News bites: January 11, 2024

  • tvN’s Queen of Tears has finally been slated to broadcast, bringing Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day) and Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes) to our screens as our romance’s married pair this coming March. Coming from opposite sides of the track with the former hailing from the country hills while the latter is a chaebol queen, the main cast also includes Park Sung-hoon (The Kidnapping Day), Kwak Dong-yeon (Gaus Electronics), and Lee Joo-bin (Love to Hate You). [Sports Donga]

  • Park Bo-gum (Record of Youth) and Kim So-hyun (My Lovely Liar) have been signed on for JTBC’s Good Boy, both playing former Olympic athletes – from different sports – who start new careers on the police force. The action-comedy is expected to release later this year with PD Shim Na-yeon (The Good Bad Mother, Beyond Evil) at the helm and writing by Lee Dae-il (Life on Mars, Chief of Staff). [News1]
  • In the meantime, JTBC is also busy with promos for Queen of Divorce, sadly taking a page from tvN’s book in wasting perfectly good cake (RIP). But I’m excited all the same for Lee Jia (Pandora: Beneath the Paradise) and Kang Ki-young (The Uncanny Counter 2: Counter Punch) to deliver some just desserts come January 31, helping wronged spouses with a delicious serving of divorce. [JTBC]

  • Shin So-yool (SF8: White Crow) has been added to the cast of MBC’s Our House, joining Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires), Lee Hye-young (Big Bet), and Kim Nam-hee (Family: The Unbreakable Bond) in the lineup. Production for the black comedy-thriller is being led by PD Lee Dong-hyun and writer Nam Ji-yeon (So I Married an Anti-fan). [Newsen]
  • With the premiere now just over a week away, tvN released a dark highlight reel for the historical fiction Captivating the King, revealing the grim path that Jo Jung-seok (Hospital Playlist 2) will be forced to face. As he comes to ascend the throne, he’ll be cruelly entangled with Shin Se-kyung (Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun) as well and the story unfolds on January 21. [Osen]
  • tvN also dropped the first stills for the timeslip romance Pick Up Sun-jae and Run, showcasing leads Byun Woo-seok (Strong Girl Nam-soon) and Kim Hye-yoon (Snowdrop). The web novel adaptation has scripts penned by Lee Shi-eun (True Beauty), with PD Kim Tae-yub (When My Love Blooms) and PD Yoon Jong-ho co-directing. [Sports Donga]

Big names for the first two, but I'm more excited about the Park Bo-gum x Kim So-hyun one than Kim Soo-hyun x Kim Ji-won.
Also want to watch Pick Up Sun-jae and Run.

That poor cake indeed! 😨

QUEEN OF TEARS still looks interesting, but the title sure sounds like a lot of melo. 🤔

… here we go again with the high school uniforms. 🙄😂 What a stark contrast to the sexy villain persona Byun Wooseok played in STRONG GIRL. (Ps: the drama is called “Loverly Runner” on MDL. Timeslip romance & that title? Is the show stuck in 2023…? 🤔)

Calling it Lovely Runner is actually meta narrative as the show is about time slipband the title is also travelling to the past 🫨😉

Four out the six sound like they will make the ‘I earned some beans of joy this year’ list, hopefully, there will more beans on that list than last year.

Hear hear. I barely watched any dramas last year. Hopefully I'll have watched a good amount by this year's end.

1) Queen of Tears : I'm waiting for it since they announced the main cast! I like the supporting cast too because they should be lead in their own dramas >_<

2) Good Boy : I didn't specially like Park Bo-gum and Kim So-hyun's last dramas. So I hope for the best!

4) We will get a little Tomorrow's reunion because Rowoon will make a cameo for our favourite styled grim reaper, Kim Hee-sun!

6) I love Kim Hye-Yoon and I'm excited to see her in a new drama. She has the habit to be paired with giants, it will be fun. I'm excited to watch Lee Seung-Hyub as musician in this drama, as leader of N.Flying he will be perfect for this role!

1. One could only hope the supporting cast is just as good and developed as the leads, then. I love strong supporting cats so I hope this is the case
6. Love her too!!! I hope her character will bring to the table the same level of energy as in Extraordinry You!

Queen of Tears is looking all warm and cozy, and definitely relaxed.
Kwak Dong-yeon🤭🤭🤭.

When I read 2's plot summary on Asianwiki yesterday, I immediately recalled this week's beanies recommendation and how similar it is, except the transition here is career wise.

The wedding cakes caused no trouble my dear Amazing Troubleshooters team , the erring partners did.

Our House is a one of a kind. How they subverted the trope of oil and water family relationships is what's piquing my interest the most.

January 21 be here, stat!

1. YESSSSSHHHH

2. I have never found PBY to have good or any chemistry with his FLs. I don't really get his appeal honestly. I think the only time I believed him in a romance was Reply 1988 and acting wise he is just fine to me. Maybe this will change my mind about him, because I like KSH.

3. I really want this to be GOOD!!

6. They keep putting poor KHY with MLs twice her size, lol.

Kinda agreed on PBG. He's a good actor, for sure, but he hasn't wowed me since 2015's I Remember You. I wish he'd do more of those kinds of roles.

Second ditto on PBG. I always find him vague and distant, reciting his lines with no spark.

No. 4. MBC’s OUR HOUSE. This is the first I have heard of this drama but what a cast of female actors. I loved Kim Hee-sun in MBC’s TOMORROW (2022) and I haven’t seen Lee Hye-young since her great performance as villain Judge Cha Moon-sook in tvN’s LAWLESS LAWYER (2018).
If @kurama you are working on getting a Rowoon cameo (and that would be great) I have to start working on getting LL alumna Yeom Hye-ran a cameo in this.
(And since it is a MBC production there is a chance that a legal US stream will be available.)

So many fun choices! I even had to get a new notebook with larger pages to keep track of everything I watch! Good sounding dramas and lots of snow--perfect for settling in with some hot tea and blankets for extended watching!

I just want to echo @tccolb here--what do kdrama promo teams have against beautifully decorated cakes? Just think how long it took to get that elaborate icing/fondant design, and then have Lee Ji-ah just quickly ruin it with her fist.

Why not have the FL ripping a fake bridal veil or something, or hammering a fake ring? Message just as effective, no messy hands, and no food tossed away in the interests of a promo poster. Apparently these concept designers never heard of my grandmother's saying when it came to food: "Waste not, want not!"

1. ❤ Kim Soo-hyun ❤ I would like to sit with him like that.

2. Park Bo-gum doesn't "action-comedy" sound like Flexi X Cop.

3. Yah!! Don't waste cake ... jebal!! 🎂

4. Why no reference to Chansung?

5. Already in watchlist.

6. Hmm ... wonder what @CecilieDK thinks of that.

Well he's supposed to be playing Kim Hee-sun's brother so I'm unhappy he's not mentioned in the article. Does that mean he only has a cameo?

Oh! 😆 I didn't know!

I only said that because every time this show is mentioned the 2PM song immediately plays in my mind!

I laughed out loud when I saw your comment that Chansung will be in it too!!

1. Super excited for what will undeniably be a popular hit, but oh it stings to see Kwak Dong-yeon back in supporting roles. Can he please, for the love of the drama gods, be the lead in a decently-scripted romcom? It's all I ask for.

2. In dramaland, even elite athletes eventually (d)evolve to cops. It's an anticipated pair so I had hoped for better than yet another police (with its contractually required serial killers and all) drama.

3. What was the point of ruining that cake?? What do smashed cakes have to do with divorce lawyers??

4. More than the cast, what I find exciting about this is the synopsis says it has a daughter-in-law/mother-in-law team up to protect their family. I'm so here for this new trend away from the typical nagging, abusive MILs to ones who support their new daughters.

5. I'm happy to have Jo Jung-suk in a sageuk again, but will anything ever live up to the brilliant heights of Nokdu Flower?

6. Poor Kim Hye-yoon will once again have neck pains due to her costar. Is it weird that this teen/coming-of-age time-slip drama is my most anticipated of this entire list? Probably, but I just love KHY so much and want her to be in every project ever. I hope they choose a better English language title soon.

1. I really love him in supporting roles, though! He always bring so much and usually that character ends up being my favorite.

6. Same. Lots of dramas I want yo watch are set during school days and I'm like huh????

1. He's usually mine too, but he's so good I can't help but want bigger things for him.

6. For me its less being into high school settings and more about being interested in young (or "young") up-and-coming actors. Extraordinary You, for example, was a great gathering of future talent.

1. I’m so excited I could scream. I opted for a very high pitched squeal instead lol. Excited for the cast, the PD, the writer - basically everything. My expectations are probably way too high but at this point, I can’t help it!

2. Im honestly not the biggest PBG fan. I feel like he’s very overrated and his dramas are almost always not my cup of tea. But KSH is my fav and im happy for her to not be stuck with yet another rookie actor. It’s been a while since that’s happened (Ruler was prob the last and damn my expectations for that drama was stratospheric…)

PD of Beyond Evil. hopefully a good combo that will rock kdramaland.
