Live Your Own Life: Episodes 48-49 (Drama Highlights)

With the chaebol drama wrapped up, it’s time to solve the mystery of Hyo-shim’s dad’s disappearance. It’s a depressingly normal, tired tale – he secretly ran away with his coworker because he was “lonely” and apparently didn’t want the burden of the family he chose to create. He and his new woman started a new life together and never looked back at the wife and children he abandoned. When Hyo-shim confronts him, he’s too cowardly to do much of anything. He just hangs his head in shame and says he has no right to say anything, which sounds like a convenient way to avoid facing the pain he caused head on. He even begs Hyo-shim not to tell the rest of the family they’ve talked, acting like it’s for their own good. Of course, he doesn’t know that his new wife has met with his family behind his back. He’s terminally ill with only weeks to live, unless he gets a new liver, so she goes to ask his family to donate. Wow, that’s brazen. It’s hard to have any sympathy at all for these two, despite their crying and head-hanging.

Mom forbids the kids to donate their livers, but of course, they don’t listen. Hyo-do gets tested but isn’t a match, and Hyo-sung’s liver is busted from years of drinking. Any guesses who that leaves? Yep, filial Hyo-shim strikes again. She has no love left for her dad, but she wants her family to have time to heal and not feel guilty over his death. For some reason, she doesn’t tell Tae-ho she’s going to donate her liver. Maybe it’s because, rather than supporting her when she asked him to postpone the wedding so she could deal with a major family crisis, he instead threw a hissy fit and even accused her of not loving him. He did get his act together and apologize, but that whole reaction wasn’t a good look. To top it off, he then asks Tae-min to have him transferred to the England office after the wedding; Hyo-shim can study and have a break from her needy family. Does he come to this conclusion after a discussion with Hyo-shim about what she wants to do? Nope, he just unilaterally decides their future. Great start to a lifelong relationship.

Meanwhile, Tae-hee is like a shadow of herself. She feels guilty for the crimes of her parents and can barely look at Tae-min and Tae-ho. With both her parents now in jail, a recent divorce, and the loss of her business, she’s unsure what to do with her life. Halmeoni sees her struggling and gets an idea. She takes Tae-hee to Uicheon Villa, hoping she can find herself among the chaotic neighbors the way Halmeoni did. What she doesn’t realize is that those neighbors are Tae-hee’s ex-husband’s family. Aha, I was wondering how they’d throw her and Hyo-do back together again. They have both matured thanks to their respective family dramas, so maybe this time it won’t be a disaster?

Yep, filial Hyo-shim strikes again
What does this writer take me for? 🙄🙄🙄🙄. As a viewer , I find it highly disappointing. They've just moved 2 steps back 10 steps back with Hyo-shim's liver being the next thing they'll milk off her.
Not even the knowledge of the liver's regenerative ability will make me look at this arc with any sort of pity-party. Everything will be scornful.

Between Tae-ho's unilateral decision once again and Hyo-shim's liver being a donor match, Tae-ho is still very much okay in my honest opinion.

I've resigned to the fact that while Hyo-shim is open to taking charge of life and she has done these things in steps - moving out, quitting her job and pursuing the completion of her dropped university degree - I worry that there exists given situations where she'll never extricate herself from being milked. Hence some decisions are made without consulting her. I'd sincerely recommend that in addition to actualizing this England stay, Hyo-shim goes for psychiatric counselling. If she doesn't get psychological help, I see her returning from England at the end of her studies and catapulting herself back to allowing all and sundry milk her blood all over again.

What did you think of Tae-ho's speech (for which he later apologized...but I dunno, it seemed pretty heartfelt at the time) about how he "now understands" that Hyo-shim will never actually leave her family?

It made me seriously consider the way that Hyo-shim literally going her own way--extricating herself from all who would milk her of anything--would also be the best for Tae-ho (of all people).

Honestly @attiton I don't know.

I really feel Tae-ho is getting the short end of the stick in this. No one is saying Hyo-shim should not stick her neck out for her family. But in this manner? There's an extent to which I'll allow my spouse do the things Hyo-shim does before I nip it in the bud. If she doesn't extricate herself from her family, I fear for Tae-ho. He's still going to love her no doubts. I'm left wondering if it'll still be love or him going through the motions in love. Honestly, it is not fair to him. It is not fair to anyone.

I am completely with Tae Ho here and totally felt his frustration. This is no way to treat someone you are about to marry. If this were not dramaland, I'd say this marriage is completely doomed. She stood him up multiple times, ghosted him, pushed him away, lied/hid extremely important info from him (and he knows it), all at the point when they are about to get married. Yikes! At the very least she should tell him what is going on and even if he does not agree with her, he would have supported her, as that's what he's been doing time and time again. She has basically been behaving exactly he way he describes: her actions are telling him that her husband-to-be is not very high on her priority list and she will always run back to her family whenever there is any matter that she thinks needs fixing. She has gone back to square one and is being extremely annoying with her martyr mentality and not telling people who have the right to know.

RUN Tae Ho, RUN! (But he won't as it's dramaland).

That she didn't tell him about finding Father immediately I could understand... she needed a bit of time. But that she didn't tell him about the operation, no. That was not OK.

It's a bit strange. I never thought of hate donating your liver. I kinda see where she is going with this. It's the same way that you rather see someone rot inside a prison for the rest of their life rather than see them meet a sudden end. She wants him to suffer. I sort of see what she is doing. They only found him after 25 years of looking and to see him die right after finding him would leave them all without closure. They will need time to process this, to move past it, and having someone to throw metaphorical rocks at will help. Someone to get on their knees and beg forgiveness, even if you are unwilling to grant it, will give them more closure than looking at his funeral picture for real this time.

I don't know if there is some sort of reconciliation arc here. But if anyone will forgive him it will be the Hyo Do. You could just see him drinking his father's praise like a man dying of thirst in the desert. He suffered the most from not having a father present. Hyo Shim suffered because she had to assume the role of husband and confidante to her mother. Hyo Joon suffered having to give up his dream to placate his mother, and Hyo Sung had to step in his father's shoes. I don't see the older siblings forgiving him, but Hyo Do yes.

I wonder what was Hyo Sung motivation for donating his liver?

However, I don't find it as disappointing as you that Hyo Shim has stepped forward. She isn't letting herself be exploited this time. She is doing this for herself and it's not out of filial piety.

It is shameless. Utterly shameless. They want closure? Proper closure cause they don't want to be angry at his funeral picture but at him instead. Well that's a whole lot of BS and manipulation. They want to see him suffer in health than be pissed at this dead body? And so to prevent that, Hyo-shim makes the choice to not be exploited or moved by filial piety. And to prove that she puts herself out to donate her liver. How is that not filial piety and exploitation? Because this time it'll provide closure? That's total BS once again.

Playing the biological family trump card and an anger dump is not something I'll understand. Ever.

Should the writer make the mistake of allowing the donation happen, I'll conclude that I've wasted more than 30 hours of my viewing time. The writer better goes Dr. Cha route about the whole liver donation.

Nope. I don't buy it. You can't "hate-donate" a liver!!! She's much more likely doing this for herself--because she knows that she won't be able to live with herself for "killing" someone else through lack of action. That's fine, frankly, but another (assumed) example of her not knowing her own feelings or being able to act on them in any real way.

As @al118 says...run, Tae-ho, RUN (to England with @al118 and the saunas!!)!!!

Why is it that in most serial kdramas that I've watched in KBS, there is always a major sickness/transplant need at the end. It gets so annoyingly predictable and old. Please, KBS _ be content with happy endings.

I never thought I could hate someone more than Evil Witch, but wow. I know that what they did wasn't on par with killing your BIL, but I'm unreasonably angry at them. Maybe because the last 40+ episodes dealt with, as Hyo Shim said, the many lasting scars it inflicted on the whole family. I would wish for him to be dropped into a burning volcano and for her to be tossed in after him. No forgiveness, no redemption for them. I get that this is Korea and divorces are looked at very negatively, but he could have simply divorced or separated. She would have moved on eventually. It was the sudden disappearance without a word that hurt the most. And the weeks/months/years of fruitlessly looking for him, not knowing what happened. Ugh.

First of all...can we get a what-what for the "Olympics-worthy" colorful discarded-plastic-bags-blown-by-the-wind ceremony?? I was on a plane when I saw this episode, and I only partially successfully stifled a shriek at the aesthetic joy--ridiculous, aesthetic joy--but joy all the same, of that scene.

Second, when I am in the hospital room where my (now) former, but also (now) dying, husband is there asking for grace (and a liver) after having left me and our four children for a colleague...I hope I have the same poise as our Mom to throw--of all things--toilet paper rolls at him. I mean, they were to hand, I get that, and eventually she picked up a water tumbler or two. But the first gesture of the toilet paper tossing was enough to inspire my future choices.

Third, I'll probably gif this soon, but man were there some Tae-ho glamour shots this week. Ha Joon shines (as he did in DWY) when performing taciturn, introverted sadness. But Tae-ho should definitely go live his own life now. Hyo-shim isn't ever going to love him the way he wants (and vice versa, mind you). England would be fine, sure, but if the surfing's best in Hawaii...then go East, young man!!!

PS: Smiles for Tae-min!!!! We have only an hour left. Right? No secret episode 51???

There are some BTS photos on ig that show Tae Min a BLUE shirt and patterned tie! I'm probably wrong, but it looks like scenes at an airport.

So, as the show winds down the writer has decided to hit us with The Great Digression AKA Hyo-shim’s father who needed a liver transplant. Other characters, including Tae-min, are just in limbo? I get the feeling that the writer has simply became bored with them. Like the story of Ggeut-Soon’s son- we see him kneeling to his mom with his family but then is surprised when she announces that he will inherit nothing from her. And then…. That’s it. I guess that story looked too boring to tell.

Hyo-shim decided to donate half of her liver to dad. She explained her reasoning, but I think it really just boiled down to being too nice to just let him die- even if he deserved it. So now what?

I have a real beef with this writer and how this show has been done. I admit that it has kept our interest and been more entertaining that the show before it but dramatically it has been a mess. ‘Dad’s Liver’ was an unneeded story arc which simply sucked up airtime and leaves far too little to resolve the really important threads which are still hanging- in particular the question of Tae-min’s need for at least a much better life. If Hyo-do and Tae-hui also get back together that is fine but Tae-min is and has been the true protagonist of this drama- it would be a crime not to resolve his situation the dramatic sense. Yet that is what I am sensing that our writer plans to do. Aristotle would not have approved. My question to writer-nim is simply this: Where is our Catharsis?

Oh my, this writer apparently thinks she still has 20 extra episodes, throwing new arcs and conflicts (and unfortunately leaving the old ones on a back-burner). Will she manage to wrap everything up next weekend??? I'm quite worried. (Though maybe rage is better than indifference as the final reaction?? 😆)

What Father did was terribly selfish (no money left to support his abandoned family??). And fate is cruel to Hyoshim to find him in his dying moment. I think I get her donation in the sense that she wouldn't be able to live with the guilt if she refused. And I totally get Taeho who wants the position in England and this time I also understand that he doesn't discuss it with Hyoshim, she really seems to be way too deep in family matters and needs bigger distance to finally start living for herself.

It was strange to see Dragon Mom so subdued... and I was not happy to see Taehee so guilty and tired, she needs some business to run!
We saw very little of Taemin, unfortunately, but he was still very smexy. 😊

The highlight was Garbage Grandma finally cleaning her house... with that colourful bag firework. 🙂

I have been thinking again about the liver transplant and maybe it actually is a good thing for Hyoshim and her family?? 🙃

1.They finally get a closure about Father.

2.The brothers will feel guilty enough to stop mooching from Hyoshim forever (and start pampering her instead?).

3.Mother stops with her memorials, gets her life together, and maybe even sues Father for financial and emotional damage (he should pay her and his kids for the rest of his life and then I hope it will be a looong life).

My comment wasn't well received but I think so too. I don't think they would have gotten much closure being angry at his funeral picture. Having a live father gives more opportunity for that. Whether it will be a reconciliation (hope not, he doesn't deserve that) or just gaining the ability to move on.

I don't think this is too late in the game or is a distraction. We spent 49 episodes observing all the ways the family was hurt and damaged by their father's abandonment. It had to be addressed, as it was a crucial plot point.

I hate the dumb delay trick writers play to extend a secret or confession. Episode 48 starts with HS not having the courage to confront Lost Dad in his hospital room was another tempted taffy pull of viewer heart strings. Adding that Lost Dad is nice to give her a PPL sample in a way to make him “a nice guy” was also a fail. Maybe that energy drink gave her the “liquid courage” to meekly confront dad. Their awkward conversation without emotion was another weak scene. HS, who bore the brunt of his absence, should have let him have it. The use of filial obedience has been laid thick in this series to the point of suffocation. Lost Dad has nothing to say to his abandoned wife. He says he is a coward which must mean in native Korean “scumbag.”

Park Mi Hee and Hyo Sung’s conversation was much better because Hyo Sung quickly got to the point: his father abandoned his family for an affair with the piano teacher. How could Lost Dad been “so lonely” when he had four children and a good career at university? I am glad that Hyo Sung immediately challenged her feeble excuse. The knife in his back was deep because he had a crush on his piano teacher! As expected, she was fishing for a liver transplant donor. But Lost Dad is cruel and shameless for abandoning his children even if he is not directly asking for a donor. Well played Hyo Sung when he said Lost Dad got to “live his own life” so isn’t that enough? Bravo.

TH and Grandmother are pretty clueless about Mother’s potential reaction of their deception about the roof top lady. I had predicted that Mother would be upset since this type of lie is the heart of her chaebol mistrust and how they will treat her daughter in the future. Trying to tell Mother that TH was raised differently from other rich kids . . . that he is frugal and did not live the life of luxury as a simple, lonely boy is sugar coating the reality that Grandma caused all of his alleged problems and he did not want for an education or money. Actually, I was disappointed that Mother was too diplomatic, understanding or trusting in Grandma’s words. (I guess the writer’s personality transplant is now complete.)

Finally, Bang’s ungrateful family shows up at her house. At least Bang gets to vent a little. Gosh, when Bang says she will give no more money to her family - - - instead to the residents that cared for her ---- her son’s family gasps in protest, putting forth of new high score for LYOL leech award. But never fail, writer completely misstates Korean inheritance laws. But the gall of Mother asking Bang for an inheritance was an immediate bipolar personality swing. The debate of who was a worse parent - - - really, why now?

HS returns home to find TH waiting for her. HS is still in her zombie state. TH is only concerned about pressing the wedding day forward. HS’ programmed apology shows no character growth because there is nothing for her to apologize for . . . except delaying the reveal about her father. The lack of...

... The lack of skinship or even a simple hug at that moment is the reason why this lead couple has no chemistry.

Why Tae Hee is now written a depressed shell of her former self is distasteful “My parents sins fall on me too.” More filial BS. Especially unworthy for a rebellious, independent, competent woman.

Evil Mom in a Michelin star jail cell keeping to her obnoxious behavior was another unrealistic viewer face slap. In every article I read about chaebol corruption trials, none have ever been jailed pending trial; none have every been convicted and sentenced in a month. If this was the writer’s way of giving Evil Mom her due, it was another major fail. And what of the Chairman?

Hyo Sung’s promotion from TM was deserved but had the whiff of nouveau nepotism. But this is the happy ending for his wife and family. One down, four more to go. Oops, spoke too soon as Hyo Do suddenly announces he is doing so well he is opening a second restaurant.

HS returning to the hospital is the “drama” no one wants to see. Lost Dad does not want anything to do with his family so let him rot in his own life crisis. She demands he go and apologize to everyone for 25 years of pain and anxiety. Why? It will not change a thing. At least HS got a little angry. Then Lost Dad’s lover comes in the room - - - putting the abandonment reason in clear focus but returns HS to her zombie walk state. Hyo Sung comes across her in the hospital and HS begins a catharsis realization.

Her talk with Hyo Sung about Dad’s liver transplant puts their societal obligation to their parent in full conflict mode. Yes, he will die without a transplant but he has been dead to the family for most of their lives. Bringing their parents back together makes no sense. And helping him now would only reward his betrayal.

TH is upset with HS because she missed another wedding planning event. TH gets worried that she is having second thoughts or illogically, that she has a BF on the side. TH’s impatience rears its ugly head again only fueled by HS’s silence. He repeats if she wants to marry him or if she is really in love with him. Then HS gut punches him by telling him they have to put off the wedding. This couple is not in love but came together for family trauma bonding.

Man, Park Mi Hee is a better sleuth than Mirim . . as she comes to ruin the celebration party. The scene was cut very short - - - fast forward to Mother going to see her husband in hospital. The editing of the show has lately become a real problem as conversational scenes are split or dropped all together.

Episode 49 opens with a continuation of the TH-HS talk about their wedding delay. (I presume it is because HS is thinking about being the donor.) TH continues to push the marriage date when HS says she needs to postpone the wedding. TH stresses how it is important to “us” but his demand is about “him.” He is pushing back on what HS needs with his own need. He refuses to postpone the wedding and against her wishes will meet with her ill father (presumably to get his consent for immediate wedding.) TH is not processing her stress and confusion about her father. He stubbornly pushes back to her if their marriage isn’t important enough to be #1 in her life. (If this is not a Bat Signal to flee right now I don’t know what is . . .) TH then guilt trips her by saying it was never her intention to break away from her family (which was not really HS’ intent but his plan to isolate her and have her focus solely on him.) He leaves without consoling (a hug, a kind, word, an acknowledgement) an emotional HS. Man, that is narcissistic. (If I recall correctly, most engagements fall apart during the the stress in the marriage preparation stage. But this is worse.)

(More bad episode editing here) HS is quickly buffered by Hyo Sung’s call that Ms. Park’s appearance before Mother may have sent her on the way to see Dad. We rejoin Mother at the hospital hallway and she is teetering . . . at the sight of him she begins to cry. But she quickly recovers her spite. A weak apology is met with a yell that he should have died instead of showing up now. (Sun-Soon may get her wish.) As SS berates him for his adulterous conduct, Ms. Park sneaks into the room (while HS Olympic sprints to the hospital.) SS is right - - - Lost Dad showing up just puts the family in more chaos, contempt and anger. Of course, she deals with her emotions by throwing things at him. Then she verbally attacks Park for trying to get a liver from her family instead of herself. But physical violence reappears in a blink of an eye. (I really don’t call this type of behavior “dramatic” by any means). HS rushes in stop the fight before it turns into a “before” picture for a hair restoration advertisement . . . Hyo Sung comes to help. Of course she moans it is not fair to SS and her children. Just leave him to rot in hell is the number one solution for this side channel cesspool arc.

Mirim badly attempts to lie to Hyo Jun about the celebration party mess since his exam is the next day . . . Mother is carried home but before they part she scolds her responsible children, HS and Hyo Sung, not to donate their liver to Lost Dad.

Hyo Do tries to talk sense into Hyo Sung that giving birth does not make you a parent, raising your children does . . . which is a valid reason not to be a donor to a man who disowned you. (But in stereotypical filial k-drama rules it does not.) But in the illogical character swings, Hyo Do later goes back on his position.

It is nosy Rubi that gives the viewers the K-drama...

... Liver Transplants for Dummies lecture. Rubi nominates Hyo Do but Filip uses his common sense to tell her it is more complicated than that.

Mother returns to her bedroom moping while her children ponder what to do. Bang thinks her betrayal situation is similar to Sun-Soon’s husband’s abandonment so they should basically “cut ties” and start a new life. She starts by getting rid of her precious hoarder’s trash collection. But this took up too much screen time. In fact, Bang’s story somehow became more important than TM.

TH calls to relent and to be patient while HS deals with her family issues. HS rebuffs TH wanting to see her that day - - - foreshadowing many things including going to the hospital, visiting her mother or just plain second thoughts about her life in general. If anything, this is a huge wake up call for her - - - how her family issues seemed immaterial to TH while she sees his family issues as potentially daunting. Our main couple’s call ends and they are adrift like strangers on a life boat.

My thesis about TH’s narcissism was confirmed when he said he would wait for HS to sort out her family situation, but immediately goes to TM to request a transfer to England after his wedding, thereby isolating HS from her family, her career and what she wants to do. By doing so without even consulting HS is a burning red flag that he wants HS to solely “live her own life” for him. He trial balloons the BS that England has best universities for sports marketing degrees (it is not and how would HS even qualify to enter a British school). Besides, lost in his thinking is that he is still under a criminal investigation (or did that also forgotten by the writer and director?)

Now are we going to get a parade of resentful children parading into Lost Dad’s room? Hyo Do why dampen your bitterness? HS is talking to the doctor about the process of donation why Hyo Sung wanders the hospital. He meets HS who also started the testing process. Both made the decision against their families wishes. Hyo Sung lectures her on the donation and keeping it secret from TH. Hyo Sung has made the decision that they will donate without discussing it with his brothers. Oh boy, the narrow mindedness must be genetic. HS says she is doing it not because she cares about her dad (she hates and resents him) but he wants dad to live to apologize to Mother for the rest of his life. This falsely presupposes that Dad would even do it . . . he has shown no remorse or no interest in his wife or children. At least Hyo Sung calls out her position as being false, but he has no reason to help him either. HS makes assumptions about Mom who waited for him for 25 years would not want to see him die, but it seems it the opposite is true. Mom is already hurting by his betrayal and his death would be closure to her pain. It is not phrased like HS thinks this will get her parents back together - - - that is delusional - - - but there is little room for Mother to feel anything...

...or Dad anymore since he intentionally left her for another woman. The last bit makes little sense too - - - HS worrying if they have to have a funeral for him. (Let Park do it is the answer to the question). HS giving her liver is to clear her conscious while not forgiving him or having a relationship with her Lost Dad is another martyr moment.

Another sudden TELL is that Hyo Do already tested and was not a match! (Again, time wasted on Bang’s arc.) Hyo Do does a 180 and is respectful when he meets his father. Why? What changed? The concept that blood is more important than behavior is a terrible societal lesson.

Now the bar exam is a week away? Why is the timeline such a mess this late in the game?
HS returns to Dad’s room even though she said she does not want to see him again when this is done, she tells Dad she will donate if Dad apologizes to everyone and beg on his knees for Mother’s forgiveness (which will be withheld.) When Lost Dad says “don’t bother” giving him a transplant, that should have been enough to cut ties without guilt. It is really not a question of who has the moral high ground. Ah, the loophole, Dad cried but did not say he would apologize.

Again, TH shows up at HS’ place when she said no, not today. TH leaves like his a bellhop at the Shilla Hotel, then turns to ask her to go away with him for the weekend. HS says no. (At this point, should not TH read into her blocks that the engagement is crumbling?) She says she has to go to Dad’s hometown (infers to arrange his funeral). She cannot look him in the eye - - another clear signal that their relationship is over: no communication, no trust, no caring, no understanding, no ability to come to a consensus. TH’s facial expression is recognition that a silent breakup in progress. Again, he leaves with no caring hug, word of encouragement or words of affection. Maybe that is what HS needed at the moment as she lifts her head in tears as TH walks away. He is not giving her the comfort, protection and affection she needs at this stressful time. If not now, when?

Well, the timeline is back on track as the next day is the EXAM. (I can only assume that the scenes for different scripts were filmed non-consecutively and editing is the problem). Mirim nags him on the way to the exam. Geesh, is she turning into Sun-Soon by osmosis? Only a pat on the arm, no kiss, no hug - - - another couple with no romantic skills.

Evil Mom in prison is unbelievable but trying to contrast with Grandma now living in crystal water pitcher luxury is a bit much. Is eating poor man’s sausages that big of a letdown when she was once a mere bookkeeper? If this is a sympathy play, no takers here. Another timeline problem: the inmate says Evil Mom was already “convicted” of her crimes - - - but that is nearly impossible since it has been less than a month after the investigation began. (Another huge tell instead of show).

Grandma takes Tae Hee to the villa. Bang’s apartment is totally...

Hyo Sung gets his test news. He can’t be a donor because of his liver condition. As predicted last week, HS is in a hospital bed. She still has not told TH of her decision so clearly she is not ready to settle down with him. This shows the parallel to TM’s martyr complex and HS’ skewed sense of duty that she will not admit to. Her desire to keep it secret from everyone until after the surgery is a noble idiocy tangent knowing she could be talked out of it if enough people gang up on her. Poor Hyo Sung is more repentant and apologetic to HS for failing to be a strong brother to her than good old Lost Dad. It speaks volumes that she asks for a hug from her brother instead of TH.

After HS is wheeled into surgery, a frantic TH arrives at the hospital. She is not in her room (which is different from the room the day before). Again, bad time line editing. The lost puppy wanders the floor unable to find her. How could he not feel betrayed by HS not telling him of her surgery? Or wanting him to be by her side?

The set up for the finale is so open ended anything goes now. There are so many Swiss cheese holes in the these last scripts you cannot tell if the show runners are going to tie things up or they gave up trying weeks ago.

… unless this is some weird introduction of Park to Tae Hee. I sure hope not.

I had that feeling, how arbitrary to bring Tae-hee to meet Landlord Granny . Halmoni gifting empty bottles ???

Final episode, eveything is going to happen at the hospital. Carrot’s birth,
Dad’s New Liver and Hyo-shim passes away. Carrot is a girl so they name her Hyo-shim. The End.

I think that they gave up trying to fully tie things up some time ago.

At this point, a gaggle of monkeys on typewriters would write a better script. And, the acting of the ‘father’ character was horrendous. I cannot believe I have watched this drivel so that’s on me.

@quirkycase, thanks for the highlights.
This show staggers towards the finale. The show is a mess, I expect the same for the finale.
Bring on the next weekender !

The finale is upon us. What will happen? I have no idea which is a really bad thing. In the past month, I have taken detailed notes to try to get the story lines straight. But it is still a mess. Based on the updated “facts” given by the writer, any glint of realism would have the series conclude as follows:

For our FL, HS actually running away from everyone like her Father did would be the only way for her to “live her own life.” No marriage. No living with her Mother. Her running away a great distance from her family and TH’s pressure is the only way she can find some peace of mind. (I get that vibe from her empty hospital room when TH showed up in a panic.) If not, she will be a doormat for the rest of her life.

Anyway, TH should be going to JAIL. He confessed to intentionally directing corporate money to his account (embezzlement) and then directing embezzled funds to his Evil Aunt. A severe breach of corporate duty would have him removed from Taesan.

TM would also be removed from Taesan. I presume that TM’s criminal sentence included a probationary period after he was released from prison. All the corporate crimes under his watch would have regulators enjoin him running a public company. TM could wind up re-opening is “dad’s” shoe repair shop and turning it into an artisan’s leather store.

Taesan would be broken a part and sold off in pieces to appease remaining shareholders and regulators. The Kang legacy would be no longer which would be a fitting end. Sweet old Grandma will be sitting alone in her big house (because she is too old to go to jail). Ironically, it would be her prison for her past obstruction/accomplice criminal behaviors.

If he hangs on to his promotion in the management purge, Hyo Sung would now enough money for his family and his Mother so he can just learn to relax and enjoy his family.

Given the fact that Mirim at five weeks was showing a 5 month baby bump means Hyo Jun is NOT the father of her baby. Final finale birth secret! Of course he fails the bar exam for the 10th time and then couple bitterly divorces.

Hyo Do becoming the franchise fried chicken king seems like the ultimate character transplant, but so it comes to pass without Tae Hee. Tae Hee needs to re-find herself as her parents face their criminal trials and punishment - - - perhaps running an egg tart shoppe in Paris.

Of course, none of this will happen. This show’s deep rooted commitment to pre-modern filial duty, toxic relationships and manipulative guilt tripping vulnerable individuals will keep the characters emboldened by their bad choices, character flaws and situations. A writer and director’s job is to give us a reasonable journey through story telling instead of making us feel like pinballs being smashed into shiny objects inside an arcade game.

I wonder if weekenders are trending towards unintentional parody of classic k-drama shows.

Your description of this show as a pinball machine seems apt.

I doubt that any of your proposed resolutions will happen but we will see.
