News bites: January 25, 2024

  • It’s a busy, busy week for Joo Ji-hoon (Jirisan), who may finally be returning to romance (yay!) after MBC’s Goong, which aired almost two decades ago in 2006. Joo’s agency confirmed that he’s considering an offer for tvN’s Meeting Love on a Log Bridge (roughly translated), which has PD Park Joon-hwa (Alchemy of Souls) at the helm and writing by Im Ye-jin (The Tale of Nokdu). [Osen]

  • In the meantime, new stills have dropped for tvN’s upcoming Wedding Impossible, where we get our first look at the kind but secretive chaebol Kim Do-wan (Doona). Also starring his soon-to-be fake bride Jeon Jong-seo (Bargain) and his objecting younger brother Moon Sang-min (Duty After School), the rom-com premieres on February 26 in the Monday-Tuesday slot. [News1]

  • Yeo Jin-gu (Link – Eat Love Kill) is in talks to become a secret runaway prince in the sageuk rom-com Serenade. Set against the backdrop of a fictional Joseon, the series is currently being planned with PD Noh Jong-chan (Idol: The Coup, Cruel Palace – War of the Flowers) attached to direct and scripts penned by Kim Mi-hee. [YTN]
  • Freshly discharged from army duty, Lee Tae-hwan (Thirty-Nine) is reviewing a role in TV Chosun’s DNA Lover for his first project back to work, potentially joining Choi Siwon (Death’s Game) and Jung In-sun (Let Me Be Your Knight) in the lineup. Production for the rom-com is being led by PD Sung Chi-wook (Tomorrow) and writer Jung Soo-mi (Born Again). [Star News]

  • A dark bundle of stills have come out for Netflix’s A Killer Paradox, showcasing our cat-and-mouse leads, Choi Woo-shik (Our Beloved Summer) and Sohn Seok-gu (D.P. 2). Directed by PD Lee Chang-hee (Hell Is Other People) with Kim Da-min writing, the crime-thriller and webtoon adaptation will be coming to our screens on February 9. [News1]
  • It’s a feast of photos this week with KBS also releasing stills for Let’s Get Grabbed by the Collar, featuring cop Yeon Woo-jin (Title) and chaebol-novelist Jang Seung-jo (Death’s Game). With Kim Haneul (Kill Heel) at the center of our mystery story, the series is slated to premiere this March, following Love Song for Illusion in the Monday-Tuesday slot. [News1 (1), (2)]

I somehow got stuck reading the first item only. Joo Ji-Hoon in a romance drama?!?!?! The PD of AoS?!?!?! 🫠🫠🫠

If this streams on Disney I’ll be crushed, CRUSHED!!! (Oh well, who am I kidding. It will be the final straw to invest in Yet Another Streaming Subscription. 🫣)

It’s good they offer monthly deals so you can jump on watch that drama and all the others you missed and then cancel your subscription.

That’s a good plan, since I have missed out on so much stuff already, that it cues up…! (I’ll just need a month off work then, too, I suppose, LOL!)

Quite bummed after I realized that Flex x Cop will be streaming there, too. 😐😖😫

It is so annoying. It’s good we know from first announcement though so we can manage expectations.

Thank you for the news bites, it helps knowing what is coming in 2024. Hope the broadcasting studios are producing better quality and well written script drama series in 2024.

Our "where to watch it" beanies have declared that Flex x Cop will be on Hulu! I hope you can access it there. I will be cause one more subscription will break me or is that make me broke(n)?

@kcarlsen @diana-hansen Hulu isn’t available in my region at all, but thank you for the heads up anyway🫰😃 I’ll just follow the recaps and might reconsider joining the D+rk side after all…

1) Flex x Cop is on Hulu now. 2) Disney+ won't air in USA, but about half come on Hulu at some point. Tell Me That You Love Me is now on Hulu.

more good news! Thanks for this info.

We did that and still could not get many of the shows that we wanted to watch- Disney+ locked them out of the US. We did get to see a lot of fun things anyway, so our one-month subscription was still a good buy.

The writer and director seem to point at a sageuk which is rather a pity. I would have preferred a hot modern romance!

Looking good for romance in the future drops this year and next. So glad that the remake of Goong is being talked about in a concrete way.

2) Thsi haircolor doesn't suit his skin ton...

3) Yeah \o/ bis!

6) He looks good! Someone who understood that the trend of long hair in the neck is bad!

Surprisly, he looked better in I haven't done my best yet with his awful blond. I think it's because the purpose wasn't to look good 😅

I didn't watch it. Just some scenes with him and the daughter.

1

Yeah, it's not amazing, but I'm hoping it will look better when he's moving than it does in stills. I assumed it was this color because that's what his webtoon character looks like? I haven't read the webtoon so maybe this is totally wrong, but sometimes I know they feel pressure to try to replicate those looks.

When it's an important element for the character like the FL in Tomorrow, I understand. Otherwise, I would prefer a look that looks good in the actor.

No. 5. SERENADE aka SAERAENADAE.
If this project comes to fruition with Yeo Jin-gu I will be there with you @kiara. A few thoughts:
1. This project has been kicking around for a little bit and my notes indicate that it was originally a tvN project with Jo Byeong-ku penciled in as male lead.
2. Now it appears YJG may be slated for ML and I don’t see tvN mentioned so maybe it is still being shopped around for a network.
3. The story itself: a sageuk comedy, a royal prince (thankfully) not a crown prince, and set in a VIRTUAL Joseon. (That is according to MDL). That ‘virtual’ caught my eye since I first heard of this. Is it virtual or fictional or both?
I remember thinking that in one sense the cdrama JOY OF LIFE (2019) might be considered taking place ‘virtually’.

Thank you for all the info! I don't know anything about it. I'm just happy to see a young actor who can freaking do sageuks.

Joo Ji-hoon in romance. Welcome change but who is the leading lady?
Yeo Jin-gu in sageuk . It will be walk in park for him. But there have been too many of Joseon sageuk in this year already. Can we go bit further in past? I need one good non-Joseon seguke this year and no I am not counting Goreyo-Khitan war.

Can't wait to find out who he will be paired with.

A Killer Paradox is not yet here. *sigh* still have two weeks to go!

All these new dramas sound familiar. I imagined a drama about Korea 100 years from now, in the 22nd century. A Korea where there would be no remnants of the culture based on Confucianism, there would be no gender inequality, men would stay at home with the children, and women would go to work, which would only last a normal 8 hours. A society without all these strange problems and, above all, without people being humiliated since their school days by the psychopaths who bully them. Has anyone created such a drama? I've never seen one like this.

Would it be a Korean drama then? Or really any drama?

A drama made by Koreans is a Korean drama. I don't think that storylines set in the next century should continue to be the same type as they are now. This is as much as 100 years of chance to cure society of patriarchy. Fiction could show these possible future better societies.

First of all, what a fantastic title is Let’s Get Grabbed by the Collar?? I can't wait for it to get rebranded to Clutch x Outerwear.

Second, I'm honestly pretty darn excited for a M-T mystery series starring Yeon Woo-jin, Jang Seung-jo (yes, extra please) and Kim Haneul. Let's have some solid weekday fare!

Clutch x Outerwear sounds hilarious. I wish dramas would keep their initial titles which are usually fun/awesome.

Alas, as is almost always the case with Kdramas, the title Let's Get Grabbed by the Collar will probably become something head scratching/boring that lacks the zing of the original

1. Love the premise. Not feeling the sageuk vibes like other beanies but we're only going on a blurb, lol.

2. Just bring it already! I'm loving the "mission impossible" concept.

3. I'm so happy to see a new Yeo Jin Goo drama, but atm the description of this one feels bland.

4. I'm definitely curious. Haven't seen Jung In Sun since Waikiki and a fresh idea rom-com sounds appealing.

5. Not for me even though I love Choi Woo Shik.

6. Love the cast. Not sure I'm up for the story.

1 - articles regarding the show are so LOUD, as if the man never starred in anything romcom-ish since GOONG lmao... What was HYENA then? I liked what writer did with OTP in TTON, pls get a decent actress for this one and make it good!
3 - it gets even better when you read more of the premise - apparently leading prince runs away to find his one true love under commoner's disguise, hilarity expectedly ensues. Once again, most depends on the right actress for FL - YJG will slay his individual part for sure, but OTP stuff... Let's pray.
6 - been a while since I saw YWJ in anything that excites me, perhaps this is it? *hopeful eyes*

I think Hyena is considered to be a legal drama? But the romance part was fantastic and my favourite pairing for Joo Ji-hoon to date.

It was a legal romcom... Perhaps you're right and the addition of "legal" tag makes it a different genre altogether, even tho I personally do not agree in this case. If we have to be SPECIFIC, wasn't GOONG also a teen/high school drama - and a bit of chaebols in hanboks palace intrigue even? Surely he ain't making his grand return to those two subgenres with this new project lol.

No. 3. SERENADE. Yeo Jin-gu. That is a yes.
No. 4. DNA LOVER. Please Lee Tae-hwan (unless financial situations require) let this project pass by. Now in your post military reboot please hold out for a meaty role.
No. 6. KBS’s COLLAR. The drama for adults acted by adults. I will be there (if available on a legal US stream).

#1 If they are going to market this as JJH's first romcom since Goong, it would be great if Yoon Eun Hye was cast as the FL. JJH has said if he could do a role over he would want to do Goong as his acting was so raw and new at the time. Also, the set up would be believable that the mains had been a couple long ago but had to break up. It's fantasy casting and probably won't happen, but imagine the buzz if they did.

Yes, it totally had that quality. I hadn’t seen him in a while and when he saw him in Hyena, I had this, oh right, moment when I figured it out. I went back and did a run through of all their scenes together for fun.
