News bites: March 2, 2024

Jo Woo-jin, Ji Chang-wook, Ha Yoon-kyung

  • After a brief glimpse in Disney+’s 2024 lineup teaser in February, an official announcement is now out for Gangnam B-Side, with demoted and dogged cop Jo Woo-jin (Narco-Saints), shady broker Ji Chang-wook (Welcome to Samdal-ri), and ambitious prosecutor Ha Yoon-kyung (See You in My 19th Life) leading the cast. Production for the crimes series has filmmaker Park Noo-ri (Money) at the helm, with scripts by Joo Won-kyu (Argon). [News1]

  • Jung Ji-so (The Glory) has been tapped for MBC’s new sageuk The Scent of Plum Blossoms, potentially becoming Jo Yeo-jung’s (Behind Every Star) daughter for a second time after Parasite. With both actors currently in talks, the novel adaptation is still in the planning stages. [Newsen]
  • Speaking of historicals, tvN’s Jung-nyun has been penciled into the 2024 schedule to broadcast this October. Starring Kim Tae-ri (Revenant), Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), and Ra Mi-ran (Cold-blooded Intern) among other talents as our story’s women’s performing troupe, the 1950s period drama is currently in filming. [Sports Seoul]

  • tvN has also been busy with continuing promos for Lovely Runner, releasing more stills of our famed hero Byun Woo-seok (Strong Girl Nam-soon) who Kim Hye-yoon (Snowdrop) is determined to save. The romance will be taking us on a timeslip adventure this April, with co-directing by PD Kim Tae-yub (When My Love Blooms) and PD Yoon Jong-ho, and scripts by Lee Shi-eun (True Beauty, Top Star Yoo Baek). [Newsen]
  • A makjang-packed new teaser has dropped for SBS’s upcoming 7 Reborn – War for Survival, re-assembling our players for the second season showdown. Including Eom Ki-joon (Little Women), Hwang Jung-eum (Men Are Men), and Lee Joon (Red Heart) as well as others, the ensemble cast will be returning to our screens on March 29 in the weekend slot. [Osen]
  • In another explosion of color and fantastically campy goodness, a new poster and teaser have been pulled from the oven for Netflix’s comedy-fantasy Chicken Nugget. Come March 15, the mission is on for Ryu Seung-ryong (Moving) and Ahn Jae-hong (LTNS) to rescue the former’s daughter Kim Yoo-jung (My Demon) before she lands on someone’s fork. [MBC]

Yay - there are a few in this list that sound good to me! But I'm most excited for Chicken Nugget. If it's as funny as the teasers, I'll be well pleased!! It seems like maybe dramaland gives us one gleefully weird and zany comedy a year? (e.g., Gaus Electronics; Pegasus Market) Hopefully this one will be that!!

I am hoping for that as well- it is past time that we had another good comedy.

1. Will I try this? Sigh, because I am a sucker for JCW, and I find HYK a really delightful actress. Hoping it is better than the other gangster drama we don't talk about.

2. I like JYJ, so maybe.

3.Kim Tae Ri, that is enough for me.

4. poor KHY, they keep putting the poor girl with men twice her size, ha.

6. Chicken Nugget looks like a riot and a half. so yes.

1. I really enjoy Ha Yoon-kyung and she deserves so much better than the disaster that was See You in My 19th Life, so I hope for her sake that this is good.

2. Jung Ji-so is so talented. Will be tuning in even though I'm not superr into sageuks.

3. THIS SHOW. YES. YES. I am SO psyched for this one. Kim Tae-ri! Ra Mi-ran! In a female-led music drama set in the post-war era! This better be GOOD.

4. Okay, I honestly find their height difference uncomfortable to watch already, but both actors can be charming in their own right even if they're not the best actors of their generation. But the writer of True Beauty? Yikes. We'll see...

5. Did this really need a second season?

6. Please give me this insanity. Now.

Doesn’t anyone else feel a little repulsed by that thing they call a chicken nugget with Kim Yoojung’s face? No? Then, it’s only me.

For me, this story is in the horror category, and I don't watch such things. The idea that someone is turned into something? No. The only thing I watched that could be called horror was the American series Teen Wolf and vampire series in general.

The idea that horror and comedy never mix is disproven by the wonderful musical LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS- which is a funny and musically delightful re-telling of a B-movie horror film.

Jungnyun feels like a long time coming but I am really looking forward to it.
I hope Chicken nugget is an all season drop. Secret zoo was an equally ridiculous concept but worked well as a film so I am hoping they can make Chicken nugget work as a short drama. Ahn Jaehong played these kinds of roles well in Secret Zoo, and Be Melodramatic.

1 has to be everything better than The Worse of Evil. Also a plus on Ha Yoon-kyung's casting.

YAY! CHICKEN NUGGET is on the way!

I'm vegetarian but I'll watch this because it's Ryu Seong-Ryung and Kim Yoo-Jung after all. *cheeky tongue out*

1. A historical drama starring Kim Tae-ri, Ra Mi-ran, and Shin Ye-eun? Yes, please. Also, I'm loving this current leaning towards historical dramas that aren't sageuks. Uncle Sam-shik, that Lee Je-hoon one, and now Jung-nyun. I love it!

2. Gangnam B-Side. I like the cast. I haven't properly watched a Ji Chang-wook drama (a few episodes of Lovestruck in the City, an episode of The Sound of Magic, two episodes of Suspicious Partner... that's all I can recall at the moment), but I've seen enough of him here and there to know I like him as an actor.

I'm aware he doesn't have the best luck with scripts so fingers crossed he's picked a winner this time.

3. Has anyone seen the first season of the Eom Ki-joon X Hwang Jung-eum one? Is it any good? Should I give it a watch or look for something else?

4. Chicken Nugget gives me serious Gudetama vibes and I'm here for it 😂

2.
In my opinion, he chooses good dramas, but they are not things that could be generally liked. His last dramas, except for the one about Jeju Island, were sad dramas about characters in difficult life situations and making controversial decisions. I liked these dramas, but I wouldn't watch them again because they weren't very optimistic. These were not dramas to improve our mood. Some had chaotic love stories, where the chaos resulted not from bad scripts, but from the nature of the characters.

You're talking about Ji Chang-wook I guess. Got confused by 2 as his drama is discussed at 1. 😊 I understand your point of view. His dramas definitely haven't been populist choices.
