.

I bet the "final" title will be something else altogether. 🤔 🤣

Who would want Charming violent crime unit? They should have gone for any other department other than violent crime unit e.g. traffic, petty crime investigation...
