Cultivating Blood Free meat with Han Hyo-joo and Joo Ji-hoon

Writer Lee Soo-yeon — who previously brought us the acclaimed Forest of Secrets and Grid — is finally back with the Disney+ original Blood Free, and from the looks of it, it’ll be just as thought-provoking as her usual fare. In the near future, rapid advancements in technology have allowed for a groundbreaking invention — the replacement of farmed animals with synthetic meat.

As the researcher Yoon Ja-yoo who pioneered the foray into artificial meat, Han Hyo-joo (Moving) stands proud at the helm of the BF — or Blood Free — corporation. “In order to become perfect, the chains must be broken,” Ja-yoo declares, and her words are met with applause from her enraptured audience. “Humankind must liberate itself from the food chain.”

A stoic salute introduces us to Joo Ji-hoon (Jirisan) as the ex-marine Woo Chae-woon, who currently serves as Ja-yoo’s personal bodyguard. “That was the beginning of BF,” Chae-woon narrates, and we witness the high-tech process of culturing meat in a laboratory. A new age of lab-grown meat has dawned, and Chae-woon proclaims that mankind has reached “the apex of the pyramid that will completely dominate the ecosystem.”

For all its game-changing utility, Chae-woon seems to realize the implications of such an innovation, and the danger lurking behind it. “The best technology I’ve known has always taken the form of a weapon,” he observes, as Ja-yoo is accosted in her car by a crowd of anguished protesters. Does BF meat truly shatter the shackles of the food chain, or does it simply transpose it within the human race itself?

A tempest of instability is brewing on the horizon, summed up in brief glimpses of gas masks, gun shootouts, and a body falling onto a car’s hood. A chyron elucidates the dilemma brought on by synthetic meat: is it a disaster, or a blessing? There are always two sides to a coin, but even with blood staining her face, Ja-yoo remains resolute in her vision. “Don’t you want to become a wholly dominant species?”

Helmed by writer Lee Soo-yeon and PD Park Chul-hwan, who previously collaborated on Grid, the ten-part thriller Blood Free will be serving up its first slice on April 10.

I am bothered by the "synthetic" meat business. So I am looking forward to what writernim prepared for us.
Of course, its great to see Han Hyo Joo and Joo Ji Hoon too. 😅

Is it just me who is getting flash back to the film Okja? Which was also about changing food production on a global scale but was using artificially modified animals to corner the market and also had a power hungry woman at the helm.

Tilda Swinton is scary and hysterical in Okja. Hope HHJ’s character is different.

It was too pantomime for me the way she was presented visually and verbally was ridiculous it was hard to watch. The girl character had realistic responses to the situation and the child actor was superb.

Working up some field trip activities for elementary age students I learned some worrisome facts about the contributions of the meat producing industries to global warming. Here's just one, "If cows were a country they would rank the 3rd highest greenhouse gas polluters bed China and the US." Humans need to drastically reduce the amount of meat they eat (not likely) or develop other protein sources.
What bothers me in this promo is dialogue about becoming the dominant species/apex predator. Isn't that how we got ourselves into this mess?

As I liked Grid a lot
more than Forest of Secrets 2, I will stay optimistic.

as a longtime drama watcher, I have seen ones a lot worse than Grid. I went in not knowing it was by the same writer of Forest of Secrets (=no expectations) and was entertained by it. Like I say, there are a lot worse works out there in drama land. Main thing is to not expect anything similar to Forest of Secrets.

Forest of Secrets 2 was pretty lame. Didn't like the new characters who got too much screen time and brought no joy. Grid was a better use of time than that for sure.

the premise seems to be more like Grid though (environmental threats, etc) people who like Forest of Secrets may like similar dramas in the investigative/detective/police genre.

Not sure if I can buy the story. It depends on what becomes the main driving force behind BF. Of course, I have to try it for the MLs and hope it works.

I still don't understand how this is different from an Impossible Burger. Or why that isn't the title - you'd think the PPL possibilities would overcome the trademark concerns.

I don't understand in what way you don't understand how they are different and the implications that emerge from this one. Maybe you will be kind to let us know.

About the PPL possibilities, I think that they have a bigger problem at hand in USA and i believe that more so in SK, if we just see how much they appreciate eating real meat grilled shown in kdramas. Here are some articles about that industry:

Impossible Burger. I see what you did there.

I *think* the difference is btwn meat cultured from animal tissue vs plant-based imitation meat. The former exists but isn’t widespread whereas the latter of course has been around for ages. But speculating here…
