Disney+ unveils their 2024 K-content lineup

Taking a leaf from the Netflix promo guidebook, a new video announcement has come out on Disney+, allowing us a sneak preview into the year’s lineup. It’s actually exciting to see early footage and stills, as many of these shows seem to go behind an iron curtain after initial casting news, making us wait months – or years even – before we can start preparing the popcorn. Note to self: buy more snacks.
Drama: The Impossible Heir
Release date: February 28, 2024
Need to know: In just over a week, the crime-suspense will have our trio of social misfits teaming up, with Lee Jae-wook orchestrating the ultimate plan in order for Lee Jun-young and Hong Su-ju to usurp the chaebol throne.
Drama: Blood Free (previously Dominant Species)
Release date: April 2024
Need to know: Joo Ji-hoon, Han Hyo-joo, Lee Hee-joon, Lee Moo-saeng, and Park Ji-yeon take us to a new world in the latest sci-fi thriller by Forest of Secrets writer Lee Soo-yeon, where humankind has entered an age of artificially cultured meat.
Drama: Uncle Sam-shik
Release date: May 2024
Need to know: Marking Song Kang-ho’s much-anticipated drama debut, the period piece follows his friendship with Byun Yo-han during the stormy 1960s in South Korea. The historical also stars Lee Kyu-hyung, Jin Ki-joo, and Seo Hyun-woo.
Drama: Red Swan (previously Hwa-in Family Scandal)
Release date: Q3 or Q4 2024
Need to know: Although it was a dream come true for Kim Haneul to marry into the Hwa-in Group, what awaits her on the other side is closer to a nightmare. But the melodrama can’t stop here and it’s only about to get more complicated, with her devoted bodyguard Rain secretly crafting revenge against the conglomerate.
Drama: The Tyrant
Release date: Q3 or Q4 2024
Need to know: As a spin-off of The Witch film series, the 4-episode action sci-fi follows Cha Seung-won, Kim Sun-ho, and Kim Kang-woo in the merciless race to find the missing last sample from a superhuman experiment.
Drama: Trigger
Release date: Q3 or Q4 2024
Need to know: An underdog office comedy starring Kim Hye-soo, Jung Sung-il, and Joo Jong-hyuk, who need to put their bickering aside and put their heads together to save their mystery-documentary show before the network pulls the plug.
Drama: Gangnam B-Side (previously Bulk)
Release date: Q3 or Q4 2024
Need to know: Ji Chang-wook is back in Gangnam’s seedy underground after The Worst of Evil last year, teaming up this time with Jo Woo-jin and Ha Yoon-kyung in a ~black connection~ union between a demoted cop, penniless prosecutor, and mysterious broker.
Drama: Light Shop
Release date: Q3 or Q4 2024
Need to know: Joo Ji-hoon graces our screens again in a mystery-horror with Park Bo-young, bridging the mortal and spirit realms as our title’s shop owner. With the original webtoonist and Moving writer Kangfull penning the scripts, actor Kim Hee-won takes the reins in production in his drama director debut.
As a special mention, the variety program The Zone: Survival Mission will also be returning later this year with Season 3.
In addition to Disney+’s original shows, the following dramas will be streaming on the platform internationally (availability may differ by region):
- MBC’s Wonderful World (March 1, 2024), starring Kim Nam-joo, Cha Eun-woo, Kim Kang-woo, and Im Se-mi
- MBC’s Chief Detective 1958 (April 2024), starring Lee Je-hoon, Lee Dong-hwi, Choi Woo-sung, and Yoon Hyun-soo

I want to watch them all. Personally, I think I prefer the k-contents (especially dramas) from Disney over Netflix. I mean look at the casting: From Ju Jin Hoon, Lee Jae Wook, Lee Je Hoon.

This is my favorite one too. I am sure, the fees are not cheap to get a mega A-lister like Song-kang ho to act on the small screen. But, i love it, just as I love Byun Yo Han and Lee Kyu Hyung...they are all amazing actors.

I was surprised as anyone else that Disney gave me some of my favorite Kdramas last year (Call It Love, Moving, Race, etc). With this slate, I’m keeping my subscription for another year.
But I am confused. Didn’t we read last year they were cutting their kdrama budget? Were these produced earlier? Or am I remembering wrong? Or they changed their mind after Moving’s success?

I think so too. I also think that some of these content were actually projects that were scheduled to be aired in 2023, like Uncle Sam Shik. But, due to the lack of budget or so, they cannot be released last year.

They lost billions; I'm not sure MOVING could recoup that. Last summer, Disney laid off over 7,000 employees, mostly from streaming, TV departments, etc. They saved over 5 billion. That's how they recoup their losses.

So there is hope for Yoo Ahin yet if Joo Jihoon managed to make a come back after a number of years. I have loved Yoo Ahin’s acting and I hope he survives this ordeal and comes back to acting healthy and happy.

Well, I appreciate the differences but there were commonalities between the two situations too. I will continue to hope for Yoo Ahin as I don’t want to think that his situation is hopeless. It is too cruel otherwise.

It’s fair to hope he’ll be back after a while and considering how lax SK’s attitude is towards males, that may be the case. However, realistically speaking, the differences in JJH and YAI’s situations, ages, and the way they handled the fall out far outweighs the similarities here.

Hmmm... Disney doesn't seem to like the same genres as me 😂 Impressive casts, though! Nothing on this list that looks like a 2024 answer to Call it Love, but I'm currently enjoying Flex x Cop, so maybe I'll branch out again and try something different? The Impossible Heir looks pretty dark, which doesn't appeal to me, but I love Lee Jae-wook, so I'll probably try that one.

Is Gangman B side a spin off of The Worst of Evil? I don't even know what happened with that show. I assume it was a bad end for all those involved.
Trigger, I recognized the guy from Attorney Woo and the judge from Juvenile Justice and I'm like "interest piqued" haha. Also bickering + behind the curtain premise is even more appealing to me.

It may be different in other countries, but I would like Prime to start with letting me know dramas are coming at all. At the very least, please feature them on the day of release or make them easily searchable. It's a really bad interface where I am.

I have been watching 14 episodes of Marry my husband on Prime. And yesterday I couldn’t find this title anywhere on the main page. You would expect it to be in ‘continue watching’ or somewhere in the main page. but nope. I had to go search the title and find episode list and click on play.

I'm definitely in for the 2 Joo Ji-Hoon dramas - he picks interesting SFF/Horror stuff that I love to watch.
Ji-Hoon Oppa starred in one of the first K-Dramas I've watched - if not the first - ZOMBIE on Netflix. I had not been bitten by the K-Drama bug yet* even though I watched the DRAMA avidly. IMHO, ZOMBIE is hands down the best Zombie series of the 21st century so far. It didn't hurt that I absently noted that he was handsome AF hahahaha!
So yes, Ji-Hoon Oppa, I shall be watching both your latest upcoming Sci-Fi (BLOOD FREE) and Horror (LIGHT SHOP) offerings.
Bonus that we'll get to see Park Bo-Young in LIGHT SHOP - it'll be my first time seeing her in a Horror drama.
*Note: The honour of the K-Drama that pushed me into the fandom goes to ROOKIE HISTORIAN GOO HYE-RYEUNG.

@bbstl Well, the man chooses to star in dramas that I like to watch and he's an excellent actor so what's not to like?
All things being equal, if there are two actors/actresses of the same calibre and one of them chooses dramas that interest me and the other doesn't, I will gravitate more towards the one who does the dramas I like.
I think that's why it took me a while to warm up to Lee Dong-Wook - I don't like some of the dramas he's been in. And I like Ji Chang-Wook but he hasn't reached "favourite actor" status with me simply because his drama choices are hit-and-miss for me.
Joo Ji-Hoon, Park Hyung Shik, Park Eun-Bin, and Park Bo-Young on the other hand, have all starred in dramas and genres that I generally like watching. So every time a new drama they are in drops, I would automatically check it out because whatever they are starring is is almost certain to be engaging.

With this list, I may finally succumb to get a D+ package…
That aside, this certainly looks like an exciting line-up. As to k-content or not, these do not sound like the standard Kdrama fare but more like kmovie. There have been more and more crossover in recent years for the movie lots dipping into dramaland which I believe is a good thing to push the boundary.
If Song Kang-ho is now doing his first ever drama, it may not be too far fetched to see Park Chan-wook at the helm of a drama. (We can hope but mind you, Wong Kar-wai just did one.)

I do find it interesting that Disney has decided to make its kdrama signature generally dark and violent. But I guess it fits with their current t.v. properties, like the Marvel comic series, as well as their traditional movie penchant for killing off Moms.

As a US viewer I generally skip posts on Disney+ programming but I was told Lee Je-hoon’s MBC drama CHIEF DETECTIVE 1958 would be available on Disney+ so I came here to check and dang there it is.
So much for the big three networks MBC, SBS and KBS making their dramas first available on Kocowa followed by licensing to Viki.
Also sorry to see that the period drama UNCLE SAMSIK won’t be on my upcoming viewing list either.
