News bites: March 16, 2024

Lee Se-hee, Kim So-yeon, Kim Sung-ryung

  • If anyone is keeping a tally, we can make another tick in the 1990s box for the next era we’ll be exploring in dramaland through JTBC’s new Sales of Virtue (roughly translated). With Kim Sung-ryung (Kill Heel) confirmed and offers currently out to Kim So-yeon (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) and Lee Se-hee (Bad Prosecutor), the story will have our trio of ladies leading the spicy door-to-door sales of adult wares. [Newsen (1), (2)]

  • Kim Se-jung (Uncanny Counter 2: Counter Punch) has reportedly been cast in a new rom-com called In the Name of Alcohol (roughly translated), reuniting with Business Proposal’s PD Park Sun-ho. With Kim up to play a liquor company sales associate, love will find a way to clash and connect her to a local beer brewer hero. The series is said to be in discussions to possibly air on ENA. [10 Asia]
  • But before we can get to the drinks, tvN has been feasting us on a buffet of cuteness in Lovely Runner’s promos and the newest posters have Kim Hye-yoon (Snowdrop) stuck sweet to Byun Woo-seok (Strong Girl Nam-soon). Come April 8, the timeslip romance will put our heroine on a journey to rescue her dearest from the pending bitterness in his future. [MBC]

  • Busy bee Han Hyo-joo (Moving) has crossed the sea for Netflix’s new Japanese drama Romantics Anonymous, acting alongside Oguri Shun (The 13 Lords of the Shogun). Based on Jean-Pierre Ameris’ French movie by the same title in English, the rom-com series commenced filming earlier this month. [News1]
  • Just ahead of their Monday premiere, KBS released an extended preview for Nothing Uncovered, further shrouding Kim Haneul (Kill Heel), Yeon Woo-jin (Daily Dose of Sunshine), and Jang Seung-jo (Death’s Game) in a smoky mix of lies and truths. The crime-mystery begins on March 18, with production led by PD Lee Ho, PD Lee Hyun-kyung, and writer Bae Soo-young. [Osen]
  • Speaking of mysteries, the first poster has finally dropped for the upcoming thriller Black Out, which stars Byun Yo-han (Mr. Sunshine), Go Bo-kyul (The Heavenly Idol), Go Joon (Cheat on Me If You Can), and Kim Bora (Like Flowers in Sand). Helmed by filmmaker Byun Young-joo (Helpless) with scripts by Seo Joo-yeon, the novel adaptation will be making its first showing at the Cannes International Series Festival in April. [News1]

1. There'll be so much playing with the title 🤭😂

2. I thought Samdalri and Dr. Slump was topping the alcohol. Now we have this 🤣.

5. Finally, a Monday drama slot. That's added incentive to watch if you ask me.

6. Perfect casting. That's all I can say.

The parallel umbrellas poster for Lovely Runner is so, so cute. They're going to be the cutest romance.

I wonder if Lovely Runner won't be saturated with advertisements for alcoholic products, since the plot of the drama will probably take place when the characters are minors or pretend to be minors (she?)? This is what I understand from the drama's promotional photos. But I immediately suspect that there will be scenes with adult characters getting drunk at every opportunity, in order to match the Korean national average in drunkenness shown in dramas. Some time ago I read various articles (there was a lot of these articles a few months ago) about how apparently there is no, but not a single episode of Korean drama in which there is no scene with alcohol. One article said that an alcohol scene would appear on average every 12 minutes in a drama episode. This is crazy.

I was just commenting about this on another post. I haven't started QoT yet, and one reason is the clips I've seen of KSH drunk. I'm reaching my tolerance limit with the excessive drinking and the fallout from being drunk. Doctor Slump in particular is the height of irresponsible messaging re: drinking (and I didn't think it could get worse with A-list actors after Welcome to Samdal-ri... but it did). If anything eventually pushes me a way from k-drama, this will be it.

1. A trip to the nineties, Kim Sung-ryeong and Kim So-yeon? I can dig it.

2. I like Kim Se-jung but this sounds like it'll be heavy on the portrayal of copious alcohol consumption and, just, 😬. As someone who is baffled by and sometimes annoyed by South Koreas drinking culture as portrayed in Kdramas (it's glamorized and not treated as a series issue) I don't know if this is for me. It's the one thing about Drink Now Work Later that ruined it for me (still enjoyed it though, overall)

3. Romantics Anonymous sounds good. Plus I love Han Hyo-joo, so.

Looks like intercultural romance (specifically Japanese and Korean) might be a new trend in dramas? We've got Eye Love You on Netflix (Chae Jong Hyeop + Fumi Nikaido), the upcoming Lee Se-young + Kentaro Sakaguchi drama, and now this one with Han Hyo-joo and Oguri Shun

4. Ooh, a thriller. Yes, please.

1. Oooh I wonder if it is similar to the states when tupperware sales were going on, this sounds interesting.

2. I ADORE Kim Se Jung, but alcohol, lol, I will still watch it.

3. Lovely Runner looks adorable, but I should temper myself because apparently, there will be a massive dose of sadness

4.Romantics anonymous is the second Japanese-Korean collab, fun

5. Nothing uncovered, here we go.

1. Hmmm...

2. Say what?! They're just doubling down now on the glorification of drinking. And I'm hardly a teetotaler.

3. This is the only upcoming k-drama with published release dates that I have any interest in right now. So I'll probably cut it a lot of slack, lol.

6. What's the scoop with this? Will it be on an OTT platform at some point?

I was waiting the news about Kim So yeon`s next project. It is set in the 90s and a female centric drama. I don`t think I watched a drama about door to door salespeople. The product choice is weird but I am intrigued. I am curious about the writer and the genre.

I can see her in this role. It would probably suit her better than previous villainess roles. She has a sweet and charming side that's been missing in her roles these past few years.

So yeon has a strong on screen presence and can play the tough women very well but she is total opposite. I miss seeing her gentle and vulnerable side in her new characters.
Her latest character in Tale of Nine Tailed 1938 is one of my favorites but I want her to play a human next time.
