News bites: February 22, 2024

Han Ye-ri

  • Han Ye-ri (One Day Off) has reportedly been added to the cast of MBC’s upcoming The Intimate Traitor, playing a police officer alongside our profiler hero Han Seok-kyu (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3). Aiming to broadcast later this year, the crime-thriller has PD Song Yeon-hwa (Wild Boar Hunting, The Red Sleeve Cuff) directing with writing by Han Ah-young. [Star News]

  • Lee Jin-wook (Sweet Home 2) is considering a return to romance in a new series called To My Hae-ri (roughly translated), potentially joining Shin Hye-sun (Welcome to Samdal-ri). Production is in the early stages with writer Han Ga-ram (I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day) penning the scripts. [Xports News]
  • Casting continues for tvN’s Meeting Love on a Log Bridge (working title) as well, with an offer now out for Jung Yumi (The School Nurse Files) to become reunited lovers with Joo Ji-hoon (Jirisan). Currently in the planning stages with Joo still in talks as well, the romance will be helmed by PD Park Joon-hwa (Alchemy of Souls) with scripts by Im Ye-jin (The Tale of Nokdu). [Newsen]

Jung Yumi

  • Kim Ro-woon (The Matchmakers) might need to hold onto his Joseon garbs, now that he and Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse) are being courted for Disney+’s fictional sageuk Murky Water (roughly translated). Production for the historical is in the experienced hands of filmmaker Chu Chang-min (Seven Years of Night, Masquerade) and writer Chun Sung-il (All of Us Are Dead, Chuno). [Newsen]
  • Song Sae-byuk (Possessed) may be making a rare appearance in dramaland, becoming a house husband to Go Hyun-jung (Mask Girl) in Namib (romanized title). The character was once a music producer and will be going back to his roots to help make Ryeoun (Twinkling Watermelon) a star. [Star News]
  • Over on tvN’s Queen of Tears, love blossoms again for Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day) and Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes) in pretty new posters. We also (finally) get a good look at the dotingly married Kwak Dong-yeon (Gaus Electronics) and Lee Joo-bin (Love to Hate You) in the newest stills. The drama premieres in just two more weeks on March 9. Shin Hyesun in a romance by the IFYOABD writer sounds promising! Fingers crossed I’ll like it more than her last drama.

Almost don’t need to mention that Joo Jihoon in a romance sounds even more promising!! 👏🫰👏

Rowoon in another sageuk, and on Disney+? Murky waters for sure. 👀
(How could it be better than THE MATCHMAKERS?)

Shall we send over a coffee truck to make Joo Ji-hoon accept the offer.

Murky Waters is 180 degree turn from The Matchmakers. 😊 Get ready to Roswoon again!!

1) Yeah, Han Ye-ri is back!

2 and 3) I'm happy with the news of romance Kdramas (and not the heavy ones of Disney+)

4) Rowoon is attached to this drama since the beginning but FNC never confirmed it. Usually, they wait for the end of his last drama to confirm but they didn't do it. It will be a very different role of his last one. He won't learn to fight in books :p Park Seoham (Semantic Error) was casted.

6) I don't want pictures anymore, give me the drama!

Kwak Dongyeon in love, all sweet 😍... if they add a baby I may even forget the rest of the cast. 😄
(Memories of Kwak Dongyeon's scenes in Never Twice resurfacing.)

No. 1. MBC’s THE INTIMATE TRAITOR. I will be there unless MBC ships Han Ye-ri over to Disney+ to join Lee Je-hoon.

(Yes, I am still annoyed that LJH’s MBC drama CHIEF DETECTIVE 1958 is going to Disney+ and not Kocowa/Viki).

O/T Sidebar query. What would prohibit MBC (for example) from licensing a drama (CHIEF DETECTIVE 1958 for example) to both Disney+ and Kocowa/Viki?
Territorial coverage is different I believe. What’s the problem?

The in talks Romance dramas and Namib sound like ones to look out for.

Queen of tears seems to be taking a looooong time to drop. I am hoping my high expectations are met as the stills and trailers all look good.

-I'm so happy to see Han Ye-ri back working with Han Seok-kyu!
-Jung Yumi is another actress I'm always happy to see in dramaland.
-I hope there's a lot of Kwak Dong-yeon and Kim Gab Soo in QUEEN OF TEARS.
-filmmaker of "Masquerade" and writer of "Chuno"? You'd think they'd cast some veterans after their success with Lee Byung-hun and Jang Hyuk.

Ikr, this is a very unexpected combo of writer/PD and lead actors, no offense to Rowoon and SYE... Are they trying to revive youth sageuk genre this way or something?

Personally, I think it's nice to see more experimented PD and writers to work with younger actors instead to see always the same combo. I'm very excited to watch Queen of Tears, but it will be the third drama with duo writer-actor.

Younger actors are given the chance to learn from the best like this.

Makes sense. Not a fan of the writer though (to put it mildly - I loved CHUNO, but plot was driving me bonkers), but if a high quality crew can bring out the best from young cast, it's worth trying. I even joked before about wanting to see Rowoon in a serious angsty sageuk... well, ask and you'll get it lol.

Dramaland has been raining sageuks with younger and inexperienced actors. It is a treat to see more veteran actors leading a sageuk these days. Thanks to Jo Jung-suk and Honey Lee, this year got off to a good start with this genre.

If both of them were leads in the same sageuk, I'd give it a try for sure.

4

I don't know about serious youth sageuks. Did we ever have one before? Yeo Jin-goo played a serious lead role in 'Crowned Clown' from beginning to end, but it wasn't a youth sageuk.

Maybe a youth sageuk like "Sungkyunkwan Scandal." That worked well for Yoo Ah-in and Song Joong-ki' like "The Moon Embracing The Sun" for Kim Soo-hyun.

Rowoon didn't spend much time in supporting roles like these 3 above. I've only seen him as a lead actor.

Last year OBY attempted to mix the two genres - to a little success, sadly. I can see why it may be a tough call...

Never got to see SS (everything about it is a huge nope for me) and METS almost gave me an aneurysm once the main cast aged up, so cannot comment on that.

Rowoon was "male lead but more like a sidekick" in TOMORROW, I think. Otherwise yes, he's one of the guys who got to lead roles rather easily... at least he seems to take the burden seriously.

"..yes, he's one of the guys who got to lead roles rather easily... at least he seems to take the burden seriously."
That's always good to hear.

@kiara opinions on his acting here on DB seem to differ quite a bit, but I think it's obvious that he's: a) actually talented; b) improving from project to project. Which is something I wish I could say about some famous "professional" actors, let alone idol-rooted ones... Which is where all my talk about him in melo sageuk comes from - I've already seen (and mostly liked) him in romcoms, now it's time to stretch his range further.

4

@gikata,
I've seen 2 or 3 of his dramas. He does nothing for me, but that goes for all the newbies in sageuks. This genre needs gravitas, which comes with both experience and talent. Maybe I'm too picky.

5

@kiara well, I didn't watch widely loved here MATCHMAKERS and wasn't really enamored with anyone or anything (even FL, for all her acting skills, was rather unconvincing as a guy, and her cross-dressing made zero sense plot-wise) in KING'S AFFECTION, so idk. I feel like he wasn't given a meaty enough sageuk role yet for me to judge whether he has the needed it somewhere in him or just looks nice in hanbok)))

4

Song Joong-ki was offered the male lead in METS but declined in favor of a minor role in TREE WITH DEEP ROOT. It turns out well for him since he is equally noteworthy in serious roles.
METS was pretty crappy in the 2nd half, but it helped catapult Kim Soo-hyun's career.

4

@gikata,
I watched 2 episodes of "MATCHMAKER" and liked it a lot. I will go back and finish it one of these days.

3

@kiara to be fair, KSH was not the MAIN reason why I went from loving to loathing that drama drastically, so SJK instead of him wouldn't save the day either. YJG still>>>, sorrynotsorry.

3

@gikata,
I agree; none would have saved it, but it came out at the right time when viewers were starving for any sageuk. It was one of the most undeserving national status dramas, IMO.

3

@kiara I agree..in fact I don't think we have such a thing called serious youth saeguks. Most youth saeguks I know are light and are from the fusion type. As for gravitas in serious-to-epic saeguks, I agree that why most casting directors opt for senior actors or established actors like Nam Goong Min (My Dearest), Joo Sang Wook (King of Tears) and Jang Hyuk (Tree With Deep Roots, My Country: New Age), Lee Joon Gi (Iljimae, Gunman in Joseon) and Jo Jung Suk (Nokdu Flower and Captivating the King).

3 - was there another actress rumored for the part before? Genuine question because I totally forgot... JYM is fine - she wouldn't be my first choice if I had to imagine someone to pair up with JJH in romance, but I have no objections to her either.
4 - as long as it's NOT about matchmaking (sorry, everything marriage related gives me creeps, and things were like that even before I've been permanently damaged by Xianxia Wedding Trauma) I'm ready to listen. The writer of CHUNO though... for real? Perhaps I should do a self-care and reconsider before it's too late...
6 - ah, another KDY drama I have ZERO reasons to try except of him, great *sarcasm*

3. Hey now, what doubts do you have about my girl Jung Yumi? Is she not sexy enough for your JJH? Lol
4. Dramaland and same yearly theme. I don't get it.

3. Nothing, really - I just never saw her in romance genre myself... or maybe I did but 100% forgot (heard she's good tho), so she's simply not someone I'm familiar with enough to include her in my dream casting fantasies. The fact that there's 2 similarly aged actresses with this name doesn't help either.
4. Do you know something about drama's synopsis that aren't mentioned in the article? I'm all ears.
