News bites: March 27, 2024

Go Kyung-pyo, Kang Hanna, Joo Jong-hyuk

  • We finally have a Wednesday-Thursday drama on the horizon for JTBC, with the rom-com No Secrets coming to our screens this May. Starring an announcer Go Kyung-pyo (D.P. 2) who is suddenly unable to lie, overly optimistic show writer Kang Hanna (Red Heart), and failed idol turned trot singer Joo Jong-hyuk (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), production has PD Jang Ji-yeon directing with scripts by Choi Kyung-sun. [JTBC]

  • Also preparing for their budding spring schedule, tvN has lined up The Midnight Romance in Hagwon (previously Graduation), where umbrellas blossom a dreamy love for Jung Ryeo-won (May It Please the Court) and Wie Ha-joon (The Worst of Evil). It’s a signature scene for our PD Ahn Pan-seok (One Spring Night) – not that I’m arguing because pretty – who is working together with writer Park Kyung-hwa. The romance is slated to premiere on May 11, following Queen of Tears in the weekend slot. [MBC]

  • Speaking of Queen of Tears, Kim Soo-hyun is reviewing offers for his next project and is considering a new black-comedy called Knock Off. With production still in the planning stages, PD Park Hyun-seok (Forest of Secrets 2) is attached to direct. The team is currently busy in discussions to decide on a broadcaster and/or platform. [News1]
  • With Beauty and Mr. Romantic now out of the gates, preparations are underway for KBS’s next weekender Iron Family – as in clothing iron – with Kim Jung-hyun (Kokdu: Season of Deity) reportedly cast as the lead. I’m intrigued. Expected to broadcast later this year in September, the family drama has PD Sung Joon-hae (Bravo My Life) at the helm and – say what now – Seo Sook-hyang (Greasy Melo, Jealousy Incarnate) penning the scripts. [MBC]

Jeon Ji-hyun, Kang Dong-won

  • In other reports, the new spy-romance Polaris is said to have begun filming this week, with Jeon Ji-hyun (Jirisan) and Kang Dong-won (Dr. Cheon and the Lost Talisman, Magic) headlining the series. With a runtime of eight episodes, the series has the busy PD Kim Hee-won (Queen of Tears) and screenwriter Jung Seo-kyung (Decision to Leave) reuniting after Little Women. [Osen]
  • ENA released the first script reading stills along with new posters for the upcoming action-comedy Crash. Premiering on May 13 in the Monday-Tuesday slot, our age-old enemy Truck of Doom will soon be quivering in their lane as Lee Min-ki (Behind Your Touch), Kwak Sun-young (Moving), and Heo Sung-tae (Bait) lead the police force against dramaland’s traffic crimes. Two romances coming soon yay. Action comedy cautiously long listed as it could be the wrong kind of funny for me.

Kang Dong Won back in a dramaland is something that got my attention.

The other is Kim Soo Hyun potentially choosing a black comedy for his next project.

Both are something to look forward to.

so excited for Kang Dong Won back in dramaland and yes to Kim Soo Hyun's also. Yes to No Secrets and looking forward to Crash. Gotta clear out my watching schedule (hurry up and finish some to add some) for April and May.

Cannot wait for MIDNIGHT ROMANCE. There will be popcorn & tissues, and potentially awards for Worst Drama Parent to be handed out. 🫣

NO SECRETS could be good - or too silly. Inexplicably reminds me of PINOCCHIO. 🤔😂 But Joo Jonghyuk could be worth watching… (will he be the 2ML? Dang!)

We have had some truly awful drama parents this year- Worst Drama Parent could be a hotly contested title.

1) When you're happy just because you will get a drama on Wednesday-Thursday! I wonder what happened to this drama, was it one of the many dramas filmed but not aired because they didn't find a channel?

2) I'm happy that WHJ is a lead in a romance! I trust PD Ahn Pan-seok!

3) I'm happy that I won't have to wait for his comeback for a long time.

4) Kang Dong-won in a drama \o/

5) I didn't understand the plot of this drama yet....

1. Finally, a WedThurs drama. Go Kyung-pyo and Kang Hanna are not to be missed. And then there's Joo Jung-hyuk.

2. May 11th 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭

4. I'm going to watch this particular weekender. Jealousy Incarnate writernim, I hope you've not lost your spunk🥺🥺

Crash is MonTues. I'm glad there are spreading it out instead of fighting over an already clogged weekend schedule.

May is gonna be lit🔥🔥

How perfect a casting is this!!

Kim Jung-hyun in a weekender, though? Hmmm. I guess we might have an answer to what sort of work the stars of Kkokdu were able to find after that trainwreck…

Better than nothing, I guess, but it pains me as well. Maybe it'll help him to bounce back into prime time dramas? Like with ISH I get it - she's not as bad as people make her to be, but she's rather limited indeed, while he is REALLY good, actually versatile and can do so much more! And yet... *bitter sigh*

This saddened me as well, because he's very talented and deserves more than he's getting at the moment, but at least he's working. And if it's actually good (with that production team, it's possible) it could be amazing for him.

The schedule for the remainder of this year is packed with potentially great new dramas, and it's really taking off in May!

1. I've been waiting for this one for a long time. I love this cast! Go Kyung Pyo's comedic skills were so woefully underused in Love in Contract. And it's been too long since Kang Hanna was on our screens. Side note that it looks like they've changed the title of this to "Frankly Speaking."

2. Cautiously excited given the cast, but I'm not sure I can handle another OSN/SITR style drama. Let us pray at least for a decent soundtrack 😉 I'm going to bet they change the title of this one as well. I was already making jokes about the similarity of Hagwon and Hogwarts... until I learned that hagwon means "academy" in Korean. Language is so funny like that 🙃

3. Kim Soo Hyun and black comedy sounds like a perfect combo.

4. Shock, curiosity, and skepticism battling for dominate reaction here.

5. This is another one I've tracked for a while. The earliest descriptions of this story are of pair of former spies trying to find themselves again after retiring from their careers.

6. I like a good action comedy, so I have hopes this will be a surprise hit.

2) Oh yes, fingers crossed for a good soundtrack. I’ll even take one that’s plain “tolerable”. Just no SITR OST “quality” please! 😭

They were. But the number of songs was limited and played on excessive repeat... and too loudly over the actors' voices. I remember turning the volume completely off at times just to avoid listening to it.

1. This looks fun. I like our leads and it sounds like a nice old school romance. I can't wait for the random trauma that affects him and her.

2. I was so EXCITED for this and then I read the description and realize why I cleared it from my mind. His teacher, WHY? WHY?

3. I will watch KSH in anything and most definitely a black comedy.

5. I have never seen KDW in anything because I don't really watch K movies and he doesn't really do dramas, so color me intrigued.

6. And crash just looks fun.

KSH willing to consider a script in the middle of a currently airing drama is new territory lol. He hasn’t done that in a very very long time. Looks like he’s back FT - thank heavens! Slightly skeptical on the writer, but the PD is pretty good and I trust KSH’s judgement on scripts 100% of the time.

KDW in a drama with JJH with the current QOT PD… surely it can’t get better than that?! This will be pretty epic, I don’t care what it’s about. I know Jirisan should have burned me. Technically JJH hasn’t done a drama I liked since YFAS lol. But I’m still pumped.

This may be part of the reason Kang Dong-won is back on TV. The film studio was banking on last year's movie "Dr. Cheon and the Lost Talisman" to be a blockbuster franchise type series. But it did not do well at the box office (I saw it in the theater during my Seoul trip. I thought it was good but not worthy of a series of sequels.)

Kim Jung-hyun weekender? I know people look at something like this as a step down, but I'm interested.

I think it increases exposure and gives a regular income for 6 months so it’s a move a lot of actors take across the age and experience range.

I agree. It can get his name out there if this does well. Shin Hye Sun got her big break on a weekender.

Yes, she did- and she was not the female lead either.

Even more than a hit project he needs good publicity, esp regarding his work ethics (sadly, all the praise he's got from CLOY and MQ sets was buried under the pile of controversies), so perhaps a gig as long-term as a weekender is really the best choice to prove that he's not a risky for whatever reasons casting option.

I absolutely agree. He need to build up his reputation again since we all know he has the acting chops. He just need to behave behind the scenes and avoid any potential scandals.

but alas, it's a love triangle, huh?

IRON FAMILY? Perhaps this is set in a laundry? No Chaebol family? This would be a good thing.

Kang Dong Won is doing a DRAMA?! I never thought I'd see the day. The script must be strong if it convinced him to return to the small screen after 20 years.

Seo Sook-hyang writer-nim is testing my love for her brand of quirky script with this comeback as a weekender writer. Hopefully the eps count is less than 30. It's tempting though, with that unusual premise and Kim Jung-hyun as one of the leads.
