[Cast Away] Marry my mother-in-law

Don’t you just hate it when you’re short a few million dollars to produce a drama with your dream team of actors, writers, and directors? *pouts* Well, we found a way to scratch that itch!

Introducing the new Dramabeans community series Cast Away — where Beanies can advocate for their chosen actors and creatives in imaginary roles.

How it works: Each week, we’ll share a hypothetical K-drama plot with you. In the comments, discuss who you think is the perfect cast to play the roles in this imaginary show.

You can also go wild and introduce more characters, rename the show, pick your favorite director, etc. Who knows? Maybe our collective wishing will manifest fantasy casting into reality.

This week’s K-drama plot: A time-traveling revenge cupid

In a totally not-a-ripoff of a popular, currently airing revenge drama, a woman discovers right before death that her cantankerous mother-in-law was the childhood sweetheart of her distant uncle. It was this hidden connection that led to said MIL bullying her all throughout the marriage. When the daughter-in-law wakes up from death and discovers she has traveled ten years back in time, she decides to play cupid between her uncle and future mother-in-law.

Of course, nothing is ever easy. Both parties claim they were wronged and would rather die than reunite. (They say before going to the basement to stare lovingly at old photographs.) And what’s worse, for some reason, as our heroine inches closer to her cupid plan, her own future marriage starts to become uncertain. Are the two relationships inversely connected?

Sorry, MIL, looks like it’s time to break up your relationship again!

Which mother and daughter-in-law duo would be perfect for this story? They have to drive you mad when they’re arguing, make you cackle when they’re being petty, and make you cry when they’re being honest. (You can also mix it up by swapping in a father or son-in-law.) And who is your dream older couple pairing? Imagine they have their own full story and they’re not just a comedic side plot. Are there any veteran actors you would love to see in a twilight romance? The future husband’s role isn’t fully fleshed out, but feel free to cast him too and give him a full story. Or you can imagine that it’s a drama gimmick that we never even see the husband’s face until *BAM* a drama meta cameo happens in episode 16.

Feel free to request a plot line for future Cast Away posts. We’ll do our best (beep-boop!) to serve a fun twist on it.

I'm not very creative, so I'll just pick Lee Mi-sook and Jung Ryeo-won for the mother and daughter-in-law duo. This time, Junho would play the future husband. And I want Choi Moo-sung to be the uncle. Lee Mi-sook and Choi Moo-sung give off different vibes, so that kind of makes sense they didn't end up together, and it would be interesting to see how/if the traveling back in time would make it work.

That’s so funny I read it and immediately thought of the ridiculously funny drama within a drama on Search: WWW! Didn’t the son in law on that marry his mother in law, who had had surgery to fool him?

Roh Yoon-Seo falls for her biology tutor Chae Jong-Hyeop. Instead of hitting the books, they hit the mattress resulting in an unwanted pregnancy. Chae’s mother, Lee Yu-ri is crazy. She lives like a hermit with a nasty temper. She is against Roh ruining her son’s life. She is totally against all forms of marriage and their relationship because she was betrayed by her past boyfriend who promised to marry her despite her flaws (and their pregnancy) but never came back from the military service for her. Roh and Lee fight - - causing Roh to fall down stairs. She is taken to the hospital where she dies from internal bleeding. Lee is arrested for manslaughter.

Roh goes back into time as Kim Ji-Yu. She wakes up during the Lunar New Year. At the family reunion, a distant uncle has returned from the United States as an Army Captain Yeon Jeong-Hun. She recognizes him from an old picture in Lee’s house. Roh takes Uncle around Lee’s neighborhood in order to force a reunion but she only meets Chae who is cold and mean to her since she is just a pushy child. The more Roh attempts to push Uncle on livid Lee, the Chae becomes more enamored with the sweet girl-next-door, Lee Song-Yi, who is the opposite of his bitchy & bitter mother. Roh plans to send Lee her favorite dish, Jajangmyeon, with a love note she made for her Uncle. Lee chokes on the engagement ring hidden in the noodles, but has a cupid bolt moment to forgive Uncle and tries to seduce him. He is dumbfounded and repulsed by Lee’s sudden change in behavior. Roh joins forces with Lee to get Uncle to change his view, which leads Chae to yell at Roh that he does not want to have his father back when he abandoned them. Chae vows he would never marry anyone, leaving his girlfriend, who overhears their argument, in tears. They break up and Chae becomes as bitter and distance as his mother had been. Roh realizes too late that her actions have fundamentally changed the personalities of those around her detriment. She realizes that she has repeated the past she tried to change when Chae joins the military vowing never to see her again.

KIM HYE SOO as the MIL-from-hell. She'd knock this role out of the ballpark for sure!

CHO YI HYUN as the FL, extending her match-making prowess to this drama. Imagine her teeny-tiny self making faces and talking behind the super charismatic MIL.

YU HAE JIN as the uncle, because there's a huge chunk of meta and I'd love to see his chemistry with KHS!

Or Cho Jin-woong for the uncle. They didn’t get together the first time around (referring to Signal) and are given a second chance this time!!

Does this involve contracting ToD to take out the father-in-law first?
If so, this is super dark and I'm on board already.

Cast aways are really fun these days 🙂.

My casting suggestions are totally based on previous chemistries that I enjoyed. The MIL should be the star of the show instead of the DIL, right? In that case, I'd like to propose Kim Mee-kyung as our MIL. She is the veteran actress who DESERVES her own show! Also, I think it is not necessary to cast a leading actress as DIL 🤔. If we focus just on the comic chemistry, Jung Woon-sun who played her elder daughter in Forecasting Love and Weather. They were a crack in that show 😆. Let's let her be the DIL this time!

My suggestion for our uncle to be paired with Kim Mee-kyung is again based on a previous story, where this fellow's one-sided crush was sadly never fulfilled. Yes,I'm talking about Jo Han-chul from Healer. To go-off on a tangent, he reminds me of John Cho (or I must have prosopagnosia 😅), and watching his bitter-sweet crushing on Kim Mee-kyung in Healer further reminded me of John Cho in Selfie 🤭.

As for the husband... let's reveal him in the cameo. The scene is like this: the MIL and our uncle are in a restaurant, eagerly waiting for the reveal (the DIL has confided in her about "the future she has avoided", and now she wants to see whether she really missed something or not 🤭, and drags her current beau, who is a totally pliable, chummy, crazy-for-her dude, along! 😆). They are fake arguing about whether the dreaded encounter is worth it, just then the door opens... Kim Mee-kyung's mouth pops open... our hero is surrounded by a halo of strong backlighting... the halo slowly makes way for a reveal... he's a hottie! Kim Mee-kyung is entranced, and her beau cuts a sorry figure looking at HIS FACE and HER REACTION 😆... but, only for a second... until, the waiter walks in and spills coffee on the hottie... and he hurls abuses at the poor guy... and Kim Mee-kyung is quickly disenchanted, curses the hottie under her breath, counts her blessings and looks lovingly at her her now smiling beau! ________________________ Fade out, LOL (Suggest the hottie. I don't know why, but only Heo Jung-do pops up in my mind. Because, hotties can be cracks too 😆).

On second thoughts, Heo Jung-do can be the chummy uncle (he would totally suit the "chummy" part as he showed us in My Demon), and Jo Han-chul can be the hottie husband missed out on, who appears in the cameo. Throw in a clever callback like Kim Mee-kyung saying, "He looks like he was a cop in his past life" 🤭.
