Song Kang-ho becomes Uncle Sam-shik to Byun Yo-han in new period drama

Clockwise: Song Kang-ho, Byun Yo-han, Seo Hyun-woo, Lee Kyu-hyung

The main lineup has been announced for the period bromance Uncle Sam-shik, which marks the great Song Kang-ho’s (Emergency Declaration) highly anticipated drama debut.

Set in the turbulent 1960’s era of South Korea, the story follows the friendship of our title’s Uncle Sam-shik as well as the character Kim San – played by Song Kang-ho and Byun Yo-han (Mr. Sunshine) respectively. San was one of the lucky few who got to study in the U.S. on a scholarship and returned to Korea afterwards with big dreams for his future. But reality was harsher than San expected, which is when Uncle Sam-shik appeared in his life – offering assistance and reassuring San that they shared the same dreams.

Lee Kyu-hyung (May It Please the Court), on the other hand, takes on the part of Kang Sung-min, who had been staying by Sam-shik’s side solely to take advantage and further his own ambitions. But having no further use of Sam-shik, Sung-min is ready to cut all ties and their now hostile relationship becomes a factor in pushing Sam-shik to San.

Rounding out the main quartet, Seo Hyun-woo (Call My Agent) plays a colleague of San named Jung Han-min. He shares a similar background of serving in the military and studying abroad through a scholarship – in addition to learning that chasing your dreams is not an easy feat. But, unlike San, Han-min is a soldier through and through, and his passion is about creating reforms in the military.

Written and directed by filmmaker Shin Yeon-shik (Cassiopeia), the 10-episode drama has finalized casting and is currently still in the planning stages.

This looks interesting it’s a period of time we don’t usually see in dramas so I know nothing about life in Korea at that time. I look forward to seeing a male mentor/friend focused drama.

Not to mention a fair bit of betrayal.
I am really looking forward to seeing actors of such high calibre as Song Kangho and Byun Yohan appearing in a drama. This is a rare event.

I guess it was just a matter of time before Song Kang-ho popped up in dramaland. I wonder when Sol Kyung-gu and Park Hae-il will get their own prestige shows.

Then again, it seems to me that it's not so much the big names in film as the less mainstream ones who bring something new to K-drama, like Lee Kyoung-mi (School Nurse Files), Roh Deok (Glitch) and now Shin Yeon-shik. I've seen a bit of his work, and it's even more different from K-drama than Lee and Roh's films.

I want Park Hae-il to experience a whole drama and hopefully bring him a film writer/director. If Lee Joon-ik can do it, there is hope for Kim Han-min. Right? Someone needs to light up dramaland with some (non-mindless) action sageuks. 😂

It'd be great to have a 6- or 10-episode sageuk with a story like Kim Han-min's War of the Arrows or Hwang Dong-hyuk's The Fortress. But without an angle like zombies or whatever, I wonder if any network would come up with the money for it...
